My husband and I took nearly a year to decide which fence contractor to use. We have a rather large yard (68' x 69' x 76') and our fences were different heights on three sides. Only one neighbor was willing to cover the cost with us, so we had to think long and hard about it. We were spurred on by our dogs, which were fence fighting because they could see through the cracks and holes in our old fencing. I found SMJ Fencing Company by driving around my neighborhood looking for the best looking fences. One of the more attractive fences had his name on it. When I spoke to the home owner, he had nothing but good things to say about SMJ. Originally, I didn't think it would be possible for our new fence to be level on the slopped ground or to be the same height on all sides. But thankfully SMJ showed me my expectations were too low. While we obtained quotes from three other contractors (one of which specialized in fences too), none were as well organized and able to show photo examples to help us with key decisions. Santiago's quote was more detailed, legible and complete. Compared to other bare bones quotes his total price was higher, but I could easily attribute that to my asking for higher quality materials, adding lattice, a retaining wall, the fence staining, plus a very nice gate with a lock on the interior and exterior. It's obvious by looking at his team's work, they have a sense of aesthetics and pride that comes from working in a small business. Santiago guided us with excellent recommendations and suggestions, prior to work and also during the construction. He was the only fencing expert to notice that we needed a 12" retaining wall with one of our neighbors when giving me the original quote. During construction, his team created a special fence box around a neighbor's tree, but didn't charge us extra for it. His crew (Max, David, and Jory) were very hard working under conditions I would consider to be cold and miserable (with intermittent rain). They were efficient, straightened up each day and totally cleaned up when the job was done. Santiago checked in daily and was quick to have his team make any adjustments that I asked for. Given the high quality results, SMJ's pricing is extremely competitive. He stuck to his quoted price for the most part (we went over slightly to cover some extra materials that were needed to make the fences all the same height. Originally, I was willing to make the two side fences lower, but thankfully his team took initiative to make all sides match). I cannot be happier with the results. If you are going to the expense of replacing all of your fences, don't skimp. Go with experts from SMJ Fencing Company. Just a few months after installing the arbor and some fences and gates, the gate door fell apart from its post. The 2x4 holding the gate to the post split in half. I contacted Santiago (the owner) by email, phone, and text to come and fix it. He didn't respond to my multiple calls and texts. Only one (broken) sentence in response to my email as you see below. After spending ~$24k with him, I was expecting him to come and fix the problem. Disappointed to see he is ignoring my calls! I would rate his customer service as disappointing! He may easily ignore you after he gets paid, and therefore do not recommend him. Here is my email to Santiago: ___________________________________________________________ Hi Santiago, The fence door you made for us all of a sudden fell down and got separated from the post. We were sitting at home and all of a sudden a big bang, and one side of the big door fell down. The door itself is ok. Please see attached picture. Looks like the 2x4 which was holding the door was weak (had cracks?) and the door was heavy, the 2x4 split in half, and the door fell down. When would you come and fix it? I hired them to hang a 10 foot fence door which I had already gotten fabricated elsewhere. Considering their prices, I expected a professional service however that was not the case. It was a horrible experience and I would never hire them again. There are a number of things that went wrong: 1) They started work two days earlier than scheduled. They showed up when I was at work and started working without giving me a call or texting me that they were starting. Normally I would be happy to have the job done early, but the crew that showed up got everything wrong and I would have rather been there. 2) They installed the post in the wrong place. There was an existing post that needed to be removed and a new one had to be installed in its place. They were too lazy to jackhammer the old post out so they just cut it off which forced them to install the new post adjacent to it. This caused the fence door to awkwardly go across at an angle. 3) They messed up my neighbors front lawn. They mixed concrete on the dirt in the lawn directly (Really, who does that ? Heard of a bucket ?). They took the liberty of using the neighbors water hose too. Oh wait, they also sprayed wood stain on the neighbors yard. Hah, to top it all of they even dumped the old fence door in the neighbors trash. When I asked them to clean it all up they did a very poor job at it. I had to pick up a showel and rake and clean it all up myself. 4) They hung the doors opening outwards when I had specifically asked to have it swing inwards. Like seriously ? They fixed this on day 2 after I pointed it out to them. The unsightly holes from installing in on the wrong side still remain though. 5) They left a gaping hole between the two doors. I had them fix this this after having to win an argument that the doors do no need over an inch to expand in the heat :-/. Overall the door was rehung three times to get it right. 6) They had given an option between a metal and a plastic latch during the quote process. I had asked for details on the latch but they ended up making the decision for me and just installing the expensive metal latch. 7) The space between the post and the wall needed to filled in (Note, this space would not have been present if they had installed the post in the right place). The wood pieces they placed there were not flush at all. They clearly do not know how to measure. Overall a disaster. Santiago and his crew are highly inept and unprofessional. I would be wary of hiring them to do any job. read more
