To be honest, not sure what to expect as it was a referral from a neighbor. The quotation process was quick and thorough. I already had an idea what I wanted with my deck and landscape but actually got better suggestions and recommendations from Jack when he scoped out my yard. Jack definitely knows what he's doing and his experience shows through his recommendations. Ultimately I agreed and let him run with his ideas and to my surprise, actually came below my budget by 10%, not to mention looking 10x better than what I originally drew up. The best part of the experience is that Jack is actually a degreed mechanical engineer like myself which makes the communication so much easier because his answers were very technical and that shows he knows what he's doing. For me, the worst part of dealing with contractors is that most of them (99% of them) are just a bunch of knuckleheads with 5th grade arithmetic skills. Trust me, there is nothing worst than that, especially when you are relying on them to design a sturdy and safe deck for you and your family. Why would you want a 5th grader rather than engineer build your deck? I realize that not all decks require an engineer to build but to me it's peace of mind and the best part is that Jack turns out to be cheaper than all the other quotes I got!! Do yourself a favor. Use Jack and his crew and forget the rest. I usually hate dealing with contractors but this was by far the most pleasant experience I've ever had. Found Jack's Decks through Yelp last summer. We had to re-do our old deck, and decided to go with Jack due to the good reviews on Yelp. Got ideas from Jack's website on how we were going to re-do the deck. Jack came over, and did an estimate in a timely manner. I drew what I wanted, and he made some subtle changes to my drawing for the better with his knowledge and experience. His crew are hard working, always on time, and cleaned up after each day. Jack is really easy to get a hold of either email, text, or calling, and always got back to me in a timely manner. He has a very easy going personality, and is very easy to work with. As with any remodeling, you need to inspect the day by day work that meets your criteria. If there was anything I was not sure of, or wanted different, I would always be in communication with Jack. His crew would accommodate what I want. Building a custom deck is dynamic, and things could change. Don't wait until the job is completed if you wanted to have something done differently. Do the changes while the job is in progress. As a result of the great communication I had with Jack, and his crew (they being very accommodating), my deck is exactly what I wanted, and more. I am so very impressed with the work Jack and his crew did. As other reviewers have stated, they finished in about two weeks. We looked at several different deck builders and general contractors to build our deck and arbor. We chose Jack's Decks, as he was straightforward and experienced in designing and building. His design and material choices were superb. Jack listened to what our vision was, and then came back with a detailed drawing of the design, complete with the choice of wood and all the materials that he would be using. Jack and his workers started on time and finished the project within the time frame he stated. More importantly, he was there to manage and work on the project the entire time. Unlike other contractors who show up at the beginning of the project and are then gone, Jack was there the entire time and made sure that I understood exactly what was happening, and if there were any issues that arose, he was there to address them. He recommended Cumuru for the deck and redwood for the arbor, two beautiful woods that look amazing, especially when they are built correctly. I recommend these guys to anyone. Their workmanship is superb, and their they went above and beyond what we had expected. Best thing, there were no "surprise" extra charges. We hired Jack's Decks to build an entire wrap-around deck for our backyard. Since our house is built on a hill, the deck is the only source of "backyard" we have. From the beginning to the end of the project, Jack was professional, reliable, extremely honest, and most of all, there were no surprise extra cost or delays. His crew was on time everyday, and they cleaned after each day's work. I contracted Jack, based on other Yelp reviews, to replace my existing deck with a new composite deck, and to provide a new wooden gate to meet current San Jose pool codes. Jack was very forthright in his recommendations and options, and was timely with his quote. Ultimately, I changed my mind and decided on an Ipe wood deck, because of its look and its durability, and also Jack's experience with Ipe. I also discussed a desire for a fire pit on the deck, and Jack indicated he could also provide that as part of the contract. Jack's team were courteous and very professional. The workmanship is excellent, and the final result is fantastic. The deck is rock solid, and after oiling is gorgeous, and I love the fire pit. The gate also came out very well. This deck builder built a more simple (but elegant) deck for me in 2004, which I really loved (and still looks good)! So when I was looking for a deck contractor again in 2012, I had Jack's Decks design & build my whole back yard. I now have beautiful landscaping (including koi pond & waterfall), a gorgeous deck, outdoor shower, outdoor kitchen (including sink & 2 built in gas grills). On top of that, they redesigned the roof of my house to blend into the roof (or arbor or whatever you call it?) of the deck.
