I wanted to be excited about this place. From the reviews I heard many great things. Plus Oakland doesn't have alot of good barbecue joints. So after driving by a million times, we finally decided to stop one morning. They're located inside the liquor store & have their own little parking lot... We ordered the brisket breakfast sandwich & potatoes to go. We get home, open it up, potatoes were cooked regular. Could've used some seasoning.. the sand-which had a thick piece meat, egg, cheese. Upon biting... the brisket was really chewy, I mean chewy chewy and red still. Not my cup of tea. I like fully cooked meat. The second time we came in for lunch.. ordered salmon with potato salad & a side or hot links. So, i'm unsure what is it... but that salmon was definitely not cooked thoroughly & smelled of raw fish. You could tell just by the smell alone and the looks, it had no seasoning. I didn't even taste it that's how unappealing it looked/smelled. Ok, so I've been going to another BBQ joint for years. I'm a BBQ snob. I'm from the south where it's done right. And so many places in Cali has super fatty brisket, charred ribs and garbage sides. And they usually overcharge to boot. I was sad when during covid that other BBQ joint's quality started to slide. I mean their service was never good but the food was. This my friends is the definition of serendipity. We decided to go out on a limb. Some of the neighbors on next-door were raving about this new barbecue place. We found this "smoakring" barbecue joint right around the corner. I couldn't believe it we were scared of a new place but hey you know you only live once hopefully right? I got to tell you it was one of the happiest surprises I've had in a long time. The meat is amazing the ribs are amazing and the chicken is good too. The sides are absolutely outstanding. My partner loves the sweet rolls too. It's crazy because it's not super busy, I don't think it's really caught on in the neighborhood yet. I hope they do. The food here is off the hook. The guy is literally smoking meats in a giant smoker out front, and after passing by so many times in the past I just couldn't resist this time. And I am so happy I tried it! Everything was so perfectly done, and affordable for the portions. I got the Triple Combo Plate, which included a generous portion of brisket, three large chicken wings, a beef sausage link, potato salad and a fresh roll. For $25 this was a lot of food and much more than you get from other places. The bark on the brisket was so dark and tasty, the chicken was perfectly done and the sausage was packed with smoky spicy flavor. Perhaps a little dry, but smothering it in their perfect homemade BBQ sauce solved that problem. They also serve breakfast with smoked salmon which I can't wait to try! read more

The best salmon smoked I have eaten. So good, our vegan guest had to give it a try and was not disappointed to break his diet. Checked out SmOakRing today for lunch. It's tucked away in a convenience store that is quite a jewel itself. Lots of great snacks, drinks, and a legit beer and whisky selection. Ordering at SmOakRing was easy. There was no line at around 1:30 pm on a Saturday. We went with the Triple Combo Plate with brisket, chicken wings, ribs, and potato salad. Everything was pretty good! I think the highlight were the chicken wings. They tasted fresh, were juicy, the sauce had great flavor. They tasted like they came straight out of someones backyard bbq. The brisket was tender, but a little too lean and a little dry for my preference. But still good. Same with the ribs. Meat falls off the bone, and has a nice sweet flavor imbued into the meat. Just a little dry though. They did provide plenty of their awesome homemade BBQ sauce though to slather all over that meat. The sweet bread roll was a nice touch. The potato salad was simple and hit the spot. I'd come back if in the neighborhood! Or would take a short drive here rather than go to some other local BBQ spots with crazy wait times. read more

Hands down the best BBQ spot I've ever been to. It looked like nothing. It's inside of a liquor store, and there's one man on the grill in the parking lot, but that's when I knew it was going to be a hidden gem. I got 6 plates for my family and I, and everyone flipped for how delicious the BBQ was. I got 4 rib plates with potato salad, and 2 brisket plates, 1 of them with links. My only downfall was that everyone was pissed I didn't get 3 way combos so they could have had some of everything. Now I must go back again and get more food. I've been here twice and both times I received delicious BBQ. I've had the brisket, links, ribs and wings. They are all good, but I am partial to the brisket and wings. Plus, the sauce, which I usually don't like on my BBQ is delicious. ASks for the sides, I believe they only offer two, baked beans and potato salad. The baked beans are savory, which I prefer, but I'm not a fan of the flavor. They aren't nasty, just not for me. I've had better potato salad, but when choosing from their two sides, I will get potato salad each time. OMG! For dessert, I've had the cinnamon roll cheesecake, lemon bar, chocolate chip cookie and oatmeal cookie. The cheesecake and chocolate chip cookie are DELICIOUS. I'd stop by just to pickup dessert. The oatmeal cookie was good, but it was more like chocolate chip cookie meets oatmeal cookie, and I was expecting something closer to the classic. Amazing spot a must try. Ample parking. The person at the counter was very friendly. I tried the sausage breakfast sandwhich and the salmon breakfast sandwich with the side of potatoes. They were some of the best breakfast sandwiches I ever had. The side potatoes were great. The prices were very reasonable. I brought an order of the same thing to my wife as well and she was amazed. Today I went to Smoak Ring BBQ, 2020 MacArthur (next to Grand Lake Kitchen). I highly recommend them! I've been going to E&J's for 35 years so I feel like a traitor saying this but, sorry E&J, Smoak's brisket is far superior (sauce on the side). Their beans were better too. The links are different but as good or better than E&J. The ribs were drier and don't fall off the bone like E&J. Smoak has superior desserts home-baked by the sister. Their service was friendlier but not as fast as E&J. This is understandable since they've only been at this location for the last 4 weekends. SUPER DELICIOUS... but I'd avoid the links until they get their link game together. Found out about this place from a friend of mine and I'm glad of it. It's in a bottle store/liquor store but don't let that deter you, a whole section is walled off for them. We got a 3-way combo with brisket, ribs & a spicy hot link. It came with choice of sides and bread with garlic butter on the side. We chose beans and potato salad, both outstanding. The brisket and ribs were ABSOLUTELY FREAKING DELICIOUS and we'll be back for those for sure. Everything has a wonderful Smokey flavor and it was juicy and flavorful. The BBQ sauce is good but I wish they had a version with a bit more kick in it. The link was very mealy and crumbly inside and the fat had separated from the meat. Also, we each bit into a pea-size bits of gristle even though we each only had one bite. Sorry but minus one star for the inedible hot link which was either not made properly (with too much heat), or cooked to long on at high heat. Too much heat in the making or cooking process can be the cause of a texture issue like this. If link gets too warm too quick while being made, it will BREAK... just like a sauce will break if not made properly. This means that the fat and protein will separate from each other when cooked and you end up with this exact mealy/crumbly texture that we experienced. We got served a link that should have gone in the round file aka trash. It was not a good experience. We each had one bite and the rest got thrown away. Everything else was absolutely on point and we'll be back for the ribs, brisket and delicious sides. read more

Smoker is in the parking lot and prep/serving space on one side of the Two Star Market convenience store (which has a great beer selection). Really pleasant staff and service good - I called in my order and it was ready for me on time. Got a brisket dinner for $22 and a side order of two ribs for an extra $7 plus a side of potato salad made with oillives and pickles. Brisket was tender & SUPER moist (unlike some of the other review comments which said dry) and had a very smoky flavor. Ribs moist and tender as well and on a par with Horn's, the last place I tried. Yes I have at least another meal from this dinner. Potato salad was good and BBQ sauce was sweet and smoky. Totally worth trying. Open til late.
