The old man working there is a nasty thief. I pulled in, no greeting. He looked under the hood, checked the vin, never started it, and hooked up the gadget under the dash with some fiddling. Doesn't say a word, and charges me $17.00. THEN TELLS ME IT FAILED BECAUSE IT WAS TAMPERED WITH, AND THE CONNECTOR SHOULDN'T BE HANGING! Awesome customer service. First time I ever smogged a car out here in southern Nevada and found out about their once a year thing compared to California. But non the less it was a cheap and fast experience. In and out. Probably would've been quicker but there was someone ahead of me. 96 Accord. Passed and done til next year. You can never go wrong with a honda, smog wise. Yelp coupon was accepted and boom. Next.. registration. If you know your car will pass smog then I recommend this place. I took my father's car to Smog Busters for it's check-up. We've used Smog Buster for years. First location was on Sunset. No greeting, he just takes the coupon and gets to work. He checks the odometer and then the connector. He then spends another few minutes getting the VIN and checking under the hood. He finally says he can't perform the check because the computer connector is not permanently mounted to the car, it's just dangling by its wires. Some mechanic or technician must have broken it off it's mounting, but it's been this way for years. Now, all of the sudden, it's a no go at the smog station. So I say, I can't imagine how that affects anything as it's just the connector for the computer diagnostic system on the car -- not just smog. He says it's considered part of the emissions system, if it's not connected to the dash it could have been tampered with. (Huh? What if someone tampered with it and then put it back in its place?) Lame reason for not doing a smog check but I'm sure it's written somewhere by the State of Nevada and the guy is just doing his job. So, I figure I'll go try another place just to see if it's a legit reason. Again, no greeting, no thanks for using Smog Busters. Nothing. The guy there, after looking the car over, says he can't do it. I say, why not? He replies, I can't do it. So I ask again, why can't you do it. He tells me the same thing the other guy did. I was a little agitated by now and said again it's just a connector and it's been that way for a long time. I didn't yell or swear, I didn't attack the guy personally, didn't try to talk him into doing the check anyway -- I was just annoyed over a stupid rule. This guy retorts with, the customer is always right, but in a snotty, condescending way, and repeats it again as he walks away to the next car. No, I'm sorry, ma'am. No, I understand you're upset, ma'am, but those are the rules. No good bye. Nothing but a rude attitude. That is NOT great customer service. UPDATE: From 3-stars to 1-star. I got home and did some research, and I can not find any rule or law that addresses a broken or missing mounting. I think Smog Busters may have the rules a little convoluted and should not have refused service. Note: my comments and clarifications appear in [brackets] in the three points below. 1. from the Nevada DMV G1 Inspector's Handbook: NAC 445B.5805 Inspection of Vehicle; Item 4(c): The Inspector shall issue a vehicle inspection report indicating that the vehicle did not pass inspection if: The vehicle has a data-link [OBD] connector that is missing [it wasn't], has been tampered with or is inoperable [it hasn't and isn't], including related electrical circuitry. 2. from the Department of Consumer Affairs, Bureau of Automotive Repair, Smog Check Technician Licensing Exams, Candidate Information Bulletin: NAC445B.452 Tampering Defined: "Tampering" means rendering inoperative or intentional misadjustment of any motor vehicle device or element of design intended to control exhaust emissions [the mounting doesn't control anything]. 3. from www.epa.gov/obd/questions: "Can the OBD system be repaired, deactivated, or modified?" The rule of thumb when it comes to emisions-related vehicle repair is that any modification changes the vehicle from a certified configuration to a non-certified configuration is considered tampering. [It explains intent with the example of using a straight pipe in place of the catalytic converter. It then says,] Likewise, overriding the OBD system through the use of high-tech defeat devices ... would be considered tampering [A high-tech mounting? lol]. None of the information addresses a missing mounting and a mounting certainly doesn't control any exhaust emissions; it just holds the connector in place. The specific concern to the EPA and the State of Nevada is the emissions system. Neither tech actually checked to see if the connector had been tampered with or was inoperable. IMO, turning away a customer for a missing mounting is unnecessary. read more

We used to go to this particular location for our 4 vehicles for the longest time. The employee never said hello. Instead, he asked for and insurance card or registration. The driver couldn't find the current information. The driver said he couldn't find either of them. When the driver finally found the registration, the employee took it and said that's what I asked for awhile ago. The driver said I'm sorry, but you could lose the chip off your shoulder. The employee threw the registration back at us and said you can go elsewhere and to get the f***ing BMW off his lot. Driver said excuse me? Employee said you have 1 minute to get out or I will call the police for trespassing and stormed away. He also stated that he would turn us in to the DMV for some reason. Passenger got out of the car and asked why he used the F word. Employee restated the trespass. I asked for his name and his supervisors name, to which he refused. Instead he threw the F bomb again. We went down the street to DMV Drop. It cost less, didn't ask for registration, and were very pleasant. I emailed the corporate office, and they haven't replied. It has been 6 days, so far. read more
