I recently had a bad experience with a smog shop in my neighborhood. In two separate visits I tried to work it out with the vendor with no success. IMO this vendor is getting too old and has lost his edge. He should retire at once. Creeping senility is the kind outlook: the less optimistic version is that he is a shady guy with questionable business practices. 1. He overcharged me. The publish rate was $67, he charged me 79. I have disputed this charge with my bank. 2. The car passed all the smog checks, except that it doesn't have a Hood Emission Label. Yes, the car has passed smog checks every two years since 2001. I went to the Mercedes dealer, they don't make those labels anymore, there's no way I can get one since replacement labels no longer exist. What they do now is provide a Letter of Conformity. I provided this letter to the vendor, but now he says he needs an engine family number. The dealer told me to call Mercedes national office, which I did, and they provided a letter of conformity with the engine family number included. The vendor said it was the wrong number. I double checked with both the dealer and the national office, confirm that the number provided was indeed correct. 3. On my second visit, the vendor still refused to pass the vehicle for a smog check, again referred to the nonexistent hood emission label. He is simply wrong, and could easily smog the car on the basis of the full Conformity letter from Mercedes-Benz. read more

Terrible experience. I was told my vehicle passed, when it hadn't, due to the computer not being ready. They should have told me this prior to testing. I was charged for the state certificate and transfer fees, when I didn't get those. When I called the owner for an explanation, I was told to to bring it back in for a free retest after driving it for a bit. I came in twice on Saturday during their posted hours, and the shop was locked up, and no one was there. When I came in on Monday, I was told the vehicle computer still wasn't ready. I had to show them on my own scan tool that it was ready to get them to test it again. Then I was denied the promised free retest and charged again. I had to argue with the technician to not pay the certificate and transfer fees again, since I never got them the first time I paid for them. At least it passed. read more

I was given a quote on the phone, ($59.95) and brought my car in. It didn't pass the smog check. I was told that it didn't pass because my battery was new, and to drive my car for about 100 miles, then bring it back, and the man (owner) would recheck it for free. I did that, and when it did pass, he refused to do the recheck for free. He charged me an extra $40.00. I warn you never to go here. This man is dishonest. Absolutely insane. I called he said 20 minutes, I walked in he said 40 minutes. I went a few doors down to get food and watch he never went anywhere near my car. So I have to go and asked him if my car was done and he said ohhh the systems down o haven't started yet (when I watched him wonder around the parking lot) I asked for my keys because I can't stay any longer. He threatened if I leave he would fail my car. He said he had my vin number and would fail me. I am demanding my keys at this point and he basically throws them at me and begins raising his voice. They failed my smog test claiming that I had a third party catalytic converter, when in reality I had installed a new OEM direct from Toyota. The shop filed that I had tampered with parts, and when I brought it to my regular shop where I had the converter replaced - they affirmed it was an OEM part, and passed my smog test. (I didn't go to them originally because they weren't open on the weekend and I was aiming to tackle a to-do list). For the employee that works there: OEM converters do not have serial numbers on the side, they don't come with numbers on them. Bait and switch scam. Do NOT give them your business. I was quoted $55 for a smog test over the phone and ended up paying $100 when all was said and done. Complete scam and way overpriced for San Diego rates. Read below if you want to hear about my negative experience. - Called and got a quote of $55 for the "online special" - Went to get smog done. Failed visual inspection because of aftermarket air intake, which is not their fault. The intake is carb legal via an exemption, but I didn't have the sticker. My two options were either put the stock intake back on or request the exemption sticker from the manufacturer. - The owner told me he would not charge me for the re-test when I returned and asked me to pay before I left. I was fine with that even though his tech didn't run the actual smog test. He only did the visual inspection. - The owner then said it would be $70 because he wouldn't do the free "re-test" if he charged me the special rate of $55. Again, I was fine with that even though the tech only did the visual inspection. I figured I was essentially paying the normal price in advance for when I returned. - I returned a week later. The tech remembered me from the week before. He was there when the owner said the "re-test," which was really the first test, would be free. The tech ran the smog test and my car passed without any problems. The tech then told me it would be $30. - I reminded him the owner said it would be free. The tech said the "re-test" was free, but I still had to pay DMV fees. I pointed out it was a shady bait and switch tactic, as I already paid them $70. The tech seemed to agree with me and even said he pointed that out to his boss previously. - I paid the money because another $30 isn't worth the trouble, but I will never do business there again and I strongly urge you NOT to go to this place. read more

Super simple joint with a friendly Persian guy named Bobby. Had a long ish conversation about certain subjects that he and I had opinions on and overall made my experience super quick. I was in and out in 15minutes at most. I had expired Tabs due to being out of the Country and thought I'd have to pay a lot but overall was satisfied due to the fact of the military discount and the tax exempt fee that was waived due to my military status. He immediately walked away from the business and began chatting, laughing and socializing with a man who was definitely not a customer. I waited 5 minutes and asked him how long the test was going to take. The tech waved his hand at me, completely dismissing me and continued his conversation. Total scam artist business. My girlfriend needed to get her car smogged and I offered to help because she has a hectic schedule. They quoted me $60 over the phone. I took her car in the same day. After the smog test was done, the owner said the total was $89.95. I said that I was told it would cost $60 when I called and asked why it was so expensive. He said it's because the DMV fees and started getting aggressive when I questioned it. I asked why that wasn't disclosed over the phone. It's a two man show with the technician and owner. The owner had an accent, so I could tell that's who I talked to over the phone. He said it's a standard charge from DMV and not be business. I told him I wasn't paying that and he then threatened to call the police. Who does that? I told him to call them so we could sort it out. After arguing for a few minutes, he told me he'd accept $75 if I paid cash. I ended up paying $80 on my Visa card. The business is shady and the owner is a scam artist. Read the other Yelp reviews. Shady business tactics here, steer clear. Upon initial drive up I was told the smog price would be $85 plus certificate which I then questioned because it was a $20 higher base than everywhere else in town. The owner then begrudgingly agreed to $80 total(which was still high but I was already there so I decided the convenience was worth it). After he smogs my truck (and it passes the emissions test) he casually says you didn't pass. I ask why and he points to the catalytic converters and says those aren't CA compliant, I couldn't find a number on them. I get down under the truck, and low and behold there is a huge stamped number on both, read them off to him and he says alright. Then he points to the CA specific headers and says those don't have a number stamped on them. I climb into the engine compartment and point at the easily readable number on the headers and he persists to say that is a part number. So I left dumbfounded and went to do my own research. Yes Babak, that is a part number that is very easily referenced on the ca.gov C.A.R.B. website. I called him back to take him up on the free retest he offered but he then backtracks and says he will have to charge me again. What?! So essentially he took my money to fail a good emission system. Do your job correctly, not assuming everyone is wrong. He may be able to handle stock vehicles, but don't waste your time otherwise. Thanks for just wanting to take my money. read more

Showed up at 1030am on a Wednesday and got my car checked immediately. Was done in 15 minutes. That's about a third of the time I've ever spent getting smogged. Gentleman helping was very friendly and efficient. Especially since he knew I still had to make it back to the dmv to get my tags. Lesson learned. Don't let your registration go overdue if you need a smog check. But because this place was fast I got two trips to the dmv and a smog check done before 4pm. Three stars for price transparency and service. I called prior to bringing my car in to see how much it would be. I was quoted $49 for a smog. When I went to pay, it came to $79. The additional, unquoted amount was for the certificate and an up charge for "STAR". The person on the phone should ask if it's a Star smog or not before quoting, if the prices are different. I called around thinking this would be the best deal and I feel bamboozled. Another location a block away, quoted me $65 which would have included the certificate and a Star smog. The owner was nice and offered a $5 coupon. Although kind, be careful as the charges aren't clear, candid nor transparent. Regarding service: there was a younger male working the station and the owner in the office. The younger employee was rude, didn't provide clear instructions and I should have left and taken my business elsewhere. I parked my car in a space near the shop. I was told I had to move it myself, even though there were two other cars inside of the garage. I asked where exactly to put it, and the young male, who seemed annoyed and like he didn't want to be there, pointed where the second car was sitting. After moving my car and turning it off, I get out and he tells me it's not in the right place. I asked again where he wanted it. He snapped at me and said "right there". He wanted it to be pulled up another foot. So I asked if my tires should be on the floor mechanism or not, again in a rude way said no. But still didn't give clear instructions where. After a few times attempting to get it where he needed it, he took out his AirPods and helped. He could have easily moved the car where he wanted himself or nicely directed me where he needed the vehicle. This young employee needs a lesson on customer service and how to treat people, let alone customers who are paying for a service. Called earlier in the day for a price check on a Star SMOG and the guy said it would be $59. I'm glad I double checked on their hours because on YELP it says they close at 5:30 but the staff member I spoke to said they close at 4:30. However, he said I could come in at 4:45 and he'd wait. When I got there, I filled out paperwork and that's when he told me about the Certificate and DMV transmission fee which added an additional $11. I didn't even think to ask about those extra items when I called for the quote so my total came up to around $73 when all was said and done. I could have gotten $3 off had I brought cash--which I rarely carry. Oh well. The process was really quick and I was out the door in less than 10 minutes. Why only 3 stars? I would have appreciated them telling me on the phone when I called earlier that the cost of the test would be $59 and that extra fees would be charged. Came for a smog check and failed the first time, took my car to the mechanic and got the issue fixed and came back for the free retest. When I came back on a Saturday at 9:30am during normal business hours, they were closed and I called their number, left a message and nobody answered. Totally agree with the other comments....these guys are BAD NEWS! I called yesterday for a quote (along with several others) and they were the best of them all. $49 + $6 for the certificate. In the next breath, he said they would waive the $6 and call it $49 all-in. That beat my next best deal at $53, so I went in today. The guy doing the work was really nice and quick. Once done, he handed me the paperwork and told me to go inside to pay. That's when I met the bad guy. He took my paperwork and said $89. I said WHAT?.....I called yesterday and was told $49. He told me that was the coupon price and asked if I had a coupon. I told him I did not and that I was quoted $49 just yesterday with no mention of a coupon. He agreed to give me the coupon price then said $69......WHAT???? I asked what the extra $20 was for and he said it was for the certificate. I told him that when I called I was quoted $49 + $6 for the certificate, not $20 and then was told the $6 was waived and I was $49 all-in. He gave me more crap and I showed him my notes from my calls for quotes and showed him where I wrote $6 then crossed it out. He got pissed off and eventually agreed to the $49 but I would have to pay in cash....no credit card. I gave him $60 and he gave me $10 back, asking if I wanted the nickel. I asked about the nickel and he said "It's $49.95" I was done at this point....not worth arguing about a dollar so I just left so I could get right on Yelp and share my story. Please read the negative reviews on here + avoid this place! I took my car in for the standard CA smog check after receiving a coupon for $45 from Bobby. This did not even end up being a deal because after the state fees + tax it came to $59.95 (the exact price I was quoted a literally every other establishment in the area.) That was fine though, the really upsetting part was after my check was complete I returned from running a quick errand and Bobby was next door, not even in the shop. My car was left with all the doors open and completely unattended. He finally came back and was so distracted on the phone the entire time I was trying to finish my transaction he made a huge error. I paid with my debit card + entered my pin, and he handed me my receipt + sent me on my way saying everything was good and it is in the DMV's system as complete. I got home and 20 minutes later I received a call from Bobby saying my pin didn't go through and he needed my card info again, which seemed sketchy to me, but OK. I told him I would get back to him after I checked with my bank. Before I had a chance to do so I received not one, but two hostile voicemails from him explaining that the DMV is going to flag my VIN number as the check was being reported as unpaid. Totally unacceptable from a customer service standpoint to put me at fault when I left his establishment fully believing I had paid in full, and that everything was good to go. With reluctancy I gave him a different CC number over the phone, so that I could track if it was a situation of fraud. I asked him to email me a receipt, which now five days later I still have not received... Long story short, there are too many other options near by to waste your time on a place that doesn't care about customer service. read more

First of all I'd like to say I generally dont bash small businesses being a small business owner myself. So it takes really horrible customer service for me to write this. Took a vehicle to get smogged. The vehicle didnt pass, but the problem was two fold. The owner couldnt tell me the reason why or what to do to correct it. Secondly he charged more than any other shop. Lastly, his attitude was so obnoxious, he told me, " you're a regular customer, I'll give you a free retest". Ive never been there before. Are you kidding me! I then went to a service shop who referred me to a smog repair shop. They hooked up the vehicle and asked me if the car had been sitting for some time? I said yes, they suggested I drive it for 30 miles and bring it back. I did so and it passed right thru. They informed me the other guy shouldve known this and just didnt care.
