There is no sign posted on front window of this business to inform customers about additional fees charged on top of Groupon payment. I dread taking my car in for maintenance. So even though I'd had the DMV notice that my little Honda Del Sol was due for its biennial smog inspection for a good two months, I waited until a couple days before the deadline to get it taken care of. Since I didn't have any particular place in mind and knew that smog check prices varied a lot, I Googled smog check coupons and found the handy little site www.smogtips.com. Enter your zip code and what kind of smog check you need, and it gives you a list of places in your area with little blurbs on each one and, best of all, coupons you can print out and take with you. That's how I found Smogs Just Smogs. In case you couldn't tell by the name, they only do smog checks. I think Just Smogs would've sufficed, but I guess some people really need it spelled out for them. Smogs. Just. Smogs. Got it? I saw something about SJS being open seven days a week, so I figured I'd go first thing on Sunday morning, assuming that it would probably be less crowded. The coupon I had was for the Santa Monica location (also on Venice Boulevard), but when I showed up I discovered that that location isn't open on Sundays. Some nice guys at the garage next door told me there was another SJS right down the street in Venice that was open on Sundays. (In looking at www.smogtips.com again later, I noticed that it says the Venice location is open seven days a week. It helps to pay attention, people. Now you know and won't make the same mistake I did.) So I headed over to the Venice location (a mere two minutes away) and arrived just as the technician was finishing up with the only other customer. Perfect. He pulled my car in and was done in about five minutes. I figured I probably couldn't use my coupon there (since it was technically for the SJS in Santa Monica), but he took it anyway, no questions asked. The total damage after the coupon was only $46.75, which is definitely less than I've paid elsewhere in the past. On top of the service being so quick, the technician working that day was really cool. After he'd rung me up, he commented that he liked Del Sols and inquired what the sticker on my car meant. It's written in French and translates to: "We're sorry our president is an idiot. We didn't vote for him." When I told him what it said, he smiled and nodded approvingly. Just one more reason to take my car back in another two years for its next smog. read more

Perhaps one of the worst experiences with auto services I have ever had. Went in to get my car smog tested. The prices are higher than other smog stations. The individual helping me was rude and after telling me my car failed he told me it would be $30 to retest even though the advertisement on his website said free retest within 90 days. RIPOFF I'm so furious right now . . . So the douchebag smogged my car. It passed all the clean air tests, but I failed because of a "check engine" light. I go to work, tell my boss, and he tells me they will always fail a car with the light. So why was the light on? Because the previous owner of my new car changed the oil himself and forgot to shut off the light for me. I went back to chat because the dude KNEW he was going to fail me when he drove my car into the stall. I knew I was going to be charged again once I fix the light, so I wanted to make sure he understood that when I come back, it was going to be for free. He would have none of it. I "politely" yelled at him, didn't cuss, etc. but am in the process of trying to find out who runs this company so he knows about it . . . except the website has no contact info. Instead, I went to a domain site and found the person who registered the domain, so I hope I'll be able to speak with someone and get some satisfaction. If I do, I will change this review. I checked out the interwebs for a smog check place close by. Smogs Just Smogs fit the bill, AND they accept local coupons! I took a late lunch and headed over there today (Monday afternoon) and there was no waiting, no line. Gustavo was really nice, and had my car done in less than 10 minutes! 2002 BMW Z3. The cost at this time is $50, plus $10 for the certificate. I think if you have a car that is 1995 or older, you have to pay an additional $10 for some extra testing they have to do, but that is on a sign inside the shop. You can print a $10 coupon from their website, or bring in a local coupon from another test only facility, and that will bring the cost down a little, or at least pay for the certificate. One of my problems is that I spend an obscene amount of time researching places, then end up not being able to choose. Smog checks are no exception. I generally find it impossible to really distinguish among places when reading reviews online, and also, who spends more than a few minutes researching places to get a smog check (no comment)? My fiance, seeing me going around in internet circles, closed my computer and told me to come to this place "just down the street." He had brought his Roadster here for a smog check without any hiccups. I'm glad he forced me to close my computer. It took me five minutes to drive to Smogs Just Smogs, then another, oh, ten minutes to be back in the car and on the road. Car passed, paid $50. I didn't catch the name of the man working (from other reviews, I will guess it is Gustavo?), but he was so friendly. Awesome place I came here for a smog because the letter from the DMV that I got said I needed a Star Station. Called ahead to schedule an appointment I was told I didn't need one and could come anytime but if I wanted to make one I could. Scheduled anyway. Got there for my appointment it was fairly empty the kid there was doing a smog so he said it was a 5 min wait while he finished. Waited and he was quick and got me out of there in about 25 mins. My husband went to this smog check center and was told that the car passed the smog check but there was a "computer glitch" and they would wink wink nod nod and look the other way if he paid the guy $160 cash. My husband left and went down the street and went to another smog place and the car passed the test no problems. I called the company, asked to speak to the manager, and the guy working there told me he is never in the shop because he owns 10 stores. I told him what happened and he tried to explain it away. When I told him I would be reporting this he got very quiet and didn't say anything more. Clearly this company tries to bribe and swingle customers. Beware! read more

This guy will gladly rip you off. First he didn't accept my Yelp 10 dollar off coupon, and then he ran the smog test even though my car wasn't ready and needed to go through a drive cycle. Unlike the good guys, who tell you to go drive on the freeway and come back, this guy will swipe your card like everything is fine, and then tell you that you failed. 51 bucks out the window. Tried to come back and have it retested- 21 dollars for a retesting fee?! And a 8 dollar certificate? Do you mean EIGHT DOLLAR RECIEPT to commemorate the worst service ever !? Stopped by here on a Sunday to get my car smog checked. One of those annoying things connected to owning a car. There was only one guy working and he was super friendly and efficient. I ended up waiting about 20-30 minutes total since there was one lady ahead of me. The process was painless and I even saved $10 by printing out a coupon (http://www.smogtips.com). This shop is on Lincoln and very close to the corner of Venice. There is a gas station on the corner and the smog shop is right next door. If you look for a sign that says "Smogs Just Smogs" (as the coupon says) you won't find it so just look for the address and a place that says Smog Checks.
