However, two experiences involving specifically defined work scopes and customer-supplied fluids ultimately caused me to lose confidence in the shop. My 2018 GMC Acadia had developed a torque converter clutch shudder. I was following a specific OEM diagnostic/service approach that included a transmission fluid change. I discussed the scope with the Service Advisor, provided detailed written instructions, supplied the specified Dexron VI fluid, and left another copy of the instructions on the driver's seat for the technician. Despite this, Northridge used its own multi-vehicle ATF instead of the fluid I supplied. This wasn't simply a brand preference; it changed a controlled variable in an ongoing diagnostic process and set back my troubleshooting. The same work scope requested inspections of the engine/transmission mounts and CV joints as possible shudder sources, but the documentation I received did not record the performance or findings of those inspections. When I questioned the ATF issue, the Service Advisor became animated and raised his voice. I subsequently documented the issue in writing to the Service Manager/Owner and requested reimbursement. Northridge refunded the cost of that service, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, a similar issue occurred afterward. During a rear differential service, I supplied OEM lubricant because I specifically wanted the proper friction characteristics for that application. Despite the earlier ATF issue, Northridge again used its own fluids. I was charged for those fluids, and the lubricant I supplied was not returned. When I questioned the second fluid substitution, I again experienced an animated, raised-voice response from the Service Advisor. The recurrence after the first issue had already been formally addressed is what ultimately caused me to lose confidence in the shop. I am not suggesting Northridge is incapable of satisfactory routine automotive service. However, if you specify particular fluids, parts, inspections, procedures, or a defined scope of work, my experience suggests verifying what was actually used and ensuring requested work and findings are documented. For me, following the agreed scope and responding professionally when legitimate questions are raised are fundamental to trusting a repair shop. After these experiences, I chose to take this work elsewhere or perform it myself.
