The owners are very nice and attentive. The rooms are clean and nicely decorated. The breakfast was very good that was included in the price of the room. The down side is not all areas are easily accessible. The ramps are steep into the buildings with the rooms. I didn't see how to easily access the restaurant on the top of the hill. There is a septic tank smell in the parking lot and near the Peir building where my room was located. The tv is very small for today's standards and I didn't enjoy the direct tv channels. The noise between rooms is very difficult to ignore. The WiFi was spotty also And this will sound crazy but the building rocked when couples were engaged in certain activities in their rooms. The rooms are clean, although as with any vacation-oriented hotel, there are some upkeep items that are needed. The view from the Anchor building is quite nice. Well worth it and the selection of food is excellent. We paid around $200.00 a night for the six days we stayed and found it superior to other hotels priced similarly. Housekeeping is not done everyday. AC is very loud and TV is very small. Room is part carpet and part flooring. Toilets use a septic tank. I was a long time customer of great secluded hotel in Southport, just outside of Boothbay Harbor. Ownership changed and unfortunately things have gone down for many years now. 2 years ago I discovered "Smugglers Cove"and was thrilled my experience and have just returned from my 2nd stay here. It was every bit as good as my first experience! They have it all, peaceful surroundings, beautiful view, boats and kayaks and a fantastic free hot breakfast! Their restaurant "727 Ocean," also serves delicious afternoon appetizers and dinner! The hotel room was plenty roomy with a large dresser with lots of storage for clothes. It has a large mini fridge, and K-cup coffee maker. Also, the doors are all fresh and new for easy operation. I would point out the shower tub is slippery so you should bring a shower mat in the event they can't provide one for you. My wife and I just love this place and will be making this our GO TO place in the Boothbay area. Can't wait to return. read more

What an amazing stay at Smuggler's Cove! My wife and I spent 8 nights at Smuggler's Cove in mid-September. While my wife is retired, she planned her first getaway to take me to my perfect, remote, lobster-filled, Maine retreat. Finding the perfect lodging was key. She crushed it! I think the best way to review our experience is to take you on a high level reflection. As we pulled up, it looked just like the photos we had seen on Yelp. The first main building (Dory) has the reception area, where you check in. There is plenty of parking around this area. Such a nice change from many places. Reception: When we came into the reception area, we were greeted by Megan (and Pickles, her little dog). Megan is FANTASTIC! She immediately greeted us and welcomed us genuinely to the Inn. She gave us the overview of the facility, bar/restaurant hours, housekeeping, gave us maps of the surrounding areas, and even some homemade check-in cookies (nice touch!). She offered to help us with anything we needed on-campus or any information or recommendations she could provide for off-campus. Honestly, we felt immediately like we had made the right decision to be here! Room: We stayed in the Pier building, which is closest to the harbor. Our room was on the second floor, so we really had an unobstructed view of Boothbay Harbor. The room seemed recently updated and was perfect! A nautical feel, with vaulted ceilings and plenty of room for suitcases and clothing. The bed was a king and very comfortable. Bathroom was smaller, but updated and had great water pressure. Room had a mini fridge and microwave, which is perfect to stock for when you just need a snack and don't want to have to hop in the car and figure something out. Additionally, the room had a great sized balcony with two Adirondack chairs. So perfect for chilling out with a glass of wine and watching the AMAZING sunsets. Restaurant (727 Ocean Sunset Bar): There is a restaurant on site, which is a HUGE bonus. You just don't want to have to drive around and find a restaurant or a cocktail all the time. The good news is you don't have to! The restaurant is multi-purpose, to accommodate daytime and evenings (closed Tuesdays). In the morning, they serve a very nice breakfast buffet from 7:30-9:30am. Lenny puts out a great variety of fresh food. There were always eggs, bacon/sausage, pancakes or waffles, fruit, pastries, bread/bagels, yogurt, juice/coffee. Really nice variety and what a terrific added bonus that comes with your stay! In the evening, the same facility is the bar/restaurant from 4-9pm. It's a full bar with a great selection. We had the bonus of having a terrific bartender/server/all around fun guy in Riley at the bar! He whipped up a perfect martini for both of us (and countless others which will go unmentioned). We also watched him make some tricky smoked cocktails (Manhattan maybe?), that he executed like a pro. Also, the food is really good! We had a few things throughout our trip: Clam chowder, Honey BBQ wings, Lobster Wontons, Summer Berry Salad, Cove Burger....all were fantastic. So nice to have such good food and selection a short walk from your room! Facility: On-site they have a big ice maker and beverage vending that are centrally located. They also have kayaks, paddle boards and row boats for your use at no charge. What was initially bizarre to me from other Yelper's photos, was the Airstream next to the pool. I thought "do they have people camping here too?". Nope. The Airstream is their cool way to store gear, like life vests, etc. You can help yourself to all of it. Everything is on the honor system, just use what you like and return it where it belongs - love it! The pool is salt water and I believe they said at 80 degrees. Whatever it was at, we used it and had a blast! There are towels always stocked at the pool, so no need to bring your own. What a treat to be able to swim and check out Boothbay Harbor from the pool! Housekeeping: Much the same as everywhere, housekeeping is by request. They will gladly make your room up fully when you request it. Or, if you need a towel swap, just ask. When we needed anything, housekeeping was very prompt. Smuggler's Cove is just a 10-minute drive outside of the main area of Boothbay Harbor. There are plenty of restaurants and shops in that area. It's also a 10-minute drive to Hannaford Supermarket. Close enough to what you'd ever want, if you ever wanted to leave. Far enough, that once you're back at Smuggler's, you feel like you're back in your semi-private, remote oasis. From the hospitality of the entire staff, the location, the comfort of the room, the views, the facilities/restaurant, to the overall value - this was a five-star experience! Our stay was from 7/3-7/8. This was our first trip to Maine, wanting to show our 13 year old daughter something other than the Jersey Shore. After a long 8 hour drive coming from NJ, we were thrilled to finally arrive @5pm. Upon arrival, we had a small glitch at check-in, but the young woman at the front desk was more than accommodating. We were delighted to see the view from our room in the Pier. We enjoyed a quick swim before having dinner that night at 727, followed by cornhole and a campfire as the sun begins to set. This was all on our first night! Breakfast each morning was delicious. Sometimes we had a leisurely seat outside on the deck, sometimes we had a grab and go as we had bookings for sails and meet ups with family. Our time at the pool was lovely. We learned early to get the chaise chairs at the end of the pool so that we could relax and stare at the gorgeous blue cove in between swims in the pool. My daughter and husband tried the kayaks once; well, let's say *tried* being the key word. Everyone was safe and there were many laughs. We loved the evenings around the campfire. My husband has no problem starting the fire, but one evening we had no idea where to get wood. A young woman in the office brought us plenty and packages of smores in a bag - more than enough for our family and another couple sitting with us. The area was beautiful, the staff was so accommodating. At one point on our last night I said to my husband, "How will we ever deal with people in Jersey again?" I am giving this 3 stars for it's lovely location and beautiful view. The Inn itself is in desperate need of updating however, the swimming pool was beautiful. We had a PIER ocean view room with a private balcony, the room was clean but very dated, the people above us were very loud on their feet and you could hear kids constantly running up and down the stairs. I will say... to our surprise the King sized bed was a lot more comfortable than we had imagined. During our stay a good number of people were having some sort of "block party" on the property with pop up tents and grills set up with kids running around EVERYWHERE... So we were not particularly fond of having to walk through them to get back and forth to our room. read more

Spent a couple of nights at the Inn. The rooms were clean and neat, but the television channels had over 100 channels on Direct TV for buying or promoting products. Regular cable channels few and far between. The hours of check in and out are not great for the tourist, but good for Innkeepers. Check out at 10:00 am really lousy. Our first trip to Boothbay area and absolutely recommend Smugglers Cove. We stayed at the newly renovated room in the Pier building and it was great! It is in the area of East Boothbay, which is near great hiking trails. The furniture and bedding were nice...clean and comfortable bed! The only suggestion would be to add some lighting in the area over the frig and microwave. The breakfast selection was more than expected for a "continental breakfast". We ate a light dinner there twice and want to give compliment's to the chef, as the food was that of a high quality restaurant. The chef even was kind enough to come out one night and ask us how everything was. The gentleman working during breakfast and dinner (can't remember his name, only that he came from Serbia) was very pleasant and responsive to requests. The view from our room was exceptional, the chairs, I want to buy them, we're the most comfortable Adirondack chairs I have sat in. The owners and staff should be proud. We were supposed to stay here in 2022, and meet up with my sister and bro-in-law. Unfortunately, on our way up I got ill with Covid and had to return home. We had been looking forward to the visit because my sister spoke glowingly about Smuggler's Cove and my family had been going on and off to Boothbay Harbor since I was a young child. We decided to try it again this year as part of a New England trip to get away from the Florida heat. We checked in fine (stayed in Dory) but noticed little things such as repaired steps not uniform in size or painted. We also noticed how drab the rooms had become and they just didn't look clean. This was borne out after seeing the tub that had tub grips in it and were yellowed with mildew. The walls apparently were repaired in the very small bathroom, at the ends of the shower rod, with filler and were left white and unpainted. Additionally we found at the end of the first evening when my wife took off her socks and they were black on the bottom. I had walked barefoot from the bathroom and around the room for a few minutes and had black feet. It was late so next morning I went to the office and showed the clerk the filthy washcloth from washing my feet. No apology, just a statement they would get someone to wash the floor and we were given a clean washcloth. The floor was washed by the time we came back to the room and was cleaner but not what someone would call clean. I know it is closer to the end of the season but there is no excuse for lack of maintenance. There were several areas of the room that just needed sprucing up, touch-up paint, etc. Additionally, the room had very few outlets; to the point where management placed a four unit extended into the wall to add outlets. Aren't these all the things you are supposed to address in the off-season! I am not saying everything is bad. The breakfast was good (don't eat the pre-made frozen pastries) with eggs, pancakes, bacon, fruit, etc.and the breakfast staff were friendly, efficient and helpful. The grounds were adequate though the upper parking lot could use a sealing and pothole fix or two. The resort is not disability-friendly and could use some thoughtful updates. We were so disappointed (even though it did not take away from the wonderful Boothbay Region visit we had). If the resort wants to continue to charge what they charge, all it would take to improve is a continuous inspection of all the rooms, some maintenance and attention to details, a freshen-up painting and detailed maintenance in the off-season. There is no excuse for not being clean. For us, we were dismayed, disappointed and will not return. read more

Expect a great view, a spot for the whole family and even the dog, and simple rooms that are comfortable. We stayed in the pier with a group of people staying throughout the resort. The king bed was extremely comfortable. I think this may be the building that has had the most attention and remodeling done. Because our group was spread out, I was fortunate enough to see most of the rooms. The pier king rooms are my favorite. My least favorite was the building that is attached to the office. My parents stayed in the room on the end near the restaurant, number 5. My mom was having difficulty sleeping because her bed was a little older and less comfortable. My family will be back with time for the kids to swim and for us to go out and kayak. A great deal on the quieter side of Boothbay. read more

All staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating, we ran out of some toiletries and they brought them right to our door!! Not only that but they gave us fresh baked cookies when we arrived. I was treating my daughter to a birthday getaway in BoothBay, Maine in July, 2019 and I chose to book a reservation at Smuggler's Cove Inn through the third party reservation website that Smuggler's Cove Inn chose to use. I would have rated them as follows, if I could have: 1.5 STARS FOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. When checking in we learned that the room I had booked was not the room we were being given. I booked a double room with a partial ocean view, which includes 2 full beds. We were being given a single queen sized bed. When I explained that I had booked a room with 2 beds I was immediately reprimanded for having booked through the third party reservation website that Smuggler's Cove Inn chose to use. The clerk (Theresa I think) and the manager, Marge, told me that it was the third party reservation website's fault and I needed to cancel with them and then I could rebook but I would have to pay an additional $65!!! I explained that I had reserved a double room with a partial ocean view, which is the only option for a double room at the third party reservation website. Marge would not budge until I assertively told her that I expected her to upgrade us without cost to me in front of other guests. That seemed to help her do the right thing. Mind you, she was blaming me throughout our numerous interactions for using the third party reservation website that Smuggler's Cove Inn chose to use!!! There was not an apology or even a shred of empathy. What a way to start my getaway with my daughter. The only reason I would have given 1.5 stars for customer service is because Marge eventually gave us what we deserved. But, unfortunately, in the process created unnecessary bad will. 4.5 STARS FOR THE ROOM. It was clean, comfortable and attractively decorated. 5 STARS FOR THE COMPLIMENTARY BREAKFAST. The grilled potatoes were the best we have ever had! The pancakes were fluffy and delicious. The fresh fruit was sweet and delicious. The coffee was strong; just right. It is so unfortunate how poorly and rudely we were treated. The staff needs to be trained to see things from the other person's perspective. We would have had a much more positive experience if either/both staff members had said "I know we have a lot of trouble with third party sites but we are going to do everything we can to make this work for you." This review is a repost because YELP removed my original review only because I mentioned the third party reservation website that Smuggler's Cove Inn chose to use. For the price we paid (we had a Groupon which worked out to be about 89 bucks a night), we weren't expecting much. This place was much nicer and more comfortable than I had anticipated. I've stayed in dives and in luxury hotels, and as long as you have reasonable expectations, you will not be disappointed staying here. It's a rustic-ish resort in Maine, right on an inlet in Boothbay and a short drive away from the town center. My husband and I spent a long weekend there for our anniversary with our dog, staying in the Lobster Lodge building back in late June. Sure, the bathroom was a little dated and the small CRT TV looked hilarious compared to the flatscreens that are everywhere now, but we were on vacation and I wasn't there to watch TV. It was a comfortable and clean room and I don't have any noise complaints to speak of. It may have been because it wasn't terribly packed when we went, but any hotel, no matter how luxe, is never going to be completely soundproof, especially when it comes to stomping children. I have no idea what the previous review is referring to with the "paths" no being passable. I didn't see any paths that led anywhere and with the dog, I covered the entirety of the property at least 30 times during the 3 days we were there (he's picky when doing his business). There were some families, couples and a whole bunch of dogs there and everyone of them seemed to be having a great time. The place has a pool, kayaks and small boats but the weather wasn't conducive to those activities when we stayed. We had no problem with the internet but rural and coastal Maine in general is not known for it's high-speed capability due to the overall lay of the land there. Our family came together in Boothbay to bury one of our own who passed last year and to have a family reunion in her memory. We booked many rooms at Smugglers Cove Inn. None of us had ever been there before and our experience was wonderful. But it's really about the staff. Meghan checked us in with a smile, shared Inn protocol, and answered any questions we had over the course of our weekend. When we asked if we could take over the dining room the next day after our memorial service and could we also have food and drink she connected us with Therese the manager who didn't bat an eye with our request. She immediately went into action speaking with her staff. They agreed to accommodate our large family group on short notice. The next morning, we met with Kimber and Sara the chefs who helped us decide what and how much food we needed. The variety of food was outstanding, chicken or beef sliders, chicken or fish tacos, platters of meat and cheese, veggies with different dips, guacamole, salsa, chips, bread, fish bites and muscles in a delightful red sauce and two kinds of cookies. I'm sure I'm forgetting something. These chefs are top notch, and I am a serious foody as are many of our family. We all agreed that the food and its presentation was 5 stars. The servers Aleksa and Shelby who were there throughout the weekend and our bartender Jake were fantastic as well. They never got flustered with any request and took care of our rowdy group with smiles. Jake made every drink requested and it was obvious that he was a seasoned and knowledgeable bartender. The rooms were well equipped, and everyone had a balcony with a view of the sunset over the water. There's a firepit which we took full advantage of, a heated pool, kayaks, canoes, cornhole and more. The views are outstanding. I have only one criticism and that is the rooms that connect need soundproof doors. We had one such room and could hear everything said on the other side as I'm sure they could hear us. That said I highly recommend Smuggler's cove. read more

On my second night of a 2 night stay, place was great for the price. Short drive to downtown boothbay. The outside seems dated but the insides are great! My in-laws stayed in a more modern area with a stove and coffee maker but my fiancée and I were content with the basics... The view is beautiful from the room and there is always a nice smell of sea water when outside. There is a small beach here and a pool... Pool is nice, goes up to 8 ft deep. Only room for improvement is to maybe clean up the building a little more that's all. Office staff is friendly and hospitable defiantly recommend... On vacation from California, first time visiting Maine and it was amazing. The staff and owners of the Inn were accommodating and beyond friendly. The rooms were clean and comfortable with a balcony and view. The owner's recommendations were spot on and made the trip that much better, he's awesome! I was looking for a quiet and reasonably priced place to stay that was on the Maine coast. Bingo. Comfortable, not fancy, I was at the Inn during a quiet time --- a week before Boothbay Harbor season really begins AND still in the throes of COVID. So, the restaurant was closed and breakfast was delivered to my door each morning (hanging from the knob). Not what I had expected but hey, COVID sucks. Still, the Inn is all about location. Beautiful spot. Peaceful as the place was likely not even half-full and I sat for three days all by myself on the floating dock in the bay reading novels and tanning nicely. The weather was perfect, which helps. I did take a kayak out, which was easy and lovely. And, it's just a 10:00 ride to the restaurants of Boothbay Harbor. A little "campy," but, again, very comfortable. The evening fire pit is a sweet spot if you want to chat a bit with new friends. I'd go back to Smuggler's for sure. read more

I wish I could give zero stars. We just showed up here for our first year wedding anniversary with out six week old infant. We made reservations in May and were really looking forward to a night away. They are closed for the season!! We got no notification, no call, no email nothing!! Our daughter just screamed all the way up here for two hours. We have to pee and are hungry. This is this worst experience I have ever had staying any where. Overall, this was a generally nice, very affordable, place to stay. The buildings themselves as well as the rooms could use a face lift, but all in all it was a clean, safe, comfortable place to stay. The view of the water was a little disappointing. It was still beautiful, but it definitely wasn't a grand view of the ocean. Unfortunately while we were there, the weather wasn't the best so we couldn't take advantage of the pool, kayaks, and other fun vacation-y activities available (at very reasonable prices, too). The owner of the place was incredibly nice, and made our stay very enjoyable. My biggest complaint is that there really isn't much to do in this area. The closest restaurant is about ten minutes away, and anything else is at least a 30 minute drive away. It's a very quiet town, which if that's what you're looking for, then you'll love it! My other complaint is the lack of wi-fi... which in these days is a little silly. We were unable to find anything online as far as restaurants or things to do unless we left the Motel. I booked this motel through Groupon and the price matched a lot of the amenities of the motel. While the ocean view was great from the shore, there were a few things that were less than expected. The motel website states that there is wifi and a mini fridge in every room. While the room was clean, neither for these promised amenities was in place. Apparently only some of the rooms on the Dory building have mini fridges. As for the wifi, the motel owners seemed to think this was working; when in face it was not. The only other disappointment was that the pool was closed. I can understand that we stayed over their opening weekend, but I had expected there to be an open pool during the open season. My main complaint was that the website was not very helpful in identifying the actual amenities and policies. Otherwise, this was a great place to stay if you have the right expectations. read more

2star ONLY because of location . Nice inn keeper trying to open and run this run down hotel with minimal help . No TV-said Time Warner cancelled -pool not opened-lights in room don't work. Beautiful location but dilapidated and many items broken or need updating. Shouldn't allow Groupons in this condition without stating what is NOT working . read more
