A classic. Unpretentious, classic simplicity. The bare basics done well. The staff is courteous, personable and helpful. The inclusive breakfast is varied, made fresh, and always presented well. The owner/host is present and deeply involved in the operations. If you recall what a solid bed and breakfast was, before AirBnB ruined it all, there are some elements of such an approach at the MoHo. There are Zero, BS, hotel industry embellishments. You bring what you need aside from a towel. Most of the rooms are unheated. Luckily, it's a duvet joint, not a blanket racket. I found that to an essential part of the charm. If you run a little cold, bring extra layers. No sirens, no cars, no airplanes or blaring music. Just the sound of the wind, songbirds, gulls, and dingy bells in the harbor. Melanie earns a 5 star for herself. Wow, what a lady! Home was cozy and adorable. Felt like you were stepping back in time but with some modern aspects. Loved the constant coffee and treats in the lobby. Don't expect to come here for the best night sleep. Full house means lots of footsteps and noise. But it's okay, we didn't expect to sleep in. We loved gathering in the living room and visiting with guests. It really is the perfect place to call home while exploring the island! read more

This place is a gem. Everyone is so helpful. There is a lovely old lobby, a wrap-around porch, coffee, tea, cookies, muffins in the lobby, plus a library and piano. The dining room is large. The rooms are comfortable and quite adequate. Bathrooms down the hall: these are many, so no crowding. They are modern and clean, lockable and thus private. Each floor has a fridge to keep things cold (vital for this diabetic). But oh, the food. Breakfast is big and a marvel. Truly a marvel. Best oatmeal, best omelet, best muffins, french eggs, that I've ever had (and I've traveled quite a bit). But you ain't seen nada yet. Dinner. The soups, the meats, the veggies, and on and on, are world class. I'm not finished. A little later in the evening comes dessert, out on the deck. Homemade pies and cakes, which again, are astonishing. Everyone there agreed, as they do for dinner and breakfast. The food alone makes Monhegan House a worthwhile experience, but the whole place is wonderfully old, and welcoming. We absolutely plan to return, every summer. No other place on the island, and perhap in Maine (we're Portlanders) has as good meals as this place. I'm told that the chef and wife are returning next year. The new owner is delightfully available, energetic, positive, a true leader in a clear, gentle way. The staff clearly love her. Go and gorge yourselves. Or, work there. Monhegan House is under new ownership. Friends and I decided to try dinner, although the PreFixe menu was pricey at $75 per person. There was an appetizer, choice of soup or salad, and 3 choices for the entree - no dessert. I chose the hangar steak. It was flavorful, but chewy. Unlike many restaurants, bread was extra and only 4 pieces for our party of 5. The server was friendly and attentive. I have frequented Monhegan House many times over the years under previous owners. Previously the price for dinner was reasonable enough to allow for frequent meals during my stay. At this price, I won't be returning. The majority of the visitors to Monhegan are teachers, artists and nature lovers, I feel like this restaurant is out of sync with the vibe of the simplicity of the island. read more

We actually stayed at The Cracked Mug across from Monhegan House. Melanie owns both. When you get off the ferry a truck will be waiting to carry your luggage but we were only there 2 days and opted to carry ours the .3 miles. There is delicious raspberry ice tea waiting upon your arrival. The Monhegan House has a beautiful porch with rocking chairs calling your name. Melanie, the owner, is a friendly, energetic, well traveled and hard working women (with so many interesting stories to share) who treats her employees with respect. It is obvious they enjoy working there. Breakfast is included in your stay and let's just talk about their deliciousness! At 6 a.m. there is coffee/tea and fresh baked goodies in the living area. From 7-9 a.m you are treated to a 3 course gourmet breakfast and bottomless coffee or tea. Her lemon ricatta cheese blueberry pancakes, the thickest quiche filled with cheese, bacon and vegetables in an amazing crust, with fresh cantaloupe and arugula AND overnight oats with nuts and fruits and oat milk is just one example of a breakfast we had! Then you MUST be there for Nite, Nite Fatty (Melanie shared how this all came about) serving nightly cakes and on Friday night (and my favorite) home made pies. The line is long, so get there early. read more

I like the place. It is under new ownership (no more Holden and Sue) but Melanie. She was very friendly and gave good suggestions about what to do and where to eat. Breakfast is included- it's a fixed menu BUT dinner is not included- it's $50 if you are staying here and a limited menu that changes daily. This is a change from previous owners. The quality of the food was good. The service was very good. It's BYOB. They will chill your wine for you during the day and serve it with dinner. A very nice touch. There is also a fridge in the downstairs lounge for chilling wine or beer. Communicating prior to arrival was a problem. No one picked up the phone. No one responded to voicemails and emails. This is why I didn't give the Monhegan House five stars. read more

This Inn simply could not be more charming. Excellent service and beautiful furniture and too many nice touches/details to begin listing. Breakfast and dinner are INCLUDED in the price of the room. Dinner was simply stunning. We got a bit carried away with the appetizers, as they are unlimited for guests (remember to pay gratuity separately!) and still managed to appreciate (if not quite finish) the main courses, both of which were excellent. My boyfriend isn't really a fish guy but he was feeling adventurous and ordered the Branzini, which we both loved. Also, it's BYOB, so remember to grab a bottle of wine or whatever you fancy from the nearby general store. We're from DC, where the dinner alone would probably have cost around the same price as the room, which of course INCLUDES dinner and breakfast along with the room. Breakfast wasn't quite as extravagant as dinner - it generally isn't - but very good nonetheless. The lemon poppy seed muffin was outstanding, as was the frittata and coffee and home fries, etc. As there are only a couple restaurants/hotels on the island, you may expect the kitchen to phone it in a bit, but it was actually the opposite. I would have been blown away by the food if I'd eaten it in any city in the world. It was truly a magical, unforgettable weekend. Very nice, competent people working there. Friendly and charming and very knowledgeable about the menu and the island and anything else you'd want to know about. Very friendly, interesting guests as well. Easy to meet people on the huge wrap-around porch, which is a lovely place to converse or have a drink or snack. I should probably point out that wifi is pretty weak throughout the building, but I am reluctant to do so because everything else was so, so perfect. This is my first time to Monhegan and I have to say that I am truly lucky. We stayed at the Monhegan house for a couple of nights. We took the Balmy days II ferry over to the island. The Monhegan House has a truck that meets the boat to bring your bags up to the hotel and drops them outside your room. We stayed in a bigger room, with two queen beds. We even had a small ocean view. The room was so clean and the bedding was crisp and fresh smelling. There are no individual bathrooms but there are many grouped on each floor and several shower/ tub rooms. There is plenty of hot water and the towels are restocked continuously during the day. It is a little pricier than the other inn but the value is better. Not only do you get a fabulous breakfast but a gourmet dinner as well. You choose your dining times and just pop down at your assigned seating times. The restaurant is unable to sell beer or wine so you can bring your own. What a bonus! The meals were fantastic. You can basically order anything that you want. They had up to 6 different entrees. I could go on and on about the food but a quick over view is that it is quality food with every service. My favorite meal was the Korean short ribs that were so unctuous with sage polenta and Brussels sprouts. The beet salad and fried Brussels were delicious as well. We ended the meal with a piece of pumpkin pie with a flavored whipped cream dollop. Even if you aren't staying here, try to have a dinner at the MH while you are visiting Monhegan. You will not be disappointed. I will be back soon. read more

If you have any walking issues this is THE WORST place to stay. The owner spends his time yelling at anyone who uses a golf cart to keep off the grass if you try to enjoy a meal at Novelty. We try to be respectful of the local traffic and stay out of the road, but apparently there is a turf war going on and it is not pleasant to be caught in the middle of it. This has changed my attitude of recommending Monhegan and especially the Monhegan House. Thanks for ruining our vacation. read more

REVIEWING SOLELY FOR DINNER: I came to Monhegan as a guest at the Island Inn but I was told by a friend to make sure I had dinner at the Monhegan House. Boy was I glad I did! I enjoyed my dinner at the Monhegan House and dare I say it was one of the best dishes I've had all year. I had the lobster gnocchi. The gnocchi was cooked to perfection - pillows of deliciousness and there was a good portion of Lobster in the broth with microgreens on top. My mom had the hangar steak and it was cooked to PERFECTION. The inside was soft and the outside just crispy enough, with a wonderful sauce. I figure why not go all out when you're having a special night out! The wait staff was super friendly and it seemed a little more modern in terms of cuisine, compared to the Island Inn's dinner selection. I will definitely come back to the Monhegan House for dinner next time I'm on the island. read more

Memorable dining in one-of-a-kind surroundings. Missus and I spent a few days on Monhegan Island a couple months ago and stayed at Monhegan House, a lovely, clean, huge and atmospheric inn on this stunning little island. Our room came with full breakfast each morning, and we had one of our dinners here. The dining room and kitchen staff created some truly delightful meals. Our two breakfasts here were top shelf -- great coffee, smiling service, great French toast, fresh fruit, eggs and sausage, and a lovely muffin. The dining room bustles, with lots of hungry guests coming downstairs to investigate the aromas. Our dinner was even better. A particular standout was the Wild Mushroom Toast, which we both would eat every day if I could. There are few places to dine on the island, but when it's this good, you won't ever notice. read more

My family of four was delighted by presentation, tastiness, and wonderful service at the Monhegan house for dinner. Our meal started off on a good note with herbed butter accompanied by some excellent homemade bread. Both managed to distinguish themselves when normally they a forgettable part of the meal. We had the lobster gnocchi, which was correctly described by our waitress as a generously sized appetizer, seared scallops topped with grapefruit, duck with risotto, and halibut with clams. Every single dish had unique favors, a great combination of ingredients, and was prepared with a very deft hand by the kitchen. Frankly, I was surprised that they could cook up such a great meal on the island. I just called to book a room and Holden, one of the innkeepers, treated me like dirt over the phone. He assumed I was from out of state (I'm not), he kept dismissing my comments and undermining everything I was saying as if I was the bud of the joke. Not a great way to speak to a potential customer over the phone and definitely led me to cancel booking with them. I booked elsewhere on the island for reference. My advice for Monhegan House? Such an amazing gem! I have only been here for dinner, but if the dinner is any indication of the other accommodates than they must be fantastic as well! My friend and I were visiting and found the Monhegan House after receiving a recommendation from a local and boy did we score! The service was outstanding, seating us right on time and talking through the menu with us patiently. My friend mentioned that she was vegan and our waiter (who was incredible so I really wished I remembered her name) recommended the red and golden beat salad for her meal, I got the duck, and she suggested a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc that is vegan called "The Oyster". This place is awful, and honestly, that's an understatement. I stayed there recently with my husband and we had a terrible experience. When checking in, Susan, one of the owners, assumed my husband and I were in separate rooms because we are a same sex couple. An easy mistake, I politely corrected her and said we were in the same room and she kind of made a face and kept talking. Once we had heard her speech about the hotel, we went up to our room, which was incredibly bare and our door didn't even really even close. There's no art on the walls, the bed had no headboard and was on wheels so it moved around the room throughout our stay. Still being optimistic, we figured it was just rustic and paid the accommodations no mind, until we started seeing all of the patronizing signs. You would not believe how many signs there were telling you what you could and couldn't do throughout your stay. Unfriendly abrasive signs everywhere you looked. It was really off putting as adults who paid a considerable amount of money to stay here to be treated so poorly through this signage at a place where the doors don't even close. To make matters worse, the owners were really friendly to everyone staying in the inn: everyone except us. They would talk to guests on the porch or in the restaurant, but every time my husband, myself, or my friend who was there too tried to engage them in friendly conversation they were very unfriendly and curt. At one point as we were standing on the porch talking to other guests, Susan used her arm to move my friend out of her way so she could hang the menu. No "excuse me" no "pardon me", just a hand moving him so she could pass. We all kind of looked at one another and the older couple we were talking to were kind of shocked as well. The poor behavior continued throughout our stay. Our second night my friend and I were reading in the lobby and when my husband said goodnight to us and made a joke, we laughed quietly. Susan came out of the office and reminded us that there were other guests just on the other side of the wall we were sitting near. It was 9pm, we had not made noise at all before that, and the guests in the game room, across from where we were sitting were making a great deal of noise that went uninterrupted. Once again, we swallowed our frustrations and continued reading. My friend went to bed, leaving me there, and when Holden, the other owner, came out of the office for the night he said "turn off the lights before you go up." No "goodnight" no pleasantries, just a command. I guess you have to be a straight white older couple to get even a little respect at this establishment. We were hoping to have a friendly, relaxing island experience, but what we got was a cold shoulder, bad food, and a bare room. Monhegan is a wonderful place, but I urge you to stay LITERALLY anywhere else. A TENT IN THE WOODS WOULD BEAT THIS PLACE! read more

This review is not for the stay. Didn't stay here. It is for their charge to use their internet. Don't be fooled into paying. The sadistic troll at the front desk has both outlets and internet in the public rooms rigged such that the power comes and goes, internet speeds up and slows down. So that fools like me, who have deadlines to meet, go berserk trying to get work done and can't figure out why the power to the outlets and internet are intermittent. The asshole is creative--every outlet on a separate on/off switch. Has you chasing around the room seeking power. read more

I'd give it negative numbers is I could. I made reservation with this place on 9/1 for a trip on 9/21 to see my son on the island. We were hit with hurricane Florence a few days ago so there is not way I can get there - our city was devastated. So I sent an email to cancel two days ago explaining the situation only to get a reply email that since I didnt give 30 days notice they would not refund me any money. (note only 21 days at best I could have) I replied back that we had devastation every where and basically got a reply too bad - they won't be refunding the money nice people I wouldnt stay here for anything. read more

We dined here 6/21/12. The inn has been undergoing renovations and upgrades. The dining room was a crisp update of traditional Maine turn of the century style and was charming without any kitschy clutter. There was a huge family party at the rear so the hostess was slow to seat us, but once we got settled, service was prompt and excellent. They brought a cooler for our wine and water glasses were attentively filled and refilled as needed. The freshly made warm bread here is absolutely out of this world with a crispy salty crust. To start, I had bagna cauda which consisted of grilled fennel, leeks and radishes. wonderfully delicate and flavorful. Then came a rich crab risotto with asparagus. The asparagus were still slightly crisp and bright green. The flavors complemented each other without drowning each other out. The only slight disappointment was the lemon cake with berry sauce with dessert, which was small, and seemed a little rubbery, though the flavor was still very good. Dining on Monhegan is BYOB so wine is up to you. The value is very good and I think the food here is better than the Island Inn, though they have a better view. read more

I had an unexpected medical emergency come up that meant I wasn't able to make the last ferry out to the island for my overnight trip. I called to see if there was anything that could be done, a reservation change, a future credit, partial refund, anything. Since they're at the end of their season they said there was a single Wednesday that might be available, completely impossible for me with such short notice, and they wouldn't allow anything else, not even a suggestion, just an insincere apology. I had been here once before and hadn't loved it (the reviews about it being stuffy and loud are true, also there were flies everywhere, including my over priced meal, and the smell of the communal bathrooms just outside my room meant I had to have my door permanently closed in the heat) but it was at the time of reservation the only hotel left, but in the future I will be skipping the trip altogether rather than booking here ever again. read more

No locks on rooms! Honestly! Do not bring anything of value you do not want to carry with you at all times! Worst experience I ever had! I Didn't sleep, loud, hot, gross. Food was unbelievably expensive for dinner (and poor quality for 40 bucks a plate)and breakfast was free but inedible. The island was beautiful I highly enjoyed visiting "the island inn" for dinner... but sadly they were booked to stay...they had keys to their rooms, and they also seemed to enjoy cleanliness and a/c! Whereas, The Mohegan house had ill fitting screens in their windows that allowed in bugs and no air...it was 90 degrees all night! They also allowed people to drink and party loudly until very late, (they have a posted 10pm quiet time but no enforcement of it)and it kept a lot of people up! In the morning a group of people besides my family were exhausted and fed up... some left early. I complained to the owner but was completely ignored! I asked about the one locked door, and discovered it was the supply closet! This must have been a wonderful hotel once.... now it is pretty to hike by. If you want to enjoy the island then you need food, sleep and to feel secure...none of which you will achieve here. read more

I've stayed on the Island before and it is truly one of my favorite places on earth. This place is a fine option as a place to rest your head. The facility was clean and relatively well looked after. If you're looking for lodging with cable TV and AC... you probably know already that this isn't Monhegan isn't the place to come... so don't expect it from anywhere here. If you've seen 'Grand Budapest Hotel' you might remember the SHIT LOADS of signs everywhere reminding guests what they are and aren't allowed to do. If that's your thing... come here! Close this door, don't touch this, don't do this...the amount of detail given to the signage here is impressive... honestly no detail is over looked and if you're concerned with not innately knowing what to do in public I'd recommend this place to you. Unless you are a retiree, don't expect any modicum of warmth from the innkeepers. I'm a relatively quiet 30 something and regularly felt like I was an imposition if I happened to bump into either of them. The restaurant is overpriced, not very good, and most of the staff seems pretty unhappy. Breakfast in the morning is pretty unimaginative and wasn't really worthwhile. Try the other historic inn on the island. read more
