This place is super cute, the outdoor area is spacious and beautiful, a great place to enjoy coffee outside. I ordered the iced matcha and a lemon raspberry muffin. Loved the raspberry muffin. I got a vanilla bean matcha and it was good, had a strong matcha taste considering the color but wasn't the biggest fan of the matcha brand they use. You walk in thru the front door and exit thru the side door to keep the shop flow and there's a little cute outdoor patio where you can sit and enjoy your coffee and/or pastry. Precise, well-designed, unfussy, harmonious, felt very Swedish. Wanting to keep that calm Sunday morning feeling yet needing to be alert for an all-day swim meet, we stopped for coffee nearby, almost directly across from Sonoma Valley High School. Småstad Coffee Roasters is a tidy shop with cafe tables inside and a large wood table on the terrace. They welcomed me warmly as soon as I stepped inside. I chose a large cardamom brown sugar latte and 2 small cardamom, lingonberry and black currant cakes ($4) that were dense but moist and surprisingly filling. Were they milk cakes? I should have asked. The latte was lightly sweet with a kiss of cardamom. I recommend this little shop tucked away off the main road. There's a private drive out front. read more

With a new baby I don't get out as far or as much as I used to, but when I do get out, I try to pack in as many stops as possible before meltdown or blowouts. Thankfully on a trip out to Sonoma I was able to stop in at småstad and it was such a good experience! We were able to get front row parking in their semi private lot on a gorgeous fall day, and getting in and out of the cafe with the baby was a breeze. I had a lovely time chatting with the friendly folks behind the counter before we settled on a morning glory muffin, a berry baked cake and a maple espresso tonic. After ordering we sat out on the patio and said man, Sonoma county really is epic in the fall. Basic fall y'all. Love it. The food and drink came out super fast and presentation was pretty. We started with the pastries which were moist and flavorful, and even the baby had some berries to quench her palate. The tonic however was out of this world. The espresso and the maple and the tonic were expertly paired, toasty, sweet, zesty, and man did that drink hit the spot. If this was closer to me, it would be dangerous! Prices were what you'd expect from a craft roaster and cafe, and I don't mind paying a little more for really good. This is really good. Can't wait to come back when I can stay a bit longer, and you better bet I'm getting that espresso tonic! read more

I had the pleasure of visiting this adorable Swedish-inspired cafe in Sonoma, California while I was in town for a Ferrari event at the Sonoma Raceway! We drove by the coffee shop, saw the Swedish flag and had to go in! They had an impressive assortment of fresh Swedish pastries, delicious coffee, a lot of Swedish sma goodis (small candy in Swedish) for sale, cheerful staff, and cozy ambiance. And we got to meet and chat with the owner, Victor, who was very pleasant. I'm so happy we stopped in this gem of a cafe. read more

We stopped at Smastad twice for our morning coffee and pastry while on a quick getaway to Sonoma for our anniversary. Both times we were very pleased with the service, food and coffee. The first day I had the berry coffee cake and chocolate biscotti. Delicious. The second day I had the berry coffee cake again. Both times I had the drip coffee which was bright and fresh. I think they even had heavy cream as opposed to half and half which I love. My husband had an oat milk mocha the first time, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He doesn't love super sweet drinks and this one was perfect. She said they use a dark chocolate syrup for their mochas and a little bit packs a big punch. He also had the blueberry muffin on day two and the cardamom muffin on day one, both of which were delectable. The space was kitschy and not crowded. The vibe was very community friendly. Such a small little gem! The vibe is clean, casual, and welcoming -- you can tell a lot of thought went into creating a cozy space. The service was excellent; the staff is genuinely friendly and felt there was no rush when I was trying to figure out what to order. The coffee was fantastic -- clearly made with care. We also tried a few of their pastries, and they were fresh, flaky, and full of flavor. Småstad is a small coffee shop (as far as I could see and smell, it doesn't seem like they're roasting on site) located a few blocks away from the town square. There's ample parking on the street and in the lot out back and it's a great place to stop when you want to escape the madness that is the Sonoma Plaza on Saturday afternoon, sip on a nice refreshing iced latte, and relax. The espresso-based drinks here are amazing! I don't know what specific coffee or roast they're using but it leans darker/roastier, not burnt like the popular coffee chain, but think notes of dark chocolate, roasted marshmallows, etc - definitely more savory and earthy than fruity and acidic. What I especially enjoy is the consistency of the espresso shots - no matter who is at the helm, they're always pulling excellent shots, which is actually pretty difficult to achieve in practice, so props to the team! There are a few pastries you'll find at other shops, like plain croissants, etc, but there are a lot of Swedish (or at least Swedish-inspired) bakery items, as well as some Swedish candy, which I must assume is some sort of black licorice, which definitely isn't my jam, but could be yours :) Overall, this is a great coffee shop and my go-to anytime we're in town. read more

I live nearby and while I primarily enjoy my tea at home, I occasionally stop by Smästad for a coffee, tea and/or pastry. Delicious seasonal beverages and the pastries are fresh every morning, made onsite. Grateful I can bring my own mug for my drinks. The shop also has great swag for sale if you're a fan of Swedish design, folklore and style. Always makes me happy to see folks enjoying the outside tables, meeting with friends or family or working on a warmer day. Viking pride aside, I was happy to have stopped in out of curiosity. I have begun recently working in Sonoma and popped in here and regularly go back. Simply put, the team is warm and friendly, the coffee is great (I generally only have had drip) and they also offer a wide array of pastries, some usual and some Scandinavian specialities. Last month AFTER a family group out of town visitors sleeping in my rumpus room on the pull out couch, get up and return the room to a nice orderly rumpus room. I was ready for them to vacate my home and get themselves back to the east coast to get everything ready for the Winter Holidays there. I had plans to go shopping in New York City. I dragged my cousin out of the rumpus room and we threw on our clothes and went out for coffee. Pure exhaustion caused every bone in my body to ache in tiredness. I needed peace and quiet and some liquid fuel. I needed liquid gold to inject into my veins. The liquid gold of choice is tar black thick sugary cup of coffee. However, I am a tea snob at times and tea steep from tea leaves that is so caffinated that it causes me to vomit due to its caffeine content so high, in fact higher than light roast coffee. I admit I am a tea snob and a coffee snob. Back to this coffee shop though is my intention after I thoroughly enjoyed its hot coffee with my cousin. We both were extremely into enjoying ourselves. The fresh roasted beans are particularly fresh. Fresh roasted beans make the best pot of coffee. I normally purchase on a pretty regular basis cofff from this coffee shop because of its focus on Swedish decor. I also can attest to the real tasty muffins and some of their other food selections. My words to you all tea snobs unite and all coffee snobs unit. All snobs of coffee and tea are united today and forever. Those who arrive 1st make sure to be very nice to employees so they continue returning to their jobs and making their customers feel valued. I've visited Smastad Coffee Roasters several times since they've opened, a few times when I've needed a spot to study/write papers while waiting for the library to open. Coffee and pastries are delicious and fresh. Staff are very friendly and service is great. Both indoor and outdoor seating is comfortable, and indoor decor is lovely. Possibly the only drawback is the closing time of 1pm, but maybe just a reminder to get there earlier rather than later. read more

We were not welcomed with a "hi, how are you"? There was no acknowledgment of my family. We were only asked "what would you like"? The person did not smile at us and seemed upset for some reason. It was just really really bad vibes in there. When we left they didn't say anything at all. Usually in any coffee shop someone will say "thanks for stopping by, have a nice day". That didn't happen.
