    Thin chocolate

Short version: $75 worth of chocolates for Valentine's Day were hard as rock, and the team and owner did not offer any apology or resolution, insisting that 'of course they're hard because they were ice cold' despite my explanation that they were tried at room temperature. Detail: This was my very first experience with Snelgrove's. I came to the shop on the Thursday before Valentine's Day and was thrilled to see the lovely decorations and loads of options to choose from. The shop is adorable. I even texted photos to my friends immediately upon entering, saying that I'd 'hit the jackpot' in my search for chocolate. I made my selections and ran home to try them with every intention of sharing my delight on my social media accounts before giving the large box of truffles as a hostess gift on the holiday. I purchased 6 chocolates on the side, from the display cases, to have for myself. I only live a few minutes from the shop, so as soon as I got home, I broke open my box and took a bite. My heart sank. The chocolate shell of the amaretto truffle was so thin that you could see the filling from the bottom, and the filling was so hard that my teeth scraped over the roundness of it. Gotta be a fluke, right? I tried a second. The Almond truffle that the salesperson told me would have a smooth almond filling. SAME ISSUE. Hard as rock and super thin chocolate shell. Instant buyer's remorse. Annoyed, I chatted with friends and went off to make dinner. After dinner, it struck me that I'd hoped that the gift box wasnt the same situation... so I opened it up- only to find all the truffles strewn inside the box- no padding, no plastic wrap to keep them fresh - just a jumble of chocolate and paper wrappers. I bit one: hard as rock. Bit another: same. Now I was incredibly disappointed. Friday morning, I returned to the shop and sat for a little while in the parking lot, hoping to go in when the shop was empty, but that was not looking like an option. I went in and quietly explained to one of the teammembers. They called the woman who had helped me. She put a hand on the box, and feeling it cool (from 20degree weather outside) she insisted that when chocolates are cold, they're hard. (Essentially made me feel like she was saying I, a lifelong chocoholic, was eating chocolate wrong.) She repeated this again and again, and I repeated as quietly as I could that i had tried them at home (room temperature). The owner heard her tone and came over and got a bit involved in agreeing that truffles are hard when cold - while she took the box that was my portion and cut one of the truffles open. : / The last straw for me was her announcing loudly, in the busy shop, that 'He's the owner, so what he says goes.' So much for accepting feedback. So much for offering an apology. I stayed quiet from that point on. Better to just receive my refund and be done with the experience. So, here I am sharing my point of view with so much less joy than I was expecting to. Will not be returning, but I do hope that, for the sake of their business, they take a closer look at that box before throwing it away. Let their team each take a bite and discuss honestly. They'd be better for it.

    Hot Chocolate Bombs

My best friend was in charge of helping my expanding family with a gender reveal for our new baby this week. She was able to work with the chocolatiers at Snelgrove's to have these amazing custom gender reveal hot chocolate bombs made for us and they were wonderful! Inside of each hot chocolate bomb was colored marshmallows to let us know the gender of the new baby. It was such a fun way to find out and we were doubly impressed by the flavor of the hot chocolate when the bombs melted into the warmed milk. Delicious! They were able to get this order done in just a few short days, which was fantastic for our admitted impatience; wanting to find out what the new bundle of joy will be! Would absolutely order again.

I pass by it everyday going through the rotary, but for years could never figure out how to get there. One day, after years on wondering, I asked my wife how to get there, and she told me the entrance is behind that gas station on Pleasant Street. Well today, I did it, I successfully found my way inside In search of sugar free chocolates for my crazed diabetic mother-in-law. It's a decent size shop, with some nice displays, and a variety of different candies, but it seems everyone is there for the chocolates. Service was very nice, and willing to accommodate my special request of a custom sugar free gift set. They took the extra time and effort to decorate the two gift sets I bought in Valentines Day red ribbon. It's strictly candy, and much more of a variety of chocolates than Pete's Sweets down the street. P.S. To the old man(must of been Maureen's father)who was blatantly watching me as soon as I walked in. Chill out dude, I didn't rob them or steal anything, but did give them a $50 sale, and a four star Yelp review. Stopped in a second time and the place was in disarray. The carpet was dirty, and needed to be vacuumed. The chocolate cases were all messed up and low on supply. Maureen wasn't in the greatest mood. My wife was less than impressed with the state of the place, selection, and especially the prices.

"Top of the list King of the hill…read moreA number one" (Frank Sinatra) We've been to a ton of Italian bakeries over the years. But I don't think we've ever fallen as head-over-heels in love with one as we did when we set foot into the Russo Pastry Shop. It's one of the most visually stunning bakeries I've ever seen! Walking into the store reminded me of the moment in the Wizard of Oz movie when the images transform from black and white into color. That's because vibrant, bright, gorgeous colors are everywhere inside Russo's. An embarrassment of riches are everywhere in the form of cannolis, cookies, pastries, and cake slices, And if you want some savory treats to accompany your sweet treats, well... no worries because Russo has pizzas, calzones, grinders, frozen pastas, parmigianas, and soups. We picked up a gorgeous slice of White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake, and it was so fantastic it's hard to put into words. We went into their freezer case and picked up two entrees -eggplant parmigiana and chicken parmigiana. They were priced as a $16.99 BOGO deal. We had both last week, and the portions in the containers were easily splitable for the two of us. The chicken parm seemed to have more inside the container than the eggplant did, and we both thought it was better than the eggplant. In essence we ended up with four dinner portions for just $16.99. Do the math-that's a tremendous value. After you do the math, do yourself a favor and take a ride over to Russo's for a fantastic experience.

I all bought two slices of pizza - one was spinach ricotta, and other meatball parm. Both were very generously loaded w toppings. Both were very good, but definitely below New Haven-style. I guess I'm a pizza snob. They were just a bit doughy for my taste. So, 5 stars for the pastry, 3.5 for the slices, overall rounded to 4.25. 4 Yelp stars

"And there's fire on the mountain Lightening in the air…read moreGold in them hills and it's waiting for me there" (Marshall Tucker Band) Fire On the Mountain has one of the most unique menus I've ever encountered. Seriously, where else have you ever seen breakfast quesadillas, catfish and grits, cheesecake cornbread waffles, smoked brisket hash, deep fried pork ribs, catfish, mushroom, and alligator tacos, and a Puerto Rican Rice Bowl all happily living in the same menu's neighborhood? And then, the icing on the cake was our server - a charismatic and uber-friendly gent named Bromwell who lights up the room with his personality. He made my list of the five greatest servers I interacted with this year. The restaurant's location is as unusual as its menu. You'll find it occupying the front space at the Suffield Commons Senior Living Apartments! Yup, as you walk through the restaurant and out their back door, you actually enter a common space for the housing complex. The restaurant itself has two dining rooms with booths, tables, and chairs and a bar with dining room chairs. That eclectic menu is chock full of breakfast, lunch, and dinner choices with Mexican and barbecue flairs. We were there for lunch and ordered two things. The first was an enormous Cheese Quesadilla ($9.35) with pork ($3.12) on a grilled flour tortilla served with sour cream and pico. It was a thing of beauty, cut into five thick wedges loaded with smoked pork. Our second item was a Caesar Salad (Half size for $6.23) with a side of smoked brisket ($9.36). I passed on the croutons and Caesar dressing in lieu of barbecue sauce as my dressing. I gotta tell you, the brisket was GREAT, a big serving of tender and juicy smoked beef cut into four slabs that must have totaled close to a half pound. We loved everything about Fire On the Mountain and agreed that we need to return for a proper breakfast when we are out that way or making a morning airport run. PRO TIP The restrooms are located in the housing complex's common space I described earlier/ Just exit the restaurant by the door in the rear dining room, and you're just about there.
