    Pork Belly Tonkotsu
    Joyce L.

After much anticipation, Sobo Ramen finally opened in Berkeley. I can eat soup noodles of all varities regardles of season so I was happy to see another ramen shop open in Downtown Berkeley. When you walk in, you step into a vast, open concept restaurant where you can fully see into the entire kitchen and feel how everything connects into the space where you dine. The decor is mellow, warm and inviting. It's great for an intimate meal, groups and everything in between. I immediately notice that each table had a tiny sake bottle holding a mouthful of freshly picked wildflowers sitting on top. It spoke to my heart as I love reusing cool bottles just for the same purpose. My bf and I were greeted warmly and walked to our table. We arrived knowing what we wanted so we ordered straight away. My bf ordered the Pork Belly Tonkotsu and I had the Vegan Spicy Miso with tofu done 3 ways. My bf really enjoyed his ramen and said the meat was tender and flavorful, the broth "just right". My vegan ramen was pretty standard overall. I didn't find the broth to be very complex (it was solidly "miso") but I appreciated the texture of the noodles (they were absolutely perfect!) and the 3 types of tofu offered great variety- soft plain tofu, abura tofu (fried bean curd), and stewed bean curd. There were several distinct textures of tofu to savor: soft, crispy & creamy, firm. The owner, Stella, was on the floor as we headed up to pay for our meal. She was so kind to gift me an empty sake bottle after I complimented on the table decor. We learned about the painstaking patience required to open this location in Berekely and how passionate she and her staff are about the food they bring to the community. In their Oakland location, they used to host midnight ramen and community events which really bring people together and connect them with the food they enjoy. This was such a cool visit and we hope to come back again to try their Matcha Coconut Yuzu Ramen!

Even though the weather is hot, there's nothing like a good noodle/ramen meal to end the night! Came in on a Saturday close to closing and the staff was welcoming and attentive. There was some confusion with food we did not order being brought to us, so not sure what was going on. Ordered some soju, chicken thighs, and Mazemen with katsu side (wanted noodles but not the broth). Everything was delicious and more than enough as a serving. Small katsu came out late as I was halfway done with my mazemen.

I've tried the Oakland location years ago and was so excited to visit the downtown Berkeley Sobo Ramen location. The space is huge with plenty of tables throughout. Our waitress was very attentive and kept our waters filled. We got two tempura dishes, the miso ramen, and the mazemen. The pork belly in the miso ramen was a very generous & thick cut that was literally melt-in-your-mouth. I loved all of the pickled vegetables in the mazemen, which gave the dish great color, acidity, and crunch. Hoping they'll make the dipping ramen when summer starts!

Brief Summary: - Really cool interior - Close to Trader Joe's - Food impression: ramen with volume - Medium thickness noodles We entered around early evening, the start time for dinner. There are two doorways, but the one that is open is the one away from the University Ave street. Turning the corner, the staff welcomed us, asked how many there are, and they loosely let us choose the seats because the seats were not filled at the time. We chose the corner seat, where it's half chair and the wall side is a booth. There are many ramen shops that popped up in Berkeley, and I think this one is on the heavier group, where the pork is thicker and it covers half of the ramen bowl surface. When we chose our seats, the staff gave us a good stack of different menus: the general menu, the special seasonal edition menu, and the drinks. For this time, since it was my first visit, I decided to go for the general menu. We chose the spicy mayu and the pork belly tonkotsu. Whether it was because the restaurant just opened or this is the characteristic of the restaurant, but it felt like it took some time for the orders to arrive; I guessing around ten to fifteen minutes of waiting. Luckily, we chatted and time flew enough that we still had topics to talk about before our dishes arrived at the same time. The noodles have medium thickness, which is my favored thickness. I also liked that in this ramen bowl, the pork was sliced thinly, so I can focus on the noodle and soup more. The soup is rich but after the sip it leaves a clean finish. This soup amplified in goodness when I broke the egg in half and the semi-cooked ajitama mixed into the broth. While I love bok choy, chewing the whole bok choy vegetable took some physical tearing of pulling at with the teeth and hand. It would be nice if these were cut into bite sized pieces or split by each leaf.

Great service, very attentive and good menu recommendations. The place was chill and easy to get a table when we came in on a weeknight. We got the first recommended special and it did not disappoint. The portions were generous too!

Delicious ramen! Really love how fresh everything is. We tried the curry broth ramen and also the maya ramen. The noodles are freshly made, the bok choy was crisp and the katsu was really well done. Liked how you just grab all the extra side items as add ons. We got a plate of skewers (took the picture after 2 were eaten), some vegetable tempura, sesame balls, and rice balls and everything was very fresh. The Thai tea is really good too. Great service from all the staff. Has a very cool vibe inside with the murals and comfy chairs. My son loved the cotton candy machine too- what a treat! Totally recommend eating here.

OMG it took forever to get our food even though it wasn't busy. It was just Ramen too... Not sure what was going on but other people seemed to get much faster than us. It wasn't busy and took about 40mins after ordering. Once it arrived it was ok but the pork was very tough (except the strip of fat) and was pretty simple... like some pickled onions, bok choy, some scallion/ garlic stuff.... Even though the description doesn't lead you to think a lot is going on (Slow-simmered pork broth, thick-cut pork belly, scallions), generally isn't there some extra stuff going on or option to add stuff? Bean sprouts, mini corn, bamboo? Even the egg is $2 extra. But that was all that was optional. Was just a bit boring. Host and server were nice. Watching the kitchen staff move in slow motion was a little frustrating when was getting hangry from waiting so long and then it was a bit disappointing as well.

Ah yes, I remember Sobo Ramen from its Oakland Chinatown location, but it's been over a decade since I had a rather disappointing bowl of lobster ramen there (review: https://yelp.to/DDQfIxcv2U). I don't hold grudges (much), so I noticed they opened a second location fairly recently on University at Milvia in Berkeley. Jamie W and I were on our way to catch Laura Benanti at Berkeley Rep. It was a 2PM matinee, so we had about an hour to order and eat. Gratefully it wasn't busy here. I was surprised they set themselves up like Marugame Udon where you order your main dish almost right away at the counter and then pick and choose various readymade sides like tempura and yakitori under heat lamps in a buffet-like setting. I don't really mind the concept, though I tend to worry that tempura wilts pretty quickly once out of the fryer. Luckily this wasn't as much the case here. Jamie kept it simple and stuck with the buffet items: the $2.20 Shrimp Tempura, the $2.20 skewer of Chicken Thigh Yakitori, the $2.20 Sesame Soy Sauce Rice Ball, and the $3.00 Seaweed Salad (Photo 9). He proclaimed his order as pretty good. Even though I was tempted by the unique Matcha Coconut Ramen, I ordered the $16.78 Mazemen, my first time trying brothless ramen...yes, I know I'm late to the game, but I thought I should finally give it a try. I liked the mix of housemade wide chili noodles, ground pork, Szechuan spice, peanuts, pickled vegetables (red onion, cabbage, cucumbers), and a raw egg yolk that brought it all together (Photo 10). I hardly missed the broth. I also went for the $4.60 boat of Veggie Tempura (broccoli floret, onion rings, yam slice) to get different textures (Photo 8). Overall it was a reasonably tasty experience, and we may come back for one of their ramen bowls yet. FOOD - 4 stars...better-than-expected tempura and the mazemen was a nice change AMBIANCE - 4 stars...pretty spacious SERVICE - 3.5 stars...fairly attentive TOTAL - 4 stars...always good to have another noodle option RELATED - Exploring Berkeley? Pleasantly surprised by the carefully balanced bowl of broth less noodles. The delightfully chewy noodles were paired with a spicy mala pork, but mellowed by the pickled vegetables. The egg yolk made it so luxurious! This bowl was the standout for me even though the classic tonkatsu was delicious too. We were spoiled by conversation with Ken and some carefully curated cocktails. Don't sleep on this underrated gem. We will definitely make the long drive to visit again as soon as possible.

Came in here on a random Thursday after work. There was only one server but she was very efficient and very kind. Place was a bit empty but as I was leaving over 8 people were coming in so I just came at an awkward time. Inside is absolutely gorgeous. So much seating for individuals, small groups, duos, and even large groups! I got the Spicy Miso Vegetarian Ramen Noodles with non-vegan noodles. It was absolutely delicious!! The broth was clearly very clean and healthy and it was very comforting. Only thing I think can be improved were the tofu pieces which may need their own marinating process or cooking process to give them more flavor... but i ate them with a spoonful of broth and it tasted great so maybe it's not a problem haha. would totally recommend and will for sure be coming back with more people.

Came on a Saturday. The service was quick. You pop in, look at menu by the door, pick up a try, grab appetizers as you go through the line to pay, pay for the food at cashier, get a seat, and they deliver your ramen to you at the table. The appetizers were cold. The best one we had was the bacon wrapped quail egg. Would've been better if it was fresh or still hot/warm. Got the black garlic ramen and it was ok... Black ramen had Sichuan pepper corns and the broth was not thick, flavorful with garlic if you like that. Noodles were too soft, prefer al dente. There was a bar as well and for 2 beers. Bathrooms and restaurant was clean.

Let's get lunch! We first put in our noodle orders from the menu, then walked through the little stations to check out the extra bites before sitting down in their pretty and spacious seating. They actually have a matcha ramen available, but I already had my matcha fill that day so we stuck with a classic tonkotsu ramen and a saucy flat noodle dish. Both had a nice spice with super filling portions, making this a great stop for a cozy meal in the Berkeley area. Service was pretty fast and very friendly.

Upon walking inside, you're greeted by a familiar line up area with the menu above, where you place your order and choose any of the options of tempura along with your ramen. If you're dining in, the ramen will be brought to your table as it's made to order. Unlike Marugame, you'll have to wait to get your noodles -- but don't let that deter you! The wait time was approximately 10-15min which isn't horrible if you're not on a time crunch / with friends or family! There is plenty of seating as this is a family friendly restaurant, a little more upscale than your average ramen shop though. I liked that they provided a sauce bar -- however, the labels for each sauce were smudging and one of them didn't have a label. Not a huge issue though. Onto the ramen: I can't quite remember what my cousins got, but they all agreed they loved their ramens and would come back! The Katsu was not dry at all, perfectly crispy and juicy. The pork was also juicy and tender, not lacking in flavor. The mazemen is what drew me to want to try Sobo Ramen. It markets to be numbing, spicy, bright acidity from the pickled onions and to have a slick kick of chili. I felt that the flavors were pretty mild compared to those of the soup ramen. I did make sure to mix the sauce until it coated each noodle, but the flavors didn't come through as strong as I had hoped. I wish it was more numbing and that the spice came through, hopefully next time I come by it will be better! Service is fine, you don't really interact with anyone beyond ordering your meal and getting the food at your table, so not much to speak on there. The environment is beautiful and well decorated, restrooms are very interesting -- many toilets and a shared handwashing sink to the far left outside the restrooms.

It may be a bit tricky especially around meal time, but keep circling and you'll find a spot near by enough. This cute little ramen shop has such perfect lighting coming through thanks to thier skylight. We weren't actually hungry so we shared the following: TONKOTSU - $16.50 (Regular) Pork Belly Chashu, Bamboo Shoots, Red Onion, Wood Ear Mushrooms, Green Onion, Ajitama Egg. You get a choice of noodles to pick: 1.) Hakata - Thin Straight 2.) Sapporo - Medium Thick Wavy Figured since it's my first time here, I choose the most basic version of their bowl of ramen. I chose Sapparo and for some reason expected it to be thicker/wider, but regardless it was still good! The presentation of this bowl is just gorgeous, served on a small wooden platter. The red onion is chopped, and the pork Belly is quite tender. Regarding the egg, you get just half. Overall this bowl of ramen is creamy, rich, and the right amount of flavor and salt. But still make sure to drink at least a glass of water! CREAMY CHASHU PORK CROQUETTES - $8.50 I have never seen anything like this so I must give it a try! It actually didn't come out piping hot, so I was able to drive in right away! It was definitely creamy (like ramen) and had pieces of the Chau's pork, encased in a crispy and warm batter that was deep fried. It also comes with a katsu sauce and I really enjoyed it. The staff was friendly and didn't make us feel bad for ordering enough of just one, but man I was so full. Had to walk around downtown Berkeley for awhile.

We entered a few minutes before peak dinner times, so there were seats to choose and sit from. By the time we left, mostly all the seats were filled up, so I would suggest coming in early. I liked the naming for each of the ramen dishes, some I recognized the names from Hawai'i. For this round, we ordered 3 different types of ramen: the Kuni, Broke da Mouth, and the Miso Hungry. These orders also came around the same time. A notable elements I liked about the ramen was that the noodles were chewy and springy, and the broth was smooth and easy to drink. I also didn't have the urge to drink lots of water either, so the seasoning was perfect. The other element was that I got to enjoy the ramen's broth and noodles as the stars of the dish, and the proteins, like the pork were supporting roles. For me, what I enjoy ramen are the broth and noodles, so I'm happy that these are prominent in the dish, rather than me having other chow down a thick slab of pork. This restaurant hit the right marks for what a delicious ramen is for me, so I'll come back, and maybe try their other broths.

It was conveniently located across the street from the venue, and the unassuming outside of the restaurant did not hint at the amount of fun, ambiance, good food, and warm hospitality contained inside. First, there is the name. Not sure if it's some sort of play on words, secret joke, or if it's someone's actual name, but it works, kinda. It's kinda a restaurant, kinda a bar, kinda of a hangout, and kinda fun. The tiny entrance and plain facade reveals a bustling world of delicious food, tasty beverage, and lots of decorative eye candy to keep you looking around the space while you are hanging out with friends, on a date, or just relaxing after a long day. The decorations there are very upbeat, eclectic, fun, and distinctly Japanese pop culture. Posters, banners, flags, lanterns, toys, and trinkets can be found all over the restaurant, and made it fun to keep looking around and discover new novel things to look at. I did feel like I was in an authentic Izakaya somewhere in Shinjuku, Shibuya, or Ebisu in Tokyo. The place had a lot of personality & personal flair in an otherwise, tiny & industrial small warehouse type space. Service was excellent. The host was the cute & personable Mina, who couldn't have been more accommodating, patient, friendly, and engaging. It was very busy, and even though it was our first time there, Mina made us feel welcome into their home and was also very helpful to guide us around their experience. The other staff were less engaging, but still professional, efficient, and polite. Service was quick, attentive, and friendly on all accounts, and they as a team, managed to serve an entire full house of hungry & happy patrons during the entire Saturday night dinner rush. Fun place with a good staff. We opted for Izakaya-type, shared small plates to satisfy our hunger cravings without getting too full and weighed down on big portions of heavy, rich foods. Everything on the long & expansive menu looked great, but we mostly stuck with small appetizers to sample & savor. It was nice that there were plenty of lighter, fresh vegetarian options as neither of us were really in the mood for seafood, fried food, or big heavy entrees. We ordered the Kinda Tofu, Kyuri sliced fresh cucumber salad, and Kinoko butter-grilled mushroom hot platter and washed it down with some green grape Jinro soju. Everything was pretty good! Not overly fried, greasy, salty, or seasoned. Lightly cooked, delicately glazed, with just enough seasoning & oil/sauce to make it taste good, but not end up too complicated or messy. The taste really came through using these minimal cooking & seasoning techniques. The taste of the original vegetables & tofu came through perfectly, and were only complimented by their light hints of adding flavor. Portion sizes were ample for two people, and presentation was appetizing and organized. The bill for 3 apps + 1 bottle of Soju was less than $50, so it was a good value for the fun experience & good food. Wait times during the dinner rush are long, and there isn't really anywhere to sit or stand, so reservations are recommended. You can also enter and go straight to the 10-seat bar if there are openings, but we got a table for two after around a 20-30 minute wait. After that, everything moves pretty quickly, from ordering, getting food & drinks, to wrapping up and getting your check. Perfect system if you're trying to get to a concert, movie, or appointment with a specific start time. I really liked this place, not Kinda, not Sorta, but Definitely, or Absolutely! Kinda Izakaya will always be our destination to eat & hang out next time we come back to Berkeley, it is a true gem of a Japanese Izakaya/light meal fare right in the heart of downtown Berkeley. It's fun, tasty, busy, and friendly. Small & cozy, yet also airy & comfortable.

Pacifica Roll (10/5 stars) - the best thing we ate, perfect creation of flavors that don't overwhelm each other, it's perfectly savory Poke Salad (5/5) - does it tastes like fish? No. But it's a great combination of textures, you have the chewy king oyster mushrooms and soft fried tofu, the crunch of the veggies and the cashew dressing is addicting Da Bao (5/5) - I didn't like the vegan spam alone (I personally like this other brand more) but here they paired it well with veggies and plum wine sauce that makes it work. The vegan spam here is too smokey for my tastes but together it's good. Roasted Garlic Miso Ramen (2/5) - Honestly, it was the only not good thing we had. The broth was neither garlicky or miso-y. It was very mushroomy. It was all one could taste. The spam did not fit with the ramen and was very jarring to taste in the ramen. Yuzu Matcha (5/5) - It's sour but not too sour. Like it wakes you up witout making your face pucker. Absolutely cannot wait to come back!

Aug 9 2025 3:30pm 3.4 stars…read more After a short struggle to find parking, we walked the half a block to find Bansho tucked away in a corner- almost hidden from the street. The front doors are littered with adds and dirt. It looked a bit sketchy on the outside but we went inside anyway. Inside, the restaurant looks very pleasant. It has a comfortable and cozy look for a small 49 seat place. Mood music plays at a quiet level. There are several conversation starters for sure inside the restaurant like.. "What is that shrine with the green bananas on it for?" "Can you decipher the price of beer written on that chalkboard?" My favorite was "What is that treadmill doing in this restaurant?" We were seated and given menus. The waitress left and then came back after four or five minutes. I felt a little rushed to order as if the order taker assumed we had pre-prepped ourselves on their menu. We had to ask for more of a chance to look at the options. The two of us shared a bowl of Ramen, an order of California Rolls, a coke and later on we ordered Takoyaki-deep fried dough with I believe a piece of squid inside. Before the waitress left to give our first order to the chef, she said "Anything else?" I inferred she was suggesting our order was to small. Later I understood she might be warning me that that might be our last chance to order anything. It was hard for us to place that second order of Takoyaki. Once we were given our food, the waitress disappeared and never checked on us. To place another order, I had to keep the kitchen under surveillance, watching for someone to exit so we could jump up, run to the frond desk area and order. The food we did have was tasteful enough and the $41 seems fare. Negatives for Bansho. 1) The phones used by the front desk and in the kitchen are too loud, they ring for too long and destroy the ambience. Someone will one day invent a device that buzzes in your pocket instead of ringing loudly throughout the entire restaurant. Name it something catchy like "Cell Phone". 2) The Men's restroom was too dusty and the toilet seat was "spotty"- if you know what I mean. 3) Having someone check on you while you are eating and saying "Welcome In" when you get there and "Thank You For Your Business" when you leave would go a long way. I did see a sign that they are hiring so they might have been short staffed.

One of my favorite izakayas in the U.S./Canada, especially if you love chicken skewers. Ippuku…read morefeatures LaBelle Rouge heritage breed chickens, which originate from France and are known for their rich flavor, firmer texture, and slower growth compared to conventional broiler chickens. Naturally, we ordered as many chicken skewers as possible, and every single one was fantastic. The hearts were especially impressive--soft and tender, which is rare since most places tend to overcook them. The karaage was also top notch. The biggest surprise was the bonjiri. I had to look it up, and once I realized it was basically the chicken equivalent of rich, fatty oxtail-style meat, I knew I had to try it. Holy hell, it was easily the best chicken skewer I've ever had. I would honestly come back just to order multiple of these. The squid ink rice was incredibly savory and filling, and paired with a few beers, this made for such a great evening out. All in all, Ippuku is a must-visit in Berkeley if you're into izakayas.

The menu had various options and eye-catching beverages! My table ordered 3 versions of the Chu-Hi's. Quite pleasant. I liked my Meyer Lemon Hi, it came with half of a lemon which I freshly squeezed and poured into my drink. I thought that was very fun! The quality of each dish was cooked well. My favorites were the crab croquettes, chicken heart, one of the marinated skewers (I can't recall the name of it), gizzards, and the squid ink fried rice. I'm definitely curious to try the bacon-wrapped mochi at a future visit. The only downfall was that the kitchen was extremely backed up during our visit. It took well over what felt like 20-30 minutes from our 1st order to our 2nd Chef's Choice dish. That negatively impacted our experience, but it happens. I'd like to try Ippuku again and hope there will be less of a delay. Our server was nice & attentive, came around a few times to refill our water.
