Nice, authentic Chinese food in Berkeley. Things are definitely freshly made to order, which makes everything taste quite good.

This place was pretty good! We loved the chow mein. The noodles were nice and chewy and the green beans were great! My soup dumplings were pretty hearty and filling so we had lots to take home. Overall a good spot if you're craving XLB! It's not anything like DTF...but it will suffice!

We were so sad when Dumpling Kitchen closed their location in Berkeley! But we are definitely glad that a tasty spot was able to take their place. My friend and I tried Dumpling Family for the first time today and it was great! The spicy chili wontons were my favorite. The restaurant is pretty relaxed and there were a lot of people here when they opened for dinner! We definitely want to come back :)

The flavor is not enjoyable, even though I like all the vegetables that went into it. That being said, the texture of the rice roll is great - the custard buns have such a gritty filling that it totally eclipses how delicious the bao dough is. The filling flavor and sweetness is good. Idk why they keep sabotaging themselves with these almost-good dishes - they will bring out dishes as they're ready, which meant I was served desserts before savory dishes - you'll need to request a spoon for certain rice roll dishes; the fillings poured out when you tried to eat them

It is a small restaurant with indoor seating and I did notice that there were a lot of DoorDash / to go orders going out. As we were one of the few people dining in, we were seated right away and put in our orders. It only took a few minutes for the food to come out hot and fresh. I decided to try the shrimp wonton soup as it looked very comforting for a chilly day. Starting with the broth, it has a nice, richly seasoned chicken flavor. The noodles here are very long but maintain a chew which is perfect for slurping. The greens were a little on the tough side as my personal preference would be for it to be a bit tender to bite into and eat. The soup have a good quantity of both the shrimp and the wontons. The shrimp was cooked to perfection, while the wontons were soft and packed with flavor. Overall, I would love to come here again and try different items on the menu!

I was worried it might be one of those gimmicky spots with overpriced, low-quality food, but I was totally wrong. Upon entering, you can tell this is the kind of restaurant where people host weddings, birthdays, and special events. They even have private rooms you can book with karaoke! They also showcase their crabs and lobsters in tanks at the front, which looked incredibly large and fresh. Similar to another reviewer's comment, there wasn't a hostess available when we walked in, but someone came by quickly and seated us after only a couple of minutes. We were so happy to be seated right by the window, though honestly, most perimeter seats seem to have a great view. We enjoyed our meal as the sun set, and I'd highly recommend arriving or making a reservation about an hour before sunset to fully enjoy the vibe. They have a massive menu with plenty of traditional Southern-style Chinese dishes and dim sum options, so it took us about 10 minutes to finally decide what to order. I'll start with the mentaiko seafood fried rice, which was something I hadn't tried before, but I love anything mentaiko. The fried rice came out as a generous family-style portion. It wasn't bad, but I do think it could have used more seasoning - like a lot more seasoning. More mentaiko, more seafood, and stronger salty-savory flavors would have done the dish justice. As is, it's probably a good option if you're sharing with a young child. The crab crystal dumplings were a nice step up from traditional har gow, which I enjoyed. The salt and pepper fried tofu was exactly what I was hoping for: crunchy and salty on the outside, light on the inside, and not too filling. The squid and green beans from the specials menu were a bit of a gamble, but they turned out delicious. I'd definitely order that dish again. We also noticed they have a weekly specials menu that changes every day, and we're already planning to come back--specifically on Thursday because that menu looks delicious. Overall, Hong Kong East Ocean exceeded my expectations. The ambience and view were breathtaking, the service was efficient, and the food was delicious. I know some people mentioned the pricing being high, but I actually thought it was very reasonable for what it is. Compared to Chinese restaurants in downtown Berkeley, you're paying about the same, but the food is better and the view is unmatched.

The building itself is so unassuming, you'd never expect a great dim sum place to be here! Came on a Saturday mid-afternoon, and fortunately, did not wait too long for a table. Their siumai and hargow were so plump and juicy! Usually they're tiny at dim sum spots. Everything else was good as well! We even took some home to our families. When I first heard of Great China, I assumed it would be more of a casual neighborhood mom-and-pop…read morespot, but I was definitely wrong. It's actually a popular, higher-end Chinese restaurant in downtown Berkeley, and judging by the number of people waiting to be seated on a weekend only 30 minutes after opening, it clearly does very well. One note: I often see long weekend lines forming even before opening, so I'd definitely recommend making a reservation or arriving early. We came here with one thing in mind: Peking duck. It was prepared beautifully, with the exact nostalgic flavor and crispy skin I was hoping for. I also loved the way they presented the thin pancakes--half-folded and slightly overlapping each other--so you didn't have to worry about peeling each layer apart and accidentally ripping them. The dipping sauce and green onions were provided on the side, though I do wish they included thinly sliced cucumber to complete the experience. My husband also ordered the fish, which turned out soft, delicate, and delicious. It was a nice complement to the duck and rounded out the meal really well. My only real critique of Great China is the pricing. You're definitely paying a premium here, but the food does taste authentic and well-executed. Given the limited competition in the area, I can see why it feels justifiable if you live nearby. That said, it may not be as worth the splurge for people who already have easy access to more traditional, old-school Chinese restaurants.

We waited about 15 minutes after putting our names on the waitlist, and no one greeted or seated us even though the waitress saw us. Another party even had to flag down a waitress, which was surprising since there were only a 3 tables occupied but 2 servers on the floor. We were eventually seated, though. As for the food, the seared bao wasn't fully pan-fried and tasted pretty plain. The wagyu XLB seemed freshly made, but the flavor could definitely be improved. My favorites ended up being the string beans and the sweet and spicy wings, which aren't even their main focus. The wings were crispy on the outside and still juicy inside, definitely the highlight of the meal. The restaurant is located at a nice area but the food needed to be worked on.
