    Kim Chi Pancake (김치전)

Pyeong Chang Tofu has a welcoming environment with plenty of indoor seating. You are greeted right away when you walk in and you can place an order within minutes. As a group of 2, we decided to share the kimchi pancake appetizer that came with kimchi and various banchan. The pancake was delicious, savory, cheesy and a great addition with the dipping sauce. I also appreciated the kimchi that paired nicely together with the pancake. For the main, I ordered the spicy chicken bibimbap. Here, you can adjust your spice tolerance to preference - my tolerance is high but I decided to go for the medium level. The bibimbap came out in a hot and sizzling dish so just be careful if you're sensitive to hot foods! After waiting for it to cool down a bit, I mixed the layers around and was happy to get the crunchy rice at the bottom of the dish. The chicken was a good balance of spicy but not too overpowering. Depending on the preparation, you might be used to having bibimbap with sauce that you mix in, but this variation already has everything combined within the pot. It also comes with a small side of tofu soup, which was piping hot but so worth it as it was spicy and comforting. I really enjoyed all of the bold flavors with each dish and I'm excited to come back again to try something new!

Really amazing service! The food was also really good. Got the bibimbop and it was really good. The ambience is also really nice and relaxing

I was craving some Korean tofu soup and decided to try this place. I had their combination tofu soup which came with beef, squid, clam and shrimp. It also came with a bowl of rice. The flavor was alright but nothing memorable. All I could remember was that when we were there, a party of around 6 people talking extremely loud which made our dining experience miserable and unpleasant. We ended up eating as quickly as possible so we could get out of here.

I came to have an early dinner with a friend last week. I'd only had Korean food a couple of other times (this might signal my enthusiasm for the cuisine) and was so disappointed it was erased from my memory. This one will stick for sure! We had original fried chicken and soy sauce with garlic. I personally liked the original the best - it came out hot and crispy but not so hot it burns your tongue :) The best parts were the pickled daikon and the excellent service! Everyone was so nice and on top of things, the staff noticed how much I loved the daikon and kept bringing more. I went to an upscale KBBQ place last night and after having dined at Pyeong Chang, I was sorely disappointed by the other place! Pyeong Chang takes the cake so far! The daikon here packs strong pickled punch!! F and I ended up playing chopstick wars over them because we both loved them so much! Looking forward to trying all their yummy appetizers!

Unique menu with lots of different options (options like soy milk soba noodles which u don't see too often) Also so many vegetarian / vegan options, and our waiter was well versed on what was veggie friendly which I appreciated. I picked the stone tofu bibimbap (+$1 for the hot stone, but the crispy rice is worth it!) and asked for no egg. They put fried tofu on it along with various veggies, like bean sprouts and carrots. The dish also came with vegan soft tofu soup, and you could choose the spice level. The tea was complimentary and had a great earthy flavor. Banchan was also delicious and vegan except for the kimchi which had fish sauce. We found free parking on University after 6 pm, and made reservations, but not too busy on summer weekdays in the evening since most of the Cal students are gone. Very pretty and clean interior with to-go boxes you could grab yourself, no need to wait for the waiter! Gratuity is automatically added for parties more than 5.

Deeeelicious! We came in around 7pm on a Wednesday night and did not have to wait long before getting seated. It was warm and cozy inside. I ordered the kong guksu because I love all things soy and it did not disappoint! It comes with salt on the side for you to add and adjust to your liking. The broth was nutty, thick and overall delicious. My boyfriend got a seafood tofu soup that came with an egg and crispy rice! The rice was a fun little bonus we weren't expecting! Our server (seemed like the owner perhaps) had great customer service so it was we left with a full belly and smiles on our faces!

This Korean restaurant is a cozy spot that serves delicious kitchen-cooked dishes, no BBQ grills at the table. I like this because I can just sit back, relax, and enjoy the food without any hassle of cooking myself. Plus, it means I won't have to worry about leaving the restaurant smelling smoky and BBQ-y. Parking was fairly easy to find on the street. The food was very good! We tried the original and shoyu chicken wings, and the latter was our favorite. The bulgogi and the soft tofu soup were also really tasty. They have a good selection of bonchons. The only thing that could be improved is the service. It was a bit hard to get the server's attention, and when they did come over, they seemed a bit hostile. It was a bit off-putting, but overall, it was still a good dining experience.

Definitely would come back again! The tofu stew here is top notch--the flavor profile here is strong, unlike some places. The ban chan here is also my all time favorite, everything was super fresh and refreshing. You could tell the ban chan wasn't just sitting out in the open waiting to be served. What's also unique is that this place also serves the leftover crispy rice w/ hot water that comes in the clay pot! I've only ever been to one other place that does this--I love it when they do this. The only down side is we did notice the stew to be a little too salty so I had to pour some water, but bc the flavor was so good I didn't really mind tbh. Seating was plentiful here. Everything was clean. The ambiance felt like a clean and modern home-y Korean spot. Overall would definitely come back again!

    The daikon was especially delicious!

I was violently craving seolleongtang and did some research to find a spot in Oakland. The menu is pretty big with a lot of enticing options--I love bossam and blood sausage--but because I had tunnel vision, I stuck with the soup. The broth itself was good, and they had salt and pepper on the table so you could season it to your liking. Unfortunately, the noodles were way too soft and almost mushy, and the meat was extremely tough and hard to chew. I couldn't finish it. If seolleongtang is one of your favorite dishes, I'd probably skip it here. My husband got the kimchi fried rice, which was huge and great for sharing between 2-4 people. Based on the portion size, I do think it could use an extra egg, more Spam and some nori on top. It leaned more oily and buttery than other versions I've had, but it was still good--just nothing too special. The vibe and service were solid, so I'd come back to try other dishes and update my rating accordingly.

The hostess was welcoming, and the staff who brought out our food were friendly. Unfortunately, our server provided a very different experience. When we asked for appetizer recommendations, he simply repeated the menu items without offering any suggestions. Throughout the meal, he never checked on our table, even though we noticed him checking on the surrounding tables several times. At one point, the patio umbrella unexpectedly fell near our table. Instead of first asking if everyone was okay, his only response was, "Do you mind if I close the umbrella?" That was disappointing and made us feel overlooked. The only time his attitude became noticeably friendlier was when he brought the check. We happened to be the only Asian table that afternoon. While I can't say for certain why our experience felt different, the contrast in service left us feeling unwelcome. I hope every customer receives the same level of care and attention.

The sauce it was paired with was the wow factor and we even asked for more. The bulgogi on both the bulgogi bowl and bulgogi scramble was tender and had a tasty marinade. I would had wished the bulgogi scramble didn't have as much red onion. I was surprised with the sweet potato tots option and that didn't disappoint. The spicy pork sandwich was elevated and balanced out with the kimchi slaw and cucumber combo. We finished with the Crunch French toast and it was perfection! Fluffy inside but a crunchy outside. I would come back to try their other options for brunch and dinner.

The black bean sauce is both salty, savory with a hint of sweetness coming through. The texture is thick and perfect which hugs the noodles with every bite. It also has a good balance of the veggies in the sauce as well. It is definitely very filling! The spicy rice cakes were soaked in a sweet and spicy sauce, with sautéed cabbage and peas. The flavors were really addicting and kept me coming back for more. The rice cakes were both delicate and chewy. Eating this dish alongside the pickled radish and onion cut through the richness of the dish. Lastly, I tried the yuja ade and was pleasantly surprised! This was my experience with pretty much every dish I ordered on a recent trip to Yu Yu Za Zang. I'll admit this is one of those places I've walked or driven past for years and have always meant to try but just never got around to it. But I finally had an opportunity to drag my cousin/regular dining buddy with me. We ordered Yang Jang Pi (also known as Double Skin in some places), regular jajang (spelled zazang here) myun, and tang sue yuk (beef - which is the traditional Korean meat for this dish). My cousin and I are huuuuuge fans of the Double Skin at Great China in Berkeley, so the Double Skin here had a pretty high bar to reach. We were pleasantly surprised to find it more than held its own. The portions of everything were very generous, and the mustard dressing was nice and spicy. Perhaps the veggies were not quite as crunchy as Great China's, so not as much of a variety of textures, but this Yang Jang Pi was still delicious, and I still think about it days after our visit. The jajang (zazang) myun was also very generously portioned and pretty tasty. I haven't had any in Oakland in a while, so hard to say how it compares, but I would definitely eat it again. The beef tang sue yuk was incredible. Again, large portion, perfectly crispy outside, tender beef inside, and one of the best sweet and sour sauces I've ever had with this dish. The vibe is simple and clean; nothing fancy, but I went for the food, so I was fine with that. The service was also friendly and fast. There were barely any people there on a Saturday evening, which made me sad, because the food really is good. I can't wait to try the rest of their menu. They also have soju and beer. Although Hanshin Pocha next door is popular, I could see Yu Yu Za Zang being a decent spot for delicious, very reasonably priced food that one can share with friends while having a couple of rounds of drinks. And in this economy, aren't we all looking for a good deal?
