My 2 year old son has been attending the Toddler (parent & me) class for the past year and I cannot say enough great things about this gymnastics center. First of all, the coach and owner Mrs. Angela, is a phenomenal teacher and truly cares for her students. She knows all the kids' names, she always has a ton of positive energy that is perfect for kids, and she knows just what to say to motivate and talk to young kids to keep them engaged. She is amazing and my son talks about her throughout the week because he is always so excited to see her on Wednesdays. I like that the class is structured, yet flexible enough to accommodate individual differences in children's energy levels and ability to sit and attend. There is no judgement for children who have more energy, who might not be listening as well as others, or who might be having an off day. They do a really good job with meeting kids where they're at and then appropriately challenging them. One of the reasons I enrolled my son in this class was to learn coordination and body awareness, which he has definitely done, but I also love that they teach gymnastics skills in the Toddler class (like real gymnastics moves that you would think only the older kids can do). At first my son couldn't do any of them, but as he watched Mrs. Angela and practiced them, he quickly caught on and was doing moves that I had no idea he could do at 2 years old! A lot of the moves they practice are also the building blocks for higher level gymnastic moves (hand stands, cartwheels, bar and floor work) and it's amazing to watch him progress towards being able to do these moves. He is not only becoming more coordinated and learning what his body can do, he is learning some impressive gymnastics skills! They do a great job of teaching to kids who are at different levels since kids can practice doing as much of the move as they can and as they get better, they are getting closer to the full move. The best part about this class is it's fun. I get excited for our gymnastics day and so does my son. It makes me so happy to see him having a good time and being proud of himself for mastering challenging skills. They have a big trampoline, bars, rings, spring boards, balance beam, a toddler area, foam pieces to climb over or go under, ladders to climb, mats to somersault on, and fun songs the kids get to dance and sing to while working their body. The class has a lot of repetition to help kids learn and master moves, however each class is different than the last to keep kids from getting bored. SoCal is amazing and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a positive gymnastics experience. We love Mrs. Angela but I have head that the other teachers are great too! read more

We tried 2 other gyms before deciding this was where we wanted to be. Whitney has been a positive and enthusiastic coach for my toddler. She is attentive to all the kids in the class and makes sure each one is doing the exercises correctly and safely. At other gyms, it was obvious some of their staff just didn't want to be there. The location is great, because it's near stores and restaurants if I'm running errands. My daughter is thriving and always excited for class. I haven't written any negative reviews of other gyms since I figured parents would do their own due diligence. I would highly suggest looking into the gyms yourself, because our experience was much different at the gyms we toured. read more

Very well organized facility. My girls take a weekly afternoon class and we've been attending for about 4 months. The kids do stretching for the first 15 minutes as part of a large group and then they break into small groups of 6-8 kids. The small groups are taught by mostly college-age young women (and a guy teaches the boys class) and it appears that there are a set of instructors who work during the school year and others who just work during the summer. So there is a good degree of consistency. As newbies, my girls have been learning a number of new skills- they tend to rotate between 2-3 stations per hour session. Stations might include practice on the long trampoline, using low balance beams, using cushion forms to practice backtuck, using the uneven bars, or cushioned blocks. There is a waiting area for parents where they can watch their kids during each session. And it includes wi-fi! This is a family-run business, so there is definitely a personal touch. I find Gary the owner to be very direct and to the point, and he seems to try to accommodate students as possible. If you're not sure about committing to a whole month of classes, you can try it out with a free class. read more

The gmnastics space is great for the kiddos! No complaints there! My #1 gripe is the comfort level for the parents wishing to watch their kids in the viewing room. The super awkward spaces for the chairs to sit in within taped off spaces!? I get the 6' rule for the sake of the pandemic, but it's a little overkill! Especially on days where it's 91° outside. And there's zero ventilation in that room and plenty of space to only stand. Please be more mindful of the parents who want to watch their kiddos. Only TWO parents at a time can currently look out of the glass. It's inconsiderate. read more

So Cal Gymnastics is an outstanding gym. I can't speak highly enough about the love Angela and all the coaches show for the team girls and the firm but fun and kind manner in which they coach. The coaches are extremely careful with safety and although Angela has very high standards for the girls and really gets them geared up for competition, she still treats each one as a whole child...their feelings and personal goal matter to her. We are around the gym a lot because being on the team requires lots of hours. So countless times I've seen Angela pour as much attention on a three year old class as she does the team girls. I've also seen Angela and Gary (the two owners) bend over backwards to provide extra fun events at a sacrifice to their own personal time. In particular, I feel obliged to mention that Gary has been nothing but kind, friendly, welcoming, and humble at the front of the house, and Angela has been the same coaching on the floor. Gymnastics at So Cal has changed my shy daughter's life and I really credit this particular gym and ALL its staff for that change and growth! With the team, she's enjoyed a sleepover at the gym, a trip to Bella Karolyi's camp in Houston (chaperoned by Angela), the camaraderie of secret buddies before each meet, and other fun activities that SoCal does to make gymnastics fun. She's also enviably strong because of the rigorous conditioning Angela requires of the team girls. My daughter, though not ever heading to the Olympics, earned a few first place all arounds at some meets, which I believe was partly due to her own dedication, but largely due to the excellent coaching she received. And when she "lost" her back handspring as a brand new level four (very common), she was treated with nothing but kindness and encouragement. This might be a good spot for older kids but not beginners. No curriculum for my 3 kids, every time we came there was a new instructor. Never the same person. The owner knows how to explain things to the kids but no one else does. Probably a good idea to put some money back into the business too, or at the very least clean the place once a quarter or something. My kids enjoy gymnastics and as paying customers we weren't given the opportunity for them to learn and advance in this sport. My daughter attended weekly recreational classes at SoCal from kindergarten through fourth grade. She continued to move through the levels until she was invited to join the SoCal team mid way through fourth grade. She loves it! Angela Pires (owner) is the heart of the gym and makes this gym such a special place to train. She and the rest of the coaching staff have high expectations and care about the girls both personally and professionally. The team spends 17+ hours a week in the gym training, so my daughter's teammates have become her closest friends in and out of the gym. I'm not sure how anyone could ever give this place a bad review. My daughter has gone to their (Gary & Angela's) gym for SEVEN years!! Never did I have a bad experience. We stopped going a couple of times through out those years and the integrity of this business wowwed me!! They reminded me of my missed classes and reminded me to do make ups or the open gym classes. They didn't have to do that, but THEY DID!! My daughter now has joined the team and has the best group of friends that you can imagine. These coaches teach the girls to work hard and perform but the girls also support eachother. They do buddy gifts before meets...they had a big sleepover (all the teams) and they go on a Holiday outing each year. This was our second go at this gym, and I guess I forgot why we quit last time. This could just be personal preference, but my son had been taking for almost a year, and they hadn't even worked on backbends yet. I get that floorwork isn't the end all for gymnastics, but when I took as a kid, I was doing back-walk-overs way before the year mark. I said something a few times, and it went over their heads. I never write reviews but after my experience today I felt that I had to. My son is 4 and has been diagnosed with Autism. He has his ups and downs and today's was one of those days he really struggled. His couch Anthony was so kind and patient with him. After my son had been melting down the owner came out and convinced my son to come inside and tried giving him a stuffed lion. To say the least it was above and beyond. None of them had to do what they did and I had so touched. Not only that but the couches are all amazing so is the facility and the owners. I have had the pleasure of meeting Gary and Angela, as well as there kids at the center. I've been there long enough to know that MOST of the clients are awesome and LOVE the place. However, being in the service industry as long as I have, I also know that you can't please everyone all of the time. Having a gym full of kids can be demanding - trying having a few sleep overs with more than 4 people.... So far, we've experienced highest level of service and professional care from this couple. I usually sit in the lobby the entire class waiting for my daughter. I get to SEE what goes on their several times per week and how some of the parents can be RUDE themselves. The owners are accommodating, friendly, kind and the kids love them! Both my toddler and tween have been members at the gym. We loved the preschool program (2.5 hours) - great way to introduce little ones to the idea of school and still include lots of tumbling/play, etc. My learn-n-gym daughter responded well to all the instructors - lots of hugs and love! My tween has participated in various gymnastics classes and has learned a lot and has gained confidence in her ability. My tween loved her coach enough to think of her as a second mom. I came to Yelp to read reviews of this gym after bringing my two children here for a free trial and having a poor experience. I'm just going to outline it here for you: I called to schedule both my kids in classes, I left a voicemail and received a phone call from Gary a few hours later. He asked if I wanted to come in the next day, but we set up both my kids for a trial the following week. When I asked him about the schedule he said that there were two classes going at the same time. One for my 3 yo and one for my 5 yo. Well the next day came and I received a voicemail from Angela saying we missed our trial. I called back to reschedule thinking they must have set me up wrong accidentally and no big deal. I left them a voicemail explaining that we couldn't make it because of a prior commitment and had planned on coming the next week.. as we had discussed initially. Well, Gary proceeded to call me back and leave me a rude voicemail about how I had caused them to lose business on account of MY mistake. EXCUSE ME??? When I returned his call (finally he picked up.. I'm pretty sure it is just the two of them running this business) I confronted him about accusing me of missing our trial and he started to back-track saying that I needed to give 24 hours notice if I was going to miss a class. Rude. I didn't schedule it for that day in the first place. Well, when the day arrived I was skeptical, but my daughter was so excited I thought we would give it a try. I wish we hadn't gone at all. We ended up being a few min late due to traffic (I had to drive 40 min to get there, what a waste of time.).. there was no one at the front desk to greet us.. so we walked into the class. there was no clear path to get to the class.. I felt like this gym was laid out so poorly with mats and crap everywhere When she finally noticed that we were there she asked if I had two kids or just one. Apparently they only had my daughter on the schedule... what the heck?? She added my son on the list and I filled out their waivers. Let me just preface this by saying that my kids are both really high energy & my son is high needs. He needs structure to succeed. This class was a nightmare. Not only was there just a single class with mixed ages.. (umm wait.. he said there were two?) but the direction was all over the place. She clearly had an outline, but the kids didn't seem to understand it, nor did the parents. She went through the circuit once and then focused on only one obstacle through the remainder of the circuit, allowing the kids to run around and do whatever they wanted, not teaching or attending them.. I think to make it more fun? but it seemed unsafe to me.. There was no control over the class. Plus there was so much stuff everywhere I hardly had a hope of keeping my son in check. I will never return to this gym and I will never recommend it to anyone else (actually.. On the contrary..) The owners are rude & condescending and the preschool age class was an absolute joke. I can't believe this gym has 4 stars on Yelp, even with all the negative reviews backing mine up. read more

We love this place! My daughter has been going to SoCal for almost a year and my son started as soon as they added a parkour class. The parkour class is awesome and both kids love to go to class. They get a great workout and are always moving for the entire hour. I am surprised to see some negative comments about the owners. Amazing! We absolutely love Socal Gymnastics. All the coaches are super knowledgeable and great with kids. My daughter has been attending since she was 3.5 years old (7 now). So we have experienced multiple classes and multiple coaches. No disappointments yet! I have to single out Angela because she's my daughter's favorite and rightfully so. We have been extremely happy with So Cal Gymanstics. In fact, we moved our daughter from the YMCA center because it is a mass of kids with little connection to the individual! In our year in a half at the gym, we have been impressed with the fact that the coaches tailor their teaching to the child's personality, strengths and needs. My daughter's love of gymnastics was reinstated after switching to So Cal and she has improved greatly because of the balanced mix of structure, expectations and caring attention that are given towards her. After my previous interaction with Gary, his wife called me to apologize and tell me how bad he felt for the way he acted. She told me that she always comes down hard on him when he behaves like this...I guess it happens often? I thought this was a very decent thing for her to do, and it ALMOST changed my opinion of the way they run their business. Until I received the next phone call...AFTER she read my review on Yelp. This time, she got angry, and told me I pushed her husband too far and it was my fault he snapped. The review had apparently pushed her over the edge. At this point, I am SO HAPPY that I saw their true colors before my kids got totally hooked on that gym! We definitely will not be going back there. My daughters have been going to So Cal Gymnastics for almost 5 years and I cannot say enough about Angela & Gary. I was very upset to see a bad review. The Pires' have put their heart & soul into this gym, and have put in thankless hour over and above regular business hours. Their first priority has always been about the kids, their safety and well being. They are always focused on how to make a better experience for each child that comes through their doors. I now have two competitive gymnasts, one who started on Angela's very first competitive team, I have watch these girls blossom through hard work and perseverance under her coaching. I have witnessed this team (who no one had ever heard of) compete in their very first meet and then one year later at this same meet, go on to win the Team All Around! The other thing I have to point out is that there have been several team girls who have left So Cal for various "unhappy" reasons only to return and realize that the grass isn't greener on the other side and that So Cal really is a unique and great experience. Whether you are looking to start your child in a class for fun or for dreams of an Olympic hopeful, I would highly recommend So Cal Gymnastics Training Center. read more

Not impressed. After noticing my child was much more skilled than the rest of class, for 6 months I kept asking when she would move up. I was put off 3 times before the owner finally said he would have her evaluated. After the eval., I was told she needed to be moved up 2 levels and is "extremely talented and would not stay in the next level for long at all". There were no accommodations offered for the money I wasted having her in a class that was much too easy for her. After a year, she is still in the same level and is bored out of her mind. Needless to say, as much as I wanted to make this work (this gym is very close to our home), it is time to move on. I was really hoping the coaches would be more attentive especially after our first experience but I think the classes are just too big and the coaches are seemingly always changing. Worse experience ever, we stuck it out for over a year. Gym equipment is run down and parent waiting area is a disaster. Classes are crowded with poor athlete to coach ratio. Our coach seemed bored all the time, and not interested in teaching the girls. The gym is overcrowded to the point of classes have to stand around waiting for a station to open for their rotation. We never received any evaluation of our daughters skills or progression. A major disappointment to say the least. We will be taking our gymnastic endeavors elsewhere and I suggest you do the same. read more

So Cal has been an amazing gym since the day my daughter started there 4 years ago. These coaches truly care for each of these gymnasts and encourage them to become thier very best. We started out at another large gym in Encinitas gym, but I really felt like it was a "cattle call"....way too many girls/levels/activities going on at the same time. There was more standing in line waiting than anything. At So cal groups are small and individual attention is given to each girl every day! My daughter has blossomed as a gymnast and loves her gym. This was her first year competing and she came home from each event with many medals that represent not only her hard work but a wonderful gym that has amazing coaches and owners. My daughter has been going to SoCal for over 6 years, and has LOVED it! She has participated in both the recreational and competitive sides of the gym. Angela (one of the owners of the gym) has made safety her priority, with fun and feelings of accomplishment a close second. When my daughter was participating in the recreational classes the gym floor looked busy to me, but each coach has a lesson plan and knew exactly how to rotate the kids through the gym. On the competitive side of the gym, each coach knows how far to push these girls to achieve their best (while keeping their physical and emotional well-being a priority). Angela consistently supports my daughter during her training, and is available to me to discuss anything! My daughter feels empowered and encouraged by Angela. Gary (another owner of the gym) has always shown me respect any time I have had to discuss billing, or changes to scheduling. I have complete faith and trust in how he handles the administration part of the gym. This is a fantastic family owned business, where they go above and beyond (often times putting the gym first) for everyone! read more

The coaches do a fantastic job preparing the gymnasts for competition. There is a lot of talent at our gym which serves to help everyone improve and reach their potential. The only negative I see is that some athletes are allowed to display less than ideal sportsmanship qualities while competing. This gym is a joke. I had gone to watch my niece (who no longer attends thank goodness) several times and not one experience was good. It was overcrowded, extremely understaffed (I only ever saw 2 coaches to like 40 kids!!) and overall it seemed completely unorganized. Now looking at the other reviews I know I was not alone in this assessment. I am unsure how they have been around for as long as they have with their unprofessional management of this gym. The gym was always hot, either no AC or they didn't want to pay to turn it on and I could not find a water fountain for the life of me. As a birthday present I offered to pay for my nieces apparel (ridiculously over priced for a track suit with this gym's name all over it) and to this day never received. I told my sister to cut her losses and take my niece to another gym and do better research on the coaches/staff, and equipment this time. If you care about your child's wellbeing stay away from this gym. read more

Socal gymnastics was the best decision I made for my middle daughter! I can't believe how well she has done at Socal gymnastics in just the 5 months she has been on their team. She is not even the same kid! She loves to go to practice and gets better every single day. I owe that to Angel the owner and the other team coaches. They are amazing in every aspect, from coaching to teaching a hard work ethic. I as a mom was a competitive team gymnast for 13 years in the Midwest. My best friends and the best memories of my life were spent in the gym. I feel I have found that for my middle daughter. I am grateful for Socal gymnastics. I have multiple competitive athlete kids and I am always so grateful to find such amazing athletic teams to have my kids be apart of.
