Was in the area to meet some friends and saw this place pop up on maps so I decided to give it a shot. Guy behind the counter is busy helping someone else, no big deal ill look at the displayed cards. Overhear him getting priced out for a list he had. Guy behind the counter is quoting tcgplayer and the prices sound a bit high so i slyly check the cards the customer is saying on tcg player myself. Every single card is being priced $1-$5 over. Down to the cent. That card thats listed for $12.67? I hear: "That one is listed for $16.67, but I'll call it $16"... The person that was buying I think caught on quick because he even started questioning it and the employee or owner just change attitude so fast I just couldn't stand and watch so I just called it a wash and left. How can you be so rude to a customer, let alone a regular(they kept using each others name so I have to assume this isn't the kids first time there). I was there for no more than 5 minutes and felt I learned everything I need to know about the place. read more

Not to belittle other shops, but this one isn't corporate feeling or doesn't make Magic players feel like their game is less important than other games. The owners are a riot! I pretty much only still go because my friends keep asking me to join them. At this point, I've started rejecting their offers. Paul (store owner?) talks down to or yells people all the time. Last week he yelled at me for not ending the game I was a turn away from winning because somebody was honking in the parking lot 10 minutes before closing. It isn't the first time he's yelled at me for something that wasn't my fault, and I'm not the only person he's done it to either. They won't try to help you get cards. If they're out, Penny will at least say sorry about it. Paul just tells you to go somewhere else and acts like you're the problem for inconveniencing him while he's working. If you ask for card recommendations, he will only help if you go through Penny first. I once bought a card I was interested in . He sold it to me and watched me put it in my commander deck. Only when I played the card against him did he tell me it wasn't legal in commander. I tried to return the card and they offered me store credit in an amount that was lesser than I paid. When I asked him why he didn't say anything about it, he told me it was my fault for not doing my research and laughed about it. Another time someone was throwing away all of their commons so I asked to look through it to pull the lands. Paul jumped up and claimed them "because once they are on the counter, they belong to the store." He snatched the pile oit of my hands and threw a literal tantrum in front of a room of about 20 people. Found out after that they are begging players to give them bulk cards so they can sell them back to people. I'm going to Card Addiction or any other store from now on. Paul has run me off for good. The community doesn't have to take this kind of abuse. read more

these people were SO nice and generous! we are from out of town and they gave us and our daughter a few free packs! there are two adorable shop puppers that came out for pets and gave some kisses. they are cash only, but the donut shop next door has an ATM. this store reminded us what magic is all about. that kindness made a real impression on us, and we will recommend others to stop by if they are in the market for some mtg! read more

I've been going to SoCal Magic for years now and they have always been the perfect small shop. All the negative reviews are a result of people who want them to function like a big store tournament style shop and while I believe they do that as well as they can, they also make room for as many players as want to play. Came here looking for cars sleeves for my Magic cards and they had more then I expected! They have ttrpg and dnd dice sets right when you walk in and I ended up leaving with 5 sets. They had a ton of new designs that I had not seen at any other places we went to. They had small, regular, large, and glow in the dark dice. When we went in there was 2 large games playing and everyone was very nice! They had a great selection of Magic cards, packs, and sleeves. This seems like a great place to play and get all your Magic and dungeons and dragons gear here. Also, I just have to mention that the center that you have to park around back to get to. It also has a whimsical table outside of the shop perfect for lunch or just chilling during a break. Check this place out! read more

I have been here a couple of times to buy singles and booster boxes. The last time, they had a small selection (through no fault of their own, supply has been rough) but they asked if I wanted to preorder. I ended up getting a box they had in stock, but I was glad about the speed and enthusiasm they offered to preorder. Most stores, the guy running the front would just look at you with that dead-fish expression, giving you that impression, "you done?" Not here, and I was glad they were willing to accommodate me. This shop is pretty cool to go look around. They keep a lot of product in stock that you can't find anywhere, such as old duel decks, old commander decks, old pre-release kits, tons of playmats, and more. I pre-ordered a few items (limit 1 on most) that I couldn't get pre-orders for at other place. Downside is every transaction is cash only, upside is all prices have tax included already. I found that about 90% of their singles to by overpriced. $2 for cards I can get for $0.17 on TCGPLAYER dot com. $20 for $12 cards such as fetches and stuff. I can easily have most cards shipped to me much cheaper than buying them here. The battlebond tournament I went to was very fun with great collection of players, however they passed out packs at 1:45pm when it was scheduled to start at 1pm.... 45 minutes of waiting around doing nothing after I just waited 25 minutes because I was early. This is unacceptable and should never happen. I can understand 10 minutes late or 15 minutes late but 45 minutes... Seriously? But I had a great time and met a bunch of fun people so that is a plus. Anyways, it's a pretty cool shop to play Saturday magic at but I have other spots I like better. I will still come here once in a while to see how things are. I always recommend that people visit other shops to see what environment they like best. Find what suits you! read more

Small little shop, definitely smaller than other local game shops in the area. However looks often deceive, wonderful and welcoming community, fair prices. Just be wary of their cash-only policy. My only complaints would be their store hours. They definitely don't stay as late as other stores. read more

The owner here constantly quotes higher than average prices. Even if you see a single with the price marked, the owner will look it up again and adjust the price from there. What is the point of marking the prices on the cards in the first place if you're just going to look it up? He's also really slimy when he can tell you really want/need a card. I once asked for one of my commanders in foil. I had already looked up the card on the site he uses for pricing beforehand (findmtg). He ended up quoting me 50% higher than the HIGHEST price on findmtg. I'd already been in his shop at least 5 times before, always for foils. He basically was trying to take advantage of the fact that it was my general I was looking for, and he knew I'd pay his ridiculous markup for it. Also, since he doesn't have a great system for buying cards / giving you trade credit, his legacy / edh stock is always shrinking / dwindling. He's been selling from the massive collection he acquired over the years, and his stock for these singles is only shrinking- there is no turnover. long story short - if you're desperate or nearby already, it's worth a pop-in. Otherwise, avoid this establishment if you don't like overpaying for your MTG singles. read more

Paul is a great guy and he's passionate about the game. I go to him for ideas and he gives me options. I recently had him pull a lot of slivers for my commander deck (more than I needed so I can pick and choose and adjust, etc). He took the time to gather the cards, organize them, price them, systematize, and personally walk me through the stack. Great customer service, knowledgeable, fair, and patient. Sometimes he will get pretty comfortable throwing some cards in the "buying box" but I get it - businesses need to make money! Obviously you don't have to buy every card he recommends, it's more like a "consideration". The place can be a little tight sometimes as far as space goes, but I think if you request the vacant room next door he will set you up. Never had an issue with this store, his lady partner is very nice and helpful and her dogs are quite precious! read more

I would like to start this off simply. I quit magic a while ago and just got back in. I don't look like a typical magic player because I look more like a jock. For that reason I never really feel comfortable going into a shop because most judge me thinking "what the heck is a guy like you doing playing my game". Anyways I completely get treated like this here. Or at least did. Here is the interesting part. I knew this guy Paul before he owned the shop back in the days when it was Dear Mr Fantazy that got broken in to and forced to shut down. So this guy decides to open his own shop. No business skills. No people skills and in debt for the first year or two who knows now. Takes cash only to avoid taxes and make it so he can charge mediocre prices and make a higher profit. IE since he doesn't charge tax he uses his "pricing system" and adds a little bit. His girlfriend was annoying and has no Social skills. Doesn't even say hello When answering the phone. and I can't believe he is still open. Me and a few friends used to be regulars at dear mr Fantazy and went to support him there. I was hoping when we all left him the cut of $1000s spent there would shut him down. Sadly not yet. Anyways, I hope a few will stay away. There are far better shops out there. And he charges ridiculous prices for tournaments with mediocre prize support. $12 drafts. Really. It's $10 with a pack per person every where else. Why do you think you are worth $2 more. And yes. His shop is small because he would be to cheap to invest money and actually come up with a business plan. It's more like hey. Let's open a shop and hope it works. I wish there was a way to give six stars! I had found Magic the Gathering cards in a house clean up previously owned by a family member and had no idea what they were or the value. I went to one place who offered me 20 dollars for the collection and then went for a second opinion with SoCAL Magic and they offered me over 200! The staff where so friendly and did not take advantage of my lack of knowledge. They even gave me a tour of the facilities while I waited for the cards to be valued. If you have cards to sell or trade of any kind I would HIGHLY recommend going here. There is no other place you should go. read more

I would give 3.5 stars, but yelp won't let me; C'est la vie. The selection is pretty darn good here as they have binders from 4th all the way to standard. The only reason for 3 stars are the prices. I'd understand if they charged retail of cards (medium price from TCGplayer or any one of a number of pricing websites), but they usually take the highest price and add a few bucks on top of it. The only advantage is that the cards are really clean. Usually no wear or play marks. Don't let the prices in the display case fool you, they recheck every single price upon purchase to make sure that you aren't getting a deal. On top of that, it's cash only (I'm sure for tax reasons), so you'd think they'd at least be able to match online prices. The owner seemed like a nice guy, and most of the cards are from his personal collection. The other guy who he has working for him is also nice, but doesn't seem to know too many of the cards outside of the current block (which is fine, but ends up making you wait long amounts of time as he looks up cards). Seems like a decent environment to play casual at, but my rating is lowered mainly for the inflated prices. I'd suggest only buying cards here if you only need 1-2 cards and it isn't worth driving to Frank and Sons for. read more

This store is horrible!!! Overcrowded, cash only. They don't sick to their word. Went there today to play in 50 person cap event and they let 74 people in the event adding rounds in the process. They also started 30-45 mins in a 7 rounds tournament and didn't reveal prize support until late in the tournament. A lot of people weren't happy on how this tournament was ran!!! Please don't go this store and hope to have a good tournament experience you'll be very disappointed!!! read more

As a almost entirely inexperienced Magic player, I came in looking to buy some packs and see if anyone could help point me in the direction of starter sets and whatever else. Instead, Paul asked if I had any extra time (about 30 mins) so he could show me how to play Magic with a mini starter deck, which he gave to me afterwards. I was totally surprised and thankful that he was willing to show me during a busy Saturday! And so we played a few rounds and I learned the fundamentals and now I'm super jazzed to learn more! Husband and I stopped in for some Adventures League DND while on vacation. The staff and players were amazing! Couldnt have been more welcoming. Wish we could play here more often, but such is life. BIGGEST THING TO REMEMBER: Cash only. Okay so when you first drive up, you're gonna be instantly turned off and not want to go in. The building it's in isn't incredibly nice and you have to park behind it and walk in through the back to get to the front door. It's a super weird little complex. But honestly, you have nothing to worry about. The shop is tiny but not cluttered, full but not dirty, and the staff is incredibly friendly, if a bit awkward. I came in specifically looking for D&D dice (which were only $4, and I'm really pleased with them) and the guy behind the counter helped make the whole process last no more than five minutes. A great little shop with what I assume are some pretty cool people, and you're not really going to find anything like it in the area. I hope it's doing well because there aren't enough places for things like this. read more

Something to note: this place is pretty compact and kinda hard to find from the street. There is a sign, but I personally didn't notice it as I came by in the evening. It's situated in this apartment like complex that was transformed into some businesses. The parking lot is extremely shady looking, especially due to the fact there is very low lighting back there, and lots of places to hide. Probably just my paranoia kicking in, but doesn't hurt to be a little vigilant. The staff were all extremely friendly (although admittedly looked very tired) and polite. I have only come in a few occasions to pick up magic cards that my local store was out of stock on, but I never regretted coming. The staff is quite helpful and they sell boxes for very good prices. I haven't been to any of their events yet so I can't comment on how well they're run, and I'm somewhat weary on the space situation. Some of the other reviews mention a backroom, so maybe it's not as bad as it looks from the front where the store counter is. This a follow-up to my experience/review at SoCalMagic's launch day party event. WotC eventually helped SoCalMagic locate the missing event Promo cards (this was done over the weekend too). Paul at SoCalMagic called me on Monday evening letting me know the cards have been located and I can pick them up anytime. I dropped by the store on the following Wednesday, and Paul had a promo card ready, nicely sleeves and all. Even it wasn't really his fault; he apologized for the whole ordeal. Unfortunately this place is a little far for Friday Night Magic (FNM) for me. But I am definitely coming back here for future pre-release/launch events. read more

This place is definitely the go-to place to play MTG in Orange County. The staff there are super friendly, nice, willing to help you out and extremely knowledgeable. The supply is plentiful. Great selection of cards, supplies, and other game collectibles too (D&D, ascension...ect). The competition is a great mixture of great players with really cool attitudes. All the players I have met here are super easy to strike up with a conversation with and love to trade! The playing environment is comfortable and chill. When an event is run there is almost always some sort of random giveaway/door prize, simply awesome! I highly recommend anyone who plays MTG to come and check this place out. Inaccurate store hours. First review on yelp. I guess yelp has never let me down until now. After a day of booster case openings, I found out that the eBay seller who sold me toploaders and penny sleeves only sent 400 of the 500 penny sleeves. It was already past 8pm and I knew my local hobby shop was closed. Yelp to the rescue, or so I thought. SoCal Magic was listed as OPEN until 10pm. This place is a 25 minute drive, but it was just barely past 8pm and I wanted to finish packing the usps priority parcel to my brother tonight. This way I could just drop it off at the post office tomorrow morning. I drive up to the store front around 8:40pm and the whole lot is empty and the store is closed. none of the nearby stores are open either. There's a small signage posted on the rear and side gates and I'm wondering if they're posting holiday hours. I park my car and get out to get a closer look. Turns out, it's their usual hours and the store is supposed to open until 10pm on Mondays. I called the number listed on yelp and sure enough I was directed to voice mail. If you ever plan on visiting this store, make sure to call to check if they're open, because they don't adhere to their own store hours. read more

Now PENNY the wife or gf that's a whole different story rude no common sense doesn't want to sell you product when you spend more then $20 in packs. Ugh this always happens buy 1 pack charges you $3 for pack you pay with a $5 dollar bill gets this she uses a calculator yet still gives you the wrong change. They should really require high school diploma.There is a good thing about Penny she's good to pack war you always come out a winner. So I guess there is hope for her after all. Now Tournaments are expensive that Friday Night Magic is $10 and their prizes are not that great. another issue is it's cash only which is a bummer even if you have to pay the tax for credit card I think they should take credit card.I think people will spend more money.they're good for single sometimes but there's other card shops that are competitive and don't bump up the price on cards after seeing a Price tag. read more

Pretty cool little spot, I needed some extra cards to finish off a deck before FNM and saw this place on YELP. I called during the day and asked if they had a playset of 3 different cards I was looking for. The lady I spoke to sounded a tiny bit annoyed as I was listing off the cards and which expansions they were from, but she told me she would look for them and call me back in a couple minutes. Sure enough she called me right back and let me know they would be 25 cents each! I went in on my lunch break and they had the cards waiting for me.
