Well this was a bit of a rude awakening . We had purchased rock and bark from them before, a good experience , helpful folks and quality rock and bark. I've recommended them to all who asked and quite a few did follow through. So I'm driving up, money ready to buy more stuff from them. But apparently there was no interest in my business. Rude, inattentive, zero willingness to gain my business. As a matter of fact the person purportedly helping me was mostly invisible, sort of hiding from my view, never stopped working his phone and all the answers were NO. They could not get this for me, they did not carry this, they could not deliver .... no explanation , no attempt to interact with me. Ok, I get the message. You are not interested in me or my business. Why are you there? Serious bummer , wonder what happened to great folks that were there before. While we live in Escondido and it is a bit of a drive but the prices are so reasonable the drive is well worth it. I have utilized this place for both mulch and gravel over the years. I am guessing I have been there 5 or so times, and have never had a negative experience. Perhaps I am just smart about when I visit, but I have never waited in any lines and service has been fantastic. I won't be trying any other place as long as they keep performing like they do. So Cal Mulch has excellent customer service as well as a great variety of mulch to choose from. I showed up on a busy Saturday afternoon to get a couple scoops of black mulch. From the time I parked, looked at what I wanted, walked in the office to pay, pulled around back to get loaded up and left, I was there maybe a total of 15 - 20 minutes. Been buying the gorilla mulch from So Cal for 4 years now to landscape our HUGE slope in the backyard...its a work in progress! The are professional and easy to work with! Great customer service, fantastic prices compared to other local places, quick and easy deliveries. The only reason I'm docking a star is I'm 100% sure they shorted me rock. I got two different types of rock, one type for two different areas. One of the rock orders was spot on, and the exact amount I needed and was expecting. The other rock for a different area was about 1 yard short maybe a little more. I had both areas professionally measured by a landscaping company, and I even ordered a little more than what I needed but was still about 1 yard short. As I said, the other area was spot on. What I ended up doing was leaving one area blank with no rock, and added more to another area. I decided just to concrete the other area rather than go buy more rock. To me personally, it wasn't a huge deal as the rock itself was a great deal so I didn't feel like I was cheated, just was a bit surprised that is all. Other than that, I highly recommend this place. I actually like the idea of concrete for the other area any way, so it works out. read more

I live near this place,So Cal Mulch,and since I purchased a particular rock product from them in the past,in small white bag form,I decided to get more of it. Having purchased 1000's of dollars of product from Tri-State Material,which is a few miles away,my car on the day in question was filled with bags of rocks so I figured I would swing by So Cal mulch on my way home from Tri-State,since they didnt have that one product I needed.Having looked at the hours on line before I left,and knowing they closed at 5 pm I raced over and arrived at 4:46 pm at So Cal Mulch. I walked in and no customers where there,just a person behind the counter,who I asked if he would please answer a few questions on the patio,which is where they keep the product samples. First he gave me a blank stare,and then he said,we are closed!! I said you close at 5 according to your website and this will only take a minute,as I just wanted to know if you have this product I want in stock.He reluctantly walked outside,which was odd since he didnt appear to be busy with anyone on the phone or otherwise,yet seemed to no care that a customer,me,just entered and was willing to buy product.After I asked if I could get a few bags of the rock I wanted,he told me,they only sell in bulk.This was not the case 2 years ago when I bought 6 bags of the small white bag size which fits in my car and is how I purchase my products. Then he began to lecture me on how its inappropriate to enter a restaurant and place an order 10 minutes before closing and how he wasnt being RUDE when thats exactly what he was being. Since I go to Tri-State which I strongly recommend since they have excellent customer service and a huge variety of products,I have often shown up at ten minutes til closing.And while its not my goal it does happen on occasion when in a hurry,but I am always met by friendly people,both those who are in the office and the workers outside who retrieve and bag the rock.They simply go and get it or at the very least take my order and I pay and drive back the following day to pick it up.Customers are the heart of a business and if this business,So Cal Mulch treats people like sh-t which it did,than I will pass along bad reviews and tell others the truth.The man at the counter was so obnoxious not just in what he said but how he looked at me and the NASTY egocentric attitude he displayed.Then another guy appeared who was heavy set and had a bandanna over his face and looked like a gangsta not because he was black or very big but because I have never seen someone with a bandanna covering the entire face from the top of the nose down and a hat up to the eyes,who was speaking to me as a customer.I could understand if he was shoveling dusty rock outside but when inside communicating,I would think he would at least pull it down.Anyway after being told the rock I wanted wasnt in stock and only sold in hulk now,I asked if they could let me know when it comes back in and begged if I could get it in bags,and he said yes but who knows if they will ever get back to me. Honestly I wont go there again.The first time 2 years ago,I was struck by the same attitude of another 20 something guy who ran the place,who raved to me about how he makes one of the soil mixes and how he knows it all.The attitude,of being egocentric,rude,disrespectful kid who was maybe 20 years old,who put down other businesses and raved about how great their products were,was just a turn off.I have used Southwest Boulder in Fallbrook many times,which is run by true professionals,as well as Tri-Stare Material in Winchester,also run professionally.This dude behind the counter at So Cal Mulch,as others have commented,seems to have anger problems and a personality disorder and is a nightmare to deal with,dont waste your time.Go to Tri-State if you live near Meniffee, Murrieta or French Valley!!! I like their soils and ground cover but not the attitude so much. They can be kind and helpful but they can also be very temperamental and can flip on a dime and become cold, nasty and hostile. Not the worst place in my personal experience but certainly not a deep sense of commitment to the customer/public. I've used this company a lot in the past. They need to step up their game. In reading some of the other comments and reviews from other places, I don't like hearing how the public is abused by companies and personal who just want to retaliate because they are moody. I was at my wits end with my soil supplier down the road, literally .4 miles away. They were not flexible, demanded a minimum $70 delivery fee (again less than 1 mile round trip) and had no insight or help on how to use the products or the best option for my project. Needless to say i started looking around and found So. Cal. Mulch, straight away i knew i had found a permanent place to source all of my soils, mulches, compost etc.. etc.. Not only did these guys beat the product price & beat the delivery price, they took the time to explain the differences and importances of picking the very best option for every project.
