We are three weeks into our six-week swim program here at SoCal Water Babies and it's been a great experience so far. My children really enjoy their lessons, and although it's been tough watching them struggle and cry at times, I know these lessons are crucial for their safety & development... This thought helps me cope with any discomfort I may feel. Mrs. Catherine's reminders to the children- "I am strong, I am brave, I can do hard things" - have also become a personal mantra for me when I see my children facing challenges during their lesson's. There are a few things to know before attending this course... Follow the rules that were emailed/texted to you. FOOD: we learned the hard way with this rule. The rule of "no dairy 4 hours before and no food for 2 hours before a swimming lesson," as eating beforehand can lead to discomfort and in our personal experience, bloating, gas, vomiting, and fatigue. Although we have all heard that "there's no evidence that eating before swimming increases the risk of drowning," it's still important to ensure the child's stomach is empty. We were advised to stick to complex carbs to ensure an empty tummy before lessons, but since my children's diet is low in carbs, we will need to make sure to eat earlier and go for a quick walk after meals to avoid any future issues. POTTY: Please note that restrooms will not be available for your children. If your child needs to use the restroom, please bring a portable potty. Additionally, Mrs. Catherine mentioned that her insurance does not cover the interior of her home, so parents be advised, bring a portable potty, and toilet paper for your babies, just in case. TARDINESS: Try to arrive 5 minutes before your scheduled lesson time. If you are late, the instructor will deduct the late time from your child's lesson, so try to be punctual. Every minute is valuable for your child. On occasion, the instructor may run into your scheduled time, but you will still receive your full lesson time. She does keep time on her watch. As should you if you feel like your children aren't receiving your full 10 min. 10 MINUTE LESSONS: I'm sure you've had similar doubts: 'Is this enough time?', 'Is the drive worth it?', 'Will my child really benefit?' Just remember, 'repetition is the mother of learning'. What I realized these lesson will do for my children... - Consistency: Daily exercise will help establish a routine, which can lead to better long-term adherence. - Habit Formation: Shorter sessions was easier to fit into our busy schedule, making it more likely to stick with it. - Recovery: Shorter lessons allow for our children to have better recovery, reducing the risk of injury or fatigue. - Mental Benefits: Daily activity has enhance their mood, trust towards water and had reduced the stress of learning something new! I don't need to worry about building endurance or strength just yet, I want to focus on establishing a solid foundation & survival skills for our babies. We kept getting rained out and had to do the class for longer than expected (5 weeks) but my whole family is super impressed with my baby's skills. The first couple classes were very hard for me because it's a lot of crying as the baby gets used to the pool, but surprisingly I didn't even cry at the graduation when they "fall" into the because she flipped over so quickly. I'm glad it was so close to me (3 min drive) because it is time consuming to go 4x a week but at least the lessons are over in under 10 min. An update to my original review: It's been two years since we finished our lessons. Baby is now 6 years old! Baby has always been a bit fearful of water, and even though she knew how to swim thanks to Miss Cathryn, she chose not to. As a parent, I made the decision to not force her; instead, I reminded her that she knew how to swim and when she decided she was ready to swim on her own, she would, and until then, mommy was okay holding her. Well, she made the decision a few weeks ago that she was ready, and since then, we have been swimming daily and I can't get her out of the water! The reason I am posting this tonight is because out of the blue during dinner, she said to me, "Mommy, maybe we should visit Miss Cathryn once this COVID-19 is over. You know, not for a lesson or anything, but just to show her how I am jumping into the deep end." Seriously, as a parent, you know how meaningful it is when a teacher has this kind of lasting positive impact on your child. I cannot thank Miss Cathryn enough for keeping my baby safe in the water. Oh, and as an aside, during our last series of lessons, Miss Cathryn advised me that the only issue we were facing was my daughter's self-confidence; that my daughter had great technical skills but just didn't believe in herself. As always, Miss Cathryn was right. Once my daughter was more mature and felt confident in her own skills, her fear of the water evaporated seemingly overnight. I post this for two reasons: one, to give credit and honor to an amazing instructor who has saved countless lives due to her dedication. But two, to remind parents that Miss Cathryn does not have a magic wand; that if your child is just not ready emotionally to swim on their own Miss Cathryn can teach them a life saving skill yes, but it's up to your child to decide when they are ready to use it for "playing" in the pool. Learning the skill of swimming may not turn your little darling into an Olympic swimmer overnight, but I can promise you if you allow Miss Cathryn to provide the tools, and if you foster and encourage a no-pressure loving environment, your child will get to the point that they can safely enjoy the water. We absolutely loved our time with SoCal Water babies, especially Ms. Cassandra! My daughter was part of the swim/float/swim program and went M-Th for 6 weeks! This program was crucial for us, as we have a pool at our house + with grandma and grandpa and teaching water safety was at the forefront of my mind. Cassandra was kind, patient, encouraging and so supportive as my daughter learned her new skills daily & progressed weekly. This program is meant to be done 4 days a week, for the 6-week time frame, so knowing that prior to signing up is key. They get out of it, what you put in & it is TOTALLY worth it! We actually just signed up for the group lessons for another 6 weeks (once a week) and will be signing up again for the refresher course next summer! Working with Sydney at SoCal water babies has been an absolutely incredible experience. This was our second year doing it for our 3 year old and the first year for our 15 month old. Our 3 year old can jump in and swim across the entire length of the pool by himself and can dive down to get toys at the bottom of the pool, it's absolutely amazing to see! I am so grateful for Socal Water Babies. This program taught both my children (8mo and 2yo) how to rescue themselves and swim in just a month. We just moved and had a pool. We have taken every step we can think of to protect our boys including swim lesson at so cal water babies. My 10 month old after only 4 weeks can get himself to float to the top IF there was ever an emergency. From the first day to his last day the improvement was 1000%. I know hearing your babies cry is hard but knowing I was doing this for his safety I pushed though and mrs Catherine made all the tears worth it! My 4 year old boy learned so fast! Some days ( as most 4 year olds) he cried or maybe didn't want to listen but he was a champ. We love Cathryn so much! I have two daughters and they both have taken swim lessons with Cathryn. My 1.5 year old started when she was 6 months old, and learned survival float. She is currently in lessons with Cathryn learning swim float swim. My 3.5 year old started when she was about 2.5, she learned swim float swim. She did a session this year and already graduated. She has been swimming all summer with so much confidence, and using her swim float swim skills that she learned from Cathryn. Cathryn is an amazing instructor. She is so in tune with each chid, and she really takes the time to learn what's best for each individual child. The swim lessons are a little intense at first, and some kids cry the whole lesson. However, it's worth every tear, and it's only 10 min long. Both my daughters have cried during lessons but once they get the hang of it it gets so much better! And it's fun for them!
