I also wanted to…read morerespond to a review I saw here that I personally do not think reflects the environment of this gym. From my experience, this gym has been very safe and respectful for women. I have never been disrespected by any men here. I go at different times of the day, both mornings and evenings, so I see different groups of people, and my experience has always been positive. Overall, the gym is great. I really like that there have been upgrades with new machines being added. It's nice to see the gym continuing to improve the equipment for members. One suggestion I would have is adding more recovery options. The sauna is great, but many gyms are starting to offer additional recovery amenities. It would be really nice to see things like massage chairs, a cold plunge, or other recovery features added for members. Another improvement that could help would be organizing some of the machines a bit more by section, such as grouping leg machines together and arm machines together. Aside from those suggestions, I really enjoy this gym. It's a clean, safe environment and a great place to work out. The staff here are also great and very helpful. I saw some people mention that the blonde woman who works here is rude, but that has not been my experience at all. She has always been very nice. She may have a strong voice and might come across as serious at first, but once you talk to her she is actually very kind. She may just not be a super bubbly person, and that's okay because everyone has different personalities. I would also like to point out that all of the employees here have been nice and respectful. When I called, I was told this was "part of the waiver I signed" in a dismissive tone. California has strict laws requiring gym cancellation terms to be clear and not deceptive. An arbitrary holiday deadline buried in fine print is shady at best.

The weight room was sizable, but I personally didn't love whatever brand the single decline press bench was, as the smallest setting was too tall for me, lol. This is one of the nicer LAFitnesses I've been to, and I've been going around SoCal trying out different ones. It's bigger and better stocked, and seems more geared towards athletes in general.

Huge recreation space, so many different amenities to try, overall a pretty nice recreation center…read more After 4 years of coming here to the student rec center at UCR, I've decided to write a Yelp review. There have been so many changes over the years to the gym here at UCR, mostly to try to better the place. They've moved things around, made things nicer, added more things, and overall improved the gym space but adding things like extra power racks and now they have a weight sled on the second floor. Service is generally friendly but usually whenever I ask the front desk for things, they seem lost or they act like they don't care about anything. Overall, I do think that this recreation center is a lot nicer than other the other UCs. Some of my complaints include that they refuse to have higher dumbbell limits, since the highest dumbbells only go up to 100. I know it's not in-demand to have them, but if students need to progress, you'd think they'd add more weights. I also don't like that they got rid of some of the leg machines downstairs and moved them upstairs. By doing that, you're making students become even more lazy from doing leg workouts more often and you've created a chicken leg epidemic! haha If you're coming to this gym from outside of the university, I believe that they have guest passes for $5. But if you're from UCR, I highly suggest utilizing this gym because it's included in your tuition.

They have any type of weight training you need, an indoor track, beautiful pool, tennis courts, basketball courts, and almost anything you need. The equipment is kept clean, and you can use the rooms to do floor training when classes aren't being held. Speaking of classes - they have people come and teach Zumba, Pilates, or again - anything you need. Water stations on both floors, and clean bathrooms on both floors as well. Sometimes the SRC gets crowded, but that's mostly after the New Years. If you avoid prime hours of working out you'll have no problem getting the machines you need. However, even if it is crowded, you'll still get what you need with a short wait time. If you're a student or have the opportunity to use this gym, I strongly recommend it!

But what really sets this place apart are two things that are hard to come by: an awesome crowd and genuinely friendly, welcoming staff. Although my circumstances and commute eventually changed and I could no longer make it in regularly, it honestly took me almost a full year to cancel my membership -- not because of the gym, but because I kept hoping I'd be able to stop by again and train with the friends I made there. Rowers, Bikes, Bars, Plates, Ergs, Racks, Dumbbells, Kettlebells. It is a first class operation. Not to mention they have meals, supplements, and fitness plans to help meet your goals. The owner is a nut. Yes I said it. He is all over the map in a good way. He has unlimited energy. He's the type of person that you wanna be around because he inspires and motivates you. He is very intense and he might be crazy (in a good way). With that said, Chris is the guy you want to train you and energize this group fitness environment. Chris really cares and is so passionate about good technique, gains, health and he loves to yell, play loud music and motivate you. It is a blast. He is in your corner. Chris is a solid dude and you will take the time to give you the tools for your success. Jessica (Chris' wife) also is very passionate about fitness. She is a beast, and has an extra gear and often works out with the group when she is not busy with new clients. Chris and Jessica are an awesome team! It is more than a business to them and they love what they do which makes all the difference. Workouts: Expect the unexpected. No other workout routine can give you so much in so little time. I think the best part of Ape Arena is the family environment. Most people here are not teenyboppers or people that are looking to date other people, they are folks that are established and are trying their best to achieve personal goals and there is definitely a sense of community when we're all working out together. What sets this gym apart from others I believe from what I hear from my other friends at other gyms is our coaches are absolutely amazing. In addition to Chris, you have Malik and Chity (I know I misspelled it) and they are alike in consistency but all have great strengths individually. Collectively they are all professionals and masters of their craft and they all care about you, your goals, and your health. I love the team that they assembled I think I will be coming here a long time because I have so much fun doing hard work and the results I have seen are absolutely amazing. Pound-for-pound I am probably the strongest I have ever been in my life and that's pretty crazy because I was pretty fit in the Marine Corps.
