This is a well overdue review! We hired Social Paella to cater my wife's 40th bday party. We had about 50 guests, and half of them were Spanish descendent people, which are well known for making the greatest Paellas. So no pressure on these folks! Communication was smooth. We went over the menu options and pricing. Besides the Paella, we chose a couple of "tapas" (appetizers), and dessert. Pricing is very reasonable. They showed up an hour before the event to set up and start cooking. To give you an idea on timing, they showed up at 4:00pm, started serving appetizers around 5:30pm, and the Paella was served around 6:30pm or so. Everything was delicious. They were very friendly, and interacted with our guests as well. They cleaned up after themselves, and helped us boxed the leftover food. We are so happy and thankful to have found Social Paella. We just attended a party where Social Paella catered and it was just incredible. First the tapas appetizers were wonderful. The meats like the iberico ham and the goat cheese and peppers appetizers and charcuterie plate were just a few of the great treats. The tapas was better than some we had on a recent trip to Barcelona. But the paella was the star of the night. The shrimp paella was so fresh and flavorful. We had Social Paella cater a small birthday lunch (15 people) in our backyard, although due to wintry weather, we moved the dining tables indoors. Jesus Romero and his crew of two arrived on time, set up, began cooking three paellas from scratch, and were ready to wow the guests when they arrived at 12:30 PM. Guests got to watch the paellas being cooked and finished, which was fun for those of us who love food. The paellas were absolutely delicious. I had seconds, and I think every one of the guests went back for more, too. Once Social Paella had ascertained that everyone had eaten their fill, they carefully packed up paella servings in containers, and every guest got to take one home. Amazingly, there were exactly two left over, just right for my husband and me. After Social Paella had packed up there wasn't a trace of their outdoor kitchen left on our patio. It was a fantastic experience start to finish. All the guests had a wonderful time, and best of all, I had a wonderful time (and didn't have to cook or worry about the food). So upset. My husband contacted them over 2 weeks ago to ask how it worked - we were coordinating a surprise for my Mother-in-law's birthday. Was told by the woman who answered the phone "as long as we have 2-days notice, you'll be fine". We organize a few other details, and call back 4 days in advance and are told by the same woman "sorry - we're too busy". She even REMEMBERED the conversation where she told us 2 days, and when asked why she didn't tell us more advance notice might be necessary she just sort of... verbally shrugged. This isn't good customer service, and it leaves a taste in my mouth that is DISTINCTLY LESS DELICIOUS than paella. Bummer. We were all really looking forward to it too. read more

I coordinated with Lucero to cater my husband's birthday party. I reached out initially to check availability by phone and we completed event details, menu planning and billing over text and email. Lucero and team arrived about 2 hours before serving to set up. She provided a server and bartender as well which was so helpful. Social paella was one of the amazing caterers at our wedding. Their tapas they served during cocktail hour were incredible. We had the patatas bravas, my personal favorite the pan con tomate (also has jamon on top), and the shrimp skewers. My whole family and many of my guests could not stop raving about their paella especially their squid ink paella. My first Spanish seafood paella experience was pretty exciting! On my leisurely stroll down the Old Town Pasadena Farmer's Market, I stumbled upon the smell of something delicious. It was PAELLA!!! I've never seen it made/in person before and have been wanting to try it for some time now. The lady at the front was super nice & I got to try samples of their seafood paella and their gazpacho. BOTH of which I have never tried prior to my visit. I just had to get the large seafood paella for my lunch. They only do catering at the moment, but I believe they are there every Sunday 10-2pm at the Farmer's Market on Holly (between Fair Oaks and Raymond). The Large dish was $11 - it was filled to the top of the togo box container and it was an array of 3 jumbo shrimp, 1 baby shrimp, 7 mussels, peas, red and green bell peppers... and i don't know the difference between cuttlefish and squid... i thought they were the same, but i believe it was squid. I engulfed the entire thing in maybe 10 mins. A good thing to know, if you plan to see them at the Farmer's Market is that they accept credit card as a form of payment. (Something I think all businesses should consider doing if they tend to work outside of a brick and mortar). Those card sliders that attach to the iPhone or iPad are SO convenient (and awesome!). read more

I always start the night off with this appetizer. Tortilla Española- $6- 5/5 - I'm not from Spain, but i would describe it as a potato and egg pie without the crust. It is surprisingly light, yet filling. Order one and split it between 2 people. You can always order more. Paella- They come in individual paella pans. They usually have 3 options vegetarian, chicken and seafood. Sometimes they do have specials, which is arroz negro. Arroz negro is squid ink rice with seafood. Now onto the good part. Chicken Paella- $12- 5/5 - The chicken comes out juicy and tender, talking to Chef Jesus, he talks about how it is very hard to find good chicken in the States. In Spain, he was used to chicken that was raised in the open. We all know that is very hard to find chicken like that in Los Angeles. Seafood Paella- $ i forget the price- 5/5 I believe it comes with squid, clams and shrimp. I switch off between this one and the chicken. Squid Paella- $13- 5/5- It is very hard to find squid ink anything. Usually it has to be a very high end restaurant. One cannot go wrong for a dish that is served for 13 bucks. It comes with shrimp. I encounter Social Paella at the Old Town Pasadena Farmer's Market on Sundays though you can also cater with them. They are a showy stand, with three paella pans going at the same time. The smells coming from the pans are alluring and it's mesmerizing to watch the simmering rice in broth. We purchased a large size ($11) of the pork rib and chicken paella, which comes with one tender pork rib, a few pieces of chicken, green and red peppers, green beans, and fava beans with a saffron hued rice. Was it delicious? Yes! The rice was less crunchy than I expected and less saffron tasting, but all the flavors had melded together and the meats were tender. It's just that the portion is quite small. A large is the size of a small square takeout container and a small is served on a paper tray. They make a good product but I can't afford it! read more

I really wanted to love this place. I saw that the old town farmers market had a stand selling paella and other Spanish food and I was so excited to check it out. Sadly the excitement ended there. Waiting in line to order, the woman taking orders seemed extremely overwhelmed with 6 people in line. When I got my order I was severely unimpressed with the size of the portion compared to the price I paid. A small container of paella is $6 and it's about a handful of food. The large portion is in fact what you would consider a small. I would have been able to overlook this if the paella was amazing but sadly, it wasn't. It was overcooked for sure. The only thing that saved it was the bright spritz of lemon I squeezed into it. Being that I recently went to Valencia, Spain, the birthplace of paella, I'd like to think I have a great point of reference as to what paella should taste like. Overall it was not bad but for the price it wasn't great. The good thing is that they atleast gave me a few shrimp and one clam for my $6. The grilled shrimp I got was good and was fairly priced at $3 a skewer. It had 4 shrimp on it and was layed out on a piece of bread with aioli. Being that it's hard to find Spanish food, I can see the appeal but I would save your money for a different place. read more
