The CBO was very polite and explained things respectfully and professionally. I know some people are quick to judge these departments but they are in place to protect us citizens. The CBO was very personable and my interactions with him were positive. My advice to my fellow citizens of Holly Hill is don't rush judgment on our city workers just because they do their job. A permit was immediately pulled and work continued. Thanks CBO for your understanding and for all you do in the community.

And, for those who just can't do without ice and snow, we have that too... we even have a town named Christmas. Yes, Virginia... there really is a Christmas, Florida. Florida may not see much snow, but the small post office near historical Fort Christmas sees plenty of activity prior to the holidays. People come from miles around to have their Christmas cards postmarked "Christmas, Florida!" If you go, expect to wait in longer-than-usual lines for what has become a holiday tradition for many. Christmas, Florida, is a strip of highway 50, east of Orlando, with an overly large post office and a number of local attempts at the theme. Christmas pennants hang from every telephone pole, there's a Christmas trailer park, a perennial fully decorated evergreen tree, religious grottoes, and a small but ominous locked Christmas Museum, apparently open only by appointment or at special events. There are a few things Christmas is famous for one being the post office but that's another review another is Fort Christmas that's also another review then there's the most famous person coming from Christmas noooooo it's not Santa it's James Wheeler a.k.a. Tex. American Sculptor James Hughlette "Tex" Wheeler's Headstone, located in the Fort Christmas Cemetery in Christmas, Florida. Mr. Wheeler is best known for his sculptures of the famed racehorse Seabiscuit and the jockey who rode him to fame, George Woolf at Santa Anita Park in California as well as a statue of Will Rogers at the Will rogers Memorial in Claremore, Oklahoma. If you ever have the opportunity to stop in you should it like stopping in to see the the world's largest ball of twine or the largest frying pan you know it's gonna be on your bucket list now :-)

Also, arrive 30 minutes early- for 2 reasons: parking- while there are places around the building to park on the street, good luck finding a space. I ended up simply parking in the garage- which, by the way, costs $20 for 2 hours. Also, you can leave the garage through 2 doors, but those same doors are locked from the outside, so you have to walk all the way around when you leave to get to your car. Upon entering the building, you will be asked if you have a reservation, and you will have to show it to the security guard. Once in, be prepared for airport security- removing all metal, going through a metal detector, and being wanded. For me, anyway, after that, everything was a breeze. Upon entering the 3rd floor, I was again asked if I had a reservation and had to show it to the security guard, who in turn directed me to the kiosk where I signed in and was given a paper ticket. I was given a number that corresponded to a screen. I sat down in a very uncrowded room, and a few minutes later, my number came up; they also sent me a text. I had a very pleasant agent who helped me do a name change on my social security card, and I was done in less than 10 minutes! I headed back down and got in my car, paid for parking on the way out, and was on my way!

Getting through to the national or local office is stressful to say the least. After getting…read morethrough the automated operator, I was on hold for 20 minutes (calling first thing at 8:00 am EST), I explained that I need to change my name on my card, we were disconnected. When I called again, the representative transferred me to the 'technical representative when I do Not have a 'user' or 'password' issue. I CANNOT get through their screening website even to get an appointment. When I called the published number for the local office, I was really speaking to the National office. The system is so inept that after confirming my appointment, I asked her if it was the location I am familiar with, she explained it was not. She explained that according to my Zip Code, that is the office the system generates and became 'snippy' with me. The irony is that the office closest to home has my same Zip Code yet the system does not allow them to make an appointment with that office. From our experience and that of friends, people get there at 6:00 am in order to get an appointment to be seen that day. UNBELIEVABLE!!!! to say the least!!!

There were a number of people coming in and out of this facility but there were plenty of windows staffed to assist everyone without a wait. I usually do mail in balloting but decided to drop off my ballot in person to have it scanned and accounted for, it's not that I'm not trusting of the USPS, it's just it's that important to me to exercise my right to vote while eliminating third party handling. I prefer to cast my vote in person on Election Day but my past travel schedule forced me to sign up for absentee voting which I plan on changing going forward. We are very fortunate to have these options here in Florida and it's good to see it's all managed in a very secure facility, so there's no good reason for anyone legally registered to vote in these United States not to do their part and participate in one of our most sacred of rights...

Having visited…read moreWinter Park many times I was well acquainted with Rollins College, the alma matter of beloved children's television host, Mr. Rogers. While walking in downtown Sanford I learned that it also has a connection to Sanford too. Next to the First National Bank No. 1 building constructed in 1883 is a historic marker for Rollins College. On April 28, 1885, Rev. E.P. Hooker, Rev. J.A. Tomlinson, Hon. F.W. Lyman and Rev. S.D. Smith met in the Lyman Bank Building on this corner and incorporated the college. In 1924, Rollins College was the first home of WDBO, the first radio station in Central Florida and, for a long time, the only one that could be picked up on radios in Sanford. In the pre-television days, broadcast entertainment and information for Sanford residents, including special programming produced for Sanford, came from the Winter Park school that had its roots here in Sanford. The marker is different from the typical blue Florida State and Seminole County historic markers. The marker itself is actually quite old. It was erected in 1935 by the Sallie Harrison Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution and other citizens of Sanford and Seminole County.
