Covid made everything over the phone which i guess lead to the ladies in the office being lazy & not wanting to do their jobs correctly or professionally. They also are very careless with others sensitive personal info, they need to figure out a better safe way of sending people's documents out to them that way both parties are able to track the documents & they wont be misplaced! Having just completed my visit to this social security office, I can understand the complaints about the lack of parking and standing in line to enter the lobby. The majority of the people there were senior citizens and some had disabilities so the walk is an issue for them. I knocked off one star for their sake. My experience, however, was positive. I arrived about 10:45 am without an appointment. Parked about 100 yards away, waited in line for less than 30 minutes and about 45 minutes in the lobby before my number was called. The entire visit from the time I parked to the time I left took about 90 minutes. I was expecting it to take much longer. I did see the security guard reviewers have raved about and, yes, he is very friendly. There was a younger guard also and he was courteous and helpful. read more

Made an appointment for 3 pm (probably a month ago or maybe a bit less). I checked in at 2:45ish. They have a check-in kiosk at the front. If you have an appointment, check in as just that. Because even guards tell you something else. In my case, one of them corrected himself after telling me to check in as something else. I got called to one of the windows at 3 pm sharp. As long as you make appointments prior, I got the impression that you won't wait much, unless you get there early. If your objective is to update your social security status, whatever it is, like marital status, or name change, you need to fill out a form. There's only one form that applies to pretty much every change (according to the lady at the window), and at this location, the forms are located at the back. If you don't fill it out before being called to the window, you will have to wait till the next person is helped, which happened to me. Even though it took me less than 2 minutes to fill out the form, I had to wait for a good 15 minutes till the lady with two babies was completely helped out. And one of the office guards is a comedian (no pun intended), which helps keep the mood up in general. Overall, the process was quick and painless. And the agents at the windows call people fast. They don't wait or waste time taking time (for themselves) in between, which is great. read more

5 stars for the security guards!! 3 stars for the staff average. 2 staff were very nice and helpful. 3 others were barely tolerable, rude, assumed I didn't know what I was talking about, called me rude. One associate had to come in and explained to her what was going on and told her to show me the screen of her computer. She said "No, she doesn't want to see it!" I said that I did!! So he made her turn the screen so I could see what had been written on my case. Thank goodness there are still some good people there!!! read more

[Review #136] I needed my newborn's SSI in order to add him to my medical insurance. I called Social Security Administration last week & the rep said I needed to physically bring my CA D/L & his official birth certificate to the local office. I was put on hold for 1-1/2 hours to get this simple answer. I figured it would be less crowded going some time after lunch, & arrived just after 2:00 PM. The parking lot was partially filled, which I took as a good sign. I was hoping for the same experience that I had at the L.A. RR/CC in Norwalk. There was about 2 dozen people in the waiting area, so I quickly registered on the kiosk, got my ticket, & saw that I was 2nd in queue. =) However, the good feeling didn't last when I was called. The window I was called to still had people asking questions; the male attendant was abrupt & rude to the 2 senior citizens. When I saw this, I had a bad feeling. :-( As I explained my issue, he kept interrupting me multiple times & said to wait for my LO's SSI in the mail. I didn't receive it, you idiot, that's why I'm here & was directed to physically appear in this office by the Social Security Administration. Stop interrupting & listen. After arguing with him to find out if my LI's info/card was received & if it's in process, he said it was in the system early November. Well, it's mid-December, so there's obviously a problem. He also said my LO's birth certificate is not a valid form of ID. I countered that their Administration said it was. He said I need his immunization record, or daycare info, or school record. HELLO!?! He's a newborn, why would he be enrolled in school, & he's with me so he's obviously not in daycare. It's absurd to suggest these options. Duh! After another 10-minutes arguing my options, with continuous interruptions by him stating to wait for my LO's SSI in the mail, I told him I need to speak with someone who is "helpful & knowledgeable." I probably shouldn't antagonize him, but he obviously doesn't care & just stated robotically to wait for the card in the mail. I need my LO's SSI to add him as a dependent or he'll be dropped from my insurance. So how can I book his medical appointments if he's sick, or needs his immunization? I heard my LO waking & getting frustrated so I just left, fuming about the situation. On my way home, I tried to call the Social Security Administration again to see if they can provide an alternative so I don't have to deal with this incompetence... I was on hold for 45-minutes before the call was dropped; tried to redial & was on hold for 15-minutes before the call dropped again. At this point, I need to contact my work's HR & medical insurance to extend the timeline & pray I can still get medical assistance if needed while I try to resolve this. read more

Got off early from work and arrived to the SS office about 12:45pm or so. Found a parking spot right as I pulled in. Walked in when to a little machine that you type in if you have a appointment ( I did not) and type in what you are there for and then it prints a number for you. HOW NIFTY! KOOL- I like. Security guard is really friendly and funny and LOUD! Make jokes when he is calling the numbers and it was really really cause he kept telling people to turn down there cell phones. A good amount of people were in there and about 4 or 5 windows were open. I waited about 30-45 minutes and I was not event at the window for 5 minutes. I was in and out in a jiffy. So I guess the best time to go here is in the after noon time. read more

Expect a DMV like waiting process. It's a government system so I knew it would be awful going into this. I went to change my last name. I heard some tips after I went-best time to go is right when it opens, though there are a lot of people waiting to go in. Also, you can't make an appointment for name changes, but book an appointment if you can for any other type of service. I went mid December on a rainy day, which definitely kept the crowd down. There were plenty of weirdos and the facility seemed dirty, just like the DMV. The stars are really for how helpful the workers were. They really tried to help as much as they could, and make the best of the situation for the crowd of people waiting for 2 hours. The woman that I worked with let me come right back without waiting when I brought the wrong marriage document. I still had to wait a bit because she had gone on her lunch break upon my return, but she tried to be accommodating. Ok, So I knew that Mondays and Fridays were bad.... I talked to the security people at the front of the room, who were, according to the reviews above, very nice. And they were. Polite and friendly, really. They were evasive as to the wait time for some reason. The room was full of people, with less than 10 empty chairs. Good thing I brought my cell phone (and headset, since they don't want to hear any music playing) and some reading material. I was called at exactly 2:34 p.m. It was a 2 hour wait. The clerk who handled my case was patient and nice. You know, nice gets you nice. I didn't see that long of a wait time mentioned in the reviews above so I'm chiming in. 2 hours. Be ready. I dreaded my visit to the ss office for weeks. I got there @ 10am, an hour after they opened. There's ample parking and the facility was clean and well air-conditioned. There were already about fifty people in the lobby waiting for their number to be called. The security guards were really friendly and helpful. They answered questions as best they could. There are only 2 check-in kiosks in the front of the lobby. I was the only one checking in at the time but if there were others, I can see how there could be quite a delay. After I got my number from the kiosk, there was only one person ahead of me! Needless to say, I was super stoked!! Less than 30 min and I was out of there. There are two guards I have seen, younger one name Jay is much nicer and friendlier than the older one William here. If you come in the wrong day, you may end up stuck in here for eternity. If you want to sign up for an account, they can only help you to get an activation code, but if you have any further technical question, they can't help you so the trip is useless if you are not savvy with the electronic process of activating your account. Needed a SS replacement card. The security guards separate you into two lines: 1. Replacement cards (including name change) and 2. New cards and all other business. The replacement line then goes to a "check-in kiosk" where you input the nature of your business and you are assigned a number. There was plenty of seating to wait until you're called. I recently had to stand outside in the beating sun at the Long Beach Passport Center for one hour so this was nice. FYI, it may not seem like the numbers are called in order. Just be patient. It goes quick. The security guard is funny and will keep your spirits up and the flow going. Bring a book. They make your throw away your coffee so leave it in the car. Water only. No food or drink. I was in and out in 45 min. Arrived at 8:45a, open at 9a. I spent 2 hours at LB Passport Center getting a passport so this was not bad at all. read more

This place is crowded and you will be here for a while if you don't have an appointment. Make sure you bring something to occupy your time, so when boredom sets in you don't go crazy. Our visit was not that bad. There is the funny security guard that kept us all entertained and laughing. This place is very clean and there is a nice group of people interacting together. Here!! I gave myself 2 hours to spend here. The kiosk to check in was easy to use. There's security if you need help and they were polite and professional to the people they were helping. They weren't creepy or unprofessional like some reviews said. The lady that helped me was nice and took time to make sure everything was correct. I have dealt with this office three times in my life and they have always made it as painless as possible. Honestly this is the government, its going to be slow. But they go as quick as they can. I do have to give huge props to Mr Martinez. My son was born prematurely and as such qualified for SS and Medicare. In order to get the medicare I had to have the SS first. Mr Martineze helped me through the process and made it so painless. He was so encouraging, telling me about his own child who was born prematurely. He really had such compassion during one of the most difficult times in my life. I only spoke to him over the phone and he really made a huge impression. Its been a year now since my son was born and I had to come here and say how grateful I am for his help. read more

I came in 12:48 there is a computer for self check in, is pretty good you can choose your language and what you need and they will give you a number l waited 15 min they called me and got it done in 5 min!! So I got to the place to find a group of people already gathered outside (was debating to even get out my car) upon reaching the line it was separated by the people who only needed a replacement card *sigh of relief* the security guards that answers your questions & gives you your application along with a clipboard & pen are quite entertaining. Sorry in some ways it was ok but the room was packed with people without appointments. I waited an hour with an appt. As far as the service it was horrible. I was told what I have just found out was erroneous information. To make a long story short she told me my monthly benefit would be much less than I had anticipated from my statements from social security. After talking to friends, various other people and finally another person at the ss office I was given the correct information. I spent several days over the holiday worrying how I could ever make it on what I was first told. Be prepared, yes parking is impossible. Once inside looks organized but without an appt wait can be really long - no way to tell where you are in the queue. Oh, and by the way, no standing allowed. Don't expect a entertaining visit as it is a government facility, but it was a reasonable amount of time for the request. One word of advise... Well, the good news is that the place is very organized to handle lines and crowds, and Mr Williams, the security person, is delightful and tries to keep the mood light during the long wait. The bad news is that in our whole lives we have never met a more condescending, nasty, rude, incapable-of-listening person. My husband is 71, and I said, "Really? You've never met someone as awful?" He said No! Window 2 on Feb 21. No point in providing feedback to the office because they won't care and I'm sure the conduct wasn't "actionable." We met with a specialist almost an hour later (tho our lovely window 2 said 5 minutes) and she was fabulous, efficient and took care of us in under 5 minutes. Needed a replacement social security card for my daughter. Went online first and completed the form in PDF and printed it out. Grabbed her passport and mine too. Arrived around 10:00 am and had no issue finding street parking - right in front of the building. The security guard was a blast - asked me to step outside and stand behind the guy who was already standing outside. I didn't know the protocol but the guard was very affable and did I mention EFFICIENT? When he asked me to step inside, another kind gentleman asked me to follow him and he ushered me to a seating area by the side. I was literally in and out of here in FIVE MINUTES FLAT. I got my married and had to change my last name. I filled out the application and mailed it to the Torrance/ social security office certified mail. Almost 2 months had passed and I had not received any type of correspondence back social security office. I called the main 1-800 social security number to find out what was taking so long. first- wait time is extremely long over 45 minutes second- reps are unprofessional and gave me wrong information third- i had to call 3 times only to get conflicting wrong information from all 3 reps! I finally called the local Torrance office and there was no wait time. I spoke to Ms. Altman she was so professional, explained to me in detail exactly how the social security card application process works from the time they receive it, told me she would call me back within a week and let me know the status on my application. She called me back in 3 days and within a week I received my card! :) :) 5 stars for the awesome customer service I received from Ms. Altman 0 stars for the main social security phone number- reps they are extremely unprofessional and give very false information. read more

First time at this location & I have to say it was so quick :) I was scared because they close at 3 & I got there at 2 .. I asked the securities a few questions & they both were very nice & helpful , I waited about 25 min and got called to the window , & the lady at the window was kind of mean so that's why I'm giving 4 stars ! When I say rude is because I said "Hi" she didn't say hi back , when we were done I said " thank you have a nice day " and she just started looking at her nails and ignored me ;0 ..... but whatever I got what I wanted done so heyyyyy :D lol PS. I have been twice (my fault for not having the right paperwork) and the staff was so great both times. Friendly gentleman keeps the lines moving by making sure people get where they need to go. Security guard is super friendly too. The first clerk I dealt with was very informative and friendly. When I went back, the clerk was much more dry (my ADORABLE toddler didn't even seem to get her to smile) but still very efficient. Why doesn't the DMV run this way??? read more
