Like so many others I have had a horrible experience with California Carpets! I wish I had read these reviews before I did business with them. The salesman talked up "100% wool carpet" and it has been a nightmare since it was installed. For starters it sheds like crazy, even months after install. You have to use a very special expensive vacuum for the carpet which the salesman (MARK) NEVER told us. And now it's hard to believe but the carpet is damaged from a plastic chair cover we purchased to PROTECT the carpet! Believe it or not the plastic over the carpet created some sort of heat and condensation, so the carpet got wet and completely disintegrated. Who ever heard of wet carpet falling apart? And whoever heard of carpet not being treated so it can withstand some water? And no one EVER told us not to put a plastic chair cover on the carpet. We were trying to protect it from rolling chairs and now it's ruined! They took no responsibility. After several complaints they came to our house, took a few pictures and said they would submit a claim with the manufacturer because they are not responsible. They only "install and sell" the carpet but then act like they are not responsible! I kept asking for the status of the claim and they finally got back to me and said simply "claim denied"! I then asked how can I get the carpet repaired because I certainly can't live with this and they have never replied. I'm going to file a claim with the BBB and consumer advocate sites. It's so clear that they completely rip off the customers and don't care a bit about customer satisfaction. They have not heard the last of me. read more

We came here looking for an area rug. The idea was to find some carpeting that we liked and then have a section cut and edged. Just to be clear, we were not looking to install wall to wall carpeting (although I'm fairly sure they perform this service) or to find finished area rugs. California Carpets has a good selection, but it's a little like shopping at the Nordstrom rack. You have to be willing to put in the time to look through aisles and aisles of stuff. Ultimately we found what we wanted. The great thing also was that it was on a roll for a very expensive carpet but which was discounted because they only had a few more square feet left. That being said, the edging was not included and was not cheap. Overall, I recommend this place because there aren't many like it on the Peninsula. The staff was professional and they have a good selection. Just be prepared to spend a lot of time looking for what you want. To be fair, I think that's what it would be like anywhere that has a large selection of carpet to choose from. read more

I went through Costco, but unfortunately they subcontract the job to Cal. Carpets. It all started with the day the installers were scheduled to start the job. I took 2 days off based on what they told me. 30 minutes after the arrival window period, I get a call that they can't make it that day!!! So, I took the day off for nothing. On the second day around the time they said it would be completed, they tell me they don't have enough carpet to complete the job!!! They told my partner and I that the work would take 3 days and now it's been more than a month and will not be completed for another 2 months b/c, Jack Cantonese, refused to order enough wood for the job. When I went to inspect the work with my partner, Jack was extremely condescending and rude. Not only was he 30 mins late to the mtg to discuss the delays, he couldn't find the Condo building that spans the entire block on Sutter. He also demanded a parking spot. This is San Francisco. Contractors find their own parking. Once inside the home, Jack disrespected my partner and I and tried to force us to take damaged wood that was already installed. The installers were also completely unprofessional and caused many issues with our HOA. Using the resident luggage cart to move their work supplies and scratched up the newly installed floor (the small portion they completed) with the luggage cart. Jack Cantonese repeatedly told us while pointing at his clip board that all of these delays were in our contract and we had no other choice but to wait. Now we cannot move into our home and mortgage still needs to be paid along with rent. DO NOT EVER USE THEM. They were also the most expensive quote. I recently had a large carpet order and installation from California Carpet for my house. Much of the installation and carpet went well however in one room where the carpet is very important and visible there is a peaked, risen-up seam going across the middle of the whole room that is almost high enough to trip over. I called several times to get them to try to fix it or at least look at it and give me their assessment and they have not returned my calls or emails. I was very disappointed that the business did not respond to me when I identified this error in the way they installed my carpet. I will not be shopping there again, it was a very disappointing experience. If California carpets calls or messages me back to resolve the problem with their work installing my carpet I will update this review. read more

My blood boils whenever I reflect on my experience with California Carpet. The installation of hardwood flooring to replace the carpet was a total nightmare! I sensed that the sales representative, installer and office staff all appeared to dislike their jobs tremendously; and gladly took it out on the customers! The sales representative forgot to order materials, installers did not show up as scheduled and then showed up late when they finally showed up! The first installation had to be removed and reinstalled. The installation lasted a few months more than necessary for a straightforward hardwood floor installation. The customer service was totally lacking and the installation was poorly executed. A DIY installation by a novice would have yielded better results! I am in disbelief that there are reviews that contain positive comments. I cringe whenever I drive past California Carpet on Industrial Road in San Carlos. We purchased a whole house of wall to wall carpet here 10 years ago. Several years ago the carpet developed wrinkles. The customer service person was very condescending, told me I must have been dragging furniture across it (no), and charged $400 to stretch out three wrinkles. Now it is wrinkling again. I will star off by saying the quality of the carpet is 5 stars, as well as the incredible selection of carpet in their warehouse in San Carlos. BUT, the people that were sent out to install the carpet do not even qualify for 1 star. 2 non English speaking men who were new to this company. The one man who did have a bare bones ability to re-use the same 10 or so words, made it clear that the bed frame would have to be taken apart to and if I pay him cash he would put it back together. The words "Disemble" And then using his hand to indicate being paid cash followed by the word "Semble". "Dissemble, then Semble" for cash was repeated over and over as I was saying "No...no, um no" etc. I ended up calling the Manager over at California Carpet to tell him what was being attempted by these two men, and he (being bilingual) spoke to them on the phone, then drove over to my place. He took them into a private room behind closed doors for about 10 full minutes and spoke to them in a firm, very authoritative tone. He then told me not to worry, that everything was worked out and I was not to give them any cash. Fast forward to the end of the day and the completion of the carpet installation, I signed off just to get them out of there and to end the nightmare. True, the carpet was installed and all looked good EXCEPT the edges of where the carpet met the hardwood entryway and hallway. The edges were cut uneven and sloppy and were not tacked down or "finished" in any way. I had to hire someone else to come over to make it "finished" looking. I don't recommend using this place until (if and when) they are able to hire competent carpet installers. We recently pulled up our old damaged carpets and underneath we have damaged wood floors. We decided for now to get some area rugs to throw over the floor and call it a day. I didn't have a lot to spend and shopped around a bit (Ikea, Cost Plus, Home Depot, Costco, online, etc.). I noticed handsome rugs at a friends home, and she said she got them at California Carpet. I hadn't even thought of this place. I stopped here and got an attractive 8x11 oriental style rug on clearance for $159. It isn't a high-end rug (it's synthetic and machine-made), but it looks nice and with a dog and kid, I didn't want something super fancy or expensive. I hadn't seen prices this reasonable anywhere else. I also bought two anti-skid rug pads (one for this rug and a cushier one for the living room rug I'd bought at Ikea a few weeks earlier). My shopping experience here: + quick service + friendly, not pushy sales + affordable prices + wide selection + they got this monstrous rug to fit in my sedan! They don't have AC, so you might not want to shop here on the hottest day of the year. I was joking with the sales guy, Jason, that he might need to start rocking the Dwight Schrute look (short sleeves button down shirt) - and he got my "Office" reference - nice! read more

My recommendation for anyone looking to replace their floors and carpets -- Do not use California Carpet or do business with this company. With California carpet, you can expect to get the following: poor installation workmanship, terrible customer service (especially after they get your money) and refuse to accept and be responsible for damages they caused. Now let me tell you more about why I gave them such a poor rating and review. In April 2014, I purchased a new high-end carpet from California Carpet (San Carlos Store) and also a contract for California Carpet to install it. I scheduled this carpet replacement to be after I had my new hardwood floors and new baseboard installed (thank god, I selected a different company for that). Two installers came to do the work (Waldo Rodas and another person). After they finished their job, I found a number of noticeable dents and nicks on my newly installed and painted baseboards. One of the dents was so big it seemed like they hit it directly with a hard tool. Worse than that, at the bottom of my stairways where the carpeted stairs meet my new hardwood floors (which was just installed a day prior), there were about 10-15 small dents on hardwood floors right along the closet planks to the stairs. I made complaints to my salesperson at California Carpet, Mark Ghamgosarnia, who basically said that it's not his responsibility and threw it over to his installation manager, David Lopez. I spoke with David a couple of times on the phone who basically wrote me off by saying that he spoke with Waldo, the installer, who did not admit any wrongdoing, and California Carpet owners who denied to be responsible for fixing these damages. It has been over a month since my last call with them and they have not called me back to resolve the issues and address my complaints. I called back and spoke with the Carlos store manager, a woman by the name Nora. She was plainly rude to me on the phone and did not treat me like a paying customer. Needless to say, I will never do any business with them ever again and want to warn others from falling into the trap and have similar experience as mine. read more

I used California Carpet to install some Wall-to-Wall carpeting in my large Master bedroom in 2017. All went well, but I discovered that the solid color carpet looked different standing in one spot or the other. The installers had reversed the direction of one if the sections when they cut it and it wasn't until after they left, that I saw the flaw. I called, and to the credit of CA Carpet, they ordered more, and sent the fellows back to re-install it properly. Similarly, later that Fall, I used them again to install laminate flooring in my upstairs family room, hallway, living room and dining room. The installers worked hard, and finished up fairly quickly, but they did have to come back to fix a few things they had left unfinished. Several months later, by March 2018, my living room floor started to buckle quite noticeably. I called, and they sent out the original worker to look at it. He decided to just nail it down with small finishing nails. I told him I would like to consult with someone to see if that was the right fix. While I was on the phone downstairs, I could hear he had already started to nail it down without waiting... I guess he did not want to wait to hear it needed a more extensive fix, so he finished in about a half hour. Less than 5 months later, the floor had popped up again, even more, taking the nails with it. I called, and they sent a different fellow, Oscar Chicas, to troubleshoot it. He said that they had probably not left enough of a gap at the edges. He reported back to CA Carpets Manager, Greg Maciel who tried to order more of the same product to re-do the job properly. It took awhile because the product was discontinued so they had to call around to locate more. Finally, on Jan 3rd and 4th 2019, Oscar and his crew arrived, took up all the trim and saw that one transition piece had been screwed into the laminate and was preventing the floor from expanding as needed. They trimmed all the edges to prevent further buckling and replaced the pieces that had been damaged (when they'd been nailed and later popped back up). Now my floors are fixed, and I feel confident this time they are installed properly. This is not a negative review, because the moral of the story is that California Carpets backed up their jobs and were willing to fix things that needed fixing. That is what I was taught, "always run to the problem" and they did. I am, once again, a satisfied customer. read more

We purchased top of the line burber carpet from CA Carpet. They had a large selection and you can take the samples home for a few days. The carpet had a guarantee and even better they had an installation guarantee Purchasing the carpet was easy, living with the poor installation was the problem. They first take your brand new carpet and unroll it out in the middle of the street. Given i just purchased 'new' unsoiled carpet, it didn't make a lot of sense to me to roll it out on a street with oil, dirt, and other debris. The explanation i was provided was there was no alternatives. Second we had just installed brand new base boards that after their installation had hundreds of noticeable nicks and dents. Again i was told that was just part of the installation and we would have to live with it. Finally almost every seam was noticeable, some were really bad and noticeable from 20 feet away. We complained multiple times, the installers came out and attempted to fix the problem, but the seams were never fixed. Not to mention i spent hours patching the dents and repainting large sections of the baseboards. The store manager could careless about the guarantee and we threatened to take them to court. But since we sold our house we decided to not pursue it further. If you do purchase from them, i would make sure the installers follow your expectations. I would also make sure you know exactly what the installation really guarantees and take lots of pictures of your baseboards in case your need a 3rd party to intervene. read more

Back in 2009, California Carpet replaced the carpet in my condo and did a great job. No problems whatsoever. Unfortunately, I can't say the same this time. The esitmator came out to measure and told me I would need to have my newly painted expensive baseboards removed in order to have the carpet installed. This would then require having new baseboards placed, sanded and painted. When it came time for the installation, not enough carpet was ordered and my move to the new home was delayed due the incomplete work. The carpet quality and installation was very good and guess what? I did not have the baseboards removed as was suggested and there was no problem installing the carpets. I have no clue why the estimator would subject me to the stress and cost of tearing out and replacing baseboards when clearly it wasn't necessary. read more

They gave us a bid that was a good value, but moreover the sales rep, Jerry, paid attention to what it was we wanted and offered helpful guidance. The installer, whose name escapes me, was obviously extremely experienced and really seemed to have passion for a quality job - not the easiest thing to care so much after many years at a job. 18 months later I can safely say it was a job well done. While we were shopping the job, we experienced more than one operation that quoted insane prices with a "take it or leave it" attitude. Not so with these Cal Carpet. These guys did a great job on new floors for our utility room and 2 bathrooms. The job required doing some repairs on the subfloor as well. Cal Carpets does tile/laminate and hardwood, as well as carpet (despite their name). We actually put down a tile variant (I say variant because it's one of the newfangled types of tile laminate, not the traditional terracotta clay stuff). They let you take home the color samples and keep them for a few days, so you can see them in location in varying light conditions. The CC team showed up promptly with three guys on the team, and worked a 10-hr day and finished the job in one day (when they had initially estimated it might take up to 3 days). They kept the work area clean and organized. I would recommend them for anyone who's looking for flooring. Note that they aren't traditional tile specialists so if you're looking for that, they aren't the place. I personally preferred the tile/laminate that they carry over traditional tile, but that's just me. The stuff looks nice, is durable, very hard to scratch/damage, is good for wet rooms (bathrooms), and is warmer and softer on bare feet, than is traditional stone or clay tile. BTW this is the same company that has an office in San Francisco, and there are some SC Yelp reviews for them under that SF location. read more

I had used this business over the years for carpet. When I recently went in for vinyl plank flooring there was one sales person for the entire enormous showroom. She was nice but when I left my phone number for their measurement person to contact me, nothing happened. I stopped in in person to inquire after a few weeks and again nothing happened. Eventually a very grumpy guy came out and measured my house. Wouldn't you think that he would return that information to the store and then they would contact me. Didn't happen. I just reviewed the reviews here to understand why Cal Carpets in San Carlos gets the 3+stars it gets after my experience recently. The sales person I worked with on this job is MARK and all of my comments here apply directly to what this man tried to get away with, which believe just may be illegal. I have a good friend that I am helping to replace her wall-to-wall carpet with engineered HW flooring. I will say that when I explained to Mark my/our process in making selections, he left me alone and let us do our thing. Rather than rant and rave with the details, I will just list the most important things that happened: They were having a supposed 'President's Day' sale and of course we jumped through hoops to take home samples of interest to make sure we got the 20% discount on both the wood flooring and any area rugs we might want to purchase to go on it. When we were checking our samples out, I asked Mark about the prices he was giving us per square foot to make sure they included the 20% discount. His reply, looking me right in the face, was "I am giving you 'Designer's Discount' pricing which is BETTER" - My immediate reaction was "this is BS", but to make sure, I asked our railing guy about this who works with top Bay Area designers all the time and he said he never heard of such a thing! This really set me off, so I went home and went on-line to see how prices would compare with the exact same 4 products we chose. BINGO, all were less and some were as much as HALF of what Mark quoted IN WRITING! Going the extra mile (which I am known for), I then called other showrooms in San Jose to get quotes and learned the same thing! Mark also quoted their installation fee (BASIC without all the add-ons) at $4.50 per sq. This caused me to use YELP to see if I could find our own installer and I found someone that gets 5 stars consistently and contacted him - His basic fee for engineered nailed HW flooring is $3.99 and after reading some of the reviews here about installation NIGHTMARES, I am fortunate and glad I checked this all out! I know there are some glowing reviews for this place and I myself have made all my carpet purchases here, but I have learned a hard lesson and will never go back there! Horrific Experience!!! DO NOT USE. I spent over $23K with Mark at California Carpet in San Carlos and I am ASTOUNDED by HOW BAD their managers, salesperson, service and installation is!! This was set to be a 2 day installation. The two area rugs and front staircase were installed by Juan Carlos - he did fine job serging etc, no problems there. Then they sent another team to do the wall to wall portion of the job and that is where they COMPLETELY FELL APART. This guy literally cut a 1x3 inch piece of carpet and glued it to an area on my floor and thought that would be okay. What???!!! In addition, he did not know how to transition the carpet into the bathroom tile nor to hardwood floors. He thought he was going to screw a metal bar down to the floor and that would be okay. Seriously??!!!! When I called to complain, Vivianna (installation manager) told me the wall to wall guy they sent was the "BEST GUY THEY HAD". Really???! Fabulous .... After lots of back and forth, Vivianna and Nora (sales manager because of course my salesperson wasn't working the day of my install) promised me they would send Felix (again supposedly "their best" wall to wall installation person) between 3-5pm the next day to fix it. It's 4:00, he still isn't here, and dear Vivianna just called me to say she wanted to check if I was available so he could do a "walk through" to see what needed to be done and whether we could find a "convenient date". Great!!! So my stairs are full of nails with nothing more than padding on them, and now their "best guy" isn't even going to fix the job they should have finished yesterday had they sent someone competent. California Carpet does not stand behind their work at all. Oh, and I called my salesperson Mark today hoping they would help me out but he just said that he was out that day. I called to purchase carpet for more rooms, and asked about the buckling issues in their previous installation. Their comment back was that they could not fix it for free because it was past the 2 year installation warranty. I asked how we could ensure that the new installation we were about to purchase would not have the same issue. Their response was that I must have been dragging furniture and doing other acticitss to stretch out the carpet. Very condescending. We got great in store customer service from a lady whose name I unfortunately can't recall - we loved a runner that was out of our price range & she took the time to help us find something comparable that we are equally pleased with. The installer showed up on time & when they had said he would, and he did the job in the time quoted & at the price quoted. You wouldn't think that this would be that noteworthy but sadly it is! California Carpet did our house in San Carlos 20 years ago, and except for an issue with the stair installation, which we flagged and was corrected, we viewed our experience as positive. When I contacted them to consider carpet replacements to our Hillsborough home preparatory to sale, things were not amenable. The saleswoman said over the phone that they didn't want to spend time measuring our house if we were considering other firms. At the time I wasn't, so I agreed. The fellow who came to measure was helpful and discussed alternative carpet treatments and sections of work we could address or bypass depending on our budget, however he doesn't price. He said they wouldn't move the pool table, which I got separately priced at Sequoia Billiards. When I went to the showroom to view carpet options and prices, the same saleswoman showed me two off-the-shelf in-stock options at $22 and 27/yard and gave me samples to take home. The carpet looked cheap. I can read upside down after years in business, and I could see she had a layout map and a pricing table, including each work section with prices for moving furniture, etc. But she wouldn't give me the prices when I asked. She said I should take the samples home and decide what sections I wanted to do and then she'd price those areas. From our conversations, I understand that she viewed their measurement and layout competitively confidential, but not giving me the prices she already had made it hard to decide what areas make budget sense, or what furniture we could move ourselves to save some bucks. In my experience: 1) small flaws in the sales process mean bigger flaws in the final product, and 2) attitude starts at the top, so this saleswoman was following what she'd been taught and learned. Given this uncollaborative approach and paranoid sales process, I went to Bay Area Floors and I'll let you know how that works out if we go with them. At least they gave me prices via email right away, which allows me to play with various project scope options, and they will move the pool table for a fee. read more

We had a carpet cut and bound to make a large area rug. We also purchased a pad to go under the rug. Well, when we got the rug and the mat, we rolled them out into the room and the pad was a good 2 inches BIGGER than the rug. Since we had to pay $85 to have it shipped to us, there was no way that we were going to try to return the pad, so my husband went and bought expensive utility scissors and we ended up having to cut the pad to fit the rug (it was a thick, heavy duty pad, so this wasn't super easy). It wasn't even as though we had the carpet cut to an odd/unusual size -- it was just an 8x10 carpet!!!!! I don't know how they messed up by a good 2 inches. Very frustrating. Would not order from them again because of this. read more
