For a nice warm-weather treat, enjoy lunch outside here in the spring! The Capitol Market vendors have flowers out for sale, making for colorful ambiance, and there is no shortage of people watching. My friend chose her usual "Undecided" salad. Fresh greens, tomatoes, olives, with a scoop each of chicken, tuna and egg salad. SOHO's will gladly customize your choices if you prefer one or two of these salads over another. I had the Grilled Eggplant sandwich - picture caprese salad on a sliced pita with roasted peppers and grilled eggplant. Very yummy, albeit a little messy. The service does a disservice to the food. We came for a late lunch and ordered soup (minestrone and escarola), chopped salad, and wild mushroom pizza. The minestrone is oregano forward and filled with vegetables and miscellaneous meats (salami, sausage, etc.). The escarola soup was well balanced with white beans and sausage. Both soups were well made and great options on a cold day. I'm sure my soup would have been better if it was served hot, instead of languishing under the heat lamp waiting for our server to notice. It is an open kitchen so you can see everything, good and bad. If your food is up and your server is more interested in paperwork at the front desk it is pretty obvious. It was 2:30 when we arrived so no crowds to explain this behavior. It just seemed like her administrative duties took priority over diners. The wild mushroom pizza was light but rich with umami flavor. The crust was super thin and crispy, which I liked it lot. The salad was ok but not a chopped salad and the blue cheese dressing tasted like bottled, not housemade. Either the chefs did it wrong or the menu described it wrong. It's just a plain romaine salad with a tomato wedge, an onion ring, a couple of slices of seeded cucumber, and a dinky sprinkle of gorgonzola. For an $8 salad I'm guessing they make 500% + markup. Not cool and a disappointing salad. The wine list was good and the glass of wine I got ($8 or $9 Cabernet) was generous and a very nice wine, so I felt it was fairly priced after receiving it. read more

We had a really good dinner here the night after Christmas. We began dinner with an order of mussels with the garlic cream sauce which were very good. Ask for extra bread to enjoy the savory sauce. My friend ordered the lasagna, which he said was very good and was a huge portion. I ordered cannelloni which was also good. We ordered a bottle wine of Italian wine for the table. The waiter helped us select the right bottle and was delicious. The entire meal was very good and spectacular service. Tables were appropriately spaced with masks required. read more

I've eaten at Soho's many times over the years, primarily because friends insisted that we go there. I tried most everything on the menu during those visits with varying degrees of success. Unfortunately, most of the time, I was not pleased with the food, and when I did find a dish I liked, I'd order it again and it wasn't the same. Therefore, I got in the habit of ordering their thin crust pizza with pepperoni, as it is a relatively easy dish and I figured "How could they mess that up?" For the past couple years, that strategy worked. However, I underestimated Soho's ability to find a way. In a visit last week, I split a large pizza with a friend. She was wanted to go to Soho's and I agreed, figuring I'd have pizza again. Fortunately, I also got a cup of Manhattan Clam Chowder. I will give credit to Soho's for mailing a good Manhattan (red) chowder. It was tasty, had enough clam in it to balance the tomatoes and had a good flavor. It was fortunate that I ordered it because had I not done so, I would have left hungrier than I did. Soho's finally managed to mess up a simple pepperoni pizza by failing to use sufficient toppings to cover all of the pizza crust. When it was set down in front of us, my friend grabbed a slice, as did I. There were four (4) slices per half. However, on "my" side (the half closest to me when it was set between us) three of the slices only had toppings in the center area, meaning that after an initial bite or two, I was left with what was essentially a large, thin cracker as wide as a slice and about 3-4" deep. Fortunately my friend noticed and told me to take a slice from the side closest to her,which I did. Therefore, with the slice from "her side" I had about 2 - 2.5 slices of pizza, meaning that I got roughly 1-1.5 slices of pizza out of the 4 on "my" side. I got nowhere near the 4 slices which I'd expected (and for which I paid). Due to Covid, I didn't put the leftover crusts back on the pan on which the pizza was served and by the time my friend offered me a slice from "her" side, there was no room left on my plate as it was all occupied by crusts that came with no toppings. read more

This is the second trip through Charleston that brought us to Soho's. We enjoyed it so much the first time that we decided to return yesterday. The first visit, we had pizza - enjoyed by the entire family, a nice thin crust with a variety of toppings to choose from. The entire staff were very welcoming to my family, in particular my 8 year old son. Yesterday when we returned we found the same welcoming staff and wonderful food. Joseph was our waiter, he made good recommendations and was a delight to speak with. My husband ordered pasta alfredo with shrimp, it was incredible! Very light (yet filling but not too much so) and flavorful. I had the caprese salad with blackened salmon. It was one of the best caprese salads I've had and the salmon was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Paired with a glass of Sangiovese it made for a great lunch. My son had the kids' portion of spaghetti and meatballs, also well done (the marinara was very tasty). I have seen some other bad reviews of Soho's which I find surprising and unfortunate - not my experience at all and I can't wait to return to Charleston to go there again. read more

After eating too many meals at Tudor's Biscuit World, we had been looking for a restaurant in Charleston that didn't include the word "biscuit" in the title. Don't get me wrong -- I love biscuits, but every now and then I want to feel like I'm getting a great meal that *cross fingers* is good for me. Soho's is located in a restored freight train station along with several other shops. Inside, the look is sleek and streamlined, casual yet sophisticated. Their wine list was impressive -- we tried a Brunello -- and the service in general was great -- waiters are on top of it without hovering. We each ordered soup or salad as a first course, then ordered several dishes family style. If you go here you must order the minestrone soup! Some of the best I've ever had! A deep bowl of delicious broth, with homemade croutons with delicate, melting Parmesan cheese on top. We ordered several pastas, the gnocchi being our favorite. Not too heavy, in a light sauce. Overall, impressed with the food and the atmosphere. I'll be back, and based on the crowd when we were there mid-week, so will everyone else. read more

Tempted to only do one star. I ate at the bar on a Friday night for my birthday meal. A restaurant with these prices should be near-perfect, but it fell far short of that standard. The food This was the most disappointing. I had stuffed shrimp & raw oysters for an appetizer, with escarole, bean, & chicken soup, and wild mushroom polenta for the main course. Only the polenta was worth the price. The oysters were awful, which makes sense since it was June and they are out of season, but hey, if you put them on your menu and charge that much, they need to be good. The soup was totally fine, but, again, not worth the price. The atmosphere I love the look of the restaurant with its open kitchen and high ceilings. The atmosphere is probably what bumped it from one star to two. The layout lends itself to seeing and being seen, which I like. The service The bartender seemed to be in a bad mood. Again, if I'm going to go to a restaurant with drink prices as high as they were, I expect to have a bartender that seems happy to be there and friendly. The only time he perked up is when I talked about how I was going to go to one of the Capitol Street dive-ish bars later. At one point, he mentioned that much of his clientele are from out of town (refugees from the Marriott, I suppose), which might explain why he treated us like we would never be back again. Also (and this wasn't his fault, but was the fault of the manager), we had to wait about ten minutes to get our gift certificate validated. Delicious Italian food. I had trout with veggies last week. One of my favorites. My husband loves the spaghetti. Pizza crust is kind of thin and floppy but tastes good. This restaurant has really come up in quality. Outdoor dining in good weather in the Beer Garden is very nice during pandemic. Inside dining has a sports bar plus elegant dining. Very good. Lots of prom kids show up here in their fancy dresses and tuxedos. Inside the Capital Market which is very hip and awesome if you get there before the market closes at 6:00. Has WV crafts and other items plus many more shops. A great place to hang out. A great place for family dinners. Good service and not too slow. read more

I came to Soho for dinner with a large-ish group this past weekend to celebrate my grandmother's birthday. The space is pretty neat, and I can say as someone who has lived in NY for over 5 years, that the decor is more than a half-assed attempt to look like a Soho loft. The ceilings are high, the walls are exposed brick, and there are beams running across the ceiling. The menu is Italian, and I was particularly impressed with the wine list, which was larger than the actual food menu. There were plenty of options for vegetarians and I ordered the cheese and roasted red pepper ravioli as an entree. My dish came swimming in a creamy roasted red pepper sauce, which was a bit of a surprise and I don't think the menu stated that it came in a cream sauce. That said, I'm not cream-averse, so I didn't have a major problem with it. It tasted good, but could have been hotter - I guess it was one of the first dishes finished from our table and probably sat in the kitchen for a bit. For the most part, my family members enjoyed their meals. My mom ordered the seafood ravioli, which on the menu said that came in a broth - but it arrived in a thin tomato sauce. I would just recommend to the restaurant that they make their menu a little more specific - how is the dish REALLY prepared? The cannoli dessert that my cousin and his wife ordered was not to their taste - they thought it was sour and actually sent it back. The waiter was very nice about this and took their dessert off the bill. Speaking of the wait staff, our waiter was quite professional and handled our table of ten well. My husband and I were in town for a business trip and chose Soho's because it was so close to our hotel. It was really busy at lunch time so we sat at the bar. The bartender was very friendly. I'm a vegetarian so I got the caprese panini which was AMAZING, especially considering the fact that it was only 6.95 and it was huge. My husband got the eggplant panini and liked it as well. This was a happy accident! We were planning another rated Italian place but the front desk at our hotel recommended Soho.... and BOYOBOY are we glad we did. Some of the 'best evers' we have ever eaten. Lettuce wedge is pretty simple, but theirs was the best ever. And mussels? Yep, best ever. And then, oh my goodness.... their polenta with spinach and mascarpone........ I am going to dream about this for a long time. Might write to the editors at Bon Appetit for their recipe. LOVED it! Located in the Capitol Market, SOHO is a "must" stop. Our waiter really looked after us well, pointing out the house specialities and suggesting an out of this world zinfandel without the out of this world price tag. We whetted our appetite with some artisan breads (the cranberry wholewheat one was amazing, but all were good), then on to the mains. I had the "Pork Porterhouse Steak" (pork chop) that was served with grilled risotto cakes and julienne squash and carrots topped with a Brandy creamed herb mushroom sauce. My dinner companion had the Five Spice Duck, which was a breast served with haricot verts, carrots and mashed potatoes topped with honey mustard sauce. We both raved about our own dishes while having meal envy of each other's. Pleasantly full (too full for dessert but not so gorged you feel ill), we ambled on our way determined to come back the next time we visit Charleston. read more

I came here the other night because the staff at the Fairfield Inn just down the street recommended it to me. I have to say, it was not a bad suggestion. Any place that has a bar that serves Hendrick's Gin is already a good choice in my book. The mushroom and caramelized onion pizza that I had was good. I personally feel that all pizza should have a slightly browned cheese top. This one, the cheese was all white, yes the crust was done correctly for a skinny little thin crust, but the cheese was not what it should have been. I am a big pizza fan, and I have had New York slices that were down better and faster than here. To be honest, it's the fact that I was able to have a Hendrick's and Tonic with Cucumber here that keeps the rating above a 2. The Cucumber is so much better than a lime with Hendricks. read more

It was a wonderful dining experience at Soho's Italian restaurant. Their minestrone soup was the best I have ever eaten at any Italian restaurant. We were greeted by the owner and made to feel like a valued customer. It was it quaint setting in a refurbished Warehouse District in downtown Charleston West Virginia. Their spaghetti and meatballs we were fantastic. The marinara sauce was perfect. The meatballs had a little zest to them and you received a very plentiful portion. The food is always very good, bordering on excellent. Sometimes I feel they are trying a bit too hard, loading things down with sauces and occasionally spoiling the presentation as a result. Being at the Capital Market, one would expect more farm-fresh type ingredients and simple gourmet dishes that let the ingredients speak for themselves without help from remoulades, coulis, and heavy tomato sauces. The atmosphere is extremely noisy when the place is crowded, which is just about every dinner service. The spring and summer are an excellent time to sit outside, which brings a quieter atmosphere but sometimes slower service. Despite all that, it's still one of my favorite places to eat. read more

It's served on a bed of vegetables and polenta which are equally wonderful.
