Butter in the fajitas... I came here because of the outdated food prices on yelps photos of an old menu. So I was kinda annoyed to see the prices were much higher than shown. But I stayed and ate. Big mistake. I ordered carne asada fajitas ($20) and a single carne asada taco. This was the blandest sizzling plate of meat I have ever eaten. The dominate smell coming from the unseasoned plated of meat, onion, and peppers, was BUTTER. That's right... the fajitas smelled and tasted like butter! I had not noticed when I walked in but literally every single customer in the place was a senior citizen of the white complexion. The carbs asada taco I ordered was made of un seasoned beef also! The spiciest and most flavorful thing I was served that day was a Coke in a glass bottle. Think about that for a moment. If I had to sum up what I ate earlier tonight I would have to say that I paid $24 + tip to eat at an old folks homes cafeteria. If you are not from this town and are passing through do not expect anything authentic or anything passable as Mexican food. Butter in the fajitas... Though I was stung by another reviewer who stated that Cottage Grove is in the middle of nowhere I am happy that they put in the effort to find Sol Azteca. It is the best of all the Mexican restaurants in the Grove and surrounding areas. The interior is bright, very spacious, quiet, and clean. The ceilings are high, there's a giant fountain on the middle of the dining area, the skylights are helpful during Oregon gloom, and there are separate rooms for large gatherings. The staff is always cheerful and greet you with a smile. I typically order their beef or pork dishes and they are always delicious. I do go through several dishes of the salsa and chips while perusing the menu. And I usually take home a container of their salsa. Yes, the refried beans are a bit runny but they're very tasty and do have a nice texture. The shredded beef is great as is their carnitas. I am grateful that this is a family retsaurant that survived Covid and I wish them much happiness and success. You too can be happy by eating there. Excellent service, great authentic ambiance, great selection of options on the menu and they all look really good. Maybe I picked something they're not great at. The fajita combo lacked flavor or taste. It seems the chicken, steak and shrimp are precooked, they freshly sautéed the bell peppers only, warmed up the meat and mixed it in with the fresh cooked bell peppers. The meat didn't taste freshly cooked at all, as though it had been cooked/grilled the day before. No seasoning on any of the meats either, it was very bland. I had one bite of the steak and chicken and only a the few shrimps with the side of beans, guacamole and cheese it came with. I would not order the fajitas again. read more

Our dinner was served incredibly fast - within 7-10 minutes... we had the steak fajitas and the pollo la crema.... The presentation was underwhelming being a small portion that matches the reasonable price. We typically eat at El Tapatio so that is our comparison. The salsa was delicious and fresh. * the Hab sauce a standout * I could tell right away the meat was seared earlier in the day and finished by steaming it with the veg served with the dish. That said it was missing that seared flavor in lieu of being steam cooked. I liked the way the cook prepared the side mushrooms but not the green onions (Ive had cooked green onions in the past but didn't anticipate getting them when asking for green onions); they turned out super chewy and inedible. The cocktail was "delectable" according to my better half. Portion size was smaller than usual and spice level was very moderate in fact hardly noticeable. If there is one thing Cottage Grove has, it is plenty of Mexican food choices. This is by far my favorite in town not only for the food but for the price. You will pay twice as much elsewhere in town and the food here is superior. The restaurant itself is large and nicely decorated. Staff is friendly and attentive. I have never seen this place very busy and I believe the location is part of that, with not being in a main drag area. My hope is people start taking notice of just how great this place is and that it really is more bang for your buck! ***update*** We were worried this little place would not make it through Covid as it has been so hard on small town businesses. Very comfortable ambience, not formal, not overly casual, just nice. The people are friendly and quite attentive. The fountain is a nice addition. I had the Carne Asada burrito smothered in enchilada sauce, with a side of rice and beans (in addition to the rice and beans inside the burrito). My particular 'modus operandi' is to slice up the burrito and mix it altogether with the rice and beans. "Heaven on a plate!" I can't remember what my wife had, some kind of creamy chicken enchilada accompanied by a sangria. She loved it. Sol Azteca is a little east of the freeway (Exit 174), away from the fast food area and past the Walmart hubbub. The pace is more relaxed and you don't feel rushed. I think if they could find a way to incorporate a patio area, it would make for an absolutely perfect summer evening. They are definitely family friendly, and will not break your pocketbook. This place is amazing. We lived here before but moved 3 years ago so we hadn't got to try this place until tonight. It was so great. Service was great and prompt, food was delicious, and margaritas were perfect! We noticed on the table a note that said they had green salsa upon request so we asked for it as well as the standard red... so glad we did. It was the best green salsa I've ever had. I got Tacos al Carbon for dinner. Super yummy. It hit the spot. The meat was tender and flavorful and the side of guac it came was was a nice touch. Beans and rice were on point. The best overall package and dining experience for Mexican food I've had since visiting Mexico. The interior space is festive and bright, the Chips and Salsa was fresh and delicious as was the horchata. I had the Fajita which is usually $15+ but only $9.00 here. Portion was a little smaller than everywhere else, but still left full. Everywhere else is usually too much food. I'd rather pay less for a sufficient portion than too much for more than I can eat. Came here while on a road trip, the staff was very nice and helpful. They have plenty of vegetarian options or options that can be veganized. The decor was really impressive, not cheap looking like other mexican resturaunts ive been to.
