The inside was decorated with pink low lighting and I'm not sure if that is a normal thing or if it was special for the weekend but it felt like a weird attempt at trying to make it fancy inside. We also got the potato taco bites, they were pretty good but I don't think I would order them again. My margarita was not the best I've ever had. Back in high school there was a bunch of shady vaguely ethnic individuals (Armenian if I had to guess based off the tropes from the TV show Family Guy) operating some sort of restaurant here called like "Aladdin's shack". Wow; man, horribly expensive and I was the only person that probably ever ate there. The guys watched me the entire time and they had very expensive cars parked outside it felt very strange and I never told a soul because it shook my character so deeply. I created a Yelp review of this restaurant a year ago. You know how things can change . What once was a 5 star spot drops to a 2 or 3. Maybe a new owner or new chef or something. I am happy to say, these folks still rock! Alejandro has left, but his sister Liz is a gem. My husband loves the carne asado and his dish was just what he expected. I really like their "street " tacos which are much more than the street ones. This time I had the pork with its adobada marinade . I also had roasted chicken with nicely cooked pasilla chiles complimented with small chunks of pineapple. Yummy! There's more to each dish - cilantro and the like - and all the flavors blend so nicely. Their house salsa with chips is a very nice starter. And the margaritas are freshly made rounding out a great meal. Two photos attached with one being an empty plate, just cannot seem to remember to take the before photo!!! I may have mentioned this in a previous review, and I think it bears repeating. We popped into 1960 Cocina last night (Thursday) and--just before we left--Jean and I were allowed to go into the kitchen to say hello to the matriarch, the chef, the heart and soul of the establishment. As far as I was concerned, we may have well had just met Emeril. Liz is one of the servers--sister of our friend Alejandro, who has moved up to Portland--who also did some cooking during Covid). Our server was Carmen, is Liz's daughter. So that's three generations working in there. She was swell. I introduced Jean and myself to her and she said, "I think I've heard about you." Very possible, because I was a well-informed, rapid FAN of the place from day one. I wrote one of the first two or three reviews on Yelp right after 1960 Cocina opened. We had enjoyed a *queso chorizo Fundido* (served with perfect homemade tortillas) and a large Chile Relleno, which comes with a side of rice, a mild roja sauce **on the side** (a great idea) and a large deep fried, jalapeño with frijoles inside. For me, Chile Rellonos are the holy Grail. Having traveled across the southwest every summer, and living just outside of West LA, my family had acquired a taste (and a very high standard) for rellenos. I've found. The relleno we had last night was every bit as good as the one that we were served on our first visit. A flavor-packed poblano pepper, not very spicy, filled with a meltable cheese and covered with a light crust. You know how most places use a lot of batter and then smother the relleno in sauce. This is not that. We also ordered a large bowl of chips and - instead of house salsa - any sort of variety pack of salsas they could offer us. They brought us four flavors, one of which was thick and dark, dark red. It was made from. _____ peppers and - as they all warned us - it was pretty damn spicy. We had the house margaritas upgraded with top shelf tequila, and they were perfect as well. I used to bring them a jar of homemade salsa every summer. Alejandro said they generally opened and consumed it as soon as they got it home. Some years have been better than others, but this (2024) was a good year for salsa, so I've got to run a jar over tomorrow. In closing, this is a family run, everything homemade, Mexican restaurant that will not appeal to folks whose idea of a great Mexican meal is a couple of cheesy enchiladas with large helpings of rice and beans. And endless free salsa and chips. Yes, 1960 Cocina is a bit spendy. But do yourself a favor and take someone you love -- and who also loves great, authentic Mexican food--share dishes, "family style" and enjoy yourselves. And take small bites. There was one man serving, bussing and taking care of customers and all tables were taken on a Thursday evening. He did a great job! The food was very bland in my opinion. This place offers more traditional Mexican food without being super heavy. We ordered a couple of appetizers including the potato hard shell tacos, the "forget the pico" and the pickled carrot salsa--I'd especially recommend the potato tacos and "forget the pico." We also ordered a few tacos including the adobada and asada tacos, which were probably the best ones. Their handmade corn tortillas are made to order and they are super fresh, you will be ruined to eat any store bought corn tortillas after trying these. We also ordered a couple of the margaritas--the Cadillac and the grapefruit. Both were good although I wish they had a bit more lime, but I do prefer my margaritas to be super citrusy. My only other feedback is I could have used a wee bit more salt on my food, but that could also be my own taste preference. I really do recommend stopping in! There are other places I will eat Mexican food, but no other places I would recommend to someone else. (If that makes sense). The food is all delicious. The atmosphere is small, clean, and unassuming. The service is casual but good (sometimes slow on a busy night, but worth it). Drinks are strong (thumbs up). House salsa is so yummy. First, an update to my prior review -- They now have margaritas (regular & pineapple) I came in for a late lunch and it was a great experience. 2 tacos and a side of pinto beans cost about $10 and made a filling lunch. The chicken taco had small strips of roasted pineapple and went beautifully with the side of green salsa. The pork adobada taco was stellar and packed some serious heat, along with roasted pineapple as well. I would also recommend their hibiscus agua fresca, a bit sweeter than I expected but very flavorful. And nicely priced at $2.40. Next time I'll try the cucumber & mint. Also the atmosphere is much improved since the last visit. Natural lighting was nice and I appreciated the Mexican music. read more

I felt underwhelmed, and here's why. I came here with my wife and three kids. Honestly, was feigning for some Mexican food and this place seemed like it'd hit the spot. We arrived and found as we sat down that it was a smaller restaurant and definitely had that date-night vibe. Kids definitely didn't fit in there. So sorry about that 1960. Service was different. They're wearing masks and both the male and female who were (the only ones) walking around were very soft spoken. The female especially. They are also not very attentive. I had to ask for another carafe of water. I overheard the couple near us getting a little frustrated too. After a slight wait, one of them came up and brought up utensils piled up on top of paper napkins and dropped them on the table. I sort of snickered because the menu entrees are $20-$30 and the utensils are diner-style with cheap paper napkins. Are they going for fancy or not? So anyway, no chips or salsa come out. That costs $7. Chips and a big serving of guacamole is $9. Honestly, really good salsa and guacamole. Chips were good too. Main dishes. They have a good variety. Remember, this is an expensive place with cheap flare, so you're getting smaller portions. Also, there's no refills, unless it's water. I got the kids the quesadilla and the crunch tacos. The quesadilla looked good. Plenty of cheese and the kids liked them. The tacos weren't a favorite of theirs. I tried one and thought it lacked something. It was just a little bland and dry. I had the Enchiladas Pollo. I was sort of expecting a larger plate, but got a small one with one small enchilada and a spoonful of rice and small plate of beans. Enchilada was pretty good. A bit spicy, but had good flavor and they didn't skimp on the chicken at all. Rice was VERY bland. My wife had the bean soup and she said she enjoyed it. She also got a hibiscus margarita. Ascetically, it looked great and my wife said it tasted really good, BUT, she said she couldn't taste the tequila in it at all. Post dinner she reported no buzz, so that was a bummer. Over all, the experience fell short. If you looked at the experience on a chart, there's highs and lows. So, highs: food was tasty, nice ambiance for a date-night. This would be a great spot for a date night, it's intimate with great lighting and good background music. The service was attentive and the servers were kind. My favorite part of the dish I ordered was the olas (shrimp and chipotle) taco. The shrimp was fried to a golden crisp and the sauce had a ton of flavor. It is on the spicier side so be prepared for that. Everything else was just "okay" and priced fairly high. It really seemed that the house salsa was the Pace salsa from the grocery store. The horchata was a bit watered down with a bunch of mix at the bottom, and the adobada had a decent flavor profile but it was pretty dry. We ordered the flauta bites, recommended by our server. They were fresh and presented well but weren't anything special. I've been meaning to try this place for a while now and finally made it for Cinco de Mayo. While the food and drinks were VERY good, the service was slower (sat outside). That's not to say it was bad however if you're in a hurry or rush this may not be the place. Think more of a European dinner. Sit, relax, and take your time. The margaritas were great. I had one of their house ones and then a pineapple. The house marg was great. It wasn't overly sweet which I really enjoyed. While both were good, it's important to note they were priced on the high-ish side (over $10) but I thought they were well worth the price! I had tried a couple of apps including a variety of pickled items (carrots, jalapeños, etc.) and their elite (street corn). The street corn was awesome and I'd highly recommend that. I finished off the meal with a number of tacos including their adobada, al vapor, and asada. The adobada and asada were phenomenal however the al vapor was very dry. Definitely give this place a try! Parking can be a bit of a nightmare with its small lot but there is usually plenty of street parking around the area. This is a great family-run place and the other reviews speak for themselves!
