This is my type of place. My husband and I went for happy hour yesterday. We got there at 5:30 or so and were delighted that everyone else there was our age. I'm sure the place fills up with the young'uns later in the evening. I ordered a cocktail off their list and honestly I didn't like it too much. It was like it was missing an ingredient and so it wasn't sweet at all. My husband tried a sip and noted the same thing. But since we were enjoying ourselves and talking to the bartender, I did not mind that it wasn't perfectly mixed. For my second drink I got smart and engaged the friendly bartender in some discussion about what house-made liquors they currently had. He suggested the black tea rum, which sounded great to me. So he made me an "iced tea lemonade" that was one of the best cocktails I've ever had. The bill was $15 for my two cocktails, my husband's beer, and a dish of nuts. Wow! I could see the two cocktails easily being $15, but they were just $5 each! I'm definitely going back. Again. And again. And again. read more

I just moved to the area and am better for it. Sun Liquor offers perfect drinks without the fluff and all of the flavor. Their decor is clean and inviting, no big-ass TVs or loud drum and bass electronica. The bartenders are super friendly and are happy to serve. They play damn awesome music all of the time. It's comfortable and I see myself at Sun a couple times a week. Lastly, why do people bitch about parking on Capitol Hill? Announced to the bartender that I wanted "something spicy". He frowned for a moment and said "Normally I'd make you a Hot Charlotte, but we're out of one of the ingredients." He thought about it for a second, then made me a Michelada - Negra Modelo, lime, tabasco and some other spicy things. Tasty! However, people saying that you can bring pizza from nextdoor inside are not accurate. I wasn't allowed to bring my pizza in. However, since it's summer, chairs and tables are set up outside and I just ate it there. read more

You know, the good thing about Sun Liquor is that it is stumbling distance from my friend's apartment. The very good thing is that the stumble is downhill. Sun Liquor, formally (apparently, or so the bartender told us Monday night) both a laundromat and a grocery store (see the pictures in the right hand bathroom to prove it) Is a cozy little bar with table seating to accompany it. They are open every night, and have a nice range of specialty drinks to sample, along with a full bar with many different kinds of poison to tickle your fancy and your liver. The place is also gorgeously decorated, with this very "industrial vintage orient" look to it. I covet their ceiling lights so bad, and the mural on the back wall is nothing short of gorgeous. Monday night was very quiet, with no more than 8 patrons in the bar the whole time we were there. However, it was rediculously loud in the bar, due to the 'super-hip' music that our bartender was playing. He also fell into the painfully hip category, but that is apparently very common on Capitol Hill, according to my friend. We ordered a Mai Tai, and a Spanish Coffee, and the downside of the Spanish Coffee was that I was too far away to watch him set the sucker on fire. He also didn' t whip the cream enough for the drink, but he was so upset about it, that I didn't give him grief. This guy took his mixing VERY seriously, and it totally showed in the quality of his drinks. The Mai Tai was possibly one of the best drinks I have ever had. One of the definite reasons that this is the case is that they fresh squeeze the fruit juice for every single drink. I find that to be quite impressive. The fruit that they garnish their drinks with is also very tasty. After downing my Spanish Coffee and another mixed drink on the menu (something with gin and champagne), he brings over some falernum that he was making, and since I actually knew what it was, he fixed us all a rum-based drink with the falernum in it, and that was dee-lish as well. He was very polite about announcing last call, and was upfront with us without being rude about having to finish our drinks before 2am. We paid, and stumbled back down the hill to my friend's place. Minus one star for the over-hipness of the place, along with the semi-bitchiness of the door girl a couple of nights previous. I will totally return to Sun Liquor when I venture back to Seattle. read more

This is one of my favorite places in Seattle. Its cozy, the cocktails are out of this world and the bartenders are extremely personable. This has to be one of the best places for cocktails on Capital Hill. **** UPDATE***** This place has become my spot in Seattle, I am here more often then any where else. All the bartenders are amazing and provide great suggestions if you are looking to broaden your knowledge and familiarity of classic cocktails. Some of my personal favorites are Moscow Mules, French 75s, Old Cubans, Ritz, the house Sangria, and pretty much anything involving tequila or champagne. read more

Well, I do like this spot a lot, but but but!!! you have to learn to be nice even when you've got an exceptionally larger crowd occupying the place. It is not ok to get snippy and mean to faithful patrons just because you're stressing out and cracking under the pressure. Being a doorman/bouncer does not mean you get to be a jerk and get away with it. You're repping the entire venue, and should do your best to put on your best customer service hat to people you are turning away because of maxed capacity. These are people that won't get to appreciate and savor the fine scratch bar drinks, rich rums, and pleasant company inside the bar, so the only impression they will have is of the ugly rude doorman. I ordered a 7 and coke and got a Coke and Sevenup. How bizarre. I guess Summit doesn't stock Seagrams Seven either, so maybe it's an anti-canadian neighborhood or something. They seem to be well known for making crazy ass fancy drinks though, so if you've got a favorite rarity this might be the place to try to order it. It is a fancy place inside. If you're less pretentious and more into drinking, it's only a couple doors from Summit Public House so going here won't make a night a failure. read more

They have a special aged eggnog on Christmas and Christmas Eve! I stood in line for an hour to get in on Christmas Eve. As tasty as it was, was there supposed to be alcohol in it? I didn't taste any and didn't feel it. I'm not upset about that, since it was some of the creamiest, smoothest eggnog I've ever come across, but for a $11 drink, I'd expect some alcohol to be in it. They don't have food, at least not when I went, so get your noms somewhere else. Top Pot doughnuts is next door, as is Single Shot, and it's a short walk to Broadway where there are plenty of other food establishments. It's a small space, and didn't realize it, but it's Hawaiian themed. Love the tiki bars. Don't bring a big group, most tables are 2 to 4 seats, and you won't have much space to maneuver around anyway. read more

First and foremost, great drinks. Up there with the best I've had at any bar in Seattle. The bartenders really know what they're doing and crank out sophisticated cocktails with great ingredients. The space is dark and cozy, definitely crowded, but I love the atmosphere. Made with fresh, pressed before your eyes juice and a great bartender, the ambience of Sun Liquor is 2 parts neighborhood bar to one part speakeasy. One of my favorite happy hour spots on a relaxed, shady street. No frills, no airs, and no rat-race attempt at finding out who's who. Just go! I know everyone loves Sun Liquor and my underwhelming review won't be popular. I haven't ever had a particularly bad experience here; I haven't had to stand outside waiting to get in, and never had a bad drink. It's just that I feel like it's kind of a pretentious place, and doesn't have the relaxing feel I would want for my neighborhood bar. More often than not, the bar seems to be full of the Capitol Hill pseudo-intellectuals who are convinced they're smarter and more sophisticated than you. The bartender is nice and always remembers my drink throughout the night which is impressive. Also, for as much detail as they give the drinks (fresh fruit, crushed ice, etc.), they are able to serve drinks fairly quickly and efficiently. I really can't figure out the direction of the decor -- it's kind of like an island theme I think but it doesn't quite gel and sort of undermines any kind of "vibe" in the place. It's an OK place to meet up with one or two friends but once your group starts getting bigger, you might have a hard time finding a table or room at the bar, especially on the weekends. And of course -- parking is basically impossible to find and so this may limit your trips here with your friends that don't live on the Hill. read more

I went there recently for drinks; the cocktail list was interesting, the bartender gave me great advice, the drinks were delicious, and I enjoyed the ambience (low lighting, big wooden bar, warm atmosphere). Went here for happy hour - the place was pretty empty (another couple and one other guy) so it was pretty quiet. That was pretty early though so I'm sure it gets busier later in the night. Adorable little place with a list of artisan cocktails to knock your socks off. I prefer the Scarlet Lady (gin, lemon juice, HOUSE-MADE grenadine, & champagne), but my friends sampled everything from the Pimm's Cup to the Kentucky Cardinal (bourbon, lillet, house-made pineapple sage shrub & peychaud's bitters). In case you can't tell, Sun Liquor makes their own bitters. Just look in the glass refrigerator in the middle, behind the bar. You'll see a bunch of little bottles that look like potions and no doubt contain liquids that are mysteriously delicious as anything a witch or wizard might whip up. My friends and I had a group of 9 or 10 and managed to snag a bunch of little tables in one corner, but we were lucky. This is a place meant for smaller groups...like a romantic one-on-one. read more

Crowded all the time, there is a REASON for that!! They're drinks are hard and to the core/ If they had a secret back room for mafia members, I wouldn't be all too amazed. It's just one of those dim bars you see in German films and perhaps will see someone from "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" movie. Although not a fan of blue cheese, their blue cheese and bacon burger is pretty good. The most impressive trait about this bar is that they made their own bitters. They are all situated at the back of the bar. I have tried and few and to be honest, they taste like any other I've tasted. Again, like The Lookout, it is hidden away from the main bars so there is less of a crowd, but by word of mouth, this is a commonly known bar that people enjoy. read more

When you're in the industry, not only is it annoying to be in a bar when you're not working, but it's rare to be impressed by anything cocktail related when you're that good of a bartender (and no, he's not reading this). A chance to traipse through the NW neighborhood of Cap Hill and find yourself at a great 'stab with a unique ambiance and some swell staff. The decor is funky with an awesome retro back bar and an AWESOME chiller. Instant gratification is for suckas. I sat at the bar here last night and drank a Sidecar with an old friend. I enjoyed the aroma of citrus when the bartender (who, maybe I should call a mixologist?) juiced fruit and added it to the magic he was shaking up. I heard a woman say, "It's like, taking him 10 minutes to make that drink." Personally, I prefer waiting an extra minute or five if it means the drink turns out to be an olfactory experience that makes me think, "is there a word for people who have food fetishes? If there is, this place should be where they have their weekly meetings." If I were going to be in Seattle longer, I'd go back here and challenge myself to try every single one of their mixers. They all looked THAT good. Worth blacking out for, sure. In the name of science, you know. For the same reason that I totally respect baristas who really know what they're doing, I appreciated the dude behind the bar and how he crafted drink after drink. He seemed to take pride in, and want to make sure each was right (stuck straws in everything and did a little taster...poor environment, always getting beat up by the food industry...and everybody else). I like that this place is small and dark. I like that there are whole oranges sitting on the bar and fresh mint hangs out in a pint glass, all waiting until it's their turn for party time in a glass. I like that when my friend asked me if I wanted to go to Sun Liquor, I at first thought he was suggesting we hit up a liquor mart and not an actual bar. I like being confused. Hands down best drinks in town! I forget the amazing bartender's name but he is amazing! He reminds me of the movie Snatch when scenes speed up uber fast; this is the way he makes drinks. I've been distracted by him from many conversations I've had just to watch what he's doing. Fresh squeezed juice, excellent precision when it comes to pouring, TASTY!, and just a really chill yet classy atmosphere. If you're not sure what you want, don't worry, this guy will make you something that you never had, but all the sudden love! I usually order the blood and sand. Good atmosphere for a date. It's a little off the main drag so street parking was easy to find. All the juices for our drinks were fresh squeezed and the mai tais and De Soto's were divine! I would recommend more complicated drinks in the winter. I had a screwdriver and because the oranges were a bit out of season it ended up being somewhat sharp and sour. read more

Sun Liquor is the perfect antidote to the Pike/Pine B.S.-fest. It's like the anti-Barça. That said, it's more of Yin and Yang thing. Sometimes you want the drunken Bellevue kids in North Face stumbling through the streets, sometimes you don't. When you don't, you have to schlep away from all the activity to Sun Liquor and indulge yourself in this dark Oriental bar. You can close your eyes and imagine old Chinese men smoking opium in the back. I kid, but only slightly because the post-war Oriental craze in the U.S. still weirds me out. Nevertheless the décor is pretty nice. I mean, it's a pretty small place so there's not that much of it. The drinks are good if expensive. Some day I will get over it but I still freak out that these drinks are like 1.5 minimum wage hours of scrubbing floors. The bartender that was there last time gave us some nice lessons on what kind of random distilled plants go into what cocktail etc. This is a really solid, neighborhood-y, comfy, great for rainy nights kind of place.
