The customer service here is absolutely horrendous. The staff treat the customers as if they are bothersome and are being done a favor by being allowed to eat there. In general the staff seemed overworked, tired and stressed out never a good combination for people handling your food. The taco Tuesdays is a joke they nickel and dime you for every little add-on. I recently ate here and the food was great. My favorite part of my meal was the two churros with chocolate sauce. I haven't had a churro in a while but I was eager to try it again, and it delivered. There wasn't too much seasoning on the churros and they weren't messy. Very long and crispy. The chicken and cheese quesadilla tasted wonderful. Decent prices, I would eat here again. read more

I placed a to go order at 5:49 pm on Sunday, September 3. The tracker said my order would be ready at 6:19. I entered the restaurant at 6:19 pm and my order had yet to be started. There was only one customer in the restaurant who's order hadn't been started yet. The employee told me to come back in 8 minutes. I returned and my order still hadn't been completed. Meanwhile another walk in customer ordered while I was there and their food order was completed. I asked for a beverage to be compensated for the inconvenience and the employee told me that she could ring me up to pay for a drink. There was no apology or sense of urgency. I finally walked out of the restaurant at 6:36 pm. I was better off walking into the restaurant instead of ordering ahead. I've supported this restaurant too many times and spend my hard earned money to be treated like my time and money don't matter. read more

One star because I ordered two breakfast plates with turkey bacon! We can not have not and will nvr eat pork bacon! After $20 and an hour wait I was highly disappointed when I can't even eat anything on the plate as it has been contaminated! My friend and I stopped by for a quick drink at the bar, and I was pleasantly surprised by the cozy and quaint yet vibrant atmosphere of the restaurant. Downstairs is a taqueria and upstairs is a more full service restaurant and bar. The vibe is casual, cozy, and festive. It seemed like a cool spot to hang out with friends over some good food and/or drinks! We sat upstairs at the bar, and we just chatted. We both ordered pretty standard drinks: a margarita for my friend and a Corona for myself. The drinks were great and the lady bartending was friendly and quick with service. Honestly i wish they had more sol mexican restaurants around dc and in maryland. This is like a better version of chipotle, and the food tastes amazing. I have never had a bad meal from this restaurant. All of the ingredients always taste so fresh, especially the cilantro in my bowls. The portions for the price are beyond fair and I rarely finish my meals because there's just so much. I prefer the bowls over the burritos, just because the flavor comes out better when it isn't wrapped in tortilla. You also absolutely cannot beat their family meal. My partner had lunch today. Simple, beans and rice with chicken and cheese. Shortly after I had to call paramedics who suggested she go to the hospital for food poisoning. When I called to inform the manager, I was told they were in a meeting...at 9:30pm on a Saturday. Even when I stated it was an emergency and that those items should be removed and investigated. By far, the best fish tacos I've ever eaten. They have a friendly, efficient staff and if you're in the mood, they have strong, tasty margheritas. You won't be disappointed by the food, the atmosphere, however is very informal and casual. The have benches and tables which is fine when it's not crowded, but less so when it's busy. SOL's food truck is 5/5 - the "real" restaurant is at best, a 3/5. I've gone to SOL many times (via their food truck) because they set up shop near my job quite frequently. I am serious Mexican food lover, and they provide seriously delicious, fresh, authentic Mexican food. What they don't provide, at least based on my own experience, is consistency. Two and a half stars after our $7 @solmexicangrill lunches gave us healthy S#!%s Out Later. ;) Got a carnitas bowl with everything but beans, and sampled my coworker's more conservative steak bowl. The quality of meats aren't as good as Chipotle but the overall food volume is better. I like my pulled pork somewhat moist and tender, not so dry and stringy. The beef was also a bit on the tougher side. Rice was okay, I think Chipotle wins on that ingredient as well. Lettuce, corn, and pico de gallo all quite fresh; black beans surprisingly decent considering I tend to be biased against them. Both red and green salsas pack just the right balance of heat and flavor for me, which is a nice switch from using the Chipotle tabasco. I'll probably hit them up again to try their chicken and guacamole, even if their service attitude is questionable. read more

I felt like having me some Mexi Can for lunch. Took a quick look at my food truck webpage and there it was- SOL Mexican roach coach pulling up to L'enfant plaza! I was one of the first ones in line. Ordered the burrito with carnitas (shredded pork booty). Just like Chipotle. When they asked me what I wanted to fill it with, I got the beans, rice, lettuce, sour cream, guacamole, pico de gallo, cheese and red and green sauces. The read and green sauces I think are more a New Mexican thing (as in the state). And let me talk briefly about Pico de Gallo (Pee-ko de Gah-yo). Here in DC and everywhere else but Texas, it's called SALSA. If you take, tomatoes, peppers, onions, maybe even cilantro, chop them up and mix them together, it's SALSA. I don't care what anybody says dammit! The size of the burrito is slightly smaller than what you get at Chipotle and they didn't give as much meat. Ok, now that I got that off of my chest let me talk about the taste. All the components went together wonderfully. The salsas were not as spicy as I like them to be, but looking at it from a demographic point of view, selling burritos at L'enfant plaza, from a little truck with not much space, and having all kinds of different people showing up, then it probably shouldn' t be too spicy if you want them coming back. Now if I was to sell some burritos at let's say - a construction site or close to a home depot, THEN I would pack in the capsicum and burn some tastbuds! They packed it somewhat tight, but juices were spilling out and it got a little messy. That's okay though. That's what forks are for. It was a very good meal. It didn't even upset my tummy. If you like chipotle then you'd like this truck. Especially since Mexican food is hard to come by around L'enfant plaza. Unless you want to go to the American Indian museum and spend $20 on a meal. If you come here looking for amazing Mexican food, you're s.o.l. The tortillas are kind of dry, the fillings are super duper bland (at least the veggie ones are), and my biggest gripe with the food is it's not served piping hot. I should not step away from the register to eat only to unwrap a lukewarm burrito (seriously, the cheese wasn't even slightly melted!). The register is a mess too - the fact that they can't keep track of their ever-growing mound of receipts makes me think there's more disorganization behind the scenes. Overall, there are plenty of other non-Mexican places to hit up on H Street; don't make this one of them. read more

Worst service I have ever had. On top of that, overpriced Mexican food. Been wanting to try this place for a while and got the chance when it was on livingsocial. My boyfriend and I went upstairs for dine in. There was no greeter, the bartender told us to sit wherever, so we picked a 2 person table in the back corner. 10 minutes later we were given water and menus. Another 10 minutes and we got chips/salsa and silverware. Another 10 minutes and finally we got to put in our order. A different waitress/busser comes by and asks us what we ordered again, so we repeat the order. Two minutes later, she comes back, this time with a pen and paper and writes our order down for the third time - tamale for appetizer, chile rellano for appetizer, steak fajita and seafood enchilada for entrees. The food comes out and it's only the steak fajita... They ask us to move to another table for more space to accommodate all the dishes we order, so we obediently picked up our napkins, waters, silverware and move. They drop the steak fajita off - overcooked pieces of beef and raw peppers that were not sizzling at all when brought out (see picture)- and leave. Another waiter comes to comment "oh, the appetizers are suppose to come out before the entrees, aren't they?" I don't know, waiter, you tell me. The rest of the food comes after I'm halfway done with my fajitas. My boyfriend who ordered seafood enchiladas got a veggie enchilada so he sent it back. A couple minutes later, he gets the new dish and it's ANOTHER veggie enchilada... I've never been to a restaurant that gets your order wrong twice in a row.. See pictures but the seafood enchilada were bland and sparsely filled with seafood. The tamale was all corn meal. The food was mediocre at best and absolutely overpriced for what it was. When it was time for the bill, I gave my waitress the livingsocial coupon and she was not thrilled about it nor did she know what to do with it so she takes my phone back to the bar. She comes back with the final bill and snarkily comments, "Well, looks like you got a free meal" ...what? no I didn't, do you know how livingsocial deals work? I already paid for the deal. I slipped and fell on water dripping from the ceiling at this restaurant, there was no wet floor sign and after I fell and hit my head an employee told me "you should have watched out". The next day I went to the hospital and found out I have a concussion and a sprain in my back. I've called the store multiple times and they have ignored my calls, I also went back to the restaurant to speak to one of the employees and they all claimed that they didn't speak English. read more

Wanted a margarita so I was upstairs :) and my drink was strong and fine, not too much sour mix, $5 happy-hour price was cheep! Also has PBR on tap for the hipster in you. Good low-key place, I'm a fan. Very good salsa here, flecks of cilantro and mild heat. House-made chips are thick yet crisp, just enough salt, hard not to ruin your appetite! And they're free too, sweet. Elotes loco is corn on the cob that's been sprinkled with crumbled cotija cheese, then slathered in chipotle dressing with fresh chopped cilantro. Of course a total disaster to eat, it's everywhere on your face and hands but worth it! $4 Chile relleno excellent but unlike every chile relleno I've ever had. This one was stuffed with ground chorizo, covered in queso sauce and not in the slightest bit deep fried, no egg batter! $7 Tamale app was slightly disheveled and stuffed with chicken, olive *with* pit as it should, and some other random whole veg, plus small sides of pico de gallo, guacamole and sour cream -- a beautiful plate for just $4, a steal. Vegetarian rating: 2.5 stars, choose from veg enchiladas, veg burrito and veggie fajitas. Every soup and salad has animal protein, but several apps don't including corn on the cob and guac. Of course chips and salsa. Upstairs also has a small outdoor patio, don't miss dining under the stars here on a fine evening. This is a review for the food truck: This is "el gringo" Mexican food... It was horrible. The tacos are made with flour tortillas, and they stuff their tacos with rice and lettuce...No cilanto. When is a good time for SOL? Pretty much anytime. Cheat meal day? SOL. Other half is out of town and cooking for one sounds lame? SOL. Looking for munchies? SOL. Desperate for cheap cheese-filled thrills? SOL. You're down to your last $10 and need at least 2 meals worth of food? SOL. There's 2 SOL dining experiences depending on what you're looking for. I typically go to the downstairs, which is kind of like a Chipotle set up with burritos, bowls, quesadillas, etc. The upstairs is a little nicer with some more traditional options and a full bar. First the downstairs. I typically hit SOL on the weekend, so I'm not familiar with the ultra popular taco Tuesday deal, but several friends hit it weekly. My go to is a bowl with some combo of chicken/chorizo (so good)/steak. The carnitas and barbacoa are both good as well. Don't skip the red and green salsas/sauces in the squeeze bottles. I usually can't resist ordering chips and queso as well. It amounts to a mountain of food that can easily be stretched into 2 meals if you have the type of self discipline that I lack. A couple of slight negatives. The line can be medium long and the food isn't prepared at Chipotle like speeds, so it can take a little bit (10-15 minutes). They used to accept phone orders, but stopped after people didn't show up to claim their food (who are these people?). It doesn't bother me, but sometimes my wife finds the food a little salty. It does drive me a little crazy when the line is long and they continue to accept uber orders that ends up slowing the in-store line down to a crawl. The upstairs used to have a nice quasi-divey quality to it. They recently redid the menu and kind of "upscaled" everything. Personally I preferred the old ways where you could get a tub of queso with chorizo, quesadillas and fajitas. You can still get fajitas (and I think quesadillas), but the attempt at refining the food takes some of the charm away for me. The margaritas are good and there's always a few quality beers on tap. read more

Terrible customer service! We came here early on a Saturday and it wasn't that busy so you would think the customer service would be great. Nope! When we first sat down the table was dirty so we asked the waitress if she could clean it for us. So she got a rag and just left it on the table...I guess we were supposed to do it ourselves :( then when she finally decided to introduce herself we asked her some questions about the menu and she wasn't very pleasant or knowledgeable about the menu. Smhhhh Anyway on to the food. The best part of the meal were the chips and salsa. The chips were warm and the salsa was tasty. On to the entree...I had the shrimp tacos w/Mexican rice and black beans. Both the rice and beans were lukewarm and they weren't anything amazing. As for my shrimp tacos, the shrimp was dry and bland. I had to add some of my salsa for some flavor. Oh, I also ordered a passion fruit margarita which was delicious. I would definitely order the drink again even though it didn't come in a traditional margarita class...at a Mexican restaurant smhhh. 3-3.5 stars. Went here for a break from the excellent Pedro & Vinny's truck and had the three taco meal, one pork, one beef, and one chicken. The GF had the veggie burrito. It was.....pretty good. The meat was tender and well seasoned. The sauces, however, were disappointing--just heat without much flavor. We both missed the P&V salsa but thought that the corn and pico de gallo were both nice touches. Also, neither meal was, for $0.50 more than P&V, nearly as much food as what P&V offers. So in short--a pretty good meal but, if you can forego the meat, P&V at 15th and K is probably a better option. read more

There is nothing better than a fresh corn tortilla, and what you get here is top notch. I had dinner in the upstairs area and tried the three tacos. It was a relief to see they let you mix and match the tacos you get, nice touch. I had one apiece of fried fish, chicken, and barbacoa. They all satisfied, but the barbacoa was the clear winner, super tender meat and dripping with delicious juices. For drinks they offer up some interesting cocktail creations, and I was excited to see sol horchata, which the menu boasts is fresh brewed horchata mixed with patron xo cafe. That mix sounded otherworldly, but it was just ok. The horchata did not taste fresh, if it was, it isn't that great. Still, after the food hit the spot I wasn't too concerned with the drink. Bonus points because they have a nice little outdoor deck out back upstairs. It looks well shaded and is a bit more intimate. Extra bonus points for solid service. read more

I mean, they definitely deserve to blow up but that will probably mean less seating for me, the girl who comes in at least twice a week. I love to support the local eateries whenever I come to DC. Decided to try out this Mexican spot after a wonderful show at Atlas Perfoming Arts Center since many of my favorites (Smith Common, Cusbah, etc.) have been closed down (presumably due to COVID). While the line was not unbearably long, the wait was. After observing how the order were fulfilled before me, I chose to build my own bowl. The lady was light on the white rice so i asked her to provide a little more and she obliged. The next several toppings were all reasonable quantities until i got to cheese -an ever so slight sprinkle. I politely requested a little more and the lady insisted i'd be charged 90 cents. My explanation that she didnt put on as much cheese as previois customers appeared to not matter to her at all and she pulled out a mini plastic cup to illustrate a full cheese portion. To anyone else it would be clear her sprinkles would not have filled half that cup but she refused to let up and insisted on charging for extra. I caved and said fine "extra cheese". Using her fingers, she sprinkled the same amount of cheese on top as she did before. What?!? She just pulled out a plastic measuring cup yet decided to repeat the same lame inconsistent quantity. To say i was pissed was an understatement. It was like she was f-ing with me and all i wanted to do was have dinner. I asked to speak to a manager and the second round of games began. The lady at the cash register said she was the manager to which she replied no I'm not. What type of establishment is this? As a customer, i have every right to speak to a manager and to not be mistreated. None of the three women would responded to my pleads to speak to a supervisor or even to give me that person's name and/or number or email address. Instead they ignored me and acted like they all of a sudden no longer understood English. Attached is a photo of them while toying with me and putting my nearly complete bowl off to the side. As an organization, what did they gain? They lost several customers all over a tiny bit of cheese and disrespectful service. They also wouldn't provide a cup of water to my elderly mother. You have to pay $3+ for a bottle. Hopefully, the actual manager and/or owner will talk to these employees and remind them of the importance of good customer service. read more

I visited this spot for the first time on 4/10/18 and I was beyond unimpressed. When I received my check, I noticed the gratuity was already included. I then asked my friend that recommended and frequented the place if this was customary. She said it's not standard so when we addressed the server he explained that it was standard for parties of three or more. We then asked to see the policy and the person in charge. Soon after, a woman walked over with the menu and we read the fine print which clearly stated parties of 5 or more or bills over 100 dollars would be subject to automatic gratuity. At this point, I was beyond upset at the dishonest behavior of the server and how nonchalant he was. I don't think that he expected us to be so persistent but we knew that it just didn't make sense that two adults and one child would be subject to an automatic gratuity. The female bartender in charge of the upstairs attempted to mediate the exchange between the the server and us. She attempted to excuse his actions by saying that they are in the process of changing the policy soon and then she went on to further justify it by saying he added it b/c he doesn't get many tips upstairs so he was ensuring he would get paid b/c he does not receive a salary. She then took the bill to void it out and ring it up again and as she walked away she looked at the 18% he added to the checks and stated "that's not much".... I will never step foot in this establishment or recommend it to anyone--ever. read more

I was excited when I saw all the good reviews about the fish tacos so of course I had to order them. Along with the fish tacos, I ordered a side of Mexican rice. The fish tacos were disappointing. Granted, they are big and filling but the actual fish was bland and tasted kind of funny. The Mexican rice was great though. My bf and I had the $25 Margarita Pitcher, passion fruit. It was GOOD! And let me not forget, it was STRONG! Between the two of us, we were able to get 4 glasses out of the Margarita pitcher each which was awesome. If I come back, I know not to get the fish tacos. I ordered from SOL Mexican grill via DoorDash. I typed in the wrong delivery address and my first order went to my neighbors a few blocks up. Ok...ALL MY FAULT. So I chat with DoorDash they refund my coins and I reorder. See the fact that I typed in the wrong addy from the start and I never got the food should have been a sign...but nahh! I reordered the same exact thing. Now mind you this my first time eating from this place. Well I frequent Surfside on Wisconsin Ave and the actual Surfside Taco stand near Dupont Circle. While they may be a little pricey, I'm a firm believer you get what you pay for. I paid $4 for the worse tacos ever. I am willing to take responsibility for wasting my money. I asked for black beans on the tacos. I wanted the beans, not the bean juice. So my steak and chicken tacos were swimming in black bean juice. Soggy flour tortillas and tasted like only black beans. I guess it's too much to ask them to drain the damn beans before putting them on a taco. I dont like the juice in my bowls or on nachos. JUST TRIFLING and take no pride in presentation. They could use the paper containers like Surfside so your food doesn't get nasty and soggy. The queso dip was just aight. The chips have a sweet taste to me. I am never ever ever spending another dime here. Oh wait, the fish taco smelled spoiled like old fish. They drowned it in some kinda sauce that's probably good but I wasn't eating it. I came here with a friend to grab something to eat before going to a concert that night. We ordered a bowl and some chips/guacamole to split and that was enough to fill both of us up. The portions are pretty generous and you definitely get what you paid for. They have a happy hour (taco Tuesdays?) on the upper floor, and I would suggest taking advantage of that deal. The place is set up similar to Chipotle and the service is pretty quick, as well. The food is really good and I wish I had tried the tacos (especially the fish tacos!). Was very impressed with this truck's service and food. There was quite a line to order at Farragut Sq today, but I attributed it to their popularity. I ordered 3 corn tacos, and though it's $7, they charge $1.50 for what they say is "extra guac" (note however, that they don't give you any guac to start, so it's a bit misleading). I really appreciated all the topping choices and how they wrapped the tacos in foil and served them to you on a takeout paper plate/bowl thingy. Oh and they tucked a few good quality napkins and a fork in the bowl....made it easy to carry back to the office (it's the little things that count!)
