I think this place is great. The whole La Cosecha concept is amazing, and a Latino food market simply cannot miss a solid Mexican spot. Thankfully, Mezcalero never disappoints. Their margaritas are always a good choice, but this visit I decided to try the Ranch Water, which was refreshing and delicious. For food, I ordered the Shrimp Aguachile, and it was excellent, plus, it came served in the cutest little molcajete. One thing to keep in mind: if you visit Mezcalero or any of the spots at La Cosecha during the World Cup, bring a little extra patience. We hadn't seen Brandon since Christmas and had just arrived in our nation's capital to see how he's adapting to relocating his life from sunny Southern California. Tonight's meal was noteworthy on several fronts. The spicy queso served with the chips & salsa is an authentic revelation...so utterly finger-licking good that my gorgeous wifey, a native Michoacana, swiftly ordered a second serving. The three of us ordered fajitas, dueling Fajitas Mexcalero platters for my son and I and my bride chose the shrimp ones. The chicken and asada were 100% on point, juicy, well-seasoned and expertly charred. The chorizos were a nice addition. My girl wolfed down her shrimp fajitas like she'd never seen one, before! Server Camila kept our drinks, by and large, refilled. I say "by and large" because I did have to ask 2-3 times for my second Diet Coke. The Mezcalero is a brightly lit space, featuring gleaming, well polished surfaces and the air is redolent of charred peppers, onions and proteins being deployed in their recipes. The sole reason I cannot, in good faith, award Mezcalero the five-star rating it seriously flirted with? Simple missteps around pricing. I'll elaborate. I've been happily married to this beautiful Michoacana lady for 28yrs and have savored Mexican cuisine from Cozumel to Cabo and literally hundreds of Mexican restaurants, stateside. In the continental U.S., at least, it's highly irregular to charge customers for chips & salsa...even more so to fail to advise us that "Hey, we charge $5 for that- Would you still like it?" Equally jarring was to see how we were charged a $2 surcharge for flour tortillas plus a mandatory 20% gratuity tacked onto my bill. I'm a generous guy, consider myself an excellent tipper. But here's a tip- Why wouldja automatically assess a 20% tip onto my party of three tab without forewarning me? Is this a WDC restaurant policy? Soooo- If Mexcalero at La Cosecha would've given me a heads up concerning any of these various "nickel and dimed" charges which all invariably found their way onto my final bill...I would've felt, at minimum, more at ease. But to just sit back, keep sending out drink refills, chips & salsa plates, sides of tortillas and then indiscriminately smack my final bill with $35 in extra fees (mandatory tip incl) helps me lose the appetite for the harvest, la cosecha, we came to reap. read more

This is one of my go to spots for a good quesadilla. They make the quesadillas with corn tortillas which is a huge game changer for me, I love corn tortillas and I think it adds so much flavor compared to flour tortillas. The steak is cooked so well and so flavorful. The seasoning mix is perfect. They also make amazing calamari and spicy margaritas. I haven't had anything at mezcalero that I haven't enjoyed. I can not express how delicious the flavors were, the char of the octopus, the buttery goodness from the fat and the sauce omg the sauce. Ugh. I need 14 of them! My wife and I have been regulars at Mezcalero since it opened. The restaurant opens out into the La Cosecha food hall/market, so the layout is a little odd -- but don't let this discourage you from trying it out. To start, I'd recommend the Oysters al Carbon con Crab Meat. It's a little heavy, but absolutely delicious. Their burritos (all of them) are excellent, but be aware the sauce is a little spicy. I also love the Cameron's a la Diabla and the Baja Fish Platter. It's a small restaurant, so it's easy to make eye contact with the waitstaff if you need anything. They are always super friendly even when they're super busy. Sometimes there will be a soccer game viewing, dance class, music, or some other event in the hall that provides entertainment while you dine, or after. It's a hot spot, and definitely one of our favorite casual restaurants in the Union Market District. read more

We visited Mezcalero's newest location in the La Cosecha food hall recently. Their space is designed as a sit-down restaurant with table service. A very prominent U-shaped bar is in the center of the space, with approximately 10 small tables (which can be combined for larger parties) on both sides of the space with upholstered bench along the walls. When we first arrived, we were warned that no alcoholic beverages would be served or could be brought in given the lack of an alcoholic beverage license at this time. The space is sleek and modern, so we expected a more elevated dining experience, but the large picture menus that you are handed quickly disabuse you of that notion. We went in pretty blind since we were unable to find a complete menu for this location online. The menu is very long (too long), so I guess diners who appreciate lots of options will be pleased. For a starter/app, we were pointed to the shareable plates. Note that these seem pretty large and entree-sized. We got the Mussels con Chorizo which are served in a very large bowl with reddish chipotle cream sauce, a few pieces of chorizo, and two large pieces of toasted/oiled french bread. More than two people could share this as an appetizer. For main dishes, we got the Flautas Doradas de Pollo which was pretty basic and what you'd expect at a regular Mexican restaurant. Chicken and flavor overall was unremarkable. We also got the Jalisco Tacos which were in tasty tortillas but way too greasy. Needed lots of napkins to deal with the grease. Also, I don't understand why they include a small side of beef broth given that the 3 tacos are all braised beef. We found ourselves using the salsa sides that came with the Mussels dish instead, to brighten up the dish and change it up from being a one-note beef dish. Flautas came with rice and also beans, but the tacos come out with only the small cup of beef broth (with small pieces of beef in it). Food took awhile to come out -- more noticeable since no chips come out to the table here -- but service was very kind and friendly. We'll come back when they get their liquor license...after all, it's called Mezcalero. They might want to consider ditching the picture menu and paring down the options, especially at a place like La Cosecha. They should also consider adding some small snackable appetizer options like chips with guacamole/salsa or other smaller options. read more
