I ordered a fish taco here right before a bus trip to NYC and it was pretty freakin good. As someone who does not eat meat but eats fish, I do wish that we had the option to put fish on the other tacos. There is only one version of the fish taco and you can't add anything or make substitutions. I like the toppings on the taco but they could be so much better. The fish itself though is spectacular. First time here and I loved it! I happened to come on a Tuesday when they offer a taco Tuesday special of $2 tacos which consist of a protein (excluding fish) topped with onions, cilantro, and salsa verde- I got the carnitas and it was sooo good. The meat itself was juicy and flavorful and I loved the traditional minimal toppings. I also got the fish taco, it was very good and very filling. I just moved to DC from Texas so I have been skeptical about trying Mexican, Tex-Mex and fast Mexican restaurants up here. I assumed the set up of this spot was similar to a Chipotle and it is! I didn't go inside because it was brought to my work for me but I was pleasantly surprised with the taste of the meal I got! I ordered a bowl with chicken, Mexican rice and some toppings. The flavor of the ingredients and especially the hot sauce and salsa Verde were really good. Their lettuce isn't quite as crunchy as I would've hoped so make sure you add something with good crunch if you want that texture but overall it was a great lunch break meal. Good place for lunch. This is essentially a locally owned Chipotle/Qdoba. Tacos, burritos, rice bowls, etc are all available here just as they are in the other restaurants. Their steak and chorizo is much better than Chipotle/qdoba so that's a plus for me. Of these type restaurants, I think Chipotle is the worst since all their food is prepared then thrown in the fridge, only to be pulled out when ingredients get low. A cold meat bowl isn't quite appetizing. I guess they do that to squash anymore food born illnesses from sickening their customers. Anyhoo, Sol's food is hot and prepared right in front of you which is how it should always be. I prefer the steak/chorizo rice bowl and it always hits the spot. Seating here is quaint. One large table and a bunch of smaller 2-4 person tables in the upper floor. Outside seating is here now that it's spring time. Prices are reasonable considering the area. Food and drink will run you about $10-$15ish dollars so not too bad on the wallet. Good tasting food so can't really go wrong here. Does get quite busy around lunchtime so the wait can be a tad on the long(er) side depending on when you get here. read more

How to describe my Sol experience in a word? Wow. As a loyal chipotle patron, I opted to give Sol a try seeing it as a better alternative to 7-11 and boy am I glad I did. The choices of rice? Brilliant. Generous portions, tasty salsas, and most of all, the ingredients are straight FRESH yo. I had a decent meal at Sol on a Monday at lunch. It is very much like Chipotle or District Taco, but it might be more "watered down," in the sense that the toppings aren't very adventurous or spicy. However, I thought everything was cooked just right for the quality they have to work with: beans, onions, peppers, corn, queso, guac, and rice were all good. It could have used a little bit more seasoning all around for my taste. I did enjoy a few of the small toppings but I hope they change it up some in the future with rotating and seasonal veggies, or maybe some more regional or authentic ingredients to set themselves apart from you know who. I tried the carnitas and thought they were pretty good, but some bites were too dried out. The bowl portion size was OK, a little less than chipotle. Beware though, the salad portion amount is tiny. They will literally give you about 6 pieces of mixed lettuce in the bowl. I may be wrong, but I did not see any corn tortillas or tacos available when I was there, which I personally prefer. Unfortunately, with other fast casual around offering similar prices with more flavorful organic and local options, I may only come back once to give it another try. read more

Worst service of all time. I've been many times because the tacos are tasty, but if they are busy, no one listens, they rush you through the line, and if something is wrong they blame you for not informing them of what you wanted in the beginning even though they weren't listening at the start! It's so frustrating because the food is good but the service abysmal. If there's more than three people in the line it's slow, and there's no attention to customer care...ever. I was told by a friend that there isn't any good Mexican restaurants in DC. I'm not sure if that's true but this is definitely making me a believer. I was under the impression this is more of a sit down dining place, but when I walked in I realized it is more like QDOBA or Chipotle. I figured it would be comparable to those two but it failed to even live up to those expectations. I ordered two fish tacos which received good reviews in Yelp but (besides actually being warm) the flavor was lacking. The flavor wasn't actually lacking, but an appetizing flavor is what was lacking. The fish didn't taste good at all. I also bought two Taco Tuesday tacos. You are limited to two toppings and a sauce for their Taco Tuesday special, which I understand to a certain extent. The issue was that the chicken and steak on the two tacos weren't even warm. Room temperature meat is not my preference for tacos. Save yourself the disappointment and just go to Chipotle. read more

When I walked in, the smell of warm chips, seasoned chicken, and fresh guac reminded me of the most special night of the week during my childhood- Taco Tuesday. The woman behind the counter guided me like my mother used to, describing each ingredient and helping me as I crafted my perfect meal. She used extreme care as she packed the bowl with large portion sizes of all selected ingredients, each filled with more love than the one before. While the service was superb, the food was even better. Fresh, flavorful, and filling. Each bite was an explosion of deliciousness in my mouth. Definitely will be going back, and definitely would recommend this place to you. read more

$2 TACO TUESDAYS!!! I happened to go there today and saw they had $2 TACO Tuesday every Tuesday (tacos are usually $3.50). The line was long but worth it. I have one of each of their meats: Pollo (Chicken), Carne Asada (steak), Carnitas (pulled pork), and chorizo (pork sausage). My favorite were the pulled pork (which had a surprising sweetness to it) and chorizo. The chicken was good too, but the steak was over cooked today. Note: The $2 tacos have a pre-set toppings (I forget what toppings, but it's good), and does not include the fish taco. Usually when I go there I get a bowl and they will give you 1/2 and 1/2 on the proteins if you want. I really enjoy how favorable their food is and the price is good. This was one of my favorite food trucks and I'm glad they have a Brick and Mortar near my job now :) Update: I went back there today for $2 Taco Tuesday and got all 4 meats again. Carne Asada (steak) was better this time, but still my least favorite of the 4. My order of preference: 1. Carnitas (pulled pork) - surprising sweetness. 2. Chorizo (pork sausage) - gripping of delicious well seasoned goodness and oil. 3. Pollo (Chicken) - well seasoned chicken. Better than Chipotle. 4. Carne Asada (steak) - Decent. TL:DR- Solid choice for lunch, fast service, good price. For reference, I got their burrito with carnitas. The yellow rice and pintos could use more definitive flavors, but did not detract from the overall experience. For toppings, I kept it simple with pico, lettuce, sour cream, and cilantro (fresh!!). They have both red and green salsa, but the green somehow isn't on their menu board. I will definitely revisit that on my next time in. All in all, nothing special but just like Mama used to make (if you grew up in a Latinx household). After California Tortilla closed in Gallery Place/Chinatown, I struggled to find an alternative to over-spiced-and-priced Chipotle (blarg). I work less than a block away and this is a God-send for my burrito-loving soul. I wish I had taken the chance on them sooner. read more

Got a bowl to go from here when I was in the area at lunchtime. It's your standard fast casual Mexican joint. I ordered online and the food was ready about ten minutes later, I grabbed it and went! The portion was generous, which I appreciated. I had enough to eat for two or three meals. I also got the chips and queso, which unfortunately wasn't super impressive (but I have a very high bar for queso, so take that for what you will). All in all, the food was good and fast--nothing special, but I had no real complaints and would eat there again if I was craving Mexican. read more

They were cooking a bunch of chicken on the grill when my husband asked if he could get chicken instead. The man rudely said no. Just seem like he was forced to go to work. Visiting DC and the food was good. I ordered a burrito with steak. I must say, they ran out of steak before I arrived and made me a fresh batch so that may be why it was really good. It's on par with a Moe's/Willy's/Chipotle alternative. They also have to go margaritas. The guava margarita is definitely pink grapefruit juice and little to no guava. There's alcohol present though. This was a convenient first stop to grab since we stay at the AC by Marriott almost next door. read more

Summary: Sol's new location provides downtown diners a strong alternative to District Taco by providing a refreshing variation on build-your-own fast casual Mexican, at a lower price. Absolute rating: 5/10. Relative rating (incorporating price): 6.5/10. Food: The first notable element of my burrito was the tortilla - a thinner, softer, and larger cousin of those found at other similarly situated establishments. This more delicate tortilla was slightly more prone to breakage, but provided actual flavor and texture to the meal. The Mexican rice was puffy and firm and well-seasoned (actual cumin?). The vegetable mix was surprisingly fresh and distinctive, not water logged like you may find elsewhere, with large chunks of crisp bell pepper and tangy slices of onion. In perhaps a first for fast casual in DC, the black beans were actually spiced and appropriately firm. The meats were mixed: the chicken was pleasantly marinated and generally decent quality (read: no fat... cough, cough, Chipotle) but the steak, while properly cooked, was underwhelming and rather monotone. I was equally ambivalent about the sauces: the spicy sauce was perhaps mildly spicy for a Midwesterner and the server put so much chipotle sauce on my burrito that I would have tasted only chipotle had I not scooped some of the sauce out; that said, the chipotle flavor was certainly more robust than anything one would find at Chipotle. The guacamole was moderately above average for fast casual, with a rich and piquant flavor and composition. Worth getting on the side for chips, unlike the bland paste at Chipotle and the creamy and insipid guac at District Taco. Service: I arrived to a twenty-plus person line out the door at Sol's K street opening and was delightfully surprised when I carried my order out the door twelve minutes later - that portends well for lunch-time eaters. The rapid pace of service was facilitated by reserved, but pleasant line preparers and a manager at the cash register. Although the line I encountered was likely the result of a $2 bowl/burrito special, peak-time eaters, like those at lunch, should expect to occasionally queue outside as there was little interior space for a line. I took my food to go, so I cannot comment on the noise level; however, I imagine noise is not a significant concern given that the order line and seating are on different floors, ground and upper floors, respectively. read more

I try to make a habit of visiting places at least twice before I write a review but I'm trying switch things up (new year, new me, right?). I went to the new Sol location with my friend for lunch today; we had both been eyeing it but hadn't had a change to stop by before now. I was expecting something Chipotle adjacent, which it was except 100x better!! We walked in and I was impressed because I could smell the food cooking (thats always a good sign to me). We both had burritos, mine steak and his chicken, although there was some serious debate about tacos. The meat was tender and all of the ingredients tasted fresh; I saw them changing the containers for fresh food (twice!) during my short time at the counter. My only issue was that the queso was really rich; great for chips but a little too heavy for my burrito, so I'll have it that way next time. Seating is a bit limited so you may want to take that into consideration around lunch time but with so many offices near by, I assume its more of a grab and go kind of place. I do believe Sol is my new go to spot for fast Mexican, I look forward to coming back for more! read more

There are a ton of taco shops in DC and this has to be one of the worst. The carnitas was really dry at noon, a bad sign. It was either overcooked or left over from the day before. Corn tortillas were out of a bag, which is fine, but seemed stale or old - they couldn't hold their contents, crumbling as soon as I tried to eat one.
