Sol Hair Salon is a full salon that does the following: haircuts for women, men, and children. Perms, Karotine, Extensions, Highlights, Blow dry. They used to do waxing, and extension for eye lashes. They also used to do makeup and makeup removal. Well, today I had an appointment with Marisol (the owner of the salon) at 12:30pm. She is usually prompt and on time. She was running a few minutes late. She had a lady with long hair and was blow drying her hair. She has 3 other ladies that work for her, but I only trust my hair with Marisol. She knows her job very well, is very knowledgeable, sweet, kind, helpful, and has a keen eye. I normally go to touch up my roots. The way she washes your hair is like you are in HEAVEN!! Yes, that good. She is gentle with your hair and lately I go for a haircut too. She does everything w/out you even telling her anything. She went up on the price by $5.00 effective this year. That's ok, doesn't break the bank. For color, cut, and wash & light blow dry, I paid her $115.00. Her salon is very clean, modern looking, elegant. They offer you water and even have different types of magazines. Place has stylish decor all around and nice overhead music playing inside the salon. One last thing: It's so close to my house that all I need to do is cross the street! They accept major credit cards and cash. I am thankful and grateful that I have found Sol Salon with Marisol in it! She took ownership back in 2016. I highly recommend this salon to anyone! Been going there since 2021. I bought a Groupon for 'balayage and haircut' for Sol Salon. For starters, the stylist called me that morning to say she was having car trouble and she wouldn't be able to take my appointment: I told her that it didn't matter what time she got to the salon, but that she needed to honor my appointment because I was set to travel the following day and needed my hair done. She then agreed to take me later in the day when she 'could get to the salon'. My initial reaction to the was that I found it odd that the stylist and myself were the only people in the establishment: apparently the owner of the salon was out of town, and there were no other stylists or customers. With that being said, it comes down to the quality of the work, and was not good at all. My hair looks exactly the same as when I went in: there is a harsh line of demarcation, my greys were not blended and my hair looks as if I got nothing done. The Groupon called for a 'full balayage' and the stylist only placed a few foils and stated she would not be doing my entire head, as she thought it was not necessary at that time, and that she would do it the 'next time' I came in. From reading other reviews, I have seen other people state that the stylist has told them the same thing: that they will only get a partial balayage instead of a full. When I got back from my trip, which was four days, I contacted the owner of the salon and sent her photos of my hair, inquiring if she thought the quality of the work was good and looking for my hair to be fixed. I asked the owner of the salon to fix my hair, and instead, she made excuses for the stylist and defended her. She made statements such as, 'balayage doesn't cover the grey', which is not true: it has to be blended. I told the owner that I clearly stated to the stylist that she had to do a root melt in order to erase the harsh line of demarcation, to which the stylist told me that it was not necessary: it obviously was necessary, as my hair looks like shit. Even though the owner acknowledged that my hair did not look good, she did not arrange to fix my hair or make good on the full balayage promise. I really had hoped that the owner would want to rectify the situation, as this reflects very poorly on her as a business owner, and on the quality of the work her salon is putting out. I feel my pictures will speak for themselves. I absolutely would not go to the salon if you want any sort of balayage. It is a waste of money. You should just set your money on fire instead. read more

The stylist (Lisa) was 5 minutes late. She had some ridiculous excuse for why she was late and tried to drum up sympathy rather than sincerely apologizing for her lateness. The hair wash was disappointing and I'm pretty sure there's still dry shampoo left on my scalp from the day prior as she didn't really scrub it. When she clipped my hair up to blow it out, she didn't secure it to my head well and then kept brushing over the clipped hair, yanking it out of the clip. She used the most ridiculously awkward tool to curl my hair during the style - one of those automatic spin-y wands that a middle schooler might be excited about using and she wasn't familiar with using it. Note to stylists with new equipment: don't test it on paying customers for goodness sake. And to top it all off, she complained about her life the entire time. I'm a pretty quiet / awkward person when getting any beauty treatment done, and most estheticians pick up on that and don't talk a lot, OR they're incredibly skilled conversationalists and make me feel really comfortable talking. This was awkward on almost all levels. AND she was insistent on taking pictures of me when she was finished! The first she snapped of the back of my hair without my consent and then, when she asked to take one of my front and I said no, she arranged my hair over my face asking if that was okay instead. I wanted to leave so I just let her, but damnit, consent is important! No means no! I don't want my pictures on your page to make it look like your business is awesome when I had a terrible experience. The salon itself looked incredibly throw-together - crap piled up on carts everywhere rather than organized neatly, and in general was just not a very welcoming place. I will not be returning, but I did preemptively karma-insure myself for this bad review by tipping 25% of the original cost of the treatment before the Groupon that I used. OBSESSED WITH MY HAIR! I haven't had this great of a haircut in a very long time. I went to Sol Salon today as a new client and my stylist was Lisa. I have extremely thick hair that is also pretty wavy. It's always scary to go to any new stylist with thick/curly hair as it needs to be cut in a certain way. My hair really needed some love. It had grown out and had no shape to it whatsoever. I went in with a style in mind. I wanted curtain bangs and a butterfly haircut. I started showing her several photos of what I wanted and she then said, "you know, there's something called a butterfly cut and it would look great on you..." so it was very clear to me that she knows her stuff and I immediately knew my hair was in good hands. I also like that she commented she cuts her clients hair how they want it cut, not how SHE thinks it should be cut...that's a great stylist. Long story short, she took the time to listen to what I really wanted. She asked me several times if the length was good or if I wanted to go any shorter. Tried this place out through Groupon since my usual stylist is still closed. Lisa did my highlights and cut. Everything looked good and she was pleasant. Some people mentioned some comments that she made regarding damaged hair. I got the same comments, but didn't find them offensive (believe me, I've met some obnoxious stylists...Lisa was helpful not hurtful at least imo). Pleased with my color and cut, as well as the service. I wouldn't go back though. The Groupon does state that you will get charged more based on the length of your hair which was fine, but I didn't think it would be more than like $15 bucks but got charged an extra $30 or $35 here which I did think was excessive especially since my hair couldn't really get styled due to Covid restrictions on stylists. Granted I was told that when I first sat in the chair. I wasn't about to pass because this appointment was hard to get and I just didn't want to go all over LA to find someone available. Their prices for root retouches are about the same as my regular stylist ($50 or $55 but does not include blow dry or trim...my local person is $65 and includes everything). This salon is great! They described it as a neighborhood salon which is actually really cool to see in LA area (I am from a cute little suburb of San Diego where there are boutique salons everywhere); this is a sweet salon without being so uppity. Lisa and her colleague who owns the salon are excellent stylists; clearly very seasoned and were excellent with color. I had my hair done about 2/3 weeks ago now and it looked horrible. Lisa worked her magic in time for my upcoming honeymoon and its now a million times better. She was very careful to keep the integrity of my hair, work with me even on the charges (which I so appreciated because it was so expensive. I had a wonderful experience. I was in that last salon where I left in tears for almost 6 hours just for highlights and a cut. This was totally different. Well. I made an appointment after finding this salon on Groupon. My usual person was out of town and I had a red carpet the next day so I needed my hair color touched up. I called and made my appointment, a week ahead of time, and they gave me 10 am because he said that was a tough time slot to fill. I show up to my appointment and some "email" had cancelled my appointment and moved someone else into the time slot. He kept showing me the email, like I didn't believe him. It's not that I didn't believe he received the email, it's that I didn't cancel my appointment so how are we going to fix this? He just kept telling me there was nothing he could do. All he did was call "his boss" and leave a message, and said if this girl doesn't show up, then I can take you!! I'm sorry, but you sit me in a chair and you make it work. I had already paid for the service and you don't get to just tell me "sorry!" He also suggested "I can get you in next week!" What good does that do me when I have an event tomorrow morning! This is your mistake, fix it! I called the salon across the street and they made it work. I'll NEVER go to this Salon again. If I can't trust them to keep appointments, how can I trust that my hair will be what I need it to be when I need it. ATTENTION GROUPON USERS You're safe here. After my last Groupon experience I decided not to get my hopes up, but GIL definitely delivered. He was so friendly, professional, and very easy to talk to. He even taught me a thing or two about the process it takes styling/coloring different types of hair, and the way he breaks it down so simply (to someone like me who knows almost nothing) you could tell that he's had a lot of experience. I didn't see any reviews on him since he's actually the newest member there, so i wanted to give him the review he deserves. I wish i took before pictures, but I just grew out my hair after going platinum, so it was back to its thick dark natural color. I cut the tips off myself so there was no shape actual shape to it. Just a straight cut off the ends. I asked him to thin it out first and he did a great job of getting rid of so much without altering the length or appearance. Sometimes when i ask stylists to thin out my hair I just end up with short layers or a choppy look, but he did a completely different method from what I'm used to. my hair wasn't too long to begin with either, so I hesitated to ask for a trim even though I needed one. But he actually gave me the one inch trim i asked for and didn't surprise me with an extra 5 inches off my head like some people do. Thank you Gil for your help!! Honestly the worst haircut I've ever had. I asked to keep the length, to add layers and shaping around the face. She took several inches off and did a cut straight across the bottom. It looks awful and I don't know how to fix it because it's so short. I could have done a better job myself with this. It took her an hour to do it, too. I came here with a Groupon, as I was trying not to spend $70+ dollars on a simple long-layer haircut. My hair is naturally pin-straight and pretty easy to manage, so I assumed it wouldn't be too much of a risk to go cheaper. However, I don't think the woman who cut my hair was very skilled at layers because they came out very choppy and not blended at all. I didn't realize how it looked until I had someone take a picture for me. I am thinking of having my hair recut now, even though I already cut off about 10 inches at this salon. I was going to come here on a Groupon for full highlights and a cut. When I called for an appointment they said to not bother buying the Groupon. They would honor the price. When I got there, apparently there were additional charges in the fine print that I had missed for longer hair and toning. Totally my fault for missing that, but since I was on a budget, I apologized for wasting their time and offered to leave. The stylist offered for me to stay and tried lowering the fees or not doing toner. I said it was ok. I'd come back later when I could get it done properly. Then she offered to honor the Groupon price, without fees, if I got a partial highlight, which was kind of her. So I stayed. I showed her a photo of what I wanted and said I wanted it to look natural and to grow out gracefully. But the highlights are terrible. Nothing like the photo I showed her. They look like stripes and there are still roots. The pieces underneath look totally uneven and haphazard. The color is completely different from the rest of my hair so it doesn't look natural at all. And while I was getting my hair done, one stylist was openly complaining about clients while another was hanging out at his station on his cell. I gave it two stars because the woman who did my hair was so sweet and she did me a favor when she absolutely did not have to, but unfortunately the hair came out so badly I have to go somewhere else to fix them. read more

I found this salon via Groupon and got a cut, highlights, and style. I like the end result well enough but the experience was horrendous. I unfortunately don't know my stylist's name Bc she literally never introduced herself to me. I had scheduled an 11:00 appointment a week out, but at 10:30 I got a call saying that I had a 10:00 appointment and asking where I was. Now, I know I would not have scheduled for 10 because that doesn't fit my schedule, and I had it on my calendar as 11, but it was just my word against hers so I rushed over and got there by 10:50. When I came in, the stylist started fussing at me about how I was "over an hour late" and acting stressed out about fitting me-- then acted like she was doing me a favor by letting me keep my original appointment time. But we get into it, I explain what I want, she tells me that I have to pay an additional $35 bc I have "so much hair" to be color treated, which at this point I'm not going to not do since I already paid for the groupon, but I have incredibly fine hair and while it was mid back length when I came in, it was cut to just below shoulder length. This seemed kind of like a bait and switch to me, but I went with it. The stylist was really dramatic about the condition of my hair, at one point saying that it was "literally falling apart in her hands". The ends were dry and needed trimming. That's all. She cut my hair dry, which wasn't necessarily ideal because I have naturally wavy hair, but it looked fine when she was done. But when she put the color on my hair she sat down and asked me to slouch down in the chair and lean my head towards her in various directions, so she wouldn't have to stand, which was really uncomfortable and which I've never had someone ask of me. My neck is so sore after this. For the first hour and a half or so that I was there, my stylist didn't talk to me about anything at all, which was ok with me bc I'm a quiet and introverted person. But when she started she quickly turned the conversation to topics that were not relaxing stuff one wants to talk about while getting their hair done: her battle with cancer (I just lost a close friend to cancer AND my mom is currently battling it, so it was really not what I wanted to talk about), how only five percent of her friends she grew up with are still alive, and how she didn't have a boyfriend. She said a few things that made me uncomfortable (like saying she was glad that someone "dropped dead") and then would go back and forth between saying she was kidding and wasn't. It was just A LOT to listen to as a captive audience. When she finally washed my hair out, she did it with one hand, like half heartedly doing it as if distracted. Just weird. She was going to wet brush my hair and she pulled out a brush that was just FULL of someone else's hair. She apologized and got another one when I looked grossed out, but I never saw any of her tools in disinfectant of any kind. The area around her station looked dusty and less than clean and she had a jumble of stuff, including drugstore products on her station. The most wild thing for me was that she blowdried my hair without putting anything in it at all. My fine as heck hair. She curled it without heat protectant. Who does that? All this said, my hair looks fine, I just will not be going back. It was too stressful. read more

I've been contemplating on posting about this salon but I've decided to do it for all the Groupon purchasers. I bought a full foil plus a hair cut. The full foil was horrible underneath the first layer of hair (see pic). I thought it was weird that it only took an hour to do a foil and haircut... and I have a lot of hair. The hair cut was a simple a line bob but couldn't get that right either. My right side is a lot shorter than my left side. And I asked for some texture and I got choppy lengths. I purchased a Groupon for Sol Salon knowing that whoever was about to handle my hair was in for it! Luckily, I booked with Ashlee after hearing such rave reviews from a friend. Turns out, Ashlee has several clients that are friends of mine! Right away, I was welcomed and felt totally comfortable with Ashlee. Parking at Sol Salon is really easy too, which is a rarity in LA. Great little restaurants also reside in this mini-lot. Ashlee spent nearly 4 hours on my hair, making sure that the color was added properly. I'm naturally brunette with very dark roots, but I LOVE being blonde (it just fits my personality, lol!) Ashlee is hilarious, entertaining, and makes you feel comfortable to put your trust into her. Her haircut on me was one of the best I've ever had, and she didn't cut too much considering how much I savor my length. So, sooooo, SO pleased with my new personality, as well as the cut and color! My hair. Has changed. My life. So, I got their cut n' style Groupon and I met with Ashlee. I absolutely LOVE how she did my hair, and the cut has been perfect. She is also a pretty awesome gal herself. Made me feel right at home plus I loved my hair cut, so definitely a win-win. Then, I noticed that they did eyelash extensions. I used to get them done at a fabulous salon in Downey, but I moved way too far from there and haven't been able to make it back. So, I inquired about their eyelash services, and Ashlee prefaced it by letting me know that the person who would do them is still learning. Being that I am an educator, I figured someone's gotta learn somehow! Marisol was set to do my lashes. I asked to see some of Marisol's previous lash work, which wasn't extensive, but I could tell she had an eye for how they should look because hers were so beautiful, so I entrusted her with my own. I booked an appointment knowing full well she is still learning, but she was completely honest about her skill level. I went in for a Saturday late afternoon session, and it was a very long 3 hour session. But I was patient with her as she was with me. I am sure with practice, she will be much faster. But when I emerged from the salon, my lashes were SUPER fabulous! I love them. Even though she may be learning her techniques, her skill for lash aesthetics is definitely there. So if you are in the market for lashes, give her a try! I absolutely love my lashes, and I can't wait to get them filled. :D read more

A friend recommended Ashlee for a haircut, and I'm so glad I ventured out of DTLA to go see her! I wanted a big trim (~4 inches) and my undercut faded. Ashlee was super welcoming and made sure she knew what I wanted/liked every step of the way. My hair feels so much lighter; I love how she did the layers and framing around my face. The price is super reasonable as well ($25 for cut, $50 for cut and blowout). Being Asian I've had my share of subpar salon experiences, so I'm ecstatic to have found a great stylist (and overall great person) I can trust with my hair! read more

Looking for a new hair salon in the area and in need of highlights. Found a Groupon for this salon, $62 for full highlights. I called to book an appointment and they said do NOT buy the Groupon, they would honor the price. I did as they said and came in for my appointment. Sat in the chair, cape on, ponytail out, and as the woman got ready to work on my hair she said that she would be charging me $30 for toner after my highlights. WTF? I mean, this isn't my first rodeo. Not only is that unheard of, to ITEMIZE TONER, and at $30! - it's just a VERY BAD business practice to drum up business with Groupon deals and then add on the extra cost so the deal you thought you were getting no longer exists. I asked if I would need toner as I never seem to need it unless I have been over processed and she said yes, I would NEED the toner. -um, okkkkkkayyyy? If they would have said, hey we need to charge you more for extra length, or maybe we recommend this conditioning treatment would you like to add this on, I likely would have not thought twice. But the TONER? Please, give me a break. Anyway, I got the highlights, and like the other yelper review I just read, the toner made my hair DARKER. I came in for highlights and these 'highlights' not only did not 'take' to my hair (only 5 mins under the dryer will do that - again NOT my first rodeo getting highlights, I get them every few weeks!) My hair is now a shade of a muted grayish brown. My husband and his friend both made a comment on my new darker fall hair color that same day. *Notice I said comment and not compliment - it looks just plain bad. I am SO bummed I went to this place and spent over $100. NOW I have to find a place to fix this mess and spread the word on their business practice. Let me save you time and money ladies - DO. NOT.
