What a nice find in Solana Beach. This is a friendly, casual and welcoming local eatery that delivers big on food, service and fresh preparation. Clam Chowder is a nice change from the board white potato soup that is so common. The Fish Tacos come with a welcome spice. And, it's always a treat to find crispy clam strips on the menu! Back to give Solana Beach Fish House another go! I still feel this is a local SB seafood shop that has good hearty food. Many local residents dine here. Nothing fancy and the portion sizes are good. Service was great and you can feel the positive energy of the customers. Ambiance is a fisherman's cave! The 3 stars are for the server and food. I moved to Solana almost a year ago and always come in for lunch and have the same server. She gives the best service, is always very kind and even when it's super busy we're always taken care of. A coworker of hers started screaming at her in the restaurant in front of many other tables, and it really ruined the dining experience. Not sure if he is the owner but I've never seen him before. The food is amazing, but the environment made me so uncomfortable I don't think I'll be back. My husband and I are crazy about the fish and chips and tacos, but I don't think I can support a restaurant where an owner yells at a waitress where several tables can hear her getting berated. Not bad, not great. I came here today because Fish 101 was closed. I got the fish and chips. The fish had a nice crispy coating, but was pretty flavorless. The chips were a little dry and plain. Service was great, the food came out quickly, and the ambience was casual but clean. Three of us had lunch and each of us loved are fish tacos. I had Cajun style, the other two had Baja style. They were served with excellent black beans and simple rice. I can't believe I'm leaving this review. I called earlier in the day to see if they'd be open on New Year's Eve. I called in and this wonderful place that I've dined at for 12 years was so difficult. And I didn't understand. Argumentative didn't know a simple fish and chips order. I couldn't believe I was calling the Fish House. 91-year-old mom didn't get her New Year's Eve fish and chips. We had the grilled swordfish plate and the grilled halibut plate. Both were fresh and seasoned well. Not shy on the spices and herbs here! Brussels as a side is a must do. Overall very healthy and good size portions. Pricing was reasonable at an average of $25 for a grilled seafood plate with two sides. The server was really nice and attentive. If I were to have constructive input on improvement (necessitating a 1-Star deduction) it would be this: They advertise a variety of $3 Taco Tuesday offerings, which the 4 of us all ordered 2-3. It would have been helpful to know in advance that these were the smallish "Street Taco" size and we may have ordered differently. Secondly, I ordered Guacamole and chips for the table ($10.99) which were promptly delivered nice and hot, but with no salsa. I requested the salsa, then noticed upon check out he charged us $3.50 for it. I must say, that's the first time I've ever been charged for salsa when ordering/paying for chips; seemed kinda odd. read more

Customer service really makes a difference and this is one of those places that had great service! The host/waitress was super friendly and kept checking up on us. Another waiter that came out with our food was also helpful and friendly. We sat outdoor in the patio. And stopped by here before taking the train home. Because we were outside, a family was sitting nearby with their dog and it kept barking every time the waiter came out. This is why allowing dogs is not always great (some owners cannot control their dogs). I felt bad for the waiter having to put up with that too (even though the owners claimed the dog is friendly and won't bite. Mhmm). I ordered the fish n chips (2 piece cod cause dang errathang is expensive. Mine was $16 something!) and it was delicious!! The coleslaw was disappointing (i agree with another reviewer, it wasn't that tasty), the fish was amazingly crispy outside and tender inside and no strong fish taste, and the fries were yummy! There are plenty of hot sauces to choose from as well (Tabasco, El Chalupa, and Jalisco) on the table. My husband ordered the clam chowder and it surprisingly has dill in it but tasted different in a good way. I also tried a few bites of his salmon burger and it was delicious!! We saw that they had Fish n' Chips, and the general consensus led us to trying it out. - PARKING - Small lot for several businesses, but we didn't have any trouble finding a spot. - SERVICE - The staff was very patient with us as we waited inside for our friends to text us their orders. We lingered for about 15 minutes so we appreciated them allowing us to stand around. Once we ordered it didn't take more than another 15 minutes for our large group order to come out. If you were dining in, there's a good amount of seating inside and a few tables outside as well. - FOOD - 3-piece Cod ($17.95): We were so excited to eat this once we opened the box! Once we took our first bite, we were so happy we found Solana Beach Fish House. The batter is so light and crisp and crunchy, and the fish inside was moist and juicy. The fries were cooked well too! Knowing the clams were just alright I decided to try the Combo plate. COMBO PLATE - it had everything (clam, fish, shrimp, fries). The clam strips had improved from before. Everything was good but not amazing. I've def had better but I've def had worst. Tuesday evening, 5:45. One guy working the whole restaurant, with 4 tables filled. He was nice enough but stretched in his workload. So many delicious options to choose from! We read all the Yelp reviews and ordered 3 piece fish and chips, bowl of clam chowder, seafood paella, linguini with shrimp and lobster burrito. Food came out about 15 minutes after ordering. - Linguini, soooooo creamy and garlicky! Not a large plate if you're hungry, but that's solved by just ordering it with something else. - Fish and chips, some of the best I've had. Worth not sharing and making it your entire meal. So flaky, it'll break apart with a press from your fork -- the batter is to die for. Coleslaw was not that flavorful. - Clam chowder was delicious. A little tangier and peppery than run-of-the-mill chowder. - Lobster burrito was solid and tasted like black beans. Rice had noodles in it and were interestingly good. Beans were standard. - Paella was the least favorite. Perhaps it was the olives...so if you like olives, your mileage may vary. Chicken was dry.
