I came here on a Thursday afternoon around noon. There's a hostess who seats you when you enter, and there was plenty of seating available with only a handful of other people dining at the time. Definitely make sure to check out their daily specials! When we visited, they were offering 50% off bottles of wine, which was a nice deal. Here's what I ordered: *Coconut Shrimp: This was absolutely phenomenal! The shrimp were fried perfectly, nice and crispy, and the dipping sauce really brought everything together. I highly recommend this dish and would absolutely order it again. *Shrimp Tacos: These come with two tacos, and each one had three large shrimp, so they definitely don't skimp on the shrimp. You can choose a side, and I went with the french fries. The fries were phenomenal, very crispy. Unfortunately, the tacos themselves were probably some of the worst tacos I've ever had. It honestly felt more like eating a salad piled onto a tortilla than eating a taco. There was way too much sauce, which made everything extremely soggy, and the tortillas wouldn't even stay together. I eventually gave up and just ate the shrimp out of them. I definitely would not recommend this dish. Our waitress was nice and did check on us after our food arrived, but I will say the service was pretty slow overall. My friend and I were catching up, so it wasn't a huge issue for us, and I'm sure we could have flagged her down if we were in a hurry to close out. She did notice that I wasn't happy with the tacos and offered to bring me another tortilla, which I appreciated. However, the soggy tortilla wasn't really the problem. It was the way the tacos were put together in the first place. I would have appreciated a little more effort to address the dish itself after it was clear I wasn't enjoying it. As far as the kitchen goes, the timing wasn't bad at all. The appetizer took around 10 minutes, and the tacos came out less than 10 minutes after that. My friend and I came across this cuuute coastal spot while in the heart of Del Mar. It definitely had a relaxing coastal vibe when we went inside which I gave a star for the tranquil ambience and another star for its location. They have an internal saying "Today is a Good Day" that invite us to join them for a good day everyday. Looved the messaging!! To my dismay, the service was slacking since it took some time to receive what we ordered as compared to the other people there. It wasn't that busy too. There's also an enclosed bar area with seating at high top tables. The stunning coral tree in front of the dining room makes a charming, garden-like setting. We enjoyed very good service as well as selections from their menu which features elevated Pacific rim influenced American bar food. All of our selections were imaginative, attractive, well prepared, and delicious. Look for special touches like ultra-crispy crunchy exterior on French fries that sport a soft, fluffy interior, bursts of flavor delivered by their sauces, and Veuve Cliquot champagne by the glass for only $13 after 3p.m. on Sundays (perfect after brunch treat?). For appetizers, the ahi tuna on crispy rice had a good mix of tropical flavors and textures. For the sides, truffle fries and Brussels sprouts with spam were my comfort foods. My entree was the macadamia nut-crusted halibut. Not only was it under-seasoned and bland, it did not have any macadamia nuts in the crust (1 star off). For $45, I was pretty disappointed in my entree. For dessert, the shave ice was good; Coral has a real shave ice machine that makes the ice pillowy soft. I've had this restaurant saved in my list of restaurants to go to for a while, but unfortunately it didn't live up to my expectations. Parking was pretty difficult for this location, although the restaurant itself was pretty open for a weekday lunch. The waitress informed us that we could seat ourselves anywhere, so customers were spread out between the indoor and outdoor seating areas. Due to this setup, I felt the service was on the slower side, as the staff had to monitor guests in two separate sections. The standout item to me was the coconut shrimp appetizer. It was delicious, crispy, and I loved the unique papaya pineapple puree that it came with. The garlic shrimp flatbread's flavor was pretty good, but the texture could have been crispier. The Del Mar Wagyu burger with fries was disappointing. At $24, the beef didn't taste like Wagyu quality meat, and the buns weren't toasted. Additionally, the caramelized onions lacked the sweetness I would typically expect. The menu mentioned that there is roasted garlic aioli, but that flavor didn't come through. We chose to sit outdoors and enjoy the Southern California breeze and sun. Coral Del Mar absolutely nails ambience. Beautiful location, very pretty space, great light, and the kind of place that makes you think brunch is going to be excellent. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the setting. One of our biggest issues was the menu itself. We'd see something that sounded appealing, read the description, and then get thrown off by an unexpected twist. For example, the loco moco uses beef short ribs, which immediately makes it... not really a loco moco. The beet salad also sounded enticing until beet yogurt appeared in the ingredient list. That pattern made ordering feel more confusing than exciting. We started with the SPAM musubi with guava glaze and a side of miso aioli. The miso aioli was genuinely good. The musubi itself fell short. Only one side of the SPAM was seared, so it wasn't consistently crispy, the guava glaze was very subtle, and the musubi fell apart easily. I ordered the blackened seasonal fish tacos with a side of sweet potato fries. The seasonal fish was sea bass. It was nicely blackened but lacked robust flavor. The tacos normally come with pico and pineapple salsa. I passed on the pineapple salsa due to an allergy, and while the pico was initially missing, it was brought out promptly after I mentioned it. Our waiter really did try his best, and no issues here were due to service. The taco shells looked very promising but ended up being bland. After my friend wisely asked for salt and pepper, that helped improve the tacos, but I ultimately skipped the tortillas altogether and focused on the fish. The sweet potato fries were actually pretty good. They came with jalapeño ranch, which was fine, though again the miso aioli was the standout sauce. There was dirt in my water cup, which was a big miss. My friend ordered the egg scramble and was highly disappointed. The bacon needed to be crispier, the potatoes were not crispy, and the scramble included broccoli, which felt like an odd choice. The mix of brown, sweet, and purple potatoes was visually interesting but strange as a breakfast side. Pricing-wise, the SPAM musubi was $12 and the fish tacos were $21+, which feels steep given the execution. My friend treated me, so I don't know the final total, but the value didn't quite align with the experience. Bottom line: gorgeous space and great location, but the menu felt overthought and the food leaned too avant-garde without delivering enough flavor or cohesion. Stopped by Coral for a Saturday brunch around 10 am and the restaurant was fairly empty. We got our pick of seats and found one with an ocean view. Unique menu with interesting food combinations. My husband tried the breakfast burrito with black beans. It was stuffed full! I had the eggs Benedict which was gluten free since the traditional English muffin was substituted for a potato pancake. The potato pancake was like a cheesy polenta on the inside and crispy on the outside. It was delicious. The breakfast potatoes were perfectly crispy and I liked the multi colored spread. The dish overall was a bit dense so a lighter side like fruit might have paired nicely since the Benedict's already had potatoes. My husband and I recently took a friend out to celebrate her birthday. The food was very good--kudos to the chef! Our waiter, Nate, was also wonderful. He was attentive, thoughtful, and provided excellent service. Unfortunately, our experience took a disappointing turn when the female manager asked us to leave because a party of 12 needed our table. We were surprised and disappointed that we weren't told beforehand that there was a time limit on our table. We would have appreciated either being informed when we were seated or being offered another table so we could finish enjoying our evening. We left feeling disappointed, especially because for us, service is everything. Even though the food was good and Nate was great, the way the evening ended left a bad taste and makes us unsure whether we will return. Dishes were generously sized but nothing stands out in terms of flavors, sauces or seasonings. Service was competent but rushed. Very noisy due to acoustics and a loud nearby table. Ambiance was casual and informal as opposed to fine dining. Parking was an issue, made worse by the city of Del Mar. There were a few spaces in their lot, but mostly you need to find street parking. And don't park in the area in front of the stores one block south with the UPS store. Del Mar police enforces a 20 minute limit even though it was late at night on a weekend and all stores were closed. (Fine was $55). Because of that we will avoid dining out in Del Mar. read more

As soon as you walk in, Coral feels modern but cozy with a great ocean view! Service was fantastic from start to finish and the food, especially the Bao Bun Benedict was delicious and felt like a fun new twist on typical brunch food. The drinks are wonderful though I do have to note that on menu, my mocktail was listed as $8 but on the receipt, we were charged $11. The former home of Zel's has been converted to a coastal inspired eatery named Coral Del Mar. I had dined at the predecessor over a decade ago and recalled that it was dimly lit and fairly upscale. The ambiance of this new spot was definitely brighter and more casual. There was a covered front patio for seating that was about half occupied during my visit. I sat in the main dining area which could hold about 40 customers. A one-page food menu featured appetizers, salads, sandwiches, tacos, and entrees. The offerings spanned a variety of Pan-Asian cuisines. I started my meal with the Spam Musubi. Two pieces were sliced in half containing sushi rice, Spam, and guava glaze. A cup of miso aioli was provided for dipping, however I didn't use much as there was already sufficient flavor. The $13 price tag was steep as you can get the same quantity and quality from local Hawaiian places for about half the cost. The Herb Grilled Pork Chop was my entree which was served with sweet potatoes and brussels sprouts coated with a bourbon-chili glaze. The chop was already divided into several smaller pieces. This was unusual because whenever I have order this cut of pork, it is normally served whole and even on the bone. The sweet potatoes were a nice contrast to the meat while the brussels sprouts were prepared better than what I had eaten the night before at a different restaurant. My waitress was exceptionally friendly and chatty. Her service was prompt and efficient. For a newly opened business, the dinner I had at Coral Del Mar was at a four star level. read more

Other selections with appealing dishes that caught my interest and I posted pics of the dishes I liked most. Was glad that everything was presented and plated nicely and was fresh tasting. Especially liked the Seared Ahi salad which was mostly soba noodles but the kitchen accommodated my request to add greens, since it is a salad! Another fav was the Seared Salmon with potatoes, corn and peppers succotash aka relish, and green coconut curry sauce was so delish, my only complaint was it need more of the green curry sauce. Not sure why my review didn't show the pictures but here we go again!Coral del Mar used to be the beloved Zels where I used to go with my girlfriends for happy hours, diners and even New Years Eve because we're one of the casual affordable places in the area in a cozy atmosphere. Now as Coral del Mar seems very similar, just it seems more open and airy. Still some live music, very intimate. Super nice to spend a Sunday afternoon before heading home after a stroll in Del Mar beach, catching up with friends. Service is top notch. Their salads are fresh and amazing.
