I like going here, it's a small campus and majority of the classes I took were small in size. For 2 of my 3 classes I had the same professor, he was really helpful and didn't mind staying a few minutes after class to answer questions. The only time I had an issue was when I first started making my schedule was that I was by the college counselor would transfer when I found out a few weeks into class they wouldn't. When I first picked my classes out I wanted to select the advanced photography class to learn more about lightroom and Photoshop. Beginning photography was a prereq but could be skipped due to prior experience (Freelance photographer for 6 years). I got the waiver paperwork filled out and emailed the dean of the department but never heard back. (It may have been too late as it was just a few weeks prior to the start of class) Otherwise this is a great place to finish core classes before transferring and it's cheap as well, I would definitely recommend SCC to someone that is looking for certificates or looking to learn something different. read more

Plenty of parking but it requires a paid token even during off hours & weekends. no easy wifi access. I can't use their pool even tho my taxes paid for it & I want to take classes for fun but the application process is daunting. It's expensive to attend & amenities are low. The on campus daycare doesn't match the class schedule so it's useless to me. The catalog keeps changing so am worried that even though I follow it, I could end up short of credits at graduation time. Overall, you need more staff to help folks navigate services. read more

I think that solano community college is a good fit for anyone wanting to learn. They really have your back if you are postively determined to get an good start in finishing your education as an individual accomplishment. Even if U haven't gone in a very longtime. I went in the early nineties to solano and it has changed for the better. I am impressed with the inclusitivity and kindness on an all around campus . The new buildings have stepped it up. I'm updating my review to let people know (transfer students, new college students, students in another system that wants to take classes here, whatever) that Solano CC is trying to have a LOT more online classes to help their students make most of their time/schedule. You should consider taking one of their online classes, I've signed up for two and they're good so far. The program isn't hard to use and the expense depends on the exact class you signed up for. solano.edu is the website you'd want to go on to see which classes are offered online. It's been years since I took courses at SCC and since then I've seen a few improvements that the college has made since I was last enrolled. New building for admissions, solar panel covers in the parking lot, new cafeteria, and a new bookstore. Personally I can't rate anything farther than their Biology/ Science departments since my major was specific in those subjects but I can say that the professors that I had were the most passionate professors that I've seen in teaching their courses. Yea, there's a few bad apples (Not saying any names, we all know the site to go to on that topic) but the best of the best is what made my educational path for my current career. For being a student of SCC's Science departments, I am in debt to their fantastic teachers in getting me to where I am today. Since Solano, I transfered out for my undergrad and one thing that I missed was the smaller classes, campus, and how I was able to speak to be professors on any questions that I had. Sure some of the students seem a bit sketchy and the smell of marijuana seems to be the common stench in the parking lot and near the cafeteria. But this is a JC, you're there for what you need and get out. This issue is common amongst many colleges and it's something you gotta live with. read more

Oh, main campus. While I appreciate that community college is much more affordable to continue your education, Solano definitely needs to step it up. Most of the classrooms I've been in either don't have AC or the heat working, whiteboards have been taken down to make way got white board paint (which, 4 months later, has still not been put up), there's always construction, parking lots could use some TLC, etc. You'd think with the amount of money the dean is paid that the facilities could get some love. Faculty is hit or miss. Some of them really enjoy their job and care about the students. Others are doing it for a paycheck and seem to despise the students they teach. Some respond right away and some don't respond to emails until 4 weeks later! I seriously have a professor during this semester who does not answer emails.... And it's an online course! Doesn't seem like there are set standards for all departments across the board. Solano has been publishing in the school newspaper that they're trying to rebrand and update their image. We'll see if it happens. Can't wait until I can transfer. read more

Rural location in outskirts of green valley. Small local adult education options. It's very limited on what programs are available, yet they have partnered with China to bring in exchange student programs. How does this serve Solano? Cafeteria is limited and keeps changing what actually works fir them. A baked potato bar was very successful until they started charging by weight. My first interaction with a counselor was unhelpful as most have been. They pushed me into classes they were trying to save instead of helping me build a workable schedule. If I'd stuck with THEY'RE recommendations I'd have been driving back n forth from Vacaville all day. I'm a single parent with limited daycare. I must have daytime classes close in time to each other. 2 of my first semester classes got canceled within a week so I had to revamp my whole schedule. Admin isn't helpful. Get real counselors u guys. The bookstore has some good options & tries to employ students whenever possible. I like the theater. The pool is lovely but should allow summer passes for locals to use it. read more

Considering I was a student here from 2005-2009, there's a lot I could say about Solano College. Overall, it's a decent school that will save you a ton of money. For newly graduated high school seniors, Solano College is not what they call "13th grade." While you may find many people your age, it's not like high school. There are higher expectations and instructors with a lot of experience--some even have PhDs. There's a good variety of courses; anything from philosophy to firefighting to welding. There are a ton of degree options and many can finish in just two years. However, for someone like me working full-time, it may take longer. Just be patient. Online classes and night classes (after 6pm) are extremely helpful for full-time workers and parents. The best part about Solano College is how much much money you SAVE. If you're planning to go for your Bachelors degree, Solano College is where you should start. The costs for four-year universities are on the rise, and Solano College offers the same curriculum offered to freshmen and sophomores at any California state school. By taking your first two years at Solano, you can save over $20,000 in tuition costs! Yes, I said over $20,000! Don't be fooled by Solano's reputation. I was accepted into every school I applied to (including UC Berkeley!). I successfully transferred to UC Davis. Plus, my Solano instructors prepared me well for the university atmosphere (I have all As!). While the counseling and admissions departments can be a total pain, Solano College gets four stars from me for two simple reasons: CONVENIENCE and STELLAR PROFESSORS! I'm having trouble rating this either 3 or 4 stars... But, let's see how this review goes. At the end, I'll make my decision. I have been a student here since Fall of 2008. There are so many things that I have seen and heard around campus. Some good and some bad. This is my last semester here before I transfer so maybe I should write something about this school... since I'm probably not going to come back anytime soon after transfer. Well, maybe except for French. I love studying it here. When I first got here, I thought this college was terrible. I was going to Sac State that Fall, but I was broke. My parents said, "You must go to this school. You'll save a bunch of money! And, no need for loans here!" Fine. I'll go.... I must say. It's not that bad. I mean, considering the price, ($20 a unit when I first started and by around Fall 09, the price was raised to $26 a unit), it is not that expensive. The costs do accumulate, but you can easily pay for it through the FAFSA and Cal Grant (if you qualify) and scholarships. There is also the BOGG waiver, which will waive the enrollment fees (aka tuition) at this school. I have qualified for the Cal Grant and the BOGG waiver so I pretty much paid ZERO DOLLARS for almost three years of college. I even got a part time job to save money for transfer. Community college pays off... especially when you have lots of money still left over from financial aid. :D The education is really good. I have heard back in my senior year of high school that community college has bad teachers and that learning is at high school level. In my years here, mostly every class is college level. There are easy classes and hard classes. It depends on the teacher too. By word of mouth (or mostly ratemyprofessors.com haha), you could find who they best teacher was. By the way, they have tons of classes here of many types (though the amount of classes offered here has changed due to our financial crisis in this country). Classes are small (at 50 or less people). Just about a year and a half ago there had been an accreditation crisis. The school was put on warning or probation or something and was at risk of being closed down. That would have sucked. The cafeteria has really good food. But, lately I have been either shortchanged or charged $7.25 for a stupid banana and fruit cup, when it should have been about $4. The prices are kind of high for me to buy anyway. So, I don't come here anymore. I bring my own food. Plus, I am not wasting money anymore for food and I'm feeding off my parent's food. Hahaha Much better. :D I hate the counseling department at this school. Those counselors are not that very helpful in anything. When I first started, they told me to take classes FOR THE WRONG MAJOR. :( I even told one that nutrition was my major and told me to take calculus (not required for where I wanted to go) just for fun... Hmmm. In college, there is little time for fun. That held me back a year now that many universities do not accept winter or spring transfers. After that I stopped listening to the counselors, except for when I wrote up my TAG agreement for UC Davis. They had some workshops, but I went to the UC Davis counselors and they are really helpful. My friend, just a few days ago, had been accidentally transferred to another college that she wasn't going to be attending until next fall and they dropped her classes without letting her know. Counseling department, what is wrong with you?! There are not that many events held here. The school is kind of dull and they don't have many interesting clubs here. Well, except French and maybe a few other clubs. If only they had a nutrition club. That would be awesome. You could sign up a club, but I have no time to be a President... I'd rather just be a member. haha To register, go to solano.edu. You'll get sent a school email address and have an online account to check grades, order transcripts, register for classes and so much more. I ended up giving it four stars. Took classes at Solano over the summer and didn't have any problems! It is much cheaper than the university I regularly attend, which was great. I had great experiences with two of my professors-in fact, they were two of the most thorough professors I have ever had the pleasure of learning from- and a rather poor experience with another. It is important to check ratemyprofessor.com before you enroll in a class because you will have to learn the hard way if not.. Trust me!! I have heard many complaints about the counselors, but personally haven't had any problems. Great place to take some classes over the summer if you want to get ahead! Solano is a good school with amazing teachers, great classes and OK counselors. The campus is really nice and clean, and most of the staff is really helpful. I have had the pleasure of getting many teachers that are so passionate about their subject that they made me really excited to take the class. The only reason I am giving the school 4/5 instead of 5/5 is the "OK" counseling department. There are plenty of counselors and the building is really nice, but NONE of the counselors I have met with were helpful. All of them kept pushing me to go to assist.org to see what classes I needed. Its a great school, but many things had happened. The library printing is not free anymore. In order to get tutoring, we got to get the teacher to sign the tutoring paper, just to get a tutor. That is not okay because that will be discouraging for most people that I know. In fact, I have to encourage most people to get tutoring in order to do better in class. Having a teacher decide if we need a tutor or not is a horrible idea because getting a tutor should be much easier. Another thing that I dislike is, students had defaced the practice rooms in the music building. I used to practice in order to pass time, I cannot do that anymore. It is strictly banned now. Teachers had lost their passion and it didn't used to be this way. I feel like I am in high school again, attending this college again after nine years of being a professional as a chef. I had changed my career because of the economy; I don't want to go to another private university because they are too expensive. So, I decided to go with Solano because of the Auto program. I have mixed feelings about how the program is. I really dislike it when, I had passed a class and I cannot take it again. "What if I didn't learn anything, and I need to take it again?" "What if it is a vocational program, and I needed to go over the material again to be much more confident with what I had learned?" The teachers for the program are great but the way things are now, kind of make me want to go to a different school. Some changes need to occur, and the college atmosphere needs to mature. The college needs to have a study atmosphere and not a laid back party atmosphere. How can anyone do well in a campus where other students mistreat the students that are trying to do well. I had this problem two semesters in a row. When registering for classes, everything much be planned out or the person will have limited choices. When it comes to financial aid, I feel like I am alone to fend for myself. There are no counselors for financial aid. If a person want counselors, they might have to go to another college, like Diablo Valley College (DVC) in order to get the individual, one on one care, that a financial aid counselor provides. The reason why I gave SCC two stars? Well, In 2000, they were very helpful. They helped with reading, writing, music, typing, speaking, coping, study, people skills and many other different soft skills. These skills assisted in most of the opportunities I had later in life. Now, helpful? well, not so much... When I came back to SCC in 2014, my favorite college atmosphere had taken a severe beating. I don't know if the old spirit of Solano College will rise anymore. It might be dead. Many of the original teachers are gone. Many of the new teachers, that I had met for the first time, has an informal approach. The moment that I had shown some enthusiasm for the material that was being taught, I was sat down and was told after class, "I am being disruptive! I need to go to the back and be quiet." (Does SCC do anything about teacher complaints? The question we should be asking, does the government do anything to representatives who goes awol? Then, we can get our answer. Make friends with our counselor they can help in many ways.) Being told, "I am being disruptive," really took the fun out of learning when the teacher did that. The worse part is, it was a music class where participation is required. I was a music major at Pacific Union College in Napa. The music class at SCC was supposed to be a fun class. At the start of the class it turned out to be a difficult course and I am an Engineering major. If anyone has an idea of joining SCC, be prepared to be not trusted by teachers, mistreated by other students for being an overachiever, and left alone to fend for oneself especially during financial aid time. However, during class registration time, counselors will be able to help; be sure to have a counselor because they will be useful. Keeping up with the transfer center counselor will also be vital because of the information they have if we are transferring. Please keep focus on why we are at the campus because without focus, our vision might become hazy after some time. There are many other things going on at Solano so please be aware of why we are at Solano and keep those grades up. My plan is to maintain the (3.0) GPA at all times because it is the requirement for all Engineers. Last semester, I had a (3.5) GPA and this spring semester, I want the same or higher like (4.0). I value hard work, places to study and passionate teachers. Solano College has the library, Cafeteria that is loud all the time, ASSC room located in student services building 1400, and the tutoring center (no food or drinks allowed is common on campus especially inside the tutoring room. Just focus on work and things will go smoothly at Solano. Other than those things above, Solano is a great college to attend. read more

Naturally for me, it was depressing to go from my first year at a huge state college living in the dorms to going back to living at home and going to small community college. State school got expensive and I realized I wanted to transfer to an art school somewhere else so it didn't make sense to stay at state and pay all that money when community college was simply cheaper. However, as a school I think it's pretty decent. Compared to the state school I went to, it's a lot more ghetto and people are never really rushing anywhere besides the parking lot or bus stop to go home. But as shady as some of the people may look sometimes, everyone's actually really friendly. I just wish the campus were bigger or we could walk to the mall or something, for people who can't drive or have to take the bus. The cafeteria is really small and you easily start to recognize the people there. The cafeteria food is aiiight and their bookstore is cute. The building with the cafeteria and bookstore is the more lively, social place on the entire campus. The library has some socializing but not much and it's kinda dark in there ... at least in the lobby. But they do have a big library and lots of computers there to just do whatever without being told not to. But they block Facebook. Haha. Ummm they have a really good theatre program. Nationally recognized, actually. They have children's and youth theatre and I've been watching performances there since I was little. Loved them all. TAKE Stage Makeup class here! Everyone I have asked said it was awesome. BJ the teacher is awesome. I'm taking her class right now. It's one of those hidden gems, I think. You learn things from her that you think you'd need to go to special fx makeup school for. For community college a lot of the teachers are actually passionate. But use RateMyProfessor.com ~ in my opinion it's better to have a passionate, helpful teacher for a subject you don't really like than a subject you kind of like and a terrible, useless teacher. They have SO many majors haha. It's almost like cherry picking or being like in candy shop choosing classes. I was so used to being told NOPE you can't be in that class. We really had to fight people for classes at state but at Solano registration is much more chill and there's soo many majors and programs to choose from ... you can really explore your choices here AND/OR get GE's done. And for much cheaper. The bus fare here is expensive. $5 one way to Vallejo. Guh. And I thought SF's muni was expensive! If you need to ride the bus buy monthly or 10 day passes from the bookstore. Or make friends and get a carpool. Or get a car. The buses are a bit unpredictable even though there's a schedule. the 85 stops by Fairfield mall though. Then comes back for Vallejo. A parking lot spot thingy that you put in your car that says you can be parked there is $20 per semester I think? Or per year. If you get a counseling appointment, try to choose a good counselor otherwise you're wasting your time. Ask around or find reviews or something. A bad counselor will make you loose faith in all counselors and waste one hour of your life. A good one will lead you in the right direction and save you time and make sure you have the right classes to get to where you want to be! McDaniels is one of the best counselors at Solano to date :) She's like The Oracle from The Matrix. :D What else can I say. Well the campus gets deserted after like 2 PM. It's pretty lively from the morning til then. Then it gets real quiet. I'll only be here for awhile but if you choose the right teachers, you can save a lot of money going here, get a pretty good education and get set to wherever you want to go. It's a very mixed group of people considering race and age. There's people fresh out of H.S., transfers from other colleges, middle aged people, very elderly people with a lust for learning, army reserve students, single parents - you name it. The vibe about campus is people just kind of want to get things done ... unlike on other campuses it really is circulated around a kind of party life, here, it's like a transfer station. No one wants to really waste time. It's a good school, really. What makes it really good is if you get lucky and get a class with a passionate teacher and passionate students who care more about what's the homework and how they're being graded. 3 stars because I wish it was a bit more lively, closer to more civilization and more hmm ... more food maybe. I'm an on-again-off-again student here. I don't feel like I was personally encouraged to transfer, or to attain an associate's degree (not that I would anyway I guess). I have found a love of learning finally. The registration process is a lot easier than it used to be, you can visit their website at solano.edu to: register for classes; purchase a parking permit; drop a class; you have email through their site as well. The school is going through an accreditation review, but it looks like all is well. They also offer very affordable child-care. BUT SIGN UP EARLY! There is usually a wait list for the little ones. They are very hands-on, and proactive with the child's development. They also try to emulate your parenting style so as not to confuse the child. read more

The campus for all the money they have/had to spend, is lacking a great deal. The class rooms are not maintained (is it hard to keep the floors clean or the lawn decent). Also the courses they offer have went to zip unless you are a Math or Science major, if you are not then you need to think about other colleges. This campus has the highest tuition in the region (look around to other colleges, do not let the distance from your home to the college trap you into one campus). I have applied for nursing online. I haven't heard back from them..and few months later, I found out that I was actually registered for a class. I was forced to withdraw and request they to contact me. Nobody from SCC has contacted me. I applied FAFSA...and they told me that I need to go to Finance tab and see if I need to submit anything. I found few documents...and asked if I could fax it over...they said they don't accept any fax...only by mail or drop off. I have contacted Couneling department to contact me. Still to the day, I have wasted almost a whole year trying to get ONE class so I can get started with nursing program. And yet, I'm being charged for a class even I didn't take it. Not going to pursue SCC! Going to find other school that will work with me. read more

I was an aircraft maintenance major with a minor in 2d art. My instructors were great but i chose the tough classes that wanted to teach students. I've heard theres easy "C" classes but I avoided those. My biggest issue with this school is being a veteran and dealing with the counselors. The employees of this school DO NOT understand the curriculum or classes. If you are using the GI Bill prepare for hours of arguments with these unskilled morons that run the place. The police also like to use the campus for war-games and terrorism training. If you have PTSD be prepared to experience it. SCC has the potential to be an amazing school but it seems to love sitting on the couch and getting by. read more

Small class sizes are something you will miss if you transfer elsewhere, so take advantage of the time you have with these professors. Get paper work early as they are infamous for fouling it up, especially transcripts. Some of the professors are of equal quality to what you would get at a university but not all of the students take the courses seriously and it ends up as 13th grade. read more

It's more like a continuation of high school. I like the mix of students in the classroom: You've got your fresh outta hs grads, middle-aged folk, single parents, and due to its proximity to Travis AFB, military men and women. Classes are small, which I appreciate now looking back after having classes with hundreds of other students at State. It got me through the first two years of college before I transferred. Getting through administration can sometimes be a pain, but overall, no real complaints. read more

Classes and teachers are not bad. My complaint is the administrative offices. It takes FOREVER to talk to an actual person, and when you miraculously get through, they aren't helpful at all.
