After doing my research as a diligent pre-med, Touro has an osteopathic medical school with other graduate programs as well. Interested in their school, my friend and I scheduled a shadowing opportunity with their outreach admin/faculty. One of the shadowing opportunities they offer is for the OMM Lab (osteopathic manipulative medicine) where one can sit in their medical school class alongside their real medical students and learn! I shadowed one of their cranial OMM labs, and it was fascinating especially since I was into neurobio/psych. Their professor was very thorough in explaining the various ways on how to locate cranial anatomy and how to connect with the patient. Each student rotated and had a chance to practice OMM and experience it as well. From the time of initial contact to the end of my shadowing, Touro faculty and students were very accommodating and positively receptive. Big shoutouts to my medical student mentors, Jessie and Yvonne, who showed me the ropes and Jessie even performed OMM on me! Great time with wonderful people!

One of my cousins, a woman, was just Honorably Discharged from the US Coast Guard after four years of enlisted Active Duty Service right out of high school. She asked us if we would attend her first visit to Cal Maritime. She had chosen to use her Veterans Educational Benefits at Cal Maritime during her inactive US Coast Guard Reserve four-year duty because the average Marine Transportation major who graduates from a school in the United States earns about $82,250 per year during the starting years of their career. Graduates with bachelor's degrees in this field make 107% more than the average college graduate salary of $39,802. Cal Maritime has the highest employment rate in the CSU system - 94% within three months of graduation. 94% of Cal Maritime's graduates go directly into for-profit companies, non-profit organizations, government agencies, or graduate schools while 8% graduate as commissioned officers in the military. My cousin plans to graduate Cal Maritime as a commissioned officer in the US Navy in the Navy Supply Corps and have the Navy pay for her graduate degree in Cybersecurity as she plans to spend 26 years in the Navy for a total of 30 years of Active Duty and four years of Reserve US military Service with her years with the Coast Guard. Upon retirement from the Navy, she plans to go US Navy Reserve while doing a second career in US government like the Federal Maritime Commission or private sector. California State University Maritime Academy, a prestigious small public school located in the city of Vallejo, California earned the #2 spot in the 2021 rankings for Marine Transportation degrees. Marine Transport majors who obtain their bachelor's from Cal Maritime start with an average salary of $90,700. The Marine Transportation (MT) major provides a broad understanding of the maritime industry, as well as navigation and ship-handling skills. Coursework and three training cruises prepare one to be a mate on a large ship, tug, or ferry, or to work in a variety of shoreside positions such as port and terminal management, stevedoring or marine sales. In addition to the Bachelor's Degree, one will earn a license from the U.S. Coast Guard as a Third Mate. This license allows one to sail on U.S. ships on any ocean, regardless of tonnage, horsepower and size. America's Maritime History spans the centuries from Native American and Viking maritime activities before Columbus through today's maritime enterprise. "The maritime history of shipping in America is built on the work and help of the American Merchant Marine. The first war that an organized United States Merchant Marine took part in was the American Revolutionary War. The first Merchant Marine action in the war took place on June 12, 1775 when a group of Machias, Maine citizens boarded and captured a British schooner, the warship HMS Margaretta. No industry has been more vital to the success of our country than that of America's maritime industry. The industry provides jobs for hundreds of thousands of Maritime Americans in every corner of our nation--from longshoremen in ports along our four seacoasts, to towboat operators navigating the Mississippi, to shipbuilders in East Coast dry docks, to the men and women who crew American-flag vessels of all types. The American maritime industry moves cargo and America's troops around the world in far greater volume, with far greater efficiency, than any other transportation mode. As a first line of defense, it also proudly helps ensure greater homeland security. The maritime industry transports commercial goods more cost effectively than trucks and rails--while providing the most environmentally sound mode of transportation. The industry's humanitarian role is one that paints a positive picture of America worldwide, as it distributes food to the world's poor and responds to global emergencies. And, the industry stands as a primary driver of trade in one of the world's largest economies." https://www.google.com/search?q=Veterans+Educational+Benefits+cal+maritime&rlz=1C1GCEA_enUS878US878&ei=0g4_YvDiD7ifkPIP2-mBoA0&ved=0ahUKEwjwk5__6uP2AhW4D0QIHdt0ANQQ4dUDCA4&uact=5&oq=Veterans+Educational+Benefits+cal+maritime&gs_lcp=Cgdnd3Mtd2l6EAMyBQghEKABMgUIIRCrAjIFCCEQqwI6BwgAEEcQsAM6BQgAEIAEOgYIABAWEB46CAgAEBYQChAeOgUIABCGAzoICCEQFhAdEB5KBAhBGABKBAhGGABQhANY1x5gvyJoAXABeACAAXuIAdIKkgEDNi43mAEAoAEByAEIwAEB&sclient=gws-wiz http://catalog.csum.edu/content.php?catoid=8&navoid=499 https://www.csum.edu/financial-aid/veterans.html https://www.csum.edu/registrar/veterans.html

Richie and Ashley from Career services were a big help throughout the program, and were super fast at responding when I had questions. I felt that I learned a lot from my on campus teachers/mentors Ms. Crain, Ms. Oliver, and Ms. James, as well as from my online experience with Ms. Dori and Ms. Kaur. They took their time in explaining each subject in depth so that we could understand. They definitely have prepared me for the medical field. This program was absolutely worth it and I see myself going back to Unitek in the future to further my education.

First of all I would like to say, if you got a scholarship through Futuro with Kaiser and you get in this program planning on ever working at Kaiser when you get out, just please delete that idea from your mind. That's the whole reason why I took this course through Futuro, come to find out at extern time, Kaiser isn't even contracted with Unitek or Futuro (make it make sense) to do your extern there so right there my whole plan of getting an extern at Kaiser and hopefully landing a job there after graduation was just shattered!!! instead, I was constantly offered an extern making it seem like DaVita was the only option. DaVita has a huge turn around hiring rate for extern with Unitech so it makes the school look really good as if their program graduates get hired quickly after completion. Which they do at DaVita if you want an $18-$20 an hour pay rate and absolutely not doing any medical assisting at all while you're there, so it just completely ruins everything that you learned in the medical assisting program. Not to mention, I was there for seven months and we had five different teachers.. again make it make sense? We will learn things from one teacher, and then all of a sudden they would leave, and the new teacher that came in would tell us we were doing things incorrectly and we would have to relearn some of the things over to the new teachers liking. Bottom line, it is just an extremely unbelievably unorganized program, there is no consistency with teaching, there's no accuracy as far as what we learned because the next teacher will teach us a different way, and the online teacher that I had was just absolutely terrible. She would explain nothing and dock your grade, you could send her several messages with no response and even when you would reach out to the higher up, they wouldn't even respond back to you, and they were in the same building in Concord! They also left there too by the way and I heard that they had been there for years and got let go. So yah, this program needs to be shut down and then opened up by all new upper hand that actually know what they're doing and how to run a beneficial MA program. I've graduated the program a while back and I still yet to land a decent paying medical assisting job, the highest I've been offered is $20 an hour and honestly if I wanted to, I can go work at target for $22 an hour. In the end, I feel like it was just such a waste of time and I would actually be livid if I didn't go through the scholarship program and get granted to take it, and actually paid the $15,000 out of pocket to take it. What a mess this place is... good luck to all who try it

The catalog keeps changing so am worried that even though I follow it, I could end up short of credits at graduation time. Overall, you need more staff to help folks navigate services.
