I've been wanting to have a solar installation for a long time, but was intimidated by the complexity of the technical details coupled with what I feared would be a huge cash outlay. The Solar Solution team was helpful, knowledgeable, and very pleasant to deal with from start to finish. They explained the technology and the complex permit process, as well as the tax and grant processes. They handled all the paperwork for our DC grant. Between the DC grant and the Federal tax credit 70% of our installation was paid for. Now we're gaining credits instead of monster electric bills during A/C season. We also elected to become "partners" with Pepco and Solar handled all that paperwork too. We get a nice not-so-little check every quarter for the SRECs that our system produces. I had a very disappointing experience with Solar Solutions and would not recommend them. First, I referred my neighbor to them after being told I'd receive a $600 referral credit -- I never got it. [[HIGHLIGHT]]When it came time to get panels on my own roof before the tax credit deadline, the process turned into weeks of back-and-forth.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] At first, they agreed to a price match with a competitor, and I also asked that their 10-year roof leak warranty be extended to 15 years, which they initially agreed to. However, when it came time to sign, they raised the price without any discussion, refused to honor the price match, and said it "should never have been offered." They also bad-mouthed the competitor (which came across as unprofessional) and told me it was essentially "take it or leave it." [[HIGHLIGHT]]Given the limited time to secure the tax credit, this was incredibly frustrating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I walked away -- I would rather not install solar at all than work with a company that operates like this. To make matters worse, my neighbor's project (the one I referred) was mishandled as well. His roof needed repairs before solar panels could be installed. Solar Solutions told him they'd address it, but they didn't -- they just installed the panels anyway. When my roofer came out for my home, he also inspected my neighbor's and confirmed the roof needed major repair. My neighbor then had to call Solar Solutions back to remove all the panels so the roof could be fixed. What a mess. In short: broken promises, unprofessional conduct, and careless work. I don't recommend this company unless you want constant headaches about roof leaks, poor customer service, and spending the money you make on SRECs on fixing damage from their installation to your roof and interior. Read on if you want the details. (I'm giving 2 stars because the panels do work.) I had my solar system installed on the roof of my house in Washington, DC in early 2023. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Initially, the process went pretty smoothly.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I specifically asked their sales rep about roof leaks after panels are installed because I'd heard this was an issue. My roof was newly installed only 5 years or so before I wanted to install solar panels and I had no issues with the roof. The sales person reassured me that there would be no leak issues and that the installation came with a 10 year warranty. Since they'd been around awhile and did not seem to be at risk of going out of business, I went with Solar Solution. Within a year, I started having problems with roof leaks, as evidenced by water stains on the ceiling of my upstairs bathroom. Solar Solution was prompt at first, fixed cracks in the place where the posts met the roof, and repaired the ceiling in my bathroom, though I had to ask their guy to come out and do it again because one time he essentially painted over the stain with the wrong colored paint and didn't repair the drywall. [[HIGHLIGHT]]In July of this year, I started noticing more stains in the ceiling of the upstairs bath, so I called Solar Solutions again and they sent out workers promptly who went up on the roof and declared that the problem was "water in the roof" and not the solar panels.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They recommended a roofer, who said the wood under the roof was rotten and needed to be replaced (how this happened on a roof that was nearly new when the solar panels were installed was a mystery to me). That fix cost me $1600. Within two weeks, the stains returned, and then I also started getting stains on the ceiling in the kitchen (one floor below). So I attempted to get that roofer to return but got an automatic email reply saying his company had gone out of business. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I complained to Solar Solution again. They apologized and sent out a new roofer they were working with.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] This person said the other roofer did not correctly fix the roof -- they failed to install the necessary membrane. This made my roof issues even worse than before, as I now had water traveling down the interior walls of my house into the main floor! He fixed the issue and charged me $600. I asked him if he had noticed any other problems where water might be getting in. He said no. Solar Solution offered to pay half the cost of fixing the drywall in the upstairs bath and kitchen. They said they had a really good drywall guy who did the work in their owner's house. I agreed, but within two weeks of Roofer #2's supposed fix of the roof, I noticed more severe staining in the ceiling near my upstairs bath, so I called Solar Solution to come out again. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Once again, they came out promptly and declared that there was no problem with the panels.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] According to them, I had "water in my roof." Again, I told the rep at Solar Solution, who sent an email to me and Roofer #2, asking that he come out to check it out. I heard nothing from Roofer #2, so I went about getting my own estimates from roofers to fix the roof. I selected a company who found (among other things) that there were cracks in the silicone in the posts of the panels that attach to the roof. This roofer fixed the problem-- there have been no more leaks since-- but it cost me $3,850. I told Solar Solution what the roofer had found and asked that they cover the portion of the bill that had to do with properly sealing the posts (about $1400). They said that I should have run that by them first and they'd "look into it." This is ridiculous, because I tried to work with their recommended roofer (Roofer #2), BUT HE NEVER RESPONDED! And, a roof leak of that size is AN URGENT MATTER! [[HIGHLIGHT]]I then tried to get them to fix the drywall in my ceiling (both upstairs bath and kitchen) because they'd offered to pay for half that cost. Solar Solution said they'd be sending their "really great drywall guy" to do the job today (December 12), but provided no arrival time.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I emailed them this morning to ask when he was supposed to show. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I've texted their rep. No reply.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I don't care if your drywall guy did work in Buckingham Palace; he's no good if he doesn't show up. Looks like I'm going to have to find someone on my own to fix the drywall and pay for it out of pocket. So much for their offer to split the cost for that. It's been months of headaches and I will spend probably the equivalent of two years of SRECs on these issues that DID NOT EXIST before I installed solar panels. (Incidentally, three roofers who went up on my roof to look at it said it was installed correctly, so it's not a bad roof.) read more

Atrocious company! Agressive salesman told me everything would be included when I bought my system which I paid full price for. It took months to get installed. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Then their rep yelled at me and was very condecending when I told him the salesman said everything was included so why were they asking for an additional $450 for a modem and charging me an additional $99 to hook up the wi-fi?[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]He talked over me, wouldn't let me speak to the salesman and told me he knew the salesman wouldn't have said that even though this jerkwas not there or even working with this company so they just out and out lied[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It took 2 weeks to get an appointment to set up the wi-fi but the tech didn't show up and didn't answer my emails and phone calls and neither did the owner so I had to wait over a month before he actually showed up![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] When it was set up I found out they put my system offline for over 10 months which they are responsible for. Instead I got nasty emails from their tech guy telling me it wasn't their responsibility even though the system is under warranty. TL;DR: We picked Solar Solution because of their excellent local reputation, and they were able to match a competitor's price. We are satisfied with the installation, but prospective customers should be prepared to wait... it took nearly six months from the time we had a contract signed to the time our panels were installed and switched on. I also wish they had installed a consumption meter with the panels. Read on if you want the full details of our process! After seeing some neighborhood yard signs advertising Solar Solution and upon the recommendation of some friends, we reached out to get a quote. We knew we wanted to own the system and were fine with selling our SREC credits up front to offset the initial installation costs - this is something that anyone installing solar in DC ought to consider carefully, the SREC credits will likely be worth more over time than they are up front, but we were interested in maximizing value immediately. We got a reasonable initial quote, and I uploaded it to EnergySage to see if any other local installers could beat it. We got a quote with a lower price per watt from a different installer, and Solar Solution matched it. I was sold - we signed the installation contract in November 2021. Pepco granted permission to install the system on December 10, 2021, and Solar Solution sent someone out to perform a structural assessment in early February. We heard from Solar Solution shortly afterward that DCRA wouldn't let us install solar on the roof unless we added additional structural support. This seemed unlikely, as our house was fully renovated in 2016 and had a new roof put on. Solar Solution sent out another crew to double check, and it turned out they had overlooked the support beam that was installed during the renovation during their first site visit. I can understand how this happened - we don't have an access panel to the attic, so the teams removed a can light from one of our bedroom ceilings to perform the inspection. In March, Solar Solution reported that they would need to downsize the installation from 18 panels to 16 to meet DCRA code regulations. We signed off on the modification, and finally saw that permits were filed in early April. The DCRA permit process took exactly three weeks from the time the application was filed until approval. Once permits were issued, the installation was scheduled within two weeks of permits being issued. Solar Solution sent their inspector the following week, and two days later Pepco granted Permission to Operate. Our system is performing as expected, and overall, we are satisfied with the installation. We ended up with a 7.12kW system consisting of 16 Boviet Solar 445W panels. They were paired with Enphase IQ7+ micro-inverters, which max out at around 290W of A/C output (or 4.64kW total). That's a big ratio, but makes sense given the westward orientation of our roof - we'll lose some output during the peak sunlight hours but the size and number of panels on our roof will help us capture more energy during non-peak hours, making up the difference. By my calculations, we'll offset about 85% of our energy usage over 12 months with the system. I'm a big data nerd, so I've got a couple of nagging issues. I wish we had been given the option to install the Enphase consumption meters along with our system, as the app tells us how much power is being produced, but not how much we are consuming and/or exporting to the grid. This would be nice to have. The consumption meters retail for $50 and I would have happily paid double that for this convenience at installation, but Solar Solution quoted me $750 to install them after the fact. We'll probably add them on later when we upgrade our electrical panel to support an EV charger and can roll the price into existing electrical work. Finally, the Enphase Envoy Controller they installed is connected to our home WiFi network, but also includes a cellular modem. For whatever reason, it prefers to report its data over the cellular connection, which limits updates to every 6 hours... far longer than I would like to wait for production data! It also appears that the firmware on the device is very old (circa 2018) which means it likely has some security vulnerabilities - I've segmented the device to a walled-off portion of the network to mitigate these, but it's unlikely that the average consumer would have the ability to do this. Hopefully there's a firmware update coming. At the end of the day, I would recommend Solar Solution to anyone looking for a quality solar installation in the District, but be prepared to have some patience with the process. read more

We had a terrible experience trying to get these people to remove the panels from our house. We told them we were selling and asked them to remove the equipment. The contract we signed with them specifically said we could have the system removed when we were going to sell. Their rep. ignored us, lied to us about what our contract said, ignored the NEW owners when they said they didn't want the panels, and generally refused to do what we were asking. Repeated telephone calls and emails by both ourselves and the new owners felt like we were banging our heads against the proverbial brick wall. It took OVER A MONTH before they would even schedule a date when their contractor finally took the system away. Then a few days ago I get a call from one of their people. It seems somone lost the system after it was removed. Thankfully it's no longer my problem. A last note for Solar Solutions execs: We moved to another home in DC. Because of all the BS I had to got through your company is NOT IN THE RUNNING for the solar system we are planning to put on our new house. I'm not sure who it will be yet, but it won't be you. Honestly, I wanted to hold off with my review in fairness of knowing Solar Solutions business has picked up and they are extremely busy and we understand. And yes, we are a customer and love our system so far. However - We would like to suggest maybe a touch up in the sales (main) office when it comes to professional behavior. Our original Sales Person (Rob Taylor) came to our home and sold it perfectly and we signed up. We had to get roof work done first but Solar Solutions waited and we are a solar family. In the process of getting this done we called the office and spoke to Kathleen DePorter to let them know we were ready for the installation and we were kind of hoping to hear from Rob who was included in all emails but never heard from him to this day, to maybe say "Thanks". Kathleen did a great job with getting us set up from permits, installation, Pepco and the final connection. We also wanted to help Solar Solutions and I started to refer my colleagues at work who live in DC and I referred a family (Saulters) to Rob and I mentioned this also to Kathleen in hopes and respect to the referral bonus and not sure what's going on (no communication) but we haven't received or heard from anyone explaining why this hasn't happen. Presently, I sent an email to Kathleen and Rob Taylor referring a second person from my office (Ramsey) and hadn't heard from anyone for a week now; nor had my colleague; I decided to call and speak with Kathleen on behalf of my colleague who asked me if I heard anything and how he's very interested and a bit disappointed that he hasn't heard from anyone at Solar Solutions to simply discuss setting up an appointment. Lastly, I recently called (today) and spoke with a (Peter) who started explaining to me how to submit a referral and I explained to him I wasn't calling about referral information but to have someone call my colleague who is interested in Solar Solutions and he (Peter) started with taking the information and he stated he would contact (Ramsey) almost immediately however when the conversation was coming to a closing, it seemed Peter slammed the phone in my ear. I've had solo solutions for a couple of years and everything was fine in the beginning for the past six months their equipment has been faulty on my house I've been calling them repeatedly every month the electrical company and bills are telling me power is going back into the grid but I am not getting any more savings from the Solar solution. they told me on7/28/22 that they would be coming to my house to put a new meter in and never came when I came home from work I called them and they told me they fix the problem on my computer from there end when I asked month prior I was told that I would be getting all the savings reimbursed. Adding solar panels to the roof of my historic row house on Capitol Hill was easy thanks to Solar Solutions. They clearly explained the financials and various options just using aerial imagery of my roof. They took on all permits and coordination with PEPCO. They installed the solar panels and connected in to my electrical service in a way that was entirely seamless with no exposed cables or drywall patching inside. The installation took about four hours. They sent a tech over to configure my inverter with my Wi-Fi network so I have a virtual meter. Terri Holtz was a breath of fresh air. Solar solutions is definitely the way to go if you want good customer service and an amazing solar partner. This was our third attempt to go to go solar and is quite the interesting saga. I'll put my 3rd attempt first because it highlights Terri. 3rd Attempt: I reached out to Solar Solutions and got Terri Holtz on the phone. I actually reached out to another solar company to get more than one bid and decided to got with Terri because of her professionalism and genuine caring about our well being as her customer. She walked us through all of the options and my wife and I landed on purchasing the system outright. She even was able to help us finance the system at 0% APR for 16 months (the usual is 12 months but she got it extended for us). We got a 9.8KW system which will pay itself off in about 4-5 years. Couldn't be more happy with our experience and looking forward to continuing our relationship with Terri and Solar Solutions. 1st Attempt: Solar City. We spoke with them for a couple weeks before they were dissolved, so that was a bust. 2nd Attempt: Vivint Solar. These guys are the absolute worst. If you want a bad customer experience from start to finish, don't go with them. We actually singed a contract with them for the lease option, which doesn't make sense because I live in DC where the SRECs are the highest in the country, which they did not explain. After radio silence for 3 months, I called them several times until I reached someone who said that they had sent out structural analyst to look at my house (which they had definitely not) and said that my house couldn't hold the weight of the panels. So not only were they not going to tell me that they cancelled out contract, but they also lied to me that they sent someone to my house. Solar Solutions is definitely the way to go if you're thinking of going solar. They will treat you with care and respect and make sure you ask for Terri Holtz. read more

I rarely write reviews, but given the nature of this service, I thing it is important for buyers to beware. Everything from start to finish has been complicated and poorly executed. The panels were installed leaning over my neighbor's roof. The installation took months to schedule and nobody communicated with me. The installation was not explained and they left a mess, that I had to clean up. The system has been offline for weeks and they don't monitor it. They are disorganized and only focused on sales. We had solar panels installed on our roof a couple years ago. Overall the customer service was extremely lackluster. We had an issue where the next door neighbors were planning to do some roof work that would affect the flashing, and so were concerned about impact. The sales person was not very considerate of the concerns of the neighbor, saying basically 'you can pay us to move it if you need to.' When they first installed it was too high and we got a citation from historic preservation - Solar Solution was quick to remedy but they should have known about this in the first place. Recently, in asking for information about what to do when selling our house and transferring ownership I have not been able to even get a callback from the company. They offer a referral bonus if we tell friends about them if the friend buys panels, but I can't in good faith recommend them to anyone I'm friends with even if they're paying me $500 to do it. If you use them you'll get solar panels and they'll be installed fine, but you won't get much other customer support or assistance. I'd recommend looking elsewhere. read more

Our experience with Solar Solution has been consistently positive from the quotation/bidding phase through the time of installation and subsequent customer service follow ups. Our 14 panel solar array (3.22 kW) was installed in one day back in April 2011. It has proven to be one of the best investments that we have ever made. The financial incentives in the District of Columbia are so attractive that I if you have a suitable location with plentiful hours of sun you are crazy not to look at solar power. The payback period for our set up was originally 5.6 years but with the recent major increase in value of Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs) this will be shortened. Solar Solution managed (and continue to manage) the whole SREC payment process as well as ensuring that we received the DC Credit of 30% of the total installation costs. The Federal Gov pays another 30% Solar Solution provided all of the necessary paperwork and follow up. In addition, Solar Solution were very helpful in dealing with their contacts in PEPCO to expedite the installation of the new 'smart' meter that is part of a solar installation. We've had a couple of very minor issues since installation and the company responded immediately to address the issues. In short, Atta and his crew are great to work with and we would recommend them to anyone considering solar power without hesitation. read more

From my first point of contact with Robert Taylor through permitting, installation, and then the walkthrough with Harlan Lyles, Solar Solutions made everything easy. Robert was recommended by a neighbor. He was knowledgeable, professional and also took care of all of the paperwork. I had been on the fence about solar for a while and my interaction with Robert is what finally convinced me to make the jump. At the end of the process, Harlan walked us through everything we would need to do to ensure our system was working and taught us how to monitor. Got our solar panels installed - we are confirmed customers. I should have weighed my opportunity costs and compared other alternatives brands more that would have delivered better value and satisfaction. Details below on multiple painpoints... The pain point in my experience with them was that their crew didn't clean up at all after the install and left thousands of particles of small metal debris over our lawn and new landscaping. I spent 2 hrs over a period of 2 days cleaning it up. It took so long because I had to pick each little shred of aluminum up... those pieces also got tracked in the house. Furthermore, they drilled a hole in one brick wall and left the debris there on the cement - no clean up afterwards. They're supposed to be green but they allow so much micro debris back into the environment during installations. Not cleaning up after the work (which should be best practice for all installations) is a violation of a reasonable person expectation of not having to invest (waste) your own time into cleaning up after someone's mess left due to them rushing through project tasks and not clean up in order to cut costs - that cost cutting comes at the expense of my personal time. It's like - the installation is complete, thanks for doing business with us [slap on face]. To me, that's either a reflection of poor company culture or poor management, or both. The moral position of a company operating under these terms on residential job sites should be to leave a jobsite at least as clean as it was found and not let micro debris get into the environment. On top of this all, we were told by the sales rep Melissa D. that the rebate was 30% while what we were actually going to get was 26%. When we made a big deal about the hopefully unintentional misinformation we were given, they retroactively gave us the 30% all while they raised the total cost by 16%. I'm a business executive - I get maintaining margins so there are no project budget overruns, but 4x the 4% difference (26% to 30%) in the rebate is ridiculous. That's a waste and abuse of economic resources (seeing as DC government is issuing rebates and ultimately paying most of the costs). Lastly, we're now questioning if we could have just gone with another company and got a better quote for owning these rather than going with the rebate program. I'm very dissatisfied right now. Make sure you shop around and get other quotes before going with this company. Be very cautious, be a rational consumer with this. We allowed the referral of a friend to this company cloud our better judgment. Consider other companies! read more

Signed our agreement with Solar Solutions in February. Told solar panels would be installed in April. April came and went. Followed up in May ...weeks went by with no response. Panels were installed late July. October we learn half of the panels are not operating. Send someone out. Still don't work. No one responding. Gonna need to change spelling to CUSStomer service - not the best. Still wondering when/if we will have operational panels. read more

It was a welcome break to talk to a company who knows DC permit regulations, timeline and technical details of various panels available. Antonio cut all the sales talk and got to the subject that really mattered and I can't recommend anyone better.
