Having received several solar bids in 2014 when I was first exploring the option of going solar (and no less than eight more here in 2019), it was immediately apparent that the majority of outfits were content to send out a salesman with minimal to no engineering experience. These high volume factory installers would, without exception, offer a minimally detailed proposal that did not take into account my personal goals for the project, and in many cases were not even code compliant. Alfred at Solar Xpress took the time to discuss various options and explain in detail why (or why not) certain ideas could work or where we might run into potential issues with permitting and inspection. Initially, his bid was not the most competitive that I had received, but his inspection was the most thorough and after discussing other proposals that I had received, he was willing to negotiate a contract that I was happy to accept. His attention in dealing with my city's burdensome permitting and inspection processes, as well as his communication with me regarding the progress at all stages of this project, was admirable to say the least. His electrical crew, Mike, Mario and Tony, were friendly and skilled in their trade, and made an extra effort to work around aspects of our garden that we hold dear, going so far as to dig out and relocate a few plants so that they would not get damaged during the construction phase of our system. With all said and done, Solar Xpress proved flexible and upheld all of their agreements. They were happy to use whatever hardware I requested, and were able to adapt to some issues that came up with my roofing crew, as this install was done concurrent with a new roof installation such that I would have the assurance of my roofer that all waterproofing issues were adequately addressed. I had estimates from the "big" providers with reps calling from every which place to get my business. Their sign up process was lengthy, their prices very high and, most unusually, wouldn't give me references in my area for similar installations. The people they sent for a site inspection were ex-installers promoted to site inspectors after a few months. I decided to skip solar. Till I ran into Alfred working on a house down the block from me. We chatted for a while. Got to know each other, face to face. He answered my questions about engineering the install, how many years experience he's had in this line, how the installation would affect my concrete tile roof, what his lead time is, how long it should take to install, etc. He pulled out his phone/calculator and whipped out a $$ number. A number that was much more reasonable and realistic. We shook hands and I told him to proceed. A few hours later, he sent me an email with a two-page invoice/proposal requesting a down payment. He also provided me with an extensive list of referrals of residences he'd done in and around my area. I checked up on them and learned of his excellent work and "no problems with the system" nearly universal reply. He actually installed my system a month EARLIER than promised, took only two days, finished all the hardware/software stuff, passed inspection and turned it on. He and his guys KNOW what they're doing. There you go: Electricity from the sun, turning my meter "backwards" even in the few sunny hours in November in SoCal. Even the accompanying app from EnPhase which keeps tabs on how my panels are producing works fine. Alfred also mentioned that if my electrical needs grew in the future, adding more panels is readily doable. As presently installed, my 20 panels should suffice to cover approximately 100% of my present electrical needs, on average over a year (including a slight decrease in panel efficiency due to aging). It took me a few months to write this review as I wanted to receive my electric bill to be able to share a full review. I was recommended to Alfred by a friend of a friend. I called him and he came to the house and gave us an estimate and the different options we had available, more/less panels as well as finance, lease or buy options. We have a pool, fish pond and a 4600 Sq foot home, because of the size, the house uses a lot of energy, even more in summer. Our Bill for July and August was $156 dollars. I guess I can stop here but the reason why I take the time to write this review is because Alfred is amazing at customer service. I have called him 4 or 5 times in regards to the production or a few questions I had about the system.He had always been straight forward and very helpful. Alfred is THE BEST. I received several bids for my solar installation, and his was very competitive. He handled all of the SCE and other permits, and the installation went smoothly. It has been three years since my system was installed, and I have been in contact with him occasionally when I have questions about my system. He is very responsive.
