There's nothing inherently wrong with this Hampton, it has everything you would expect from a nice hotel from cookies in the lobby to nicer soap and shampoo bottles in the rooms but other than the expectations, there's nothing extraordinary about the location. Some people may have a view of the lake from their room, mine was of the parking lot (which is fine because I wasn't here for the view anyway). You can't prepay so when I arrived, I had to wait for my boss in the lobby before I could check in (and thus use the company credit card as this was a business trip). My room was at the very end of the hall which is totally fine but I was also sharing a wall with a young family consisting of two small children. The walls, as I found out, are thinner than I would have liked. That wasn't as bad as my upstairs neighbor, though. Whether or not they intended to walk around like an elephant, I don't know but the floors are as thin as the walls. They have a breakfast that runs from 6am-10am which is nice and that is a lot longer than most hotel breakfast and there is free parking on the property. Duluth had just been hit by a large snowstorm a fee days prior to my arrival so there was a lot of snow in the parking lot but there was still enough space to find a parking spot. The hospitality here is alright, they seem to be pretty hands off of the whole matter but that's fine. I probably wouldn't choose to stay here again unless I got a room on the top floor, I don't like being woken up at 6am simply because that's the time someone above me needs to be awake. I would recommend this place if you're staying for less than a few days and if you're a heavy sleeper.

In town for a funeral staying by superior

Whole family stayed here last weekend for a funeral. I am not experienced in Duluth MN but do know many if the hotels are dated and run down. This location is clean, has a nice feel and is located in Canal Park which is busy but central for a lot of action in the city. It also back up against Lake Superior which is pretty spectacular. The staff is helpful, not always the most organized but kind and accommodating when asked. We had a few room mix ups but we did have a large family and 6 rooms so we have to own part of the blame. The breakfast isn't award winning but it is good and there are several options. If you don't like their coffee, Carribou is across the street and the neighboring eats are a brewery, pizzeria and several other decent options. The rooms are your classic 2 full/queen or King options which bathtub/ showers which is my least favorite thing and something I judge all hotels by.

This hotel is in a wonderful location! The view when eating the free breakfast was spectacular, as you can see the water and a lighthouse. The breakfast was a solid 10/10 having every breakfast item you would want. The workers were super nice, especially the workers in charge of breakfast. We only spent the night for 1 night, so we didn't get to fully use the amenities. I will say that we are a Gold Hilton Honors member, and there were no additional benefits here which was disappointing; it felt the same as being a regular guest without membership. The rooms were decent - a little outdated, but the bed was comfortable and the shower had hot water. We would recommend staying here if you're looking for a place to stay that's walking distance around Duluth!

    King bed in room 301

A newer hotel right in the heart of the canal street festivities with three stores and plenty of free parking. We had two rooms on the top (third floor) - one a double with two queens and the other a massive king at the end of the hall with a spectacular lake view, bar area and lots of space. I checked in online (via the Hilton app) so when we arrived it only took a minute to get the keys and parking pass for the car and we were on our way to our rooms. As a newer hotel in canal park area of Duluth this place was in very good shape and so very conveniently located to everything. I really liked our room - #301- as it was in my favorite location - all the way at the end of the hall. (So no loud foot traffic going by your door all night and not as many loud slamming doors which can really get annoying in mid-scale hotels) and on the top floor too so things were nice and quiet. Plus, all the extra space was a bonus. A family could have pulled out the sofa sleeper and fit in a couple kids for sure. Now the room wasn't cheap ($340/night) - especially for a Hampton, and especially for a city the size of Duluth but it was a holiday weekend so I'm sure we paid a big premium. The larger lot for free parking (get a tag at the front desk or get towed) saved money as the canal park area is filled with pay parking. Because of the central location, once we parked, it was just an easy short walk to restaurants, the waterfront and all the main sites. Your room also comes with Free breakfast - although it was a bit of a zoo with a lot of families. The poor innkeepers could barely keep up stocking the place. All the typical free breakfast goodies, cereal, donuts, one of those flip over waffle machines, toast, juice, etc. Bottom line, it was a perfect summer day in Duluth in a great location. Recommended.

It made me felt weird to even stay. Noticeable trash around the rooms, bottles, caps, straws, wrappers etc around the side of couch, shower etc. it felt like the room was not even cleaned. There were wrappers in the folded blankets too. I also peaked behind the couches and I regretted my choice. We also requested crib and was confirmed the cribs will be set up in the room. No cribs were set up. We called and waited for a long time and there was no sheets, blanket for the crib. It's a pack and play and we had to come up with creative ways to cover the pads. We were also charged twice and it took about 3 weeks to clear the second charge. Had I not look at my bank charges and called, it was not been addressed promptly. Great location. Relatively quiet room. We were on 3rd floor. There were some negatives but the were not deal breakers. There was clutter and garbage in the halls for most of our visit. The cleaning staff shared that they are short on staff so that kinda made sense. The laundry was out of order. And the elevators were pretty dirty. But if you prioritize rooms this is fine by me. And it's winter so keeping up with that would be a battle. But our room was huge. The full size fridge meant I could buy from the smokehouse and not worry about it until we left. I am looking forward to coming back next year.

Our room overlooked the lake, a really pretty view. It was a deluxe room and had nice space for two people, with a king bed, desk with chair, two upholstered chairs, and a mini fridge concealed in the entertainment center. The bathroom wasn't as tiny as many hotels, and seemed as if it had been renovated in the past few years. The hotel included small bottles of shampoo and conditioner, as there were no installed pumps on the walls. In the morning, the nearby board room had coffee available (tasty stuff, according to my husband) plus apples, bananas, and an assortment of granola bars and similar bars. There were also some board games available for guests. Our first night there, on a Thursday, was incredibly quiet. No road noise, no noises within the hotel. Even the AC was quiet. Our experience Friday and Saturday wasn't as pleasant because we had very loud people on one side who were talking and laughing past 11pm and also had dogs that yapped at random intervals. So, just an unfortunate draw as to who our neighbors were. That was the only negative, though. We loved how many things were walkable from our room. We went in most all the nearby shops and bought a number of things, too. People should know that the parking garage is on the other side of the complex; valet parking is also available but we didn't utilize it.

Amazingly, the rooms are so well insulated from noise you could miss the whole thing. The front desk staff was a textbook example of Minnesota nice. Such lovely people! The biggest issue I have is the service and how snotty the staff is. One of the reasons I booked this hotel because it is dog friendly, when I booked the reservation, I called the hotel and requested a ground floor room near an exit and was assured it would not be a problem and they would be happy to accommodate my request. Upon check in, I found I was on the 3rd floor. I told the lady I had requested and been confirmed that I would have a ground floor room near an exit, she told me the 2nd and 3rd floor are the pet friendly rooms and she could move me to a 2nd floor room if that was better. I said, I would like them to honor my request, I was then told they couldn't do that and if I had a request like that I should have called the actual property and not Marriot. I did call the property and offered to show her the number in my phone. I was then told, whoever I talked to gave me incorrect information and shouldn't have said I would be able to have that room. At this point the other desk person stopped helping her customer and decided to stick her nose in and said "be sure to have her sign the pet waiver and additional cleaning fee agreement", what? First, if you know anything about service recovery Orr customer service you know that one person talks and helps the customer, her butting in was not helpful. Second, you guaranteed me something you didn't have and then acted like it's my fault but be sure and try to get me to sign a waiver and charge me extra for cleaning the room. Nope. This was a horrible experience with snarky people, I don't recommend and never stay there again.

The shower only had a half glass enclosure, with a sliding door to the bathroom that would then slide over the closet if someone opened the bathroom door. The water pressure was only decent if water was scalding hot, and the shampoo and body wash had the effect of hand sanitizer (so bring your own). The air conditioner would turn off every 5 minutes during the night and the fan would then start up very loud. The view from the back side of the hotel was nice and they have a nice outside patio, but we didn't enjoy it due to the limits of having our puppy with us. We spent alot of our time at Fitgers, spending our dining dollars there as they are very pet friendly. Overall, if you want a pet friendly hotel, pick another. For the money, even without the pet limitations, there are better hotels in Canal Park.
