I fluctuated between 3 and 4 stars with this review. I loved the view from our room and the whole esthetic of a warehouse turned hotel. The salt water pool was small but adequate if the place is not busy. The workout room was good and I thoroughly enjoyed the on site restaurant and their staff. The difference is as a "resort" it was a 2.5. As a hotel it was a 4.5.
The hotel staff doesn't seem to match the vibe that the resort is going for in many ways. Front desk person at check in had taken a call about a double charge and was confused and by the time he was off the phone probably needed a breather as he failed to mention most of the amenities that I had overheard the other checkin person describe to other patrons. The overall experience was not as professional as you would have in other upper end establishments. I don't think it was the wrong staff but rather poor training.
A few times during our 2 days stay, we needed to stop at the front desk. Each time staff were in the office with the door mostly closed (only open a crack) so we had to try to get their attention. We decided our questions weren't that important so we just left.
On the morning after our first night, housekeeping knocked on our door twice before 10am to clean. Check out is at 11 and we were multi night guests. I didn't think the DND sign would have been necessary. The first time it was about 8:30am. We asked them to come back closer to noon. 10:00 they were back again. Since we had now been woken up twice, we figured we might as well give up on the R&R we came here for.
When we left the room for the day at 11:00 we put the "maid service needed" sign up. When we came back that evening I was disappointed to see that the bed just had the blankets pulled up but wasn't all crisply made and besides adding a few new towels and toiletries, nothing was done. Sink and shower not wiped down, etc. I kept thinking, "You woke me up to pull the blankets up on the bed? I would have thought with that eagerness it was going to be a total room turn!"
The hotel is less than a year old. In our room (304), there was a deep gouge on one wall and several smaller ones on the walls in the bathroom. Based on the age of the hotel I would expect these to be taken care of and touched up before they get worse. Maybe housekeeping hasn't reported them to maintenance.
One of the amenities was an outdoor tent with a wood heated stove. It was a great space but awkwardly still decorated for Christmas on Feb 28. It was designed to be a place to relax and play games and socialize but it felt more like I was in a storage room as it was cluttered with odd objects and the Christmas decor so we didn't stay long.
As we ended our visit, the front desk person asked if we were checking out and what room we were in. She didn't ask how our stay was. I guess the biggest difference between a better establishment and this one is ownership of the staff in the experience. They were all doing their jobs but did not represent themselves as owners of our experience.
I have a couple suggestions for management as I believe this place has potential to be fabulous. The views are bar none. They have cool amenities like the outdoor hot tub, lots of deck space, and a fire pit with s'more fixings available.
1: really encourage every member of the staff to own the customer experience as if they owned the hotel. What would they expect as a guest? Everything is their job, even if it isn't in the job description. The customer should feel at home and pampered.
2: carry more local items in your "gift shop". The popcorn is nice but the area is famous for wild rice, the cranberry rice bread, maple syrup, etc
3: your hotel book should talk up the amenities, how to use them, who to contact, etc. We were going to use the shuttle one of the times we went to the desk and couldn't get attention so we just drove. We wanted to do the s'mores another of the times but went without. We learned about the tent from our waiter. These were cool things we were disappointed to not be able to take advantage of.
As a hotel, the room was quiet, spacious and nice. As a resort, it did not meet my expectations. read more
