This place WAS once one of our favorite spots for many years. The chips are the same and probably an 8/10. The service is typically decent. They changed the menu (including the drinks) and this is not worthy of your time or money. I'm not sure what they did wrong but it went south really bad. Oh my God, I had heard of Sombra throughout the years but never thought to try it out because to be honest I thought it was just gonna be some white wash Mexican food....HOWEVER I QUICKLY found out the truth because MY OH MY this food was absolutely SPECTACULAR!!! From the delicious chips and salsa to EVERY SINGLE ENTREE, it was just bangers after bangers! The staff was very kind and very attentive so absolutely loved that and I honestly cannot wait to try more of their dishes! I would definitely recommend the Carne Asada fries. They were spectacular. Good local spot to stop in while in the Ridgeland area. Chosen initially for proximity to my hotel, the service at the bar was excellent. Interesting farm raised catfish and local Gulf shrimp on the menu in a Mexican kitchen added variety from the standard options. (I chose the shrimp and they were good!) Will definitely return. Just terrible cultural misappropriation. White high school kids cooking Mexican. People working the entrance were so damn unpleasant. Waitress was the exception so helpful and nice. Food came and my wife's order was stone cold and we sent it back. My tacos al carbon were at best microwave and everything mush together. Refried beans tasted like they came out of a can and the Mexican rice was so dry. Excellent ambiance plenty of seating, but hardly anyone eating. nice atmosphere with warm tiles and lighting. there is a nice bar area with counter seating and booths. the way you enter the restaurant is a little strange to me but the restaurant is easily accessible. server was very friendly and did a good job with our lunch order. she was busy so times weren't always the fastest but she wasn't just standing, she was busy. the food looked delicious but in my opinion fell short of the presentation. there is some seasoning used that i don't care for in the food. not the traditional mexican seasoning, it's in their salsa and also in the dishes. my lunch partner agreed that food was good but probably not enticing enough for repeat visits. read more

We paid over $100 with tip for three people. My husband couldn't eat his food at all because it was so dry and salty. I couldn't eat my sides and almost choked on my entree because I didn't have anything to drink and the chicken was quite tough. My daughter had to cover her food in salsa and still didn't eat her side. The waitress did ask if my husband wanted something else and I think she was trying her best but the food was awful, cold and overpriced. I definitely have mixed feelings about this place. The ambiance was out of this world. The décor and atmosphere is unsurpassed. The food however is just ok at best. I feel like if they would just market themselves as a fusion of southern and Mexican food, I would not have been as surprised when I opened the menu. Fried catfish is not something you typically expect in a Mexican restaurant. Even the typical Mexican items were a miss. The salsa, even though they give you two different ones which is nice, they were watery with little resemblance of the flavors you expect. No cilantro, onions, or heat in the salsas. The steak tacos were about the same. The steak cut seemed good but where were the Mexican flavors? All the dishes just fell short of what you'd expect. A favorite place for salad lunch with several choices for a change to the usual taco salad. Dressings offered are suitable to each one. Their other choices are slightly better than average Mexican fair. I recommend the Conchita Pibl. Has a separate bar, with sports being tuned in. The food is so whitewashed, this restaurant has no authenticity. The food is bland.The service was ok but they were very understaffed not a lot of people were at the restaurant ,but the food took an hour and thirty minutes to come to our table to just be flavorless that is absurd I don't think I will be coming here again. The staff is mean too it looked like they were having a bad day, as the waiter was putting my drink on the table she spilt it all over me, and ruined my dress. The Ambiance is very nice, but the music sounds like screamo music which doesn't really match the type of restaurant it is supposed to be "Mexican". Went with some coworkers after work one evening. Arrived about 6:30. The restaurant was busy but not full. It was a bit loud but not so much that you couldn't have a conversation. We were quickly seated and provided water and complimentary chips and salsa. We ordered margaritas and queso dip. The bartender had a heavy pour, but we didn't mind. I asked the waiter for recommendations, and to my surprise, he recommended the BBQ Ribs. I decided to give it a shot. The half rack came with very meaty ribs covered in a thick sauce. the pictures of food were as good as they look. i seriously wanted to give this restaurant a shoutout because they practice sustainability. they don't use napkins or paper towels in the bathroom they just have cloth rags you dry your hands off with (soooo cool) came here after finishing my hectic week of studying for midterms! this was a celebratory meal* & i was not disappointed at all. we started off with the queso cheese dip (which was honestly top 2 for me) it had a very authentic cheesy taste to it. paired perfectly with the tortilla chips that were nice & thin too. my frozen margarita could have been stronger, but i won't harp on that. it taste good but was more on the sweet side than the tequila side. my food was good but the enchiladas had a lot going on! i was expecting them to be more cheesy but they were more saucey n meaty. definitely tasty but not what i was going for. i'll be back again soon though because i want to try the quesadilla burger!! read more

While visiting Jackson area, I wanted some Mexican food. Stumbled on to Sombra while shopping in the area. It's a spacious restaurant with Mexican decor and has a full bar. Margarita is one of their specialties so I tried the Township. It's good but I don't taste much of the orange flavor. I was disappointed that they don't have a prickly pear flavor which must just be more popular in the west coast flavor (although I've had it in the Atlanta area but I realize that I'm in Mississippi). We ordered the corn which is very good. It's on the appetizer section but it came out with our meal which worked out better. I think it's more of a side dish than an appetizer. I really like Mexican corn and the Sombra version is a deconstructed corn so you don't have to eat it off the cob which I appreciate. I would've wanted a little more cheese but it's very good nonethelless. My husband had the classic burrito. It came with beans and Mexican rice. He really liked the burrito. It's big portion and he didn't finish it all. He mentioned getting the pecan crunch but he was so full. I had the skirt steak quesadilla which is good. I would come back to Sombra again. read more

The service was excellent, the food fresh and delicious!! We are vegan and got the veggie fajitas and had them hold the cheese and sour cream. By far the freshest vegetables cooked to perfection! We also had an appetizer of guacamole which was served with carrot sticks and jicama. The veggies with the guacamole was such a great combination! Ok. This review is based solely on one visit at lunch where I got the daily special, the brisket plate. It was very good. Waiter was good. Atmosphere was good. Price was actually reasonable by today's standards as there was plenty to eat and the complementary chips/dip was way above average which really helped. Now, I DO pay attention to bad reviews however. Not that all of them are accurate but you can usually read between the lines and get a good idea which ones are ligit. They are usually bad for a reason as most people love to compliment good experiences. That being said, I will definitely go back and try some of the more traditional Mexican dishes and hope for the best. The menu looks to have some actual Mexican selections that are not the typical cookie cutter boring junk that most Mexican restaurants have and also some non Mexican alternatives which is very smart. Late lunch at Sombra today with my little fam - and wow have things gone downhill here (while the prices have gone way, way up.) Sombra used to be a solid choice for people pleasing Tex Mex in the metro area, but not anymore. First off, the place is dirty, and has an overwhelming smell of fabulosa and rancid grease. The chips were room temp crumbles and you would do 1000 times better with jarred salsa from the chip aisle at Kroger than the glumpy old flavorless salsa we were served. The steak quesadillas tasted like leftovers from last week and were inedible , the tortilla soup was room temp and the burger was ho hum at best. The service was just ok. The bill had those courtesy pre calculated tips on the bottom based on the taxed total, not the pretax total which I feel is bad form and a smidge dishonest. Maybe Sombra needs new management - or maybe even one of those reality shows could come in and overhaul the whole operation. read more
