I consider this one of those hidden gems, and to the point that it's actually tempting to not tell anyone about it. Sombrero Beach is beautiful white sand and it's so much more chill than almost any beach in South Florida. The parking is free, the wind is plentiful, the waves are beautiful, and there are playgrounds and places for absolutely everyone to find something to love. Half of the beach is closed at the moment because of Hurricane Irma, but they're building it back up fast, and even half of Sombrero Beach is more than worth a day's stop. read more

Very pretty I loved this sight it was well kept and pretty. Would go again!! The sand was nice and clean the water was nice and there was enough sunlight for a burn. This is one if the real beaches with sand and sun. With the virus becoming so prevalent it made for an interesting experience. The mask required wasn't as bad but the sea grass lined beaches that were composting with an unpleasant smell! It would make it an amazing beach if it was raked daily. I realize there's a cost but the guest would be amazing and make it a 5 star review! Still love the Beach. read more

This was a beautiful, peaceful beach. Its calm so its great for snorkeling. There is a playground, grills, & outdoor showers within a few feet of the beach. There weren't too many people and 5 minutes away from a shopping plaza for beer or food. I loved, loved, loved this beach! read more

Went here two days ago. Seaweed EVERYWHERE on the sand, in the water. The beach floor is all grass. Went with a group of 13 and the best part was parking and bathrooms. I say if you're hoping to see a white sandy beach with blue waters then this is NOT going to be it. Visited Bahia Honda beach state park, a lot better. read more

Went down to Key West, and while the downtown atmosphere was awesome, the beaches were not. On our way back through we decided to stop at this beach hoping it'd be good, and we were not disappointed! I used to live on Marathon Key in the FL Keys and this Beach is a really nice small local beach. It all depends on when you go during the year. Because the currents can be low or high. And some times a lot of sea weed washes up on shore. So there is less sand near the water and more sea weed at times. The beach has outdoor showers to wash off and feet showers too. They have a big play ground and grills and shaded areas with tables to enjoy and maybe have a grill out or picnic. Iguanas in the bushes and seagulls in the air. Sun shining down and nice tropical breeze sometimes. You can have pets there but have to be leashes and they stick up on Doggie bags there, they have supplies on stands for pet owners that want to bring their pets with them to enjoy the beautiful day at the beach. Public bathroom, and water fountain as well. Palm trees all around. It's a nice small beach. It's pretty nice. read more

If you're near marathon and are looking for a nice beach, this is the place to go! It's one of the few larger beaches in the keys and it doesn't have a ton of rocks or seaweed. There's no entrance fee and you don't have to pay to park. Bring your snorkeling gear, because you might see some cool little fish. There's also a grassy gated area where you can bring your dog for a walk and a nice little playground for the kids. Everything is very clean and well maintained. read more

This was a great little beach to visit while vacationing in the keys! It seems secluded, and not loud or busy at all. There are hardly any waves so snorkeling and wading are most enjoyable here. There are showers, bathrooms, and a walking trail. Our little adventure wasn't funny at the time, but its hilarious now! While swimming at this beach, I climbed on top of a bed of rocks that were submerged in the water about a foot or so.. Exploring, is what I told my husband. He climbed up behind me, and all of a sudden, about a 3ft shark swims towards me and makes a sharp left turn when it reaches my feet. I surprised myself (being a Florida native, and knowing what NOT to do when sharks are present) by freaking out and accidentally falling off of the rocks and into the deeper part of the water. Knowing I just created a bunch of splashing (huge no-no) I started to swim to shore, leaving my husband behind. He tried to follow me and get off the rocks but he lost his footing and fell down as well. Only difference was, he fell onto the rocks, not off of them. So now there was my splashing and his blood in the water. Needless to say, we got out as soon as we could reach the shore. and didn't come back. LOL! Why take away a star because of mother nature? That's why I still give this beach 5 stars. Through it all, I would come visit this beach again. Just next time, I'll be more cautious of whats in the water and better prepare myself, mentally. Also note...the shark didn't bother us at all. So don't let that run you off. I just wasn't prepared to see one lol! read more

Not sure what the big deal was. Good beach but not a-mazing. Pros- There werent too many people there so that was nice. Free parking is always a plus! There's a small island you can swim too. It takes awhile to do so - I believe my boyfriend was gone an hour trying to swim to it and back. Not recommended as there are no lifeguards. Cons- The first thought when I walked onto it was "Yay palm trees. Oooh, this is small." The part we were at had a nonexistant shoreline - you could lay out probably three people wide. I thought that was odd. The water wasn't clear blue like I thought it would be. Very murky. A lot of locals. Hard to find. My GPS said it was directly behind the high school but we drove awhile after that trying to find out where to park. It's next to a neighborhood - wouldnt it be nice to walk to the beach! I got a tan so Im happy! read more

This is what a beach should be like... white sand.... palm trees.... clean water.. i was in up to my chest and i could still see my toes... lol this is the best beach in the Florida Keys its actually in Marathon which is right in the middle i took me 30 min to get there and we were staying in Key largo.. the beach was grills all over, a playground for the kids, volleyball nets... and best part for me was that you can have alcohol on the beach.. awesome... i think this was the beach used for the corona beer commercials... read more

Awesome beach with a great view. The beach is located kind of far back in a neighborhood that is beautiful. It also has a nice park and a bathroom facility between the beach in the parking lot. There are no refreshments or food available anywhere nearby so make sure to pack a cooler or you will melt! This is a great local beach that is very rarely ever crowded. Also, has a great view of sombrero reef lighthouse. There are no volleyball courts or children's play area or anything like that. This is simply a great beach to swim and check out all kinds of tiny little creatures living in the limestone head between the two beaches. Bring some snorkeling gear and a cooler full of drinks and you will have a wonderful afternoon. read more

I love this little beach. The sand is white and warm and the water is (usually, depending on the time of year) quite clear. Sea grass rarely cover but a fifth of the beach, which is a plus for me because I find it pretty gross. Watch out for the man-of-war jellyfish in the spring and be sure to get there early on a Saturday in the fall or winter, in order to get a good spot. read more

Fantastic beach! Yes, it has a lot of seaweed along the shoreline but seaweed/sea grass is a natural part of the environment. It's needed for environmental factors. It's a vital part of the shorelines in the keys. If you don't like it then the beaches of the keys are not for you. Marathon, is a fantastic place to visit. read more

This is a great hidden beach but there were to much of seaweed and some parts of the beach wasn't even clean. Rest if you can ignore that, there's good amount of parking and plenty of area to walk or play at the beach. read more

Best beach in the Florida Keys hands down! Lots of damage after Hurricane Irma but well on its way to being better than ever. Sand is beautifully white and the water is crystal clear. Like all beaches in the keys sea grass can be an issue but the city rakes and removes the grass here twice a week to ensure it stays beautiful. Playground, showers, bathrooms, and shade pavilions on site and if you want to reserve one you can at the city's website under parks and recreation. If your coming from out of town the earlier you can get there the easier parking will be. Don't park on private property here this is a real community beach in a wonderful neighborhood so please be respectful. Sombrero is a true turtle nesting beach so watch for marked nesting areas and be careful not to disturb. This is also the location for numerous turtle releases so you may get lucky and get to help releasing a rescued and rehabilitated turtle!! (See turtle hospital) Beach is closed at night but open from sunrise to sunset don't come to the keys and not check this place out outs amazing!!!! read more

The view of the ocean from the beach is beautiful, especially at sunset. It is the ideal beach when thinking of a perfect place to soak up some sun. It is also a great place to bring kids. Sombrero Beach is a really nice public beach and great for young kids where you can relax, snorkel, picnic and grill. When we were visiting there was a big group of local musicians that meet every week to play their instruments and sing. It was great to hear some live music while I soaked up the sun. Go and visit you never know what you will encounter on the beach. read more
