Sombrero beach is a nice area to relax and spend the day. They have plenty of parking but you will have to pay. There is a fenced grassy area before the beach where you can picnic and barbecue. There are also restrooms and a children's playground. The beach itself is nice, but the shoreline is very thin (especially at high tide) and packed with people, so there's not a lot of space to spread out and enjoy yourself. If you don't mind the crowds, the water is warm and the facilities are nice, just don't expect a quiet, peaceful experience and you won't be disappointed.

Easily one of the best beaches in the FL Keys... wide, white sand beach, plenty of facilities (bathrooms, showers), recreation areas like volleyball and BBQs. Fenced parking area provides easy access to beach. Lots of beautiful, green tropical space! Water is very nice, calm, and beautiful. Very worth a stop to enjoy when you're passing through Marathon Key! Highly recommend!

Saw jelly fish in August on the shore and couldn't believe that this type of jelly fish doesn't sting. Water was too hot of course but this was worth the stop over.

Probably the best beach we visited while in the Florida Keys. The keys doesn't have many sandy stretches of beach to begin with so this was a nice gem to find on the southern tip of Marathon. The beach is not huge but enough to stretch your legs and walk up and down, plenty of room for everyone to still spread out. Lots of nice, white sand and plenty of shells and coral to pick through. When you are done with getting sandy, the beach offers a nice playground for the kids and plenty of shelter to have a picnic or sit to people watch. Just up the road is a Publix and strip mall with various stores, so you can just buy anything you need for the beach without having to stuff your car full from your hotel/resort. Buy a Publix sub and some chips and you are set for the afternoon. Bathrooms onsite were clean and well-stocked. Parking is pay by the hour and they are hawkish at checking times so don't skip on paying. The app makes it very easy to do. If we come back to the keys, we will make sure to centralize ourselves to this beach since it was one of the best we visited while touring the Florida Keys.

A beautiful little beach in the Florida Keys, having traveled to the Keys for many years and being a resident of Florida I definitely understand that there are really beautiful beaches across the state - this beach may not rate in the top 10 across the state but very well could be one of the best in the Keys. Lots of sun and shade here and wonderful amenities including close proximity parking to the beach, clean restrooms, shelters with picnic tables and charcoal grills, a playground for the little ones and plenty of sand, clear water and palm trees filled with coconuts, yea I admit the sea grass can be annoying but that's part of the Keys just as the coral is but none of this is a deal breaker for me. If you visit any of the State Parks here you'll notice they don't manage or clean up the sea grass it's considered an essential part of the ecological health of the Keys. I noticed that on the day I visited this beach it was not an issue to the point that it could ruin my experience, it's late November it's sunny and 77 degrees - I don't remember ever having a bad day at any beach so I'm not going to complain about this one, I feel I'm pretty lucky to be here...

The Keys may not have fantastic beaches but we enjoyed our time at this one. There isn't a ton of beach area but the sand was nice enough. The waves and current were pretty rough during our visit but the water was warm-ish. There was also very little trash on the sand. Parking is NOT free. I think we paid $10 for two hours--you pay at a little pay machine. The price is a little steep but it is what it is. Personally, I didn't see any warning signs about jellyfish but I guess there are such signs so watch yourself out there. No lifeguards here so watch your kiddos in the water. I would gladly return.

Beautiful, calm beach! Sand is clean and white. Water is gorgeous blue. Parking is $5 per hour. New(ish) playground which is good for kids ages 8 and under. There is a nice walking path and indoor restrooms on the property. Dogs are welcome on a lease. They have dog poop bags available. They also have several pavilions that would make a great place to eat lunch and relax.

Favorite beach in the Keys. Not sure but I think it used to be free parking but paid $10 for 2 hours today. Still worth it. Beautiful beach. Nice playground for the kids. Wish there were a concession stand for some snacks. My advice, if you're coming - bring anything you want to drink or eat. We do a Publix run lol

Beach tucked away off the beaten path... This is a nice beach on the Keys. We stopped here at this beach in Marathon Key to watch the sunset. Lots of people... so different from Anne's Beach where we first made a stop. Sombrero Beach is mangrove-free!! BUT there are warning signs to watch out for jellyfish! I guess the Portuguese man o' war are rampant here. Yikes! With its soft sand on this long stretch of beach and warm turquoise waters, it is one of the best-kept beach secrets in the Florida Keys. It was a lucky find. I did not go on the water but started collecting sea shells. The shells were cute and tiny then I realized I didn't have anywhere to keep or hold them so I let them go in the water. Parking can be challenging since this is one of the prettier beaches before heading to Key West. Well maintained park with bathrooms and showers available. Sombrero Beach is without a doubt one of the nicest beach in the Keys. I have lived in Miami for 12 years now, and the Keys are not really known for their beaches. Recently discovering this beach, I have been back twice - 2 weeks in a row. There is free parking and the facilities are very conformable and most welcoming (bathrooms, showers, playgrounds, beach volleyball courts). I recommend looking at the tide chart because to check when the tide will high/low. The beach is rocky and can be a little uncomfortable on your feet on low tide (take boat shoes!). When the tide is high, the beach floor's sand is smooth and much enjoyable. Also, there are several palm trees for those looking for a shaded area/covered from the sun. Overall, highly recommended beach for tourists and locals' alike visiting the mid-lower Keys. Safe travels! read more

Could be the Best Beach in the Keys Everyone loves the keys for it's food, boating, partying and atmosphere.. but it always bothered me that the best place to get a nice swim in the keys was in a pool. I could swim in a pool on a mountain top. I want to get in the ocean when I'm in a tropical paradise. But most of the beaches in the keys leave a lot to desire. Then a few friends recommended Sombrero Beach. It's a small, clean patch of beach a few blocks south from the busyness of US1, in a residential neighborhood. Very family friendly, there's a playground for the kids, trees for shade and the water is just a few steps from where you park, so you don't have to haul all your beach toys over miles of sand before planting all your stuff. read more

We loved this beach. Such a gem to find. There is no fee which is a awesome. They have showers and restrooms. We were able to find a covered picnic table to set up for the day. The seaweed was not too bad and there was no smell which was a blessing. If you get a chance head to the area near the end of the road the water is clam and seaweed free. All in all you need to come to this beach. Did I mention they have a playground and volleyball court. Great find!! read more

What a great beach, especially for the Keys. Although there's sea grass to contend with, there isn't much in the way of coral/rocky areas that are pretty much the standard for Keys beaches. There are playgrounds for children, a clearly marked off swimming area, an area to fish out of and most importantly room on the beach to layout. I can't stress enough though, you need to get here early as parking gets tight in the afternoon. read more

Cool beach. A local vibe and it wasn't too crowded (we are here in the off season). There was a good bit of sea grass which comes with the territory. More expansive sands than many beaches in the area. Also it's free with tons of parking! read more

Enjoy sunsets? Sombrero Beach has beautiful sunsets! And when the weather is actually decent its nice to go swimming for once. its very relaxing!. And they have clean bathrooms And its dog friendly!. Although, some days the beach is very packed!. Not a very big beach but it's enough to enjoy it. I love taking walks on the beach and watching the sun go down. Make sure to take lots of photo of the amazing sunset!. But don't worry there's plenty of shade either under the trees or under the Gazebos. They have a lovely volleyball area which is always nice. All in all It is something I would come back too! read more

Beautiful little section of white sand beach nestled at the end of a typical Keys neighborhood. I have come to the Keys hundreds of times and this is the first time we decided to come here after a bunch of people telling us to try it out. Plenty of parking which is a rarity down here for a public beach. Nice shoreline, couldn't snorkel too much because there was no visibility but definitely coming back to try it out when the water is calmer. There is a dock at the end, not sure if public or private . There is a green/park area with gazebos , grills and a small playground for the kids. There are also public restrooms which appeared to be well maintained. Overall great place to go to the beach, at MM50 in Marathon, FL. read more

Took the kids ages five, four, and six months and we had a great time! No water shoes needed, very little grass and a nice sandy bottom. The showers are definitely a perk and the playground is very nice. Plenty parking. I definitely plan on going back! read more

This is an amazing beach here in the Keys. We went on a Saturday and it was calm and not crowded - so unlike the Miami/Ft.Lauderdale beaches on the weekends! The sand is powdery, there are a few palm trees scattered around (great for me because I always need some shade) and calm water. This beach is great for families because there are bathrooms just steps away, a playground, and grills and picnic tables just off the sand! This is a must-see if you are in the Keys and looking to spend a relaxing day on the beach. I'm so glad we found it since it's not on the main highway - it's actually about 2 miles off the main road in Marathon. read more

white sandy beaches! We went here after we did a snorkeling trip, it's very quiet and very relaxing. The Palm trees are beautiful and the water is warm. It's a nice beach, but I wouldn't pay admission just to go to it, in my opinion. If you do the snorkeling tour or kayaking, stop by and relax at the beach! read more

Really beautiful spot in Marathon. 1 hr and 45 mins away from my home, but personally I rather take the drive south than to crappy south beach. I really enjoy the fact that the beaches in the Keys are less packed than anywhere in MIA where ppl pretty much post up next to you. Ugh! This place is so nice. Has a cute little Park for the kids. We stopped here on our way to key west from Miami. We spent 3 or so hours at the beach. It's a great beach in the middle of the Keys. I ran to the publix about a mile away and picked up snacks and drinks for a beach picnic. Great beach overall and it had covered picnic tables, bathroom, playground, and clear water. read more

Great beach. Showers, changing room/restroom, per friendly, picnic areas, playground for the kids and very clean. Large enough that you're not on top if anyone but not a huge beach that you end up walking for days to pick out your perfect piece of sand. I would definitely visit again. read more

Please note that as of December 5, 2017, the beach is closed due to IRMA. It appears that they are working to clean up and replace the sand on the beach. It should be open at a later date. The area looks like a nice place to spend the day. The is a playground and restrooms on site. read more

This place is a hidden gem. Lay out on the white sand or head out kayaking into the mangroves! A perfect spot for a wedding at sunset! There is even an educational park for kids this talks all about sea turtles! read more

Our favorite beach to go in the Keys. Can't beat it being free, always clean, and has some great snorkel spots of the water is clear! Would recommend to those looking for a low-key, fun beach that is off the beaten path from resorts (especially if you're staying and don't have access to a private beach, this could be yours)! read more

Great public beach area with lots of nice people from all over the world. They are still recovering from the hurricane but have and are making great improvements. Plenty of space for beach goers, even on a crowded day. We like the cove side for wading and floating around. They have a great play area for the kids. Lots of palms and other teas for grabbing a slice of shade. They have bathrooms and outdoor shower head for rinsing off. read more

This is a smelly disgusting beach. It smells exactly the way it does after I use the restroom with a hint of boiled eggs. Everyday I wonder how is it possible that my wife can deal with that smell after I use the restroom and how she cleans it all the time. Anyways I don't recommend this beach to anyone until it gets cleaned up. Very upset with Monroe countyfor their lack of cleaning and respect for others. read more

This beach is beautiful. Calm waters perfect for kids and anyone not comfortable swimming far. Two shark sightings today. There was an odd smell for awhile today but it didn't last long. Nice area and bathhouses. read more

I consider this one of those hidden gems, and to the point that it's actually tempting to not tell anyone about it. Sombrero Beach is beautiful white sand and it's so much more chill than almost any beach in South Florida. The parking is free, the wind is plentiful, the waves are beautiful, and there are playgrounds and places for absolutely everyone to find something to love. Half of the beach is closed at the moment because of Hurricane Irma, but they're building it back up fast, and even half of Sombrero Beach is more than worth a day's stop. read more

What a sweet little beach. The best words I can use to describe this beach are sweet and darling. It is a thin strip of beach however it is very pretty, very serene and there are on the beach so it is a perfect spot for people who like to alternate between the the shade and the sun. The water is refreshing although not very clear. read more

great little beach area in Sombrero. Came here 3 times on our vacation. The first day there was a small wedding right on the beach:) Kids loved snorkeling here bc it was so shallow, the playground is also a great bonus. My kids loved it!! Lots of parking!!! read more

The complex is located off the water. The entrance is at MM 87 and is marked Founders Park. Stop at the gate to pay an entrance fee. Go through the park to parking right outside the door. The lot is spacious with overflow. The area was clean. The Ron Levy Aquatic Center is a public pool available daily for residents at $3 and non residents $11. The name sake was the Vice Mayor of Islamorada in 2001. Enter through the building. There is a small locker room available. The long course 50 meter eight lane outdoor pool built in 2001 is a beauty. The pool can easily adjust to short course accommodating eight lanes, The pool is kept heated to 82°. There are two 1M and two 3M diving boards. I have been here several times with my son who is a competitive swimmer. He has trained with Gary Hall's Race Club which continues to operate out of the Ron Levy Aquatic Center. A cool factor is that several of the USA Men's 2008 Olympic team trained here under the direction of Michigan coach Mike Bottom. If your fortunate enough to enjoy this swimming pool complex consider yourself fortunate.

A lifeguard is on duty during open swim (Monday through Friday 1:00-5:45, Saturdays from 9:00-5:45 with a lunch break daily from 11:45-1:00). No floaties are allowed in the pool. Life jackets are available. To swim in the deep end which is 10-feet in depth, children must take a swim test with the lifeguard and receive a bracelet to show their capability. There is a small pool for babies/toddlers, not more than 6-13 inches in depth. Only minimal parking is available outside, street parking, too. I give this place two stars because it is free and they have ample restrooms available. There are some grassy areas, two sand vollyball courts, and shaded bbq areas (limited supply), The beach itself is remarkable in how small it is. We had some wind recently so there was a lot of grass on the beach. It does provide a safe swimming area for kids. There just are very few beaches in the keys. If you want a sandy beach, the Keys are not the area to find one. Took us about five minutes to walk the entire length of the beach. It was also packed with sunbathers. read more

This beach was great!! I went in January with my school, and there was a great climbing tree. There's not that much shade, so put your sunblock on! Great for kids, as there is a playground. There are picnic tables, great for enjoying a nice lunch at the beach. Not that many seashells, but lots of rocks (not where you sit, over to the side) and lot of jellyfish washed up on shore.
