After driving around Calexico and El Centro around 7:00-8:00pm on New Year's Eve, we finally found that Sombrero was the last local Mexican restaurant that remained open. They were a life savor. Have been here a couple times now, once in drive through and now inside. Both times. Service has been great, quick and efficient (considering how busy they are). I have always loved the Sombrero franchise and this place is no exception. This location is conveniently located near the mall right off highway 8 in El Centro. They have a drive through which makes it easy to get in and out. Getting to the actual location is a bit tricky. But it is located near Dillard's. There is a variety of salsa found in their salsa bar and peppers. The inside is kept clean and stocked. The bathrooms require a code, while the women's bathroom is broken and open (no code). The downfall was no seat covers in the stall I used. The beans are rich and delicious, cannot get enough. My S.O. loves the carne asada burritos. The salsa for the chilaquiles was just enough spice and hotness... even though I added more salsa... you can never have enough right!! They do have plenty of parking and garbage cans in the parking lot. read more

Small chain place that I've eaten when I want Americanized Mexican food. Being from San Diego, I know Sombreros. A couple of issues here that at this location that warranted a 2 star review. The food PROBABLY would have been up to the chains standards and I would still visit this location again if I was wanting Sombreros. The fail was in the ordering process. I have ordered food using ToastTab before. Never encountered this. When ordering, I verified how long it would take and the distance to drive to the location. 15-20 minutes for the food. 11 minute drive. Perfect. Leave immediately and they will still be putting it together when I arrive. TWO minutes after placing the order, we got a notification that our order was ready! Fast is great when you are there. But not when ordering ahead, especially in a time when this is common practice. The food was already fairly cool after picking it up. Small other complaint was they have an actual tab to request utensils. Requested forks, knives, spoons and napkins. Had to share the one fork we got. Insignificant but my less than warm food warranted mentioning it. Pay attention to your orders El Centro. read more

Their rolled tacos aren't good. I used to like them at other sombrero locations but the ones here are different. The beef inside is like a paste with no real texture or flavor. The tortillas are decent though and the guacamole and salsa and stuff is ok. I was really disappointed overall though because of the quality of the meat. I ended up not finishing them. While ordering we are attended properly, professionally and with a smile. We were able to take our time to choose what we wanted and the cashier was patient. After we ordered we were offered if we wanted to add a dessert. Which I think was great customer service. The food was made quickly and was warm when we received it. The chili cart was loaded with fresh chili sauce and jalapeños. It was clean and inviting. The soda fountain area was also clean. The food was delicious and satisfying. Well served and wasn't skimpy. Super disappointed today. I've eaten at Sombrero's longer than I can remember. I lived in San Diego and used to go to their 30th St. location back when it was half the size it is now. Mom and dad, the founders, would be at a table most days doing bookkeeping. I was happy to find they are in the valley too, and stop in when I'm in the area. I joined their "club" last year. Over the weekend, I saw that they had a free taco offer on Tuesday, October 4th if you use their online app. I live an hour away, and decided to go to town earlier in the week for my errands and stop at Sombrero's for lunch. I ordered online and redeemed the code for a free taco. When I tried to pay online, it said "offer not valid". I kept trying to reorder, the first page said "offer applied", and every time I tried to pay, it said "offer not valid. I ended up finishing the transaction and was going to explain the problem I was having with their app. I showed the cashier the offer, and he said if I wanted the extra taco, I'd have to pay for it. I showed him the page that had the code. I confirmed that it was the 4th, I ordered a combo online and paid for it. Everything they required. I just wanted the taco promised on the app. The cashier was nice, but refused to budge. I really wanted the food, had arranged my schedule for the week to be there on the 4th, now this. I ended up canceling the order and requested a refund. Hopefully it will show up in my account in a day or so. I'm adding a screen shot of the offer. For being a fast-food Mexican joint, this place hit the spot for my husband and I for a late dinner when we were visiting from out of town. We agreed we were too tired for a sit down restaurant but didn't feel like grabbing a burger from other fast food joints in the proximity. My husband is more picky about his Mexican food as he won't eat anything cooked in lard, so after he confirmed this place was safe, we ordered a burrito, a quesadilla, and some fries (odd, I know) to share. Under $20 for a delicious meal, this seemed to good to be true. In an area with somewhat limited restaurant options, I selected Sombrero tonight via DoorDash. My meal was nicely packaged and included utensils. My first surprise upon unrolling the flour tortillas: they are handmade! Wow! Very good! I ordered chilaquiles which came with a small side of beans covered in orange cheese and side of potatoes. I LOVE chilaquiles- these looked unique, the chips were warm and soft (not crunchy), topped with onion and cilantro. The eggs are scrambled. As I started eating, I realized the tortilla chips are made from the handmade tortillas! The chips may have broken down more quickly under the weight of salsa and Guacamole I put on them. I topped the chilaquiles with guacamole- came in small container. $0.80?! Cannot beat that price. If you like guacamole a lot and have a big appetite, buy a few sides of guacamole. Aside from handmade tortillas, the other seller for me: the green salsa. A lovely medium spice salsa. I would definitely order from here again. I ordered a side of rice and beans. Both are standard. After an intense day of work, I built up a manly hunger for somethis is at or right near top for Carne Asada burrito..mind you, I am absolutely picky as can be (I am not high maintenance, hm!) about my burrito. My burrito, hold the guacamole and hold the pico De gallo......MEAT only! They never disappoint...my burrito is hot to hold, as it only has the hot meat in it...I also get side of Chile's Torados... cooked Mexican blistered jalapeños. Oh yes, and a side of fries (fries could be cooked a minute or so longer, as I do like my fries a little crispy). Their sauce bar has three flavors (red, burgundy or rusty brownish-red, and green) for the burrito, one for the chips, and some pickled jalapeños. For drinks, I'm not particularly happy about the "Pepsi" fountain drinks...(As I am a " diet Coke" fountain kind of guy)..so settled on diet Dr. Pepper! MENUDO ! the king of mexican cuisine. The menudo is 5 stars for many years up until the one recent visit last week. everything was great but the tripe was not cut in nice bite size squares and not trimmed of gummy fat. In addition, the tripe was under cooked so it was "cut up rubber garden hose". we took it home (couldn't enjoy it there) and cut it into normal small pieces and cooked it more. actually we thought we cooked it enough and the tripe was still tough. up until this experience I would brag about the menudo to my family and friends. It used to be a rare restaurant that you could get great hot menudo 24-7. please fix this and I will change my rating. read more
