It's really one of my FAVORITE hometown restaurants for BBQ. In my many travels it is hard to find the consistency and taste to match Sonny's in Marianna, FL. I have even been to other locations of the same chain, but this location never lets me down. I am also a member of their Birthday Club and each year they are faithful to sending my email invite to a jFREE meal which is generously stacked with food and drink. Family meal while we were stranded in Marianna, FL waiting for our car to be fixed. We started with the redneck egg rolls. A hit round the table. It was a good size appetizer and could even be a meal for one. It was filled with strands of pulled pork and creamy coleslaw that culminated in a smoky, cheesy and slightly spicy delight that definitely had us licking our lips in anticipation of our entrees. Our oldest and I both ordered the pulled pork sandwich, though I opted for a topping of coleslaw to brighten up the luscious fatty goodness I hoped was on that sandwich. My husband ordered a giant of a sandwich in the Pitmaster. Luna rarely eats an entire meal, but she wolfed it down no problem. Me too. It was good. Smoky, tender meat that tasted like it had been smoked into submission on garlic bread that stood up to the ingredients. The pit master looked tasty, I didn't have a chance to try it. I think I took a bit of mine, sipped a lil sweet tea, looked up and he was done. The only down side was the service. Very mediocre. We had asked for very small things from our waitress, yet they seemed to really bother her. Like a to go container, and if she could cut the corn on the cob in half so our 16mth old could eat it. I haven't been to a Sonny's in years and never in Marianna Florida (where?) Well this Sonny's BBQ rates up there with BubbaQue's in Gainsville or Arthur Bryant's in Kansas City, especially the sliced beef! Yes, it was that good. Everything was cooked perfectly. We got the redneck egg rolls and the family fest. My my was it more than we expected! We had a party of 4 adults and 1 child. Added a salsa bar for another $3. The egg rolls were sooo good! We couldn't even finish the family fest. I think you can feed another 3 people with that meal. It also came with 4 huge cups of sweet ice. Everyone was also so nice there. First of all, my waitress was outstanding, so this review has nothing to do with her. The ribs were not juicy at all, and were tough. Not entirely to my liking, but still good enough. The lettuce in the salad bar was definitely substandard. It was not fresh. Lots of wilt and brown showing. The worst were their fries. It is my expectation that a nice restaurant should have fresh cut fries. They cheapen themselves by using reconstituted fries. Overall, maybe not as bad as this review may sound, but not quite good enough for 4 stars. read more

I've been to plenty of Sonny's in Central FL, but this one at the Panhandle was really good. What made this particular Sonny's standout was the service. Though we waited quiet a while for a table that's where the worst of our experiences ended. The food was on par if not better than other Sonny's. We have been working all day... Instead of smoking our own dinner, decided Sonny's was quicker and easier, (we were tired!). The service was somewhat slow, the sides were good, but MY ribs were SO TOUGH and dry... It was difficult to eat them. My buddies were just a little better, but not by much! One saving grace,,,, their sweet tea has always been good!! Now I live here, but my buddy is not local. I hate to have such an experience at a local restaurant. Went in the other night and it took 15mins just to get acknowledged and told they'd be right with me. A few minutes goes by and someone comes to help me just to tell me I have to go to the bar to make a Togo order where I waited for 16mins before I was helped. Another lady who came in after me said she couldn't believe how long I'd been waiting just to place my order. Another guy who came in after me went ahead and went to the bar after hearing the waiter tell me to go over there. He sat there unacknowledged till I started to leave with my order he had to yell for the waiter to her he was ready to either get his order placed or walk out. Their food is good but customer service sucks! If they are that over loaded they need to hire more people. I won't be back. The foods not that good to deal with that IMO. We had to wait to get our order taken for over 15 minutes. Our waitress Jen was talking to a table that were related to her right in front of ours. She turned her back to us and we had to flag down another waitress to get any service. That waitress turned around and called our waitress. Jen was not even phased when we voiced our displeasure. Weary from the road & craving something good we decided to take Exit 142 for some good ole Sonny's BBQ. For starters this was the nicest Sonny's BBQ I've ever been to. They had a full bar with tv's in case you wanted to have a cold one (or two ) while watching a game. We were greeted by a super friendly hostess who was also our server. Unfortunately I didn't catch her name but she was a very nice blonde lady. She made sure we were happy the entire meal. We ordered our usual go to. The Sonny's Sampler. She saw that my husband & I were going to have to split the garlic bread so she brought us another piece so we could have our own. I'm a garlic bread fiend so that really made me happy. Everything was delicious. The only critique I have is that the chicken was just a little bit tough. Probably just needed a tad bit more time to cook & tenderize some more. Lunch on a Wednesday. The sweet bartender managed to wait on us inside and tend her outside bar. I was almost impressed that she didn't write down our order, but my smothered chicken arrived on a bun rather than the wrap that I ordered. Walked in and sat at the bar. Girl behind bar took 5 minutes to even acknowledge me. Then asked "what do you want." I asked if she had any IPAs. "Huh?". Do you have any IPAs I ask again. "I don't know what that is," she says in an exasperated tone. Ask what she has to offer and she runs through about 4 beers. I opt for the Stella. She grabs one out, does not open it for me, sets it down and walks away. Keep in mind that one needs a bottle opener for the beer i asked for - guy from the kitchen came out and opened it for me. I had heard bad things about this place and after this experience I can't disagree with them. This was my 2nd time at the bar. 1st experience was almost as bad. There will not be a 3rd chance. How does a chain (albeit a local one) offer some of the best BBQ going? My friend and I had prompt, friendly service throughout the night. I went for the AYCE ribs, and let me tell you, that is one hell of a deal. You can eat your way through a full rack or more for the price most places ask for half a rack. The ribs are exceptionally meaty and flavorful, and you have plenty of sauces to choose from to get your mess on. I remember the sides well - fresh green beans chock full of meat were the best veggie I've ever had as a BBQ side. I think I had three orders of that and drank the juice it sits in each time. The cole slaw was good, and the baked beans were great. I bet you can't go wrong with any of them. I'd stop at any Sonny's location! read more

Only an idiot from up north would think that this is "real Southern" BBQ. Their food is good, edible, and clean but, southerners know that you best find a mom&pop roadside BBQ diner and get ya a real plate of goods before you head back across the mason dixon line. These BBQ chain's are a joke and insult to born and bred southerners that know what real smoked BBQ is. Tip: If your from up north and must eat this BBQ, get a samwich to go then head through the Po Folks drive thru for your greens, grits, and a gallon of regular sweet tea. I can only comment on the food quality, price, and timing as we used the drive thru. Considering it was not a fast food joint, our time spent in the line was reasonable (10-15 minutes). The parking lot was packed and folks were standing outside waiting to be seated. The cost was reasonable. We ordered for a family of 3 under $25. The sandwiches were amazing! Even my husband liked it and he doesn't eat BBQ! The meat was moist and smokey, served on a perfectly toasted garlic bread. I became very disenchanted with Sonny's after eating at the horrible ones in the Panama City area in recent years; but I have been eating at this one in Marianna since it opened in the 1990's and it has always been one of the better ones. You will almost always have to wait to get seated, even if ten tables are available; seems to be a thing at this restaurant with no dedicated seating host. The food quality is very good and the wait staff is efficient and seem to like working here--unlike Lynn Haven and the former Panama City Beach restaurants. Well managed, Sonny's are very inconsistent from location to location and needs to work on that, especially since they are a Florida restaurant chain. This location also seems to be actually smoking their barbecue unlike Lynn Haven, which uses a lot of liquid smoke! read more

I typically love this Sonny's branch. Every year we order for Mother's Day and my sister picks it up. This year I called and ordered 4 family feasts to be picked up at 1:00 today. My sister shows up to get the food and they claim they do not have the order. They claim no order was called in. It's in my recent calls on my phone so I know I called it in. Now lunch is an hour and half late and my sister, who came from out of town, is very upset because an hour and a half less time she could be spending with our mom. read more

This is the second time in the past month we have picked up curbside orders. Last time our order was wrong. This time the pickup time was delayed. All of the food was cold and the pulled pork was overcooked and not edible. Seems like the quality of food has decreased and if it's takeout, customers are not given the best products or service.
