I love the concept of this, but the customer service is subpar for someplace you pay out of pocket. The receptionist seems put out and completely uninterested. The scan part was good and I appreciate getting resukts although it would be nice to have someone explain them a bit better as it is hard to read medical terms. Horrible experience! They claim they have high level technology and expert radiologist, but unfortunately it's not true. Don't be fooled by their lies. They don't give you correct diagnosis and even charge you more. Very unprofessional staff, my daughter faced more painful experience during the scan and even the results were not accepted by the doctor in UCLA we had to get the scan done again! They charged us $400 just for the scan which cost only $250 max else where with accurate readings and results. read more

I went to Dr. Kelly's after my GP found what they felt was a lump in my breast, and with cancer history in my family I wanted to get it checked out as soon as possible. Because of my age and tissue density, I couldn't get a mammogram, and after some reading it was clear Dr. Kelly's sonocine was a great option for me. Luckily they were able to get me an appointment (it truly was luck, since there was a recent cancellation -- otherwise the next opening wasn't for some time) so it was really good fortune I could get an ultrasound right away. The procedure was fast, easy, and painless. Everyone in the office was nice, professional and conscientious. After the procedure they said I would be contacted within 48 hours if Dr. Kelly saw anything of concern, and records of the results mailed to me. Luckily I ended up being okay and results ended up in my mailbox about a week after my appointment. I was able to use my HSA card to pay for the procedure as well, so even though it was out of pocket, I wasn't totally on my own! I'll definitely be including a sonocine ultrasound in my yearly checkup from now on. read more

I had a great experience here today. The young lady at the front desk was very warm and friendly as was the ultrasound technician. I was surprised to get my result on the same day. I appreciate how clean and relaxing they make the ultrasound room: warm, dim lighting, warm gel, and a wet-nap warmer for after the procedure. My mother and I came to get our breast ultrasound done and it was such a quick easy process. Isabel the tech was professional and very informative of the whole process. I got my results the very next day, my results were thankfully normal and I'm sharing my mothers story because maybe it may come useful to someone out there. After her scan the doctor found out her lymph nodes in her axilla were very swollen we were able to get her to see her primary doctor right away to see what the root of the issue was. If it wasn't for her Sonocine scan she wouldn't have known she had this issue. It's painless and quick I recommend and I know I'll be getting my scan yearly from now on. read more

IMPORTANT INFORMATION! Dr. kevin Kelly is the best, however, his business has sold and we experienced something so very different with this new company. We were only moments delayed and called to report we were running a few minutes behind. Upon arrival we were told if we were 1 minute late, we would be charged $450 and not be seen. This is an interesting approach to quality patient care.....This made the ultrasound feel very cold and anxious. The reason I brought my daughter in was due to a very large lump in the upper breast area. When the report came back it showed there were no findings. THIS IS A LARGE LUMP! Not sure how this could ever be missed via ultrasound. We followed up with a breast surgeon who has sent us elsewhere for further testing and advised she won't back this ultrasound center due to results like this. This is a large amount of money to spend seeking help when there is an obvious problem, only to be told it's not there! The mass is visible without palpitation. read more

This facility, now under new ownership and re-branded as Sono Center, isn't what it was under the now-retired Dr Kevin Kelly (who founded the Breast Ultrasound Centre and invented the Sonocine machine). The lack of an onsite radiologist or doctor means your scans are read remotely after you've left, with no opportunity to ask questions or get any clarity if there's an ambiguous result (Sono Center advises you to follow up on your emailed results with your own doctor). AWBUS (and ultrasound generally) is great screening technology, especially for dense breasts. But I prefer to have a real-time ultrasound session with a doctor - faster answers and less uncertainty (for the same price). Dr Kelly was a true champion of women's health, championing early detection and also making the screening process as stress-free as possible. The new Sono Center ownership is less specifically focused on women's breast health (there's a menu of other ultrasounds you can have there now); plus, the lack of onsite radiologist means it's more like a mass screening facility instead of the more personalized approach offered by Dr Kelly. Ultrasound, including AWBUS/Sonocine, remains an important component of breast screening, so this shouldn't deter women from getting ultrasound scans (whether in the form of AWBUS/Sonocine or a handheld ultrasound). But bear in mind your Sono Center scan will be performed by a tech who can't answer your questions or comment on what they're seeing - and it'll be read remotely by a radiologist you never get to speak to. Dr Kelly will be missed, but I'm grateful for his work in promoting Automated Whole Breast UltraSound for women with dense breasts (for whom mammograms are less accurate). The technology is still sound, but the patient experience is sadly less than it used to be. I hope the new ownership will consider honoring Dr Kelly's legacy by asking themselves why he had such a loyal patient base - and what made the Sonocine experience stand out from other breast screening options. read more

This office took my full payment for services and then submitted a claim to my insurance. I found out when I submitted the claim for reimbursement. That's how I found out what the holdup was. My insurance had sent a check to the Breast Ultrasound Center at the behest of the BUC. At best, this establishment does not have a working system to make sure these kinds of things don't happen. At worst, fraud. Why submit a claim for monies already received? I'll never be back. There are other ultrasound offices using the same technology. Avoid this one. read more

I hope to make an appointment with 100%, but the front desk tells me that I can only make an appointment in the middle of January 2021. I am very sad. I worry about my health. I cannot believe insurance covers mammograms and does not cover breast ultrasound. It is so much faster, easier, safer, more effective and certainly much more pleasant than a mammogram. BEWARE! I hate writing a negative review, but I think others should know this insurance information before booking an appointment with Dr. Kelly. Dr. Kelly doesn't bill insurance, which is not a problem, but he won't give out his tax ID # that my insurance requires when processing a medical claim. I also had to pay in full BEFORE my appointment, which I have never had any other doctor do (maybe this is the new norm?). I don't understand why I wasn't told they wouldn't give out their tax ID # when I booked the appointment on the phone so I could find a doctor who could give me the proper information to bill insurance. This information is vital to patients who depend on their insurance to cover part of the expense. I asked for the tax number at the office and my insurance company called their office to get the tax number and we were both refused, with no understandable explanation. So I am stuck with the full price of the bill which is very disappointing because I pay a lot for my PPO insurance. In addition, the whole appointment was a comedy of errors that ended up in a 2.5-hour office visit. After completing my sonogram, I had to lay on the cold table for a half an hour only to find out the computer didn't record my tests and had to do it all over again. Then I went into Dr. Kelly's office only for him to leave me sitting there for 25 minutes. When he came back in he did take the time to explain my test results in detail, which I really appreciated. He was kind and informative. I don't have a problem with his bedside manner or the staff, but with the lack of organization and lack of ability to help patients with their insurance. read more

Dr. Kelly explained the results and showed me what healthy breast tissue looks like vs. what cancer looks like on a sonogram. His office staff was knowledgeable and friendly. I highly recommend this procedure for women with dense breast tissue. Dr. Kelly is brilliant. No, they don't take insurance, but you can bill back to your own with a diagnosis of "dense breasts" from your GYN or GP. My history is of years of "Clean" mammograms and an occasional ultra sound. In March of 2011, after both, I was asked to come back in 6 months for a recheck. At almost 80, nothing was triggered. In September the mammogram focused on the left breast with many in and out of the room by the technician. Next came the ultrasound where the words, "you disagree," passed between one radiologist and the technician. The "chief" radiologist came in herself taking the wand and discussion continued, they telling me it was probably nothing, but they wanted a "fine single needle aspiration, doctor speak"to be sure. That was the following Wednesday. On Monday I drove to Venice Beach to Dr. Kevin Kelly and brought along my scans for his use. The procedure was simple, comfortable and thorough. To explain, normal hand held ultrasound will click on single images selected by the operator, this is what is used for classification. SoneCine is a Streaming Video, a continuous action within the entire chest area upper right armpit to right waist and continuing in this pattern straight, up and down ending at the left waist. Nothing is overlooked. As I was dressing, Dr. Kelly is reviewing the video. He initially told me that the two "suspicious areas, (I had been told one!) were indeed nothing, just fatty tissue, and I was free to leave. I was in the parking lot outside the office calling my family with the good news, when Dr. Kelly called and asked me to come back in. After telling me there was no cancer where it was suspicious, he continued to review my video and in another area, he found Invasive Ductal Cancer, which clearly mammograms for a few years prior had failed to see. This because, withheld from me for years intentionally (physician protocol) I had Dense Breast Tissue, which has a 47% failure rate in seeing cancer. White on While, like seeing a Snowball on a Mountain of Snow. When I returned to my home and contacted my primary for Breast Surgeon referrals, I was referred back to Imaging who chose to ignore Dr. Kelly's pinpointing my cancer location and subjected me to a double core deep biopsy, which was done twice and was incredibly painful. As this was proceeding, the very harried "Chief Radiologist" was asking in what position was my breast, where was my shoulder, etc. She/they just subjected me to extreme pain by focusing on the two areas Dr. Kelly identified as clean, yes they surely were. They could not find my cancer. I was sent for an MRI during which they could not find my vein for an IV. I saw Dr. Kelly September 19, on September 30, 11 days later UCSD called me via phone saying, "You have cancer!" Duh, This UCSD Moores Cancer Center has a Chief Radiologist who refuses to accept SoneCine or AWBUS, Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound, for which there is a CPT code for reimbursement. Because I have not yet been able to get an "Out of Network" referral to Dr. Kelly, I have not yet gotten Insurance Reimbursement. There is a very fine line in Insurance Coding. Dr. Kelly is a two or three person office, $350. or $250, does not cover an Insurance person to run this gamut for you. I continue to see Dr. Kelly annually yes, out of pocket with great difficulty, but now approaching 86, thanks to Dr. Kelly, I did not move onto Late Stage Breast Cancer, I am alive, well, and advocating. There is no question at all that my annual mammograms would have continued to read clear until it was too late. I was booking a hotel for my annual exam with Dr. Kevin Kelly and came across these two ridiculous reviews concerning insurance. Initial visit costs $350, subsequent visits are $250. The miscommunication regarding insurance is unfortunate, but SONOCINE is a LIFE-SAVING procedure. I was assured by Dr. Kelly that breast cancer is not terminal, if detected in a timely manner. You heard me correctly. My mom would be here to enjoy her grandchildren if she knew of Dr. Kelly, who was practicing before her initial breast cancer diagnosis. I had the same experience as Cathy A. from Los Angeles about getting the TIN number, which is standard for processing insurance claims. I signed a statement during my office visit in June, 2016 that said "Kevin Kelly, M.D. will provide you with a comprehensive billing statement...that can be submitted to your insurance company." I submitted his receipt to CIGNA shortly after my visit, and it was denied for lack of a TIN. I called Dr. Kelly's office and the receptionist stated that he doesn't provide this because of concerns that the insurance company would reimburse him directly rather than the patient. That is a bogus excuse. The office misrepresents that they will give you something that is acceptable to insurance companies but This is NOT TRUE. Being a medical provider and professional, I'm sure he knows that a TIN or SSN is required for processing insurance claims. I have scheduled a Sono Cine' almost every year for the past several years because this procedure outperforms mammograms and standard ultrasounds in detecting breast cancer in my humble opinion. I have had mammograms and standard ultrasounds over the years as well. I highly recommend Dr. Kevin Kelly, M.D. and the Sono Cine' for anyone who wishes to be well-informed of their personal breast health and to have peace of mind whether or not cancer is detected. Dr. Kelly has an excellent bedside manner and is very kind and thoughtful in how he explains the results of the Sono Cine' to each patient. He spends whatever time is required to explain the interpretation of the images as well as answer any questions the patient may have. He has 30+ years of experience and is very knowledgeable about offering an accurate and well-informed approach to each person's personal health issue. Mammograms and regular ultrasounds have limitations and are dependent upon the skill of the technician to "catch" a suspicious lump or irregularity. The Sono Cine' covers every square inch of the targeted area and takes multiple images of each square inch. Nothing is missed. Visiting Dr. Kelly's office is among the best experiences I have ever had in dealing with screening and diagnostic procedures for breast cancer (and made the situation not so scary!!) Dr. Kelly was highly recommended by another radiologist who worked at a well-known cancer center in Los Angeles. The doctor's words in Los Angeles to me were, 'You need to see Dr. Kevin Kelly, he is "the" breast cancer specialist and is the top expert in the field.' So, off I went to Dr. Kelly's office with my images (films back then, now many images are on CD). Although Dr. Kelly is local (Pasadena and Venice), I would travel any distance to see Dr. Kelly and have his office perfom the Sono' Cine' and explain the results. As far as available and known technology to date, this is the best combination I have found -- Dr. Kelly and the technology he pioneered, the Sono Cine' (which now has FDA approval!). Thank you, Dr. Kelly and team for all of your help over the years. I have referred friends to you often. Dr Kelly is the best kind of doctor. One who cares enough to find a better way to find possible breast cancer. Move over regular mammograms - if you have dense breast tissue, getting a sonocine is a must (and it is affordable!!) After the procedure, Dr Kelly will sit with you himself and go through the test with you. I recently had an abnormal mammogram through my regular insurance company but because I had just had a sonocine, I was not afraid. Dr Kelly got involved and even did a second sonocine. All was good! Wow what an amazing experience I lost my sister to Breast Cancer two years ago at the age of 44 so I want to be very diligent with having all the best testing available to me I went to Dr Kelly as a referral by a friend whom had breast cancer and she is a survivor she found Dr Kelly and referred him to me because I mention I wanted something different then doing a mammogram I have breast implants and dense breast two things that are a negative for getting the best reading through a mammogram I have research and discovered that Dr Kelly's technique is the best for my situation and I am so very thankful for him today I had my first ultra sound and thankfully all was well and I received a clean ultra sound I will be returning every year and I am no longer going to be doing mammograms. read more

Going to Dr. Kelly was one of the best decisions of my life. I feel a profound sense of relief knowing that I have had the best great examination available. I have a serious history of breast cancer in my family and was never told that regular mammograms miss 30% of tumors in dense great tissue. Luckily my current gynecologist recommend me to Dr. Kelly. I stopped getting mammograms very early on...about ten years ago. My doctor, Dr Prudence Hall recommended the Sonocine exam and I chose to do that. As a young woman I had dense breasts and had a concern from a mammogram which was cleared up by an ultrasound. So when Dr Hall recommended Sonocine, I jumped at the chance. Why go through the pain and less reliable process of a mammogram when it was most likely I would have to get an ultrasound to verify the results? By changing to the Sonocine I was confident in the results, and a very important difference...the Sonocine examines the ducts under the arm as well. And as for Dr Kelly's staff...they are all pleasant and efficient! I am so grateful that there is an effective alternative to mammograms! Insurance companies...get with it!
