These people are SPECTACULAR. Taylor, who I am dubbing Yaylor, is a total Rockstar. I had an injured possum stuck in my fence. She came out and was so sweet with this poor creature. Talked to it in a calm and reassuring tone and gently put it in the carry case. Instead of looking like it was going to rip her face off, it stayed calm and compliant. Nice work!!!​ read more

We started with some info about the rescue and how to handle raccoons in your yard etc., then did a walk to see the turkey vulture, the hawk, coyote, bobcat, mountain lion, possum and wended w the wolf dog, domestic cat and sheep and goats. We are so lucky to have Doris Duncan's rescue org. in our county. I have found all kinds of 'abandoned' baby animals on my property and taken them to SoCoWRF. A number of them have been 'rehabilitated' and returned here. I also had them install 2 barn owl boxes on my property. I try to bring produce over regularly (they have a signup list of what they need on their website). If you can manage, please send them a little (big is ok too) donation. Our local wildlife center truly extends their ability to help out local wildlife. It's truly heart warming to know that our little orphan and injured animals are getting the care and healing they deserve. Sonoma Wildlife rescue has animals that will be released after rehabilitation in addition to their long term residents that will live their lives out there. The staff and volunteers are very dedicated together rehabilitation if the animals. This sanctuary does tours to the public on Saturdays from 12-2pm Last week we came out for a workshop about building puzzle treat boxes for enrichment. We were able to watch Wiley Coyote figure out how to tug on the rope to open the box to get his frozen rat reward. Sonoma County Wildlife Animal Rescue Educational Tour was excellent! Kelsey who greeted us at the front desk was very friendly and helpful. Our tour guide Natalie was very knowledgeable, kind and did a great job managing our group. SCWAR has several animal ambassadors (Coyotes, foxes, wolf dogs, mountain Lions, skunk, hawks etc...) that can not be released into the wild. It was very educational to see these animals up close and learn about how they arrived at the rescue facility. I was impressed with the number of animals Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue helps every year. It was a great feeling seeing the animal ambassadors in a more natural environment too. I highly recommend Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue Tour (wear hiking boots and comfortable clothing) and call them directly to reserve your spot. We will definitely return here again and appreciate how kid friendly they are. read more

We found an bat on the garage floor and they explained that we could pick it up as long as we were careful not to touch it. We took it in, and the person who took it in promptly diagnosed it as torpid because of the cold, and said that if it knocked from its roost, it just needed to be warmed up. She took it off to warm it up and she released it later. All seemed well. Yesterday I called about a very sick skunk The person I talked to would not discuss the possibility of rabies, and said that we should put it in a box and bring it in. I told her we could not do this as we have not protective gear or training let alone the vaccinations that people who work with sick wild animals have, and she just repeated this. Seemed like very irresponsible advice. All we could do was shoo the vultures off so that the critter could die in piece. read more

I brought in an injured animal to this wildlife rescue... I don't know much about rescuing animals and I caught a baby fox that was obviously injured and was paralyzed on his back legs. We fed him to try to trap him because we knew he needed help. We brought him to the rescue and Dorris came up to me and scolded me for feeding wildlife and told me it's illegal and made me feel awful for attempting to help this injured fox. I was trying to help this poor baby and I was scolded and honestly Dorris tried to embarrass me and told me should would call fish and game on me for catching this fox by feeding him. I will NEVER support this wildlife rescue again and I will never bring an injured animal here ever. If Dorris wanted to educate me about the "correct" way to help injured animals I would respect that and follow those laws but she was so rude and disrespectful. I just called them to get help with a skunk trapped in my property. I listened to all the prompts and proceeded to call the additional number. When I called, the woman was extremely rude and she then yelled at me. I was tried to explain the reason for my call and she yelled at me, "Stop talking! You should not have called this number. Stop talking to me!" All I had said was my name and I have a skunk on my property.... That's it. I hoping they think twice about employees who are verbally abusive to callers. read more

I took my extended family on a tour here the day after Thanksgiving and Kelsey gave us a wonderful tour! The whole family enjoyed it and we ranged in age from 3 to 77. I highly recommend this as a family outing, even though the 3 year old was a little too young. read more

Another flakey sonoma county volunteer disorganization. Their heart is in the right place, but their head definitely isn't. Went to a disorientation on how to rescue animals, which they charged $15 for 'material fees'. What materials? They said it was for copying, & they handed out a few sheets of paper at the slide show. Big deal. It wasn't even a donation, but mandatory, 'to cover costs'. What costs? To make the slide show? They even had a job for a human volunteer to teach a beaver to swim at a later date. How about that? How did these people ever get licensed to do this, or anything else, for that matter? read more

I called Sonoma County Wildlife about a baby turkey that my friend found in the middle of the night. I literally stayed up with this baby and kept it warm and fed food and water. It was doing extremely well and I new I could take care of the baby since I rescue animals as well. However, i felt they would have better equipment to help. The girl on the phone told me they wouldn't take it since they are not a native species. As she said that I had 50 wild turkeys walking on my property. I explained that it was doing well and that I gave it food and water and it ate and drank fine. She told me it was illegal to give it food or water so I said "you want it to die then" and I hung up. So I called a different number thinking it was another rescue and the girl said bring it in we will take it. Come to find out it was the same rescue. When I got 2 the door 2 extremely rude girls took the turkey from me before I could ask questions. I asked which one of them told me to let it die. One girl said it was her so I lost my cool and demanded the turkey back. After throwing a fit they got the head girl on the phone and she said they were taking it to a rescue in Napa. So stupidly I left. I called the place in napa the next day and she knew nothing about the turkey. When I called SCWR the girl said it died 1hr after I dropped it off due to dehydration which is bullshit because it was drinking fine all night on its own. This place murders animals. They take animals in, get funded by the government, and streal donations. STAY AWAY FROM THESE ANIMAL KILLERS. read more

Late morning in the afternoon, just about closing time, an injured baby skunk waddled by our back door and hunkered down in a corner of the backyard. We called these amazing people who responded immediately. Special thanks to Hal, from Sonoma, who braved the skunk with grace and good humor. Catching a skunk is not a popular rescue job. I really enjoyed touring this place. The volunteers really care about these animals and are doing a great service! There were foxes, raccoons, bobcats, goats, and wolves and each species had their own spacious cages in a natural setting. Being an animal lover it really made me feel good to know that permanently injured wild animals can live out their lives in a comfortable environment and those that can be rehabilitated can be returned to their nature when they are ready. Tony helped us get rid of a raccoon family in mom's attic. Not an easy task but Tony stayed with it and came back multiple times to make sure the raccoons were gone. Great guy to work with and a very reasonable price. Thank you Tony and mom's neighbors also thank you. read more

I called Widlife Rescue early evening and did get a call back informing me that there was a "directive" memo from a place called Native Song BIrd, directing this facility to stop accepting small birds. I phoned Native Song BIrd and that facility is closed on Wednesday's and no one returned my call. So in sum, birds are not a priority and these facilities just don't care about birds, they are expendable and in this case, the bird in question is a protected Swallow. I feel pretty helpless and do not know what to do, where to start and who to call that gives a damn about this life I am responsible for helping. Not one of the rescue centers took the call and the one that did was of no help and that is a telling failure of mission by all of these centers. read more

I have to say, I looked through the comments that others left here and am very surprised. My husband and I had an adult skunk who clearly was not acting normally nestled up near our porch so I looked up the number for Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue and was speaking with someone within a few minutes. They had a rescue person out within the next half hour and she was kind and patient with me (and three small children) and in control of the situation. She was able to quickly pick up the animal and get it into their care. I was impressed! Non profit organizations like this one are an inspiration, and my husband and I will definitely be donating. I don't understand why people are acting as if they are customers of this organization, we all are part of a community and should be working together to solve issues. It is not their job to spend resources calling people back several times. I imagine it takes a lot of money, time and love for the cause to make an organization like this work, and I'm personally thankful that they are willing to do it! read more

This is amazing place does so many wonderful things. I've taken a tour there and my husband volunteers there weekly. The staff is super friendly and everyone works so hard. The volunteers give endless hours of dedication. If you ever have the opportunity to take a tour there, don't pass it up. I first spoke to the head of this organization when I called the emergency number on Thursday night. I was trying to get advice on a baby raccoon I found in my yard. I found her dismissive and she only offered me one option which was to leave the baby outside in a box and the mother would come and get it. In reality the baby needed fluids and warmth immediately. The baby the next morning was in dire distress. I called again and spoke to the head of wildlife rescue. She was rude and condescending and offered conflicting advice. I did by best to warm the baby up and feed it fluids and it started to improve. At that point I felt the rescue would have the means to fully restore it back to health. The baby died today at 8am of dehydration. I don't trust the women that received this baby had done all she could to save this baby raccoon I found ,she also was cold and abnoxious while taking away this baby. I had to call three times today to get any response as to the condition of the raccoon. I strongly think this county rescue needs to be audited and it's mission statement defined. I feel the people at the top to be cold and callus and not in a good position of taking care of innocent animals. I know there are good and kind caring volunteers and I applaud their devotion. Please help our creatures and ask for a audit on this facility. read more

Folks: this organization depends on donations and volunteers to help our wildlife. Called for assistance with something living under our house and keeping us up all night. Doris and Linnaea came out and accessed the situation which turned out to be a rat. What really impressed me was they were going to be bit late and they called to let me know. Very professional and businesslike. They also educated us on the rat and took pictures under the house to show us exactly how they came to this conclusion. In addition, they gave us a few options on how to handle the situation which included different price points: some of them including their assistance and some of them not. I had great hopes for this organization. Who doesn't like a business that helps wildlife?! I have to say that my experience talking to one of them was dreadful. I initially called for advice on what to do for a baby possum in my neighbor's yard. She was away on vacation and I was taking care of her 3 cats (predators). The first young woman I spoke to was sweet, caring and kind and told me that if I could get it into a box and bring it to the center, they could care for it. I was unable to do it but got a call yesterday evening from a man checking up on it. He was very nice and gave me a lot of information about possums. He said if I saw it, to call the emergency number and they would take care of it. I called again this morning to say I saw it and spoke to one of the rudest, most insulting woman I've dealt with in a long time. She was, as some of the previous reviewers said very condescending. She said she was the trainer and had been given wrong information. (I only hope she doesn't train the new employees to behave like her!) At one point she asked what I had against possums! I told her I was trying to help it and she stridently told me it was against the law to trap and relocate a wild animal (not once but about 3 times). I told her I had been given different information and that she needs to coordinate what was being told to people. Horrible interaction and it has soured me on the organization. I would look elsewhere if you have any concerns for a wild animal in distress. Also, will sadly give my donations to other wildlife organizations. They need to get their act together and get rid of this employee. read more
