Cool little brewery attached to a winery. The bar area is small and has games available to play. The outside has a nice seating area. The guy working was goofy and fun. Great service. Didn't eat any food, but tried a few beers. Soo Grand Cru was tastey. It's a wheat beer made with honey. You can taste the sweetness of honey so if you don't care for sweet beers, I'd pass on this. Also had Brad Fairman's Blatant Disregard. It's an IPA with a bold flavor. If you're an IPA lover, you'll enjoy it. read more

Stopped in for a couple pints. The Red Ale was very good, I found it complex with some faint licorice notes and toffee. The pale ale was almost a farmhouse saison style, somewhat earthy. I wasn't fond of the Grand Cru or the actual Farmhouse/Saison. Usually I love those. The beertender was friendly and helpful. They have a wine section next door. There are rooftop tables and also street side tables for the nice days. I would recommend, and return if back in the area. Just sorry they aren't on the Tag-A-Brew trail. read more

My husband and I went to the Soo Brewery Friday, 24Oct for the downtown festival and parade and it was so absolutely disappointing. Our first round of beers were the apple cider (not terrible, vinegar-y and super sweet, but not horrible) and the pale ale (didn't try it, so no thoughts). My husband then ordered the Big O and that's where things got weird, nasty, and disgusting.. The server pulled a plastic pitcher from under the tap and proceeded to fill his glass- there were no bubbles, no beer head, nothing. Just a sad plastic pitcher and an even sadder pint glass filled with flat, nasty beer. Another gentleman had ordered the same beer and was able to get his poured directly from the tap.. Strange. But it got stranger. The SAME SERVER then proceeded to use the PLASTIC PITCHER as a pour off pitcher for the man's beer that she was pouring directly from the tap. We paid for our beers, left them on the patio, and left. The beers tasted terrible, like nasty vinegar taps, and were incredibly flat but what do you expect from a beer being poured from a pitcher in a cabinet. We will NOT be back. Disgusting. read more

The bartender took forever to acknowledge us even though it wasn't that busy and our food, they said would come out to us, sat at a little table off to the side for at least 8 minutes. The staff in general seemed to hardly wait on anybody visiting (there were only the bartender and one other who kept disappearing). If we come here again this is definitely a pass. This place looked really interesting as we kept passing by, so we made sure to stop in before leaving the area. I got a flight and it was a good price. The server was also really friendly and gave me a sticker. The outdoor seating was limited, but we were able to grab a table. Everything was going well, but I didn't care much for the beers that were available at the time. Maybe I'd have a higher rating with a different mix of drinks, but I wasn't amazed by anything this time around. I'll stop in once more and give them another chance, but the beer was average to me. Soo Brewing doesn't put a lot of effort into cultivating its atmosphere, which possibly is what makes it pleasant. It's a bit roughshod yet homey: walls lined with brewing memorabilia, picnic tables and old couches for seating, games to help pass the time (or divert the kids while parents enjoy a beer in peace), most importantly, friendly people behind the counter. Order from them, then take your pints back to your seat. Five beers were on offer when we went. Tasting portions are sold individually, but if you buy four they throw in the fifth free, so we got to sample the full array (and the peanuts-in-the-shell at each table were welcome for clearing our palates between sips) . A session IPA and a stout were both excellent, and I wasn't as keen on a brown ale at first, but it grew on me. The light lager was, well, everything a macro-brew lover would hope for. Our favorite in the flight was a strong ale called "Crystal Blue Persuasion" that hid the alcohol well behind a mild fruitiness. We would have gotten a glass if the keg hadn't run out just before we went to order it! Settled for the IPA--on a cooler night the stout would have been the call. Aside from the occasional clattering of 2x4 Jenga blocks some kids were playing with, the place was pretty quiet. Crowd looked like a pretty even mix of tourists and locals. This was by far my favorite place when we visited the Soo. It was a great night for the flights. I didn't know what the beer was all about so I asked the owner to give me his favorite as one flight and the darks as the other. Not a single disappointment in the 2, although there was a duplicate. Returned here after 8 years and everything has changed and not for the better. The entire look and feel of the place has changed. The wind and beer selections have been greatly reduced and they don't do flights. You can get a "taste" of beer for free or a "sample" of wine for $2. We had a beef and left disappointed. read more

They make a really good porter called "Cup of the Day". It has great savory flavors of roasted coffee and grounds. This is definitely growler worthy. He had a showcase of growlers and beer cans all the way around the brewery which was quite amazing to see, the beers they make are very delicious and the service is quite well. My kids will vouch, the Soo Brewery now sets the rootbeer standard! We spent a rainy night, playing board games and enjoying some brew. We always try a brewery when we are on vacation. This one fell short. There was only the bartender, we had to walk up to the bar for any orders (which was fine since they were not busy). The beer was ok, I had the cherry salad which was fine but my husband and kids all had burgers. They all had a fishy flavor to them, either they were cooked on a grill right after fish or stored with it but they were NOT good at all. We did mention it to the bartender but she didn't seemed too concerned. If I lived near by I would not return. read more

The Climax pizza was what brought my husband and me here (read below about that). They only had 4 taps and 1 was a hard cider (props for that). One of the beers was a blueberry beer, so there were only 2 regular beer choices. Also, 2 of the 6 wines they list were sold out. VERY limited selection of both wine and beer for a brewery/winery. The beer cheese sauce was delicious, however the pretzels were the frozen kind in the grocery store. The Climax Pizza crust was delicious, the sauce lacked flavor and the toppings were average. When all is said and done. This place is not a "do over". The music selection was terrible! T-shirts for sale as you walk in we're a disheveled mess. BUT as breweries go, this one is a big disappointment! Last but not least-what brewery doesn't have WiFi? Maybe this one doesn't have it so customers can't write bad Yelp reviews while there. read more

While on a winter day trip through the Soo, we tried to go see the locks and the sights. The locks were not visible and the there isn't much else to see, so we found ourselves looking for good place to eat lunch and grab a drink. There were 4 of us that walked in with the lunch we packed and found a nice spot on the couches. We ate sandwiches and all had a different Soo brew in their cozy lounge. With all of the board games and comfy seating available, it feels like a comfy basement with a storefront view. If I lived in the area, I would be a regular. However, as a day tripping tourist, I was happy to have a great hand crafted beer in my hand and able to eat my own lunch with friends on a couch. read more

This was a very cool brewery! We walked in and Into The Mystic was playing, so they already ranked high for me! Their seating is either church pew style, or comfy couches and love seats. They have tons of board games you can play. They only had pretzel rods when I was there, but I believe you can order food and bring it inside the brewery. While I was on vacation in the "U.P" of Michigan, my friends and I ended up staying in "The Soo" for the night as one of my buddies has family there and we had a place to crash for free (WIN). I was happily surprised to find out that "the Soo" has a brewery now, so I felt it was my duty to stop in to check it out as I am a beer lover and a brewer myself. When we arrived we weren't really sure what to think of the building as it looked like it was kind of still being worked on, but wasn't. The middle of the room had long picnic-like tables and other tables and chairs scattered about. The ordering station, serving station, and brewery were all in the same area, which to me seemed a little odd, but not out-of-the-ordinary for a small brewery or brew pub. It was a relaxed atmosphere regardless of the fact that there was death metal and "screamo" music being played on the over head. (Yea I know, an odd combo, indeed). So, on to the main event - the beer. From what I remember they had three or four beers on tap. My friends and I opted for the Amber Ale which was a bit more on the hoppy side (I like hoppy beers so that worked for me). So we got our beers, took a seat, grabbed the game "Operation" from the game shelf that they had there, and began to drink and play. The beer was for the most part "OK", nothing really special that I found. If anything, I didn't think it had enough "body" for an American Amber or enough malt flavor to round out the hops. As I said it was "OK". I know this place is new and it can sometimes take a new brewery with new equipment to get their processes and techniques down, so I'm not going to be too judgmental. I do think there's room for this place to improve tho... If / when I end back up in "The Soo" I'll pop back in and see how things are going and give an update for my fellow Yelpers. read more

I always make time to go to the Soo Brewing Company Coming from the craft beer capital of the world (San Diego), I have had my fair share of excellent beer. This place is a true gift from the heavens when I am visiting Michigan. The prices are almost too good to be true and the beer is very tasty. The guys working there are always nice and helpful. The atmosphere is very friendly and open with bench seating. I don't mind that they don't serve food since you can just grab something next door and bring it on in. For some unexplained reason, instinct mostly, while in Petoskey I got the urge to drive as far north in Michigan as possible. Which of course took me to Sault St. Marie, and Soo Brewing. At the time I'd been living in Michigan for a little less than a year, and many Michiganders urged me to see the UP. Evidently, it's like another state, where folks talk differently, and winter last a little longer than expected, and life is just slightly unlike the mitt. All of that is true, and Soo Brewing puts it on display. The beer was very good. The setup of the brewery itself was a little odd. This did not feel like a formal establishment. In fact, everything about it was informal. I felt like I was lounging around in somebody's huge house. That's not bad, but again, a little odd. Maybe this was the UP culture I'd been told about. Different, yes, but also very Canadian. Not having my passport, I couldn't vouch for the other side of Sault St. Marie. But the MI side felt plenty Canadian. I give Soo Brewing props for making a person feel like they are chilling in a local hangout. However, it might not have been intentional. Soo Brewing really is a locals haunt. Makes sense being they are the only brewery in town. When in doubt, go with a brewery. In this part of Michigan, Soo Brewing is the spot. read more

Beer was fine but the owner was terribly rude and abrasive. I had a token for a 1/2 beer (but the program ended a year ago) and have been looking forward the past two years to come back and use it! I had such a great time the first time around. The owner then got really angry at me and refused to take it at first. Apparently he got scammed by previous employees but as someone coming up here for work every 2 years, the anger at me was not warranted. He turned something I was looking forward to to a very sour experience. He eventually allowed me to use the token and apologized for his behavior after the fact but it does not excuse his behavior and for him humiliating me for no fault of my own. I will never return to this establishment or the other he owns and will never purchase the beer again. Someone who treats others as the way he treated me does not deserve my business. read more

I knew I would love this place when I walked in on a Monday night and it was chock full of people having a FOC party (Fraternal Order of Cheese)! At first it looked like a private party but the lone staff worker assured us that we could just drop a few dollars in the bucket and enjoy some cheese with our beer! This beer was the best in town, hands down. And gosh the sign outside was so unassuming that we almost missed it! The locals definitely don't take it for granted and can be found there pretty much every single night! For $3.50 or $4.00 you could get a pint of deliciously yummy brew. (My fave was the 13 IPA). No food served here but no worries, they don't mind if you BYOFood! That's actually kind of the best of both worlds because there's a ton of food restaurants on this strip that will let you get take-out! Anyways, they have rock 'em sock 'em robots, what more could you want, really? read more

I really enjoyed this unique (to me) place. It seems very yooper. We brought food in from The Palace across the street, after first walking in in a confused state - having thought there was a food menu. The bartender very nicely explained that we could get takeout and bring it back, even recommended a few places. Looking around, this seemed to be a fine idea, everyone else was doing it so.... Our boys had fun playing Battleship, checkers, and chess. We enjoyed a sampler, a Raspberry Wheat, Fudge Stout, and An IPA. We'll be back. read more

We visited the Soo as a family and brought our 10 mos daughter with us . We stopped at the brewery to taste a beer and needed to change a diaper . Any mother knows changing a baby in a public place can be hit or miss. I was happy to see that the brewery had a full size changing table in the ladies restroom ! As others have mentioned, they do not normally serve food here, it is just a bar. There is one exception and that is when they have a deal where you can get a pint of beer and a slice of pizza for $5. I think they just do this once a week, and the pizza gets ordered in from some pizzeria nearby. We took advantage of this pizza deal when stopping in for a few drinks at the Soo Brewing Company. The drinks that we tasted were all great, and worth stopping in to try. My only real negative with the place is the size of it combined with its layout. When we arrived the bar was full and it was difficult to get in and get our beers. It was in general difficult to communicate with the staff because of this. The seating is a combination of couches and church pews. In general I think the place would be able to accommodate more patrons with a more traditional bar and table setup. They did have a live band their during our visit, which was nice. But their presence kind of made the space issue even more awkward, as I had to squeeze between them to navigate throughout the bar. Overall, I would return next time I am up in Sautl St Marie. read more
