We chose the Famous Soo Locks Boat Tours, and purchased our two adult tickets online for $30 each. ($33 online). (May, 2023). This company has been providing tours since 1959, and they're distinguishable by their 150-seat yellow and blue boats. They offer many departures daily from mid-May to mid-October. From their (free) parking lot, our narrated "Classic Lock" tour began with a leisurely cruise along the American and Canadian sides of the St. Mary's River with the conductor pointing out some of the sites and their historical significance. It was evident that we were waiting for our turn to enter the up bound lock between Lake Huron and Lake Superior, as were some other tour boats and a gigantic freighter. The lock itself is an amazing engineering feat, allowing boats to travel between the two lakes that have a 21-foot variance in their heights. We alternated between being comfortably seated in, and walking around, the climate-controlled boat to take photos, as did many other passengers. Going through the locks, both up-bound and down-bound, was a slow but interesting process -- as we waited for the gates to close and for the water to fill or drain. The narration was very good and was of an appropriate duration -- providing useful information without being too long as to be distracting. Are there picturesque views along the river banks? No. The scenery, both in the American and the Canadian sides near the locks is mostly industrial -- though we did pass some parks and some tribal land. Am I generally "into" learning about engineering or industrial feats? Largely, no, my husband (an engineer) generally finds this more intriguing, but, that said, I did find this tour to be well-narrated and sometimes interesting even for my tastes. Did the tour company provide a worthwhile tour? A resounding YES. The tour was professionally done, and for a fair price. Our tour ended up being almost 2 hours given traffic through the locks. The captain truly seemed to enjoy his job, both navigating the boat and doing the narration. The boat itself was comfortable. Also note that no passport is needed to go into Canada as you won't disembark from the boat.

If…read moreyou are used to 3 star or better than you may be uncomfortable here but this is rural Michigan and definitely not unexpected. The biggest downside is the bathroom size. It is extremely narrow and if you are tall or a plus size person it will be uncomfortable. There is very little room between the toilet and wall or the bathtub and the wall. If you stay in the cabins there is no view but did feel like it was private. Bringing in an expert for space management and a refresh look would definitely not hurt. Here are the positives! First and foremost the staff is excellent. We encountered several employees and each and every one that helped us were all extremely kind. We have stayed at a total of 8 hotels this trip and they were by far the most friendly and welcoming staff that we came in contact with. The location is absolutely excellent for going to the Locks and going to the local shops. It was great to be able to go across the street to freshen up before a meal or in between tours. Our son had just bought an expensive mattress and went in with flashlights to look for bed bugs and none were to be found and trust me he went down to the mattresses, looked into the corners and under the mattresses as well. A couple of not unexpected moisture bugs were found later in the evening but again this is a cabin lodge type of location near the water. The room was clean and definitely as clean as several others that we stayed at. We stayed two nights but had breakfast only one day at the motel. I definitely regretted not just having breakfast there both days. The food was fresh and for the most part traditional hotel breakfast foods with a fabulous breakfast employee who could not help a person enough.

Lockview was pet friendly, and had a $30 charge for pet cleaning- totally fair. Ultimately, I ended up travelling alone, and the staff removed the pet fee and had my room ready early for check in. The staff is GREAT. It's an older but updated property, and I was able to stay in one of the connected cabins- really cool. Parking was parallel to the door, so close parking was like... 5 feet away from my driver's side door. Push button electronic locks with daily rotating codes- it felt very safe. The cabin was nice and clean, smelled clean, and the furnishings were nice. No caroet, which I prefer- vinyl plank. I enjoyed the round coffee table and the barrel chairs. Made it nice to get some work done not having to sit on a bed, (which would not have been ideal at all since they are raised) at a desk, or in a wingback with no matching height table. Water was hot, TV was great, and the only hiccup was a bad TV HDMI cable which maintenance fixed with a new one in under 15 minutes. Really happy with my stay here, would definitely stay again!

The breakfast was minimal which was a nice change to the typical hotel buffet you get everywhere else. I was perfectly content with cereal and fruit opposed to mounds of eggs and pancakes. The room itself was not very accessible which I brought to the attention to the host at checkout. For someone in a wheelchair; The blind draw strings were out of reach without moving furniture, there was no way to grasp the shower head, and the little mirror was too out of reach. Everything else was fine. Located in an area where you can walk around and look at shops or get a bite to eat. Next to a couple parks too which were walking distance. Parking lot is tight so be cautious.

We booked that room specifically for our four year old nonverbal son who has significant sensory needs- the hotel does not have a pool so this was a compromise. Quite frustrating to drive 6 hours (with an autistic child) to be told your room was given away to someone else. The building was really near. Staff seemed nice enough- it's just poorly managed apparently.

The kitchenette was very clean but we didn't use anything other than the refrigerator. Biggest problem was the very small bathroom. Extremely cramped. Shower was very small and almost chlostrophobic. The sink was nearly unusable as it was placed in a very narrow spot and the bowl, although very modern, had a funny angle that made it difficult to get your hands or a washcloth into. The motel is in a good location for sightseeing. Sault Ste. Marie to the east and multiple lighthouses and waterfalls to the west. Overall this was a good stay.

Room 3 much nicer than Room 4, but there is no effect light blockage on window and so sunlight comes into Room 3 very early, while Room 4 remains dark. Shower in room 4 is tiny. We have previously have stayed in rooms 15 and 16 (2021). Room 15 is bigger than room 16. Rooms are clean but well worn; only negative was lack of available sockets (only one unused socket and it was not near bathroom). Would definitely stay here again.

There are big are signs in the room prohibiting cigarette and marijuana smoking but the sign was as far as staff goes to stopping the problem. -The room was pretty run down (tape holding up ceiling tiles, outlets that didn't work, etc.) It is what it is. It's cheap and it's clean so the downsides were kind of acceptable.
