While I'm on here writing about the good shoe repair place in town (College Shoe Repair near NYPD's), I thought I'd point out my tailor, as well. I've been going to Sophia's for the past couple of years... couldn't ask for a better place. I'm pretty picky with my alterations, as one of my aunts was a seamstress and used to take care of all my clothes when I needed it, and Sophia is a throw-back to the days of family-run shops. She's done many pairs of pants and a couple of suit jackets, a very nice overcoat, even my wife's wedding dress... all done very well and for a reasonable price. She even did this down puffy-coat with a broken zipper that I didn't want to part with, and when the down got all caught up in the zipper (she probably should've told me it was a really difficult fix) she didn't charge me for the repair. Now, the sheer fact that I'm sharing this info should say something... sharing a good tailor is like sharing the last Coke on a hot day. Enjoy! read more

Never going back. Took a bridesmaids dress to be hemmed (had MAYBE 1 inch taken off), and was charged $68! Absurd pricing.

I've brought pants here to get hemmed. My pants always look great. Turn around is generally a week, but I believe he can do a quicker turn around, if needed. Prices are average what I've paid at other places. read more

Anis is very, very talented and does fantastic work quickly. I am fairly new to the Ann Arbor area and was looking for someone to drastically alter my wedding gown. It is a vintage gown that I found on consignment and was 5 sizes too large for me. He took the dress down to fit me perfectly, basically constructing a whole new dress. It has a lot of intricate bead work and he was able to keep it looking as beautifully designed as it started. I called a week ago and spoke with the owners wife about getting a bridesmaids dress altered. She said they weren't open but they'd be able to help me out since the wedding is Memorial Day weekend and my dress is way too long. I asked her pricing and she said all hems start at $16 and to bring the dress in and they'd give me a cost. I agreed. I came to the store, her husband looked at the dress, starting taking his measurements and told me it would be $65?!!! I told him the conversation I had with his wife and he said that $16 is the starter for "easy casual hems" and that dresses like this start at $48, I told him that I told his wife it was a BM dress but he just shrugged it off and said "well it's not like anyone else will do this for you right now anyways!" He told me to come back in 30 mins and it would be complete. I come back and he told me he spoke to his wife and that she stated that she never told me any of the above. I said that I wouldn't make that up and where would I get the $16 from? He continued to argue about pricing (I had the $65 visibly in my hand) and I finally just cut him off and said ok, please just give me my receipt. I feel ripped off to say the least and like he took advantage of the current situation and wanted to pawn it off as a good deed in his mind. I was very appreciative of the service during the shut down and how quickly they got it back to me, I was more than willing to pay that price but I don't appreciate being called a liar.
