Alexis McAfree aka DJ Stoykavich…read more Thanks to Alexis (AKA DJ Stoykavich), the quality of the music selection at our wedding was excellent but everything else including the quality of her sound equipment and her interactions with our day-of coordinator, the guests, and the bridal party fluctuated between disappointing to downright offensive. Prior to expressing our disappointment with our DJ, we had an onslaught of aggressive responses from both our friends and family about their many negative experiences with her. Weeks after our wedding, our guests still unsolicitedly rave about what an amazing evening they had with the sole exception regarding being any interactions they had with Alexis. Finding a good DJ can be difficult and often is not given enough forethought or in depth investigation to make sure they will be a good fit. 8-9 months prior to our wedding, we began our search. We had no idea that so many DJs (the first 8 that we reached out to) would be booked out so far for our date. Alexis was not our first choice, but being the first that we talked to who had our date available, we booked her immediately. We would quickly learn to regret hiring her. The lead up to the wedding, she was unavailable to speak with us and insisted that all contact had to be via email and could not be done over the phone or in person for any part of the planning. When the day arrived, she was difficult to work with and began butting heads with our day-of coordinator immediately. We had to speak with her rather sternly about the need to work together with him as we would not be able to tend to details during our own wedding. The quality of her microphone and speakers were subpar and everything was very scratchy and difficult to hear. Our guests were informed that requests would be $25 per song (never discussed with us in advance that a fee would be required). Things rose to a head when the time came for the couple's first dance and the mother-son dance. We had just finished cake cutting and when we went over to say it was time for the dances, she curtly told us that "if you are going to make me stop the music again, I am not going to stop it for the cake cutting later." She then attempted to argue with us about whether we had done the cake cutting already. I assured her I could still taste the cake because contrary to her thoughts, the cake cutting had happened. She had even paused the music and given the microphone to us for the cake cutting - I wondered even more how little she was paying attention to everything going on. She then said she we never got her the song for mother-son dance and that she was not going to be able to play it. One of us started to go through emails to prove to her that we had submitted it (conveniently as ALL communication had occurred via e-mail) and she dug her feet in and insisted verbally that it was too late because we didn't do it on time (despite confirming music plan for the day over 2 weeks prior that had originally been sent 5-6 MONTHS prior). After some tense back and forth, I asked her to look through and see if she had the song (it is a very common wedding song) and she relented and she said she had it. The challenge was not so much about whether we had told her the song in advance but that she was immediately in our face and very defensive and outright aggressive and not did not possess even an ounce of tact or empathy for us AT OUR OWN WEDDING. We made very few specific requests of her for our day, none of which were taxing, so this level of aggression was unwarranted. As she was breaking her materials down at the end of the night she cut in to say she needed the second half of her money, which is understandable, although again not terribly tactful. She informed us how much we owed, and then said we needed to tip her on top of that. NEEDED to. We had been tipping all of our other services quite generously without prompting and planned to do so for her, but to be told we needed to tip, after such offensive behavior all night long, was bold of her. I'm disappointed to note that the examples listed above were only a few of those we experienced working with her. We would never suggest Alexis' services to anyone. We would strongly encourage avoiding her at all costs to be honest. From beginning to end it was awful and she provided literally the only disappointing aspect of our wedding. For the sake of your big day (or any event), plan ahead and get a better DJ - do NOT settle for her as we did.

He did a great job making sure we had all our special songs together and even helped us put together the music/event timeline since I was useless in that regard. We live in Hawaii and hired him all through email and phone conversations and I knew he was the best of the best; he was willing to skype with us and always asked if we wanted more of this or that, always willing to change it up. Day of- set up on time, super prepared even though we just flew in ourselves and we were a bit frazzled. Timing of all songs was perfect for the wedding ceremony. Couldn't have gone better! Us being music people had a very specific repertoire and it worked out great. Dave had up lighting, fog machine, LED party lights and even had a slideshow presentation of the bride & groom. Imagine having to manage a wedding group and time the special dance songs. It's like herding cats! Dave got it done. And Dave is so very nice & accommodating. Fair prices. He kept in constant contact when needed by phone or email. He met with us several times as needed and met us once at the venue a week before the wedding. Some of my favorite parts about BRICK were the late event time, no noise ordinance, flexible decor options, flexible vendor options, ample parking and more. The only vendor BRICK requires you to use, is their bar team, which is perfect because they were AMAZING. They were friendly, attentive, fast, and fun to have at the event. We supplied our own alcohol and they did the rest! During the planning stage of the event, BRICK was extremely responsive and helped us with every tiny detail. We worked closely with Hannah, Sabrina, and Victoria. I would absolutely choose BRICK again!

The fee for the lesson and party is $15, for party only - $10. The announcement (https://www.queenbeessd.com/swign-dance) places the lesson at 6:30-7:30PM, the dance with DJ music is supposed to start at 7:30PM. On the day of my visit, the times were shifted by half an hour, so if you want to just dance, 8PM is the good time. The dance lesson by Mercedes Moore (yes, the great San Diego singer!) is excellent, most of the 20+ dancers appeared to be regulars and thus had accumulated significant amount of skill, yet due to small size of group, a true beginner should feel OK. Unlike most places in San Diego, this one has noticeably more leads (traditionally men) than follows (women), so this venue might be great for a true beginner follower. During the social party few more dancers appeared, but the group remained pretty small, and by 9PM it became hard to find a dance partner (the music was still going on). Some logistics: the free (street) parking is very limited. The best paid parking is across the street in a well-lit parking lot ($5 for two hours). The wooden floor is of OK quality, the seating is adequate for the small crowd. As always for small gatherings, bringing one's own dance partner is recommended, although on the day I have visited, it was easy for follows to find a lead. Overall: a true beginner follow should definitely check out this venue. An intermediate lead that wants just to dance, should consider bringing his own follower.

Both David & Gena keep in close communication with us. Even during a serious health issue they did not miss a beat and kept in close communication with us. During the celebration they made sure that we took family shots so we did not miss out. The props were the best props we have seen at any photo booth experience we have had. The props were well organized and in bins which made it easy to select for the pictures. There were more enough props so we did not have wait for any prop from the group in the booth. If was an effortless process. They made sure that everyone was aware of when it was close to the end of the booth time so that anyone who did not get a chance to go to the booth had the opportunity to take pictures before they closed up shop. When they were done the gave us individual pictures of our son & daughter-in-law and the photos of the family along with a thumb drive of all the photos that were taken of the evening. We are very pleased and had many comments on how well the photo booth ran and the total experience. PBX will definitely be on our list for our next celebration! A definite plus is that there is ample (FREE) parking, and that there are parking lots that are close in proximity to avoid walking a distance. The food was OK as they served 2 different salads, bread, 2 pastas and beef. I was most impressed with the pasta dishes. The tortellini was my fave. The beef was a bit on the dry side. The facility is a bit dated, but it does serve the purpose of holding a grand event. A concern that needs to be addressed is the issue of plugs, cords and outlets. Although the cords were taped to the ground, there were some cords that were clearly sticking up from the floor in the middle of the pathway. One lola actually tripped and fell landing on her kneecaps. OUCH!!!
